As a high school teacher, I have to say this is true. The school institution has failed. As a teacher, I am very honest with students: if you hate my classes, it's ok. Study to pass exams, because grades will be important to graduation, after that, return to whatever makes you happy. Exams do not measure intelligence. Do not worry.
Thanks. This is another thing I like to think about, is that some teachers really do want to help kids. That’s why they became a teacher! I would love to see more of teachers like this. The person who made this video explains this perfectly, and I wish I could show this to my teachers. My friends. My dad is a literal president of a high school. Maybe I’ll show him this.
I think kids and teens would learn more from UA-cam than they would in school. Rather than falling asleep in class and instantly forgetting what you learnt at the end of the day, you could learn from fun, interesting and easy to digest information from videos like these. Education doesn't have to be boring for it to be effective if you ask me
Homework sucks. They have around 7 hours to teach us. I don't want to take so much time from my own personal life to do the work that can provide excess stress.
@Foxy The pirate 2 I always questioned how and if homework was even necessary because unless I memorized the questions and answers, I never felt like I was actually learning anything. A friend of mine never did her homework in the sixth grade and still passed to seventh!

yup nowadays, even the in-between assignments are useless I've already learned it, give me the test before I forget literally everything! I'd rather have had an hour extra of school per day than homework.
@@alevm1710 Agreed. Even though I'm an adult now, it always infuriated me when teachers would give us a crap-ton of homework and projects to do over holiday breaks. What part of "break" do they not get? I remember on the very first day of sixth grade, they gave us so much homework it took me four hours to get it done. I actually ended up missing one small assignment and the teacher got an attitude about it.
My teacher is the greatest. He literally said “please don’t raise your hand, it annoys me. You can get up and go to the bathroom whenever you please, just as long as it’s in something that’s not important!” It’s so good because it’s true. You have to listen to something important of course but you have the freedom to go whenever you like without aching your hand muscles all the time.
My Music teacher always told us that the German class were much better than us even though he was a German himself and had a n English accent so terrible you litterally couldn't understand him in any other language except German.
is because the mindset of "we are all special" is a stupid fabrication of the XXI century... If everybody is special , then no one is. No , some people are born better at things and is good to teach that to people froma young age so they don't become frustrated thinking they have some inner problem

school made me suicidal. i was extremely depressed whenever i had school, and it instantly went away over winter and summer break (unless they gave me work to do over winter break) i love learning more than almost anyone i know, it's the main thing i do for fun
Yea i went to a school that was horrible one time a teacher called me to her class at the end of the day (i have to go there to keep my binder organized) but when i got there and showed her it, it was not orginized so she threw it on the floor and said "clean it up" in front of her whole class i had social anxiety and everybody was looking at me and i dont like when older people look down on me and be rude so i was about to cry infront of the whole class.
One problem with the current school system is they force you to learn something you dont really care, that is why many students simply memorize but dont really understand
I literally only want to learn about one thing in my life, my school doesn’t teach it, instead they teach useless garbage that everyone I know forgets the next day. You’re completely correct

I went to an alternative high school. It was amazing. There were only 5 rules. You called all the teachers by their first names. The k-12 students were treated as individuals and not tiny people to be controlled, punished and viewed with constant suspicion. You could choose what you wanted to study. There were no bells and no one forced you to go to class. And ya know what happened? Students wanted to learn. We would show up and have class on our own even without a teacher. And the kids who went through this untraditional school system went on to become educated, well adjusted and successful adults.
i had two friends booted to the alternative high school, and i learned much later that, WOW, THEY TREAT THE STUDENTS LIKE PEOPLE! me, ofc, broken by the normal high school...
In Australia we call have schools like that except we call it “the big picture program”. I got excepted into one. It’s one of the reasons I’m excited for 2022.
I can clearly remember that one time in Maths class in middle school where I got called to the blackboard to do an exercise and I was so incredibly anxious about not being able to do it that I almost passed out. On top of that, the teacher was scolding me and my classmates were laughing about my poor performance...no kid should have to feel the way I did just because they don't have an attitude for a subject, I still have flashbacks of that episode whenever I have to go to the blackboard even if years have passed. I was 11.
Basically: the school system plays an RPG but they take every character, ignore their stats/skills/boons/etc. And try to place them all in the same few classes/roles
Me: I wanna be a singer when I grow up. Teachers: Okay pronounce llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch then you will magically become a singer.
The sadder part is how they get blamed for all the wrong things in the school they are only following the rules of the school district which are basically the higher ups for schools and if they go against it there carriers can be over
Sad part is Teachers are told to conform to the Admin's narcisstic sociopathy or they'd get fired Seeing this comment made me realize that some teachers are infact scapegoats and are slaves to the deplorable selfish school system
I had actually learned about this in my high school and my teacher said that their education wasn't as good as ours (UK). Like come on that exact same teacher yelled at the person right next to me because he drew on a note she probably wrote in 30 seconds.

I was that kid that enjoyed learning to the point that I would try to tutor my peers during class in elementary school, kinda figured "I get it, I can help you get it as well". I have never understood why an adult would stamp out a natural inclination to help and assist

The worst thing about school is everything is outdated. I’m in high school currently. In 6th grade we read an article about black holes in science class then given a worksheet. One of the questions was: black holes exist forever true or false. I knew that it was wrong so I chose false. When we went over it I said: but what about Hawking radiation (something that Steven hawking discovered in the 70s). My teacher just told me it wasn’t on the curriculum. When we learned about atoms and stuff they told us that everything was made of atoms (not remotely true, we know that dark energy and matter make up 85% of the universe), we were told that there were 2 kinds of quarks (there are 6), they said that the atom is the smallest thing that is matter (there are many things that aren’t atoms that are matter ex: plasma is a soup of electrons and atomic nuclei), they said that matter can’t be created or destroyed (it can be converted into energy through particle annihilation by colliding a particle and anti particle turning the matter into energy). There are also the parts of history they really like to skip. In social studies when we learned about the Cold War we grazed over the Kennedy Assassinations. They said that in ww2 the us refrained from committing war crimes yet the us would execute Italian prisoners of war. School is really bad at teaching things because it seems like our curriculum was from the fucking 50s. At my school they fucking made everyone opt in to the lesson about evolution because it was against god or something like that. The cherry on top of the shit sandwich with pretzels on the side and an extra large glass of piss to drink is that we had to have a discussion on school shootings and when I asked the teacher how often a shooting happens he said that in the county they take a weapon from a kid once a week. A weapon being taken away isn’t a school shooting so he gave me a non answer but the worst part of that answer is that a screwdriver, needle or hammer is considered a weapon. The worst part is that the teachers don’t even have to be well informed or decent people. A good quarter of the teachers are fucking hypocrites. They will be the biggest assholes while saying shit about being respectful. There are tons of teachers that order kids around because they have no other power.
The worst thing about school is they didn't teach you how to think for yourself! Had you had a good teacher, they would've asked you to write a report on why you thought the test was wrong and they would've allowed you an opportunity to express yourself and expand your thinking by examining both sides of the matter and offering substantiation of your position. This should have then improved your grade...your appreciation of the educational process and respect for your educator! ...and when it came to your social studies, I suspect your educator had a leftist bent on history! You have to understand that in the United States, the Democrat Party and Leftists have been attempting to cover up their sins through history (since Andrew Jackson) by pointing fingers and making excuses and literally changing the narratives on what actually happened...for at least a half century! I have run across many young people who actually think Abraham Lincoln was a Democrat! You have a sincere grievance with your education that can only be corrected by research and activity on your part!
Y'know, here in Brazil the problem is more of the students than for thoss teachers, even tho there are many dipshits that think education is just making us memorise the periodic table. But at the other side of the coin, there was my favorite teacher in 4th grade that when someone was struggling to learn something, she asked the student what was their hobby or something like that, just know more about the kid and also making him/her calmer in order to teach them step-by-step and saying what was its porpurse. When she didn't know the answer she always said somethng like "Hm? Well, I don't know either. Teachers usually say things they don't understand here in school." God bless that lady
Hate to play devil's advocate here, but a lot of things are outdated just because of the time it takes to get the curriculum approved. It has to go through several stages of advisory boards and allow for community involvement. I remember a school (not mine, though maybe mine did have one and I didn't know about it,) had to have what was essentially a town hall meeting to discuss adding education on Tourettes to their curriculum. (I'm not really sure why a school would make that part of its required learning, but maybe it was of local importance.) And then the books have to be approved by just as much bureaucracy, and get printed and distributed. The speed of humankind's ability to generate information has outpaced its ability to approve and vet it for the next generation.
IcicleFerret so why is evolution taught in schools as a theory when it is a product of reason and has very, very few assumptions. Occom’s razor says that the explanation with fewest assumptions is true yet in high school the unit was prefaced with the statement that it was just a theory and that it was ok to believe in whatever you want and they sent us home with a letter to tell our parents. A real productive use of time. Also thank you for being devil’s advocate, a good chunk of the population doesn’t even know what it is sadly.
@@Asdf-wf6en It's taught as a theory because it is a theory, right up there with the theory of intelligent design, (that there's some alien entity that created the genetic code,) the theory of the intergalactic traveler, (that life originated elsewhere in the universe and came to Earth on a space rock,) and the theory of life as a simulation, (that life as we know it doesn't exist, we're just a digital simulation in an alien computer.) Until we can perfect time travel and travel back through time to witness the origin of life for ourselves, we can only speculate. So. Yes, the theory of evolution remains a theory.
Yes!! I remember always seeking a reason to avoid attending school - not easy to find convincing ones when you're raised in a household of teachers. From high school in particular being sick at home sounded nicer than attending classes.

Standard schools is why I'm infinitely glad I'm in an art school rn. In my old school, I failed every single class except for choir (that being the only one I enjoyed). Now, in my second year of high school, I go to an art school that promotes creativity, working with others in a healthy way, and is just overall a very supportive and accepting school. The teachers there treat us as equals and humans who actually deserve rights and opinions, rather than mindless children who can't think for themselves.
Alot of our teachers pick the "smart ones" and they instantly like them, the ones who aren't smart are either ignored or made fun of, there was once a teacher that every time you answer something wrong instead of saying "no, try again, maybe you'll get it next time" she would say "what?? Is that even an answer??" And made the student never raised their hand again, and if no one raises their hands she would call someone by random and never call the smart ones, yes she is pushing us to study more, but why would a child study after being humiliated by their own classmates. Everyone that passed Gr 6 had trauma from that teacher but was relieved that the same subject but different teacher was someone better.

Teachers are also a problem - some despise the school system, but others have grown to love it over the years. I've been passionate about biology and zoology since I was a kid, so I was very excited to go to high school and talk to teachers who could actually answer my questions. But I was unlucky and ended up with a very strange teacher - at first, she seems sweet and nice, doesn't assign a lot of homework, and bends the rules a bit if it's supposed to help you. The problem is that she absolutely hates any questions, even if you ask them. You know, she finishes the topic and says the typical "are there any questions?". And then she has a problem with you if you asked her anything, especially if it's not in the textbook and goes beyond the school scope (which is kind of funny, because in final exams there are supposed to be questions beyond the school scope). She has a lot of incorrect, stupid opinions - she's prolife, doesn't know shit about biology at the university level, and has a lot of weird, incorrect theories (e.g., male seahorses aren't really pregnant, they swallow babies and keep them that way XD). She's also sexist and treats women like shit, she also has the stupidest grading system I've ever seen (she gives you open questions and expects you to write only summaries and drawings, she IS going to yell at you if your drawing is ugly or if you wrote too much). She has greatly damaged my passion for biology, it used to be my greatest passion, but now it's just a small spark. Sometimes it lights up a little, but then I remember how many times she embarrassed me in front of the class for just asking a question and I lose motivation. It hurts a lot. this comment may sound a bit weird, English isn't my native language. my biology teacher isn't mad at me because my native grammar sucks lmao
I desperately hope you go into biology. The world needs people like you and I would hate for one small petty person, whose opinion you don't respect, to ruin your passion. Get past her class and then show her a real biologist. Don't let someone stupid control your life. I hope you win a Nobbel prize in biology someday.

Absolutely agree, modern-day teachers seem to adore the crushing conditions they, and the students are subjected to for excessive hours on end for 5 days a week. It's no wonder why students wish to be sick so often, the societal system is utter hell.
Some of my teachers sad that too. Some of them had actually helped. They are probably lying to you. In fact they love to teach us thing that we are never going to use in our jobs. Because they don't have the skills to teach you better.
*Lets find a nickname* That's what I would've said if this was a public school. But it was not. I've finished a private middle and high-school in the same building, spending time with mostly the same teachers. There are of course bad teachers in there, but the best ones I know sparked and helped develop my passsions. My Physics teacher was the number one reason I was interested in drawing and animation, since he was so unconventional with his teaching methods. I'm not kidding. If you really meant what you said, you probably have a really bad luck when it comes to getting good teachers that understand the situation of everyone else and the system as a whole.
Here in canada it was the same story. I only ever made it in school because I took adult ed after high school. Now those teachers were passionate about teaching. Sure the classes where longer, but the breaks in between classes where also longer. Also, the students were not dickwads that would interrupt the teacher every 5 minutes. We all wanted to learn... So it was very enjoyable. In high school, I failed with low marks and I didn't care... But in adult ed, i passed with full marks in every class, and I cared deeply about my grades. There is a lot of sense in what this man is saying!
Huh, weird. My teachers were more along the lines of "We want to do it differently, and we will, as long as you keep it within the classroom, however you still need a final grade." The teachers that had this attitude were cool as hell and very informative.
So many people say that: "Don't judge the school system just because you got an F in class, just try and you'll enjoy it". As a straight-A student, I've never found a moment happier than when I got a day off from school.
This is so true, it's sad. So many people, including myself, have told our parents and sometimes even school staff that we're not learning a lot of necessary information. I graduated high school last year and we never learned important information like how to pay taxes and bills and how to properly get a real job other that how to fill out an application or write a resume(and not very well according to my dad). We were never taught how to actually even talk to people. Speech class was just "get in front of everyone and spout information you memorized" and if you can't do it or mess up, you get a bad grade. And it's even worse for people who have anxiety. Several people I knew had panic attacks during speech class because they were required to talk in front of everyone. They tried to teach us how to budget, but all they did was give us a paper, say we had a certain amount of money, and told us to choose from certain options that cost a certain amount of money and see how much money we had left. That doesn't teach us how to budget, that teaches us to choose the cheapest options that end up costing a lot more anyway because cheap options are a lot more problematic and break down much faster because it's made so poorly. I can only imagine how difficult it was for the "special" kids, who were almost completely separated from everyone else, only seeing and being around the other kids in the 4 minutes we get to get from one class to the next. In certain situations, I can see how that would be ok, but still. They almost never even interact or talk to all the other students. It's sad honestly. I live in America, and I've heard so many people say how horrible the school system is, and they're right. Sorry for the rant, it's just so frustrating how we learn almost no basic skills in school because it's "the parent's job" to teach their child that stuff, when most parents around where I live don’t even really care much about their child or children.
I know. And considering all school tests is out memory it stresses me out even more because if I’m not interested in something I zone out but then I miss something and when the test comes I have to worry about my parents seeing a bad grade and getting yelled at for being lazy even though the school system is extremely flawed.
The biggest thing I've learned from experience is that a lot of the learning abilities depends on how the subject is taught. Example: we've either all heard of or had the cliche old but fun science teacher. The old carefree guy that likes to light stuff on fire and make everything entertaining. I had one of those last year for my anatomy class and it was easily the greatest class I've ever had. Every single day, walking into his room you knew something unexpected and fun was going to happen within the next 80 minutes, you just didn't know what. Of course he still taught us everything we needed to know and tested us, except he was lenient about it. He wasn't strict about being quiet during tests. In fact, he would actively converse with us as we were taking the test as if we were just talking like normal people and not in school. And then everyone would just finish when they finished. When he would do "lectures", he would sit in his chair in front of the class and cross his legs on top of the desk and just talk casually. He'd go off and tell funny stories that were at least slightly related to what we were learning. And he didn't have the traditional teacher's filter. For example, when we first got our mink's to dissect, he made it a point to warn us that the males still had their penises. He then went off on a ramble talking about how different animals become erect, casually talking about it like it's something you'd talk about at a family dinner. And he's doing this while we're taking the wet minks out of the bags and pouring out the "gravy" as he called it. Likewise, on the last day of school when we were dissecting out the digestive tract, he encouraged us to jump rope with the intestines because they were so long. Also, when he pricked our fingers so we could look at our blood, he encouraged us to give him the finger as we came up. He'd constantly make 80's references and then say that we have nothing in common when we don't understand them. My point being, his class never felt like school. It just felt like when the fun uncle comes over to babysit and you just learned some stuff as a side effect. The way he interacted with us inspired us to interact back and it was almost a loop of the students and the teacher encouraging each other's antics. He made class fun and entertaining and thus, it was easy to learn because you wanted to. It wasn't boring on the days when we would just sit and listen to him talk because you never knew when he would break off into a completely unrelated tangent and talk about who knows what. It was a more effective version of the "ineffective learning". He made it interesting so it was easier to remember, because you would often associate what you needed to remember with some kind of (more memorable) random thing that he said or did. I will always remember that the instrument that measures blood pressure is called a sphygmomanometer because he said the last part sounded like that one song the two headed alien muppet sings.

Schools are just horrible. I'm not even 18 yet, I even know multiple problems about School. First, I agree about the learning styles. I'm a good level in Maths and English, (for my year). Sadly. Since my recent Maths test, I've moved down. Despite me knowing I should study, and I could've studied. I never did it. People call that laziness but if I did study, I would've forgotten. You see, I have a bad memory. I can't remember alot of things and I can get distracted too easily. I can be a good student and actually learn, it's just that my memory is letting me down. Maths itself, is shown to be one of the most hated subjects. I understand why, Maths is complicated and u don't really use most things in it. However, it helps you with living. Taxes, Budgeting, Money, etc. The layout of Maths just seems very complicated. It's very hard to memorise it all, this is for one subject. Every other subject can follow. Homework is also a problem, we work 7 hours and 55 minutes at School. My family work for 9 hours (including breaks + lunch), sometimes below or higher. I see why Homework is used, it's used to do something at home and for you to learn, but... Homework was invented as a punishment, this could mean in a sense that we're getting punished. Not only that, we work all day. Forced to sit, listen and sometimes risk our bladders because some adult won't let someone to go because of 'misbehaving'. We then go home, all tired from seven classes. Then, you receive a pile of homework. That's like being forced to work overtime, which is illegal. You can't be forced to work overtime, it's completely optional. Oh, and let's talk about how classes deal with bullies! Completely BS. Teachers don't do anything about bullying. They try to tell everyone the harmful consequences of bullying, but their gonna carry on. People won't stop without a good reason, it's not like the Teachers help either. Oh right! Their busy sitting on their chairs, on their phones or drinking their morning coffee. I haven't mentioned English alot, it's because I like English. It has a good layout and I actually don't do alot of memorising. If you want help on a essay, just read the source and you have everything you need! That's what other subjects lack, a fun teacher who gives fun activities after hard work. It's better than working hard then you having to repeat all over again. I truly believe it's the Teachers, our freedom, homework, tests and social interaction we want to change. Teachers are usually very bossy and shouts at anyone who even dares moves a muscle. I'd prefer if we do hard work and the uncompleted work is homework, then you have a fun time as a treat. Less tests proves to be better, it gives more time to actually learn instead of forgetting right after. We would want to also change how people get punishments, we're told that we have a dress code and that. However, I notice many people breaking dress codes and even one of the top staff don't do anything about it. I believe we shouldn't have uniforms at all, just give punishments to people who dress inappropriately. Anyway, that's all I have to say.
@JUSTREGULARSCREAMINGAAHH I wrote this two years ago. I don't even know what the hell I typed up, but my beliefs are clearly different. I have actually done an updated post about school on reddit. Your point is just showing what schools are exactly teaching us. The correct use of "they're" and "they are" isn't one of them apparently.
It hasn't changed in a century, why would 4 more years make a difference? While I love the idea of changing the educational system, that would be a massive undertaking that would likely end in something worse anyway... then again, maybe I'm just a pessimist... lol
I’ve tried telling this to my mom, who’s a teacher, and she denies it every single time. I don’t remember a single thing I learned for like, 3 different school years and many others I only remember a very small amount of stuff.
a good start to improve school is teaching children why they should care. Imagine telling students before their first history class, why we study history. To learn about the past, to understand the present and estimate the future. to gain perspective for our own lives through those that came before us. Imagine doing that for every class, tell them why they would need this in their real life. especially when they are older and close to the end of their school life. get in touch with reality. My grades went up an entire unit when I started doing this to myself in school. When I could give myself a reason to care.
Even then it's still an idiotic system, it doesn't comply with kids circadian rhythm (sleep patterns) it is way to long (around 6 hours) when it should be 3 hours this would captivate the children and not bore them to death or feel a fight or flight mentality. Schools don't do a good job at interactive teaching, they have a terrible teacher-student ratio, children aren't given the same rights as adults and are treated like prisoners (like being denied the use of a bathroom) schools are dull institutions with no colour or character, attendence is overvalued with threats being sent to parents for having the kid be off school, schools are filled with viral pathogens, it's an unsafe environment with multiple crimes being commited in these dangerous institutions a day, its an outdated concept, we live in a world where home education with the assistance of Ai and free courses everywhere. We dont have to do 8 subjects a week to evidently focus on only one in college ECT ECT. But I do agree with you, telling the child why they are learning something is much more effective than just throwing a book in their face and forcing them to do homework and outright punishing said child for not doing school at home. It sparks the child's interest in the topic and makes the child learn themselves outside of school.
History teaches you nothing about the future and barely even explains the present. For example as someone from Poland I can guess how teaching people about Holocaust would explain why a lot of people currently hate and distrust Germans but I consider that utterly unfair that future generations are looked down at because of something their great-grandfathers peers did. What history teaches is hate and stereotypes. And it is actually quite close to our ages. I find literally no value in knowing that in the distant past some stupid Polish king took some other country princess as a wife (I don't even remember her nationality because it was so stupid and useless information) and afterwards her family ended up governing Poland or something like that. Stupid people in stupid ages. What does it teach us? We don't even have kings nor political marriages anymore. And the fact that people are stupid is well known even without the story of the past.
@@Astrid-88 Some history should be taught, some history is entertaining so some people may like it, and other historical events tie into our lives today. I do agree that you have to teach history how it was and clarify that this mightn't be as relevant today.

I went to a rather poor school system, but those were the teachers who gave me the foundation to critically think and to love to learn on my own. It is not only money that makes education better, it the allowing teachers to teach and having a milieu that supports individuals seeking knowledge. It is also having available a plethora of choices in what to learn as well as how to learn. Pathways to different vocations must be developed so that passions can be pursued in the clearest of ways. But, ultimately you have to have a culture that accepts and allows those pursuits in a true free marketplace, not one that government and special interests dictate.
My school has drafting classes. They lead into one of two paths, architecture or engineering. We have several other classes like this, but they aren't weighted (not needed to graduate). It's stupid.

I skipped a grade in school because apparently I was “intelligent.” I wasn’t happy about it. It only guaranteed that I would have higher expectations and more pointless work. The entirety of high school I got bad grades, but they were bad JUST enough so that I could stay a grade above. High school was the absolute worst for me. I was bullied constantly, the work was stressful, and I developed depression and anxiety. The only time I was glad to be a grade ahead was because I got to leave school earlier. Honestly fuck education in America.

Stop whining they had it even harder. In their generation they were beaten with a pointer if they behaved badly. Now teachers cant control the students at all since they are afraid of them and possible court and media attention (EU)
Jin- So? There you have a reasson Why most teachers are fucked up. It was forbidden to hit children in school 1979 in most countries. That does not mean that people got hit, no teacher that I have was ever hit in school.
This is mainly a primary school thing, but when organising classes, they always put members of friend groups in different classes. I actually brought this up at a student council meeting, and the teachers said that "well be talking too much and won't do well on the test".
I left high school at the age of 15 and went to college to follow my passion for art and film making, I am now currently the happiest I've ever been :-)

I was in Finnish primary school from like 98 to 07. From the very beginning I had full attention and curiosity to school. Didn't like home work though so I wiggled my way out of them by different means when we got them. Could say I was even better than average student(we did have tests). But all that changed we got to the 5th grade. Our class teacher changed and she pretty much hated boys. Whatever we did was a matter of contacting home. We did quite crazy things as well and I was pretty "free child" but most of them were just the usual trickery what boys of that age would do. But it wasn't just the trickery, it was also the performance in lessons. If you were boy you had to show the most brilliant results or comment to get bit of praise where girls got the normal amount of praise and cheering to keep child going and proud. We boys were basically demonized. As the result me and many others stopped giving a F regarding school. Even my mother says that woman partly ruined our education.

I've been playing video games from a very early age. My native language isn't English, so everything I know is (mostly) from video games and such. School has taught me less than 2% of what I know, and when we were learning about a specific part of the English language, it was more of a reassurance that I know it right than actually teaching me something new. My English teachers kept asking me how I know so much more than others. I told them it was video games, but they never believed me and kept pushing me saying things like "Come on, there must be something else" or "You must be excellent from every other subject, too!". But, I am far from that. The only thing I am good at is English, everything else is a 3 (C) or less. And people say "It's just a game!".

I began my schooling from 3yrs old, a large portion of it would start all the way from 5.30 am... and during high school, I'd often had to take extra lessons outside of school until way late at night just so I wouldn't fall behind.... would wake up at 1 or 2 am in the morning to add in extra hours of self study during final tests...I feel robbed 🥲in one way, but also a weird sense of accomplishment for surviving it all. Hey, we all are survivors of this broken system! congratz to us~
Broken GBA X You can't, because you're stuck in school for the whole day and only have time to work during the evening. I don't know how long your school days are, but normally I don't even have a break in the whole day.
I hate how parents and teachers will say "just sleep earlier," when presented with the fact that teens physically can't wake up at 6am to catch a bus. Whether I go to bed at eight or eleven, I will still naturally fall asleep at eleven, no matter what.
tbh this is something most people can train their body to do. but when students have loads of work, sports or other activities, health issues etc. that interfere with their sleep schedule, it is sometimes easier said than done
I remember that when I was in kindergarten, the teachers didn't let us to the bathroom because they thought that we would just sit there for a long time, which most kids did. But I didn't do that. I just wanted to pee but they didn't let me. Later I peed myself and they told me I was bad because I peed myself.
i used to be a straight A student that loved getting good grades. one day i lost my dad and it took a toll on my mental. this led me to not pay as much attention to school. this lack of attention led me to getting bad grades. and those bad grades made me feel like i had failed in life, only at 13 years old. fast forward to me being 15 i was so close to ending my life. i thought it was over and i would never succeed. so i decided to do online school for my last year of high school and it was the best decision that i made. my mental health has been amazing, i haven't felt like that in a long time. i now have a set plan of what i want to do in the future and i finally feel confident about that plan the school system is terrible
Sometimes there's one teacher who you always remember. Mine was a strict guy but very fun in the middle of his lesson since he gives little breaks in between lesson cuz he doesn't want the room to be tense as hell
Finnish student here. One more thing that can also greatly affect the success of our schools is that they're far less authoritarian. Our teachers don't think they're superior and should be obeyed at all times. Most of the time teachers and students can engage in very casual discussions about everyday life. When teachers respect students and treat them as equals, students will do the same in most cases. This is especially true in secondary education, as younger people may not be interested in having good relations with their teachers.
unknown2000 That’s true. That’s also some thing I really like about most of my teachers. Sometimes I and my friend would just stay for 10-15 minutes after class and talk to the teacher about basically everything from school topics to sexism. Also our teachers use the polite form when they talk to us, just like we do when we talk to them.
Yeah, they really become easy people to talk to when you get to know them and they get to know you. I saw one of my teachers while shopping one day, we ended up talking closer to half an hour about everything. They can really teach you a lot, even outside of school.
unknown2000 I have a really horrible math teacher who doesn’t care about us at all and is so negative all the time. I haven’t heard one joke come out of her mouth that wasn’t making fun of one of my classmates. That class also happens to be the one I’m doing worst in.
I feel like the one thing school and parents should know, the only reason we prefer playing videogames over studying is because its fun, we like something thats fun. If its fun, we'll absolutely keep doing it, if we hate it, we are not going there. School has this issue thinking that adopting the trends of some games thats famous will make students continue going there. We only like the trend if its fun, not if its just placed like some sticker on the box. I will bet all my grades that if school was fun, everyone would always want to go back to school. The only reason people reminisce about school is _because the friends we made,_ not because we learn how to find the circumference of a fucking circle for the 70th time.

I genuinely want to move to Finland because of the school system there. I have forgotten almost everything that I've been taught in school because of how they taught it to me. The stress from having to memorize everything and having homework has created so many mental issues for me. The school systems need to stop being so blind and ignorant and start listening to the facts. Someone needs to get them to listen, and it starts with us.

The greatest gift my parents gave me was pulling me out of public school in 2nd grade. I was doing terrible in school and it made me miserable, but once my mom started homeschooling me she focused primarily on cultivating a love of learning. She let me choose a lot of what I studied, whenever I became curious. I learned a lot about American history and astronomy during those years because I liked it so we scheduled it. I only went back to public school for high school because by then I wanted to learn more about engineering, art, and automotive repair, which were all things my mom couldn’t help me with. I got through high school okay although a lot of the classes were brutal at times, and later flunked out of college after a year. It’s weird, when I’m curious about something and want to learn about it I can soak up the information like a sponge. I have no problem teaching myself, but in school I struggle.

Especially if you have ADHD. Schools don’t have to present information in an interesting way to survive. They get paid anyway. But educational UA-camrs aren’t likely to take off if their videos aren’t interesting. As a side effect of having to survive on UA-cam, educational videos are more likely to get through to people with ADHD.

I was 11.
That is horrible, as someone who suffers from bad anxiety that basically sounds like hell and trauma
same thing happend to me except it was at 12
and the reason is bcz my drawing of a 2 year old...
I hate it so much
I never wanna get to write on the board ever again, but i will get forced to ofc :(

Teachers usually say things they don't understand here in school."
God bless that lady

Absolutely agree, modern-day teachers seem to adore the crushing conditions they, and the students are subjected to for excessive hours on end for 5 days a week.
It's no wonder why students wish to be sick so often, the societal system is utter hell.
Most teachers I had in high-school were like "Yeah, we know our school system is shit, we'd want to do it differently, but our hands are tied."
Some of my teachers sad that too. Some of them had actually helped. They are probably lying to you.
In fact they love to teach us thing that we are never going to use in our jobs. Because they don't have the skills to teach you better.

Anyway, that's all I have to say.
if schools were better you would've used the right "they're"
@JUSTREGULARSCREAMINGAAHH I wrote this two years ago. I don't even know what the hell I typed up, but my beliefs are clearly different. I have actually done an updated post about school on reddit. Your point is just showing what schools are exactly teaching us. The correct use of "they're" and "they are" isn't one of them apparently.

a good start to improve school is teaching children why they should care.
It sparks the child's interest in the topic and makes the child learn themselves outside of school.
and five years later still the same
History teaches you nothing about the future and barely even explains the present.

I skipped a grade in school because apparently I was “intelligent.” I wasn’t happy about it. It only guaranteed that I would have higher expectations and more pointless work.

They can really teach you a lot, even outside of school.
my teachers do the same (Brazil)or maybe it's just because we're really fucking friendly, or i'm an aggressive piece o' shit
unknown2000 I have a really horrible math teacher who doesn’t care about us at all and is so negative all the time. I haven’t heard one joke come out of her mouth that wasn’t making fun of one of my classmates. That class also happens to be the one I’m doing worst in.
It's the same in Ireland. Most my teachers are sound.
The only reason people reminisce about school is _because the friends we made,_ not because we learn how to find the circumference of a fucking circle for the 70th time.

school already prepared you for that.

Agreed
Schools: Teens stay up late
Also Schools when teens go home: heres lots of homework to finish
Moonlight io it is, I just got done with my senior year of highschool and tbh it was kinda useless. You’ll be more successful if you just focus on what you like and make a living out of it

Me as a 6 year old before school happened to me: I am a natural explorer
Me during school at age 12: I don't have time to explore anything I like!
Me at the end of school at age 18: ... Must get University diploma...
I've learned more on UA-cam and in my games than I have in school. The type of schooling that we have right now is completely pointless.
They need to listen to the students too
Same. I learned so much on UA-cam after one year. I prob learned more on UA-cam than in school after 6 years
I used to only know capital letters. I went on UA-cam once, my handwriting is like, 80% Ariel font now!
Me too
Well - that would mean bringing the Government of the U.S down. The Government only wants brainwashed individuals who cannot think and obey, vote to compensate political corruption - so they will do everything in their power to make sure that doesn’t happen.
I have no problem teaching myself, but in school I struggle.
your lucky man for haveing such a lovely mom and a chance to find your true passion which lot of students can't able to do because of our outdated school system 😭😭😭
Same fr, if you are curious about it you just learn ir fast
@@danko5866 In the U.S. parents can choose to educate their kids themselves. As long as a kid is getting some kind of education it's fine, and in my case I had no problem re-entering public school as a high schooler. It's a massive commitment to homeschool your kid so it's not for everyone, but if you have the time and a good reason to, it can really help kids who struggle in public school. Plus there are lots of homeschool parent groups and programs for extracurricular activities like sports and PE, so there are lots of resources out there to help you do it well.
Your mom is an amazing woman, bless her for that
ur so lucky. Those puplic schools are litteraly not helping. and you can sue litteraly any school you were in (if you were at least once in a fight). Blaming the victim for fighting back as eaqually guilty could be counted as bullying too. its also litteraly like saying any country was bad because they fought against germans in ww2.
I'm French. I started learning English at school in the first grade, but up until the 9th grade, I couldn't say a word. Then I started watching a lot of movies and tv shows in English and ended up learning more in two months than I did in 9 years. Just saying.
Yeah. I am an anglophone, and I ways found learning French hard. I still do, but I enjoy it much more than I did from 1st to 4th grade. We got so much homework in a French school. Like it would be 3 hours long, and the English teachers were awful. Like worse than the French first language teacher I have in an English high school. Btw, I live in a very French area in Canada, if that information is useful.
I'm francophone too (not French) I didn't pay attention to English before I started watching an animated show named "miraculous " which was actually French but the new episodes always somehow came in English first .So I started to take English seriously until I realized: damn is it just me or learning that language for watching a show and not for school is the best way I've ever learned something 😅
@@ziondoesrandomstuff3906 i learnt quite alot at home but if i never had those learns i wouldnt know basic french. Anyways my teacher just tells us the answer.
I'm Spanish and after learning English for years at school, I barely knew "the basics". Then I found out about the internet, and started listening to music in English and talk to a lot of people too, which surprise surprise. That was for a year, then when I came to school knewing more English than the others everyone would ask me: "how do you know so much?". Never told my secret to anyone! And i don't regret a thing, either. I am now learning Norwegian, which is something that I wouldn't been able to if I only learned stuff at school.
Same with me except i learnt it through videogames and yt and i could speak it decently well from 5th grade
