Greg from DMUG's video: • My absurd Apple Store ...
I have felt a shift in Apple, and I can't let it go.
Here is a video where I attempt to articulate what I've been thinking. I will have definitely missed things, but essentially, I'm unhappy about what I consider to be predatory and unethical practices in the name of Apple setting themselves up as a luxury brand.

Whenever I start to be intrigued by a new Apple product, I just remind myself that my laptop is a 2011 Lenovo T420 that I bought refurb for $250 in 2016, upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 16GB, upgraded the 250GB HDD to a 512GB SSD, bought an extra swappable battery, and installed Mint XFCE on it and it runs like new. Hell, I even have an SSD caddy that can replace the disc drive if I wanted to double up on storage. And I can STILL get parts for it now in 2023. Sure it's showing its age with its standard definition screen with terrible viewing angles, but everything works. And there are tons of laptops that you can go out and buy today where you can still do all that. But not if you buy a Mac.

Putting 8GB of RAM in the M3 MacBook Pro and pricing it for AUD$2699 is ludicrous. Asking for $300 more to add 8GB is insanity.

I'll be sticking with Mac laptops because of my profession but I think I'm done with Mac desktops unless there's big changes or youtube suddenly makes me enough money that it makes financial sense to review the desktops.
My M1 Max is stupidly expensive but also.... gonna go out and say it, despite it's stupid lack of upgrades, by far the best laptop experience I've ever had. It's made for getting shit done, it's battery life is top notch, dead silent, ideal keyboard and trackpad, amazing speakers, and small. It's sad as it's great despite Apple's obnoxious choice to make the storage bolted down.

Yes, you are correct. The money made from selling the CRT iMac G3 models saved Apple, Inc. However, at the time, I only had eyes for the "beige" colored All-in-One Power Mac G3 (also called the molar Mac because it looked like a persons tooth). Why? Because these models had everything the iMac G3 had, plus a built-in floppy drive, built-in Zip drive, and three (3) open PCI expansion slots for items such as a card with USB "A" ports, a card with Fire-wire 400 ports, etc. (smile...smile).

With the release of the last MacBook, apple got so much hate for keeping the base model at 8GB and 256GB, I believe that they will upgrade to maybe 12GB and leave the storage at 256 since not many people complained about that and in a few years then upgrade the storage to 512GB and then a few more years down the line they will upgrade the RAM to 16GB, this makes perfect sense knowing apple, and this will keep most of the users satisfied. You're welcome.

Yes, Apple has become a luxury brand. It now only appeals to well-heeled consumers.
I recently bought an iPhone 15 for the same reason that I bought an Omega Seamaster watch and a Genesis G70. For the prestige.
I will probably upgrade to an iMac in the future for the same reason.
However, I bemoan the fact that we can no longer buy good-value personal computers. Hopefully, a Chinese manufacturer will step up to fill the void. Huawei or Xiaomi, perhaps?
Why can't Dell and HP manufacture high-quality products? There's something seriously wrong with these companies.

With Apple Silicon yields at 55%, and a per-wafer cost of $20k, it's not really a huge surprise that Apple is trying to use every functional die they can, which is probably why they're even selling 8GB models under the guise of "Apple Silicon Magic". This might be speculation on my part, but it's not unfounded. This is exactly what AMD did when it was selling 3-core Phenom X3 CPUs in 2007. In some cases you could re-enable the fourth core and have a stable system, in others you could not. It all depended on how distorted the lithographic projection on the silicon was (based on how far from the center of the wafer the die was during manufacturing.)

I bought a rMBP 2012 15 inch in mid 2012. It had 8GB RAM and it had a 256GB SSD. Note that the SSD is repleacable the RAM is soldered in. That computer still runs, just that I replaced the 256GB with a 1TB in 2016 and then a 2TB in 2021. The computer would run much better now had I bought a 16GB version but I think at that time these were not even in stock and this 8GB model had a lot of RAM for 2012.

Depends what productivity is for you. I don't need to do fancy A/V stuff - which is the ONLY thing a Mac has over Windows and Linux - and all the rest I can do it on Linux faster and quicker than on a Mac. And if I don't like something, I can just mod it and recompiled it.
But the best thing is, the world's businesses are running on Linux and BSD everywhere underneath, not on Macs. No Linux or BSD means no Internet for all those nice Macs (and Windows)...

I think that Apple really fell off ever since Jony Ive left in 2019. Sure, the products are more practical, and don't run like shit, but just don't feel the same. It may sound like I'm just stuck in the past, but I have a more emotional attachment to older designs. I think that this is not completely irrational because Jony Ive had complained about Cook's vision being less focused on design, and rather features and performance. I do think that Apple products have actually improved in value with their new chips in recent years, though.

Yes, the 8GB of RAM is too low, and it costs too much to upgrade it. That said, until someone can come out with a laptop as light as my M2 MBA that gets the same battery life without killing performance like Windows on x86 does, I'll keep paying the premium for the innovation that Apple made possible. So, I am rooting for Windows/Linux on ARM to really take off and give Apple some competition. That is what is really missing from the equation.

Valid points, and 8gb of Ram is a joke for sure, as well as a 256gb drive. BUT…. Apple products are in a league of their own and every company has humble beginnings where they focus on market share. In my opinion, Apple is not our friend and they unnecessarily block certain repairs and upgrades under the guise of security. With all that said, there is a huge used and refurbished market for those that can’t or won’t pay the Apple tax. I have a refurbished Mac Studio and a used MacBook Pro 14. The discounts were right in line with what I felt is good value. People will pay that Apple, tax, and for the rest of us, we will pay what we think it is worth.

Other than that, try to just make videos that you like making. Chasing what you think your audience will like will hurt your brain.

Never wanted a Mac really but can see the appeal to people who know little about tech, or like the niche editing software they excel at. Though a hackintosh can do it at a fraction of the price Mac's are something that on the surface appears to just work. The fact that iPhones are so popular and the way they integrate means you don't have to learn another operating system. However they are pricing themselves out of the market as a status symbol and the fact that upgrades have to come from apple is a joke. I hope that EU will now go after them again on right to repair for iPhone, MacBook and pro models. Still if people like them why not, I'll stick with self built pc that I can upgrade incrementally, I prefer function over form and value really. I think they peaked at iPod. The sad thing is that Samsung are trying to head that way with luxury status symbol phones losing essential features such as user expandable storage and headphone jacks in their high end S phones, and pushing towards cloud storage and ever increasing costs of this. Never give your essential data to someone else to look after, you'll regret it

“Appeal to people who know little about tech”? I have an embarrassingly long list of PC components I've purchased from my local MicroCenter over the years. Been running my own home lab and build new PCs about once a year (not to mention all of the server and storage upgrades). I wish I could’ve said all that sounding more humble, or at least not like I was gloating, but I wanted to make the point that me using a Mac as my main computer/daily driver has nothing to do with me knowing little about tech. I also do not use any applications that are Mac only, because as I stated I do build PCs and run several servers at home. As someone that is very familiar with macOS, Windows, and Linux, the appeal of macOS and some of the Apple products is the “walled garden” or ecosystem. There is also an appeal to having an operating system that is not littered with advertising and bloatware. There are many other reasons why I prefer macOS for my everyday needs, but it is not because of Mac specific software or any lack of knowledge about tech.

Assuming you did not write a sarcastic comment, that is theoretically true only because Apple uses the SSD when the RAM runs out, just like Windows creates page files to the hard drive when it runs out of RAM. The performance decreases regardless because software cannot overcome hardware bottlenecks. I use an M1 Mac Mini with 8 GB at work & can attest to the performance problems. Increased read/write cycles to the soldered-on SSD means expensive repair in the future that involves reballing the NAND chips besides the standard soldering process, and that assumes you took it to a capable third party repair shop. Apple will just swap the whole motherboard out & charge you for nearly the cost of the machine. You either pay Apple upfront for more RAM & storage or you pay later to repair the problem they caused.

It's technically 6, beacuse you use UNIFIED memory, not ram. Better call it iGPRAM, because (In a very simple way) those 8GB are split for RAM and GPU. Not to mention that MacOS does weird stuff with cache so if you have an 8GB you'll use 5.5 or 6 just by turning on the computer, if it was 16, you'll use about 10 or 12, and the 24GB models will use around 14 to 16 GB (Again, just by turning on your computer)
