I got my first pair of tonic Sta-Prest from Shirt King. 41 bloody years ago !!!! For The Specials, The Selecter & Madness on the 2Tone tour, 6th November 1979 at the Guildhall. My first ever gig at 11 years old, what a night!! Ah well, time flies whether you enjoy yourself or not. I have enjoyed most of it. PLAY UP POMPEY etc etc...
Yes every skinhead bought their gear from there. Ben sherman, shirts Doc martins and crombies Harringtons etc . More or less next to Shipps and Marks and Spencers side entrance . And across the way the rear entrance to Woolworths
I saw them at Reading University on that tour. What a treat that was. Saw many great bands at the Guildhall when I went to Portsmouth Poly between 1985 and 1988. PUP!!
Good to see Dinkie Benham, at 4:33 there. I was looking out for him. Gave me my first ferret, he did. And 'The Flower Girl', 4:10. Bloody kicking myself, trying to remember her name now! My old dear was always mentioning what they'd been chatting about. A? E? Can't remember. But, she always referred to her as " ... The Flower Girl ".
This is how it looked when I was in my teens. I moved abroad in 1980 and so it always looks like this when I think of Portsmouth, thank God. Went back a few years ago... unrecognizable and the character of the city has completely changed, not for the better in my humble opinion.
How lovely. Although I was from Reading at that time, my family holidayed in Southsea & Portsmouth & Commercial Rd area was always an attraction. Been down Charlotte St many a time during the late 40s into the 50s. Later with my own family during the 60s to the 90s. A hive of activity was Pompey & that market area. Great days, great memories.
Anyone remember john naylor. ( known as Flash) looking for a photo or video of him as he was my natural father. Born 1935. Died 1985. Used to have an ice cream van round.
as a kid in the 70s & 80s we went down the town all the time ' always busy ' always somthing to do ' no' days its utter crap ' shops just about getting by ' hardy anyone down there now ' what have our governments done to our once great country ' should be s#ot
This is solid gold!!

That's what it was like back then in Portsmouth, very different from London
Well it is a predominantly white country. Well, was. Haha
