A video request from my friend, Claire, via Facebook. The Tricorn Centre was a shopping, nightclub and car park complex in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. It was designed in the Brutalist style by Owen Luder and Rodney Gordon and took its name from the site's shape which from the air resembled a tricorn hat. Constructed in the mid-1960s, it was demolished in 2004. It was home to one of the first Virgin Megastores and housed the largest Laser Quest arena in Europe.

For some reason, this video seems to be getting some minor attention, about 5 years after I uploaded it. But thank you to my recent viewers and commenters.

18 years ago The Tricorn Centre started to get demolished. It’s crazy where the time has disappeared.

Reminds me a lot of the old concrete Drake Circus shopping centre in Plymouth. It's ironic they actually managed to build an even uglier monstrosity in its place.

I was a nineties kid in portsmouth & I miss this place, didn't use the shops but laser quest was great. Also imo it kinda looks like a level of a game, like chemical plant zone off of sonic, or twisted metal, proper 90s vibes, it had character. Anyways nice footage hehe

    Good stuff.

Central Portsmouth needs more parks, not car parks. The greedy council makes money out of every inch of parking space. They should go to Europe and see how its done in civilised places like Holland.

I remember seeing a piece of graffiti every time I passed the Tricorn building on the bus. It was of Sonic the Hedgehog but he wasn't wearing any shoes, and the artist decided to make his feet look like kidney beans. Does anyone else remember this? I cannot find it anywhere in photos and videos.

I lived in Portsmouth from 1969 to 1984. Portsmouth was a shithole and the Tricorn was the turd on the top of the cake. It was a miserable building. So glad the thing has gone along with those monstrosities on top of the hill (Portsdown Park).

Officially the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen building wise

Voted the ugliest building in the UK on Radio 4.. Growing up in the area I remember how within months of it being leaked and was dark and dingy. Hated by everyone I ever met and accurately called by Prince Charles "a mildewed lump of elephant droppings" If the people of Portsmouth and the surrounding areas had been able to this hideous badly built building would have been demolished withing a year of being built.
