This really hit home with me, while my neighborhood isn't the greatest we own our home. It's not the best one on the block, it's old and needs updating. However, when I step outside there all these better looking houses that are empty, they are for renters. No one can afford the rent here anymore, families are stacked on top of each other. The houses that are occupied have nice cars, beautiful lawns, people get out of their fancy cars all dressed nice. We are struggling with money at the moment, when I ask my husband what are we doing wrong. His answer is always "they are pretending to have money, they are in debt, we aren't" . We both grew up really poor, I forget to be grateful for what we do have.

Cheap debt for the last decade or so has made many people look a lot richer than they are.
All you need to do is go and look at the statistics around credit card debt and you realise many people who appear wealthy are not.
You are doing great plus you have a great partner by the sounds of it.

Brought a tear to my eye this one. Started with a rough upbringing on a council estate. I feel I’m never good enough, never doing well enough, always feel like I don’t have money. I’ve never had any help, I was homeless after leaving the army and eventually found work and have done well since. Working hard and I find now between me and my wife we are doing 110k+ but with a 2/ month mortgage and 1.5k / month nursery fees it’s really difficult just getting by month to month. I can’t afford car repairs while my neighbours and friends seem to be on constant holidays and have new cars on PCP which I can’t afford. Sometimes it feels like I’m failing.

My late dad coined a saying, which I often repeated to my students: "There's no point gazing into the reverse crystal-ball and predicting what might have turned out better given different circumstances." I had a tendency to do this until I realised it was utterly, utterly futile - all you do is upset yourself and achieve absolutely nothing. Oscar Wilde famously said: "To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance." It is, of course, a humorous witticism, but it contains a profound realisation: the sooner we learn to appreciate ourselves on our own terms and for the person we are, the sooner we will blossom into the very best version of ourselves - and that might well only happen later in life.

This is probably the best video I've seen on UA-cam in a long time. Incredibly thought provoking. The reason people feel so far behind is largely down to the idea or lack of idea of what happiness looks like. Everyone wants more. More money, more free time, more gratification, more security. Even millionaires drive to get more out of their lives. Without really knowing what they're looking to get. Money is a tangible item to measure success. But the reality is there's never enough of it for most people. Even if they do have enough, people are engrained to need/want more.

Another great video Damien. I learned some time ago that people will make themselves broke trying to look like they're doing well.
And it's really quite pointless trying to compare oneself to another person in a different position. It's often lopsided in that you notice people doing better than you, but not so much those not doing as well as you, unless it's acutely obvious.

I really really needed this video today. I've been watching personal finance yt channels and the emphasis on starting in your late teens/early twenties while you're in your mid 40's is like being under the weight of a huge boulder. I got sober, got clean, got off the streets/hotels, got married, treated my ptsd, therapied for my FOO trauma. I was homeless for almost ten years. I *couldn't* have done anything but bare survival in my early adulthood. I scrounged dumpsters for leftover french fries. There was zero way I was investing in a 40-flipping-1k.
I constantly feel like I'm playing catch-up and coming up short. Thank you so much for giving me some perspective on this. Helping me see the entire journey as still ongoing, not finished.
If anyone who grew up like I did is reading this, I hope you're doing ok. Take care of yourself, avoid exciting people and stick with boring people, give yourself a hug for making it this far.
