I was born in St Mary's in 1971, Portsmouth is almost unrecognisable now as the place I grew up in. I remember the first 5 years of my life living in Lincoln Road and a lot of my relatives lived in the same street or just round the corner. Silver jubilee 77 was an amazing street party the like of which we'll probably never see again 👍😁
Was 76 for me & i recognized most of them pics, a lot of the buildings are still there especially old Portsmouth, rudmore is the main change in the city & where the rest of the motorway is now like at hilsea, i guess that was Portsmouth airport but never seen it before. Didn't recognise Sloane square & i went past it earlier while playing a game of geogeuser.
I grew up in portchester we rode ours by vospers, there was a little track bit there before they built britax (not sure what it is now) when weren't climbing the castle or sliding down hill rd chalk pit on bread crates & making dens.
Quite a few photos of the Portsdown and Horndean Light Railway- the tramway. When I was a kid some of the downstairs saloons from these trams were up at Lovedean- sheds or chalets. Fascinating views of the city and surrounding villages.
does anyone have any photos of the prefabs on Portsdown hill. They were there from about 1948 - 1962. My childhood was spent running up and the hill with kids from the estate, Collyer Road, Portsdown Cresent, Cliff Road etc. Any memories?
I`m struggling to place 2.52, especially with what appears to be a double exposure. Can`t think of anywhere on thee island with those steps up, except maybe in cosham.
Lovely photos remembered a lot , but a bit to fast and shame there was no names of places and streets, but all in all great seeing the pictures thank you.
In the black and white pics, not a car in sight. If you took those people through “The Time Tunnel” they would run screaming at the huge car park that Portsmouth has become
I remember the airport vividly. The school sent us to visit the o.d Airspeed factory there but all they were building at the time was the fins for bombs. Then the day when the Avro 748s skidded on the grass resulting in its final closure. Sad!
Flew from there n the early 70s on an ‘air experience’ flight from where I worked - Kingston Mod. For Boys. We flew a circuit over Southampton Water and Solent to the Needles then back via St. Boniface and St. Helens. Aircraft was a Twin Pioneer. Still got the photos somewhere.

I remember rudmore being built, mid 80s, we used to take our BMXs over there and use it as a skate park 😂

You can slow it down in the setting's to 0.25 speed if you don't know still.

Sid Slape, the fishmonger in Drayton photo. I'm sure my mother had a job there in the 30's. Thought it wa portsmouth though.
So did my mother, in fact I think he taught my mother to drive and through that she was able to drive vans or lorries at Airspeed during the war.
Not seen the airport before interesting.

Change rate far too swift. No time to take it all in.
