Unlocking a decade-old antibiotics resistance problem with AlphaFold - Google DeepMind

- Marcelo Sousa and Megan Mitchell at the University of Colorado Boulder are looking at a different approach against antibiotic resistance: targeting the resistance mechanism itself, controlled in this case with enzymes.
Using AlphaFold, (an AI system developed by Google DeepMind that predicts a protein’s 3D structure from its amino acid sequence) Marcelo and Megan explain how they solved the structure of one such enzyme - a challenge that a decade of experimentation couldn’t complete - in minutes.

Deepmind did the right thing here - offering a database to the scientific community of their protein folding predictions. Over the next decade, there's going to be drips of biomedical innovation that followed from that move. That's a decision worth saluting.

I love that the predictions from Alpha Fold helps find the structure from measurement, and each new structure can be used to further finetune Alpha Fold. Positive Feedback loop.
This work is very very important. Algorithm’s that teach themselves all kind of protein shapes like in AlphaFold are the future. So thankfull to be alive right at this very moment! Thanks for your historical work!

@@AkronJosh I didn't follow the news about this, all I know is once you're resistance, there's nothing you can do about it. So knowing that there's works put into this, understandably makes me feel relieved
@@MaxingMix There is a thing you can do and humanity always did it... use the immune system. To have it as reriable as possible you need to have a healthy lifestyle, but it's easier to take a drug and don't care...
