    This video is for ENTERTAINMENT/INFORMATIONAL purposes only. I do NOT hate my car. In fact, I really like my car. This video is simply about things that aren't my favorite about my car. In addition, not ALL Celica's may have the issues that I discuss. Please just enjoy the video and stop the hate :)

    In a number system relative to these points given for an auto 2000:
    Comfort 9/10: Lacks that in which a sedan improves on
    Luxury: 4/10: Comfortable for a sporty roadster, not so much for a commuter though 25/37 mpg is nothing to sneeze at. Seats are memory foam and they start to harden over time, no great armrests except for your legs. Road noise gets inside the cabin whether you have the window down or not typically because the gaskets breakdown or are broken down after 20 years, and lacks the sound dampening that a luxury sedan or SUV would have.
    Suspension and ride 7/10: struts are stiff and road imperfections find their way into the cabin, ride is affected by stiff struts and also small tires that don't absorb impacts. But remember that the weight of the car is on one side of the car when turning, so it is engineered to reduce the body travel to prevent the tire from colliding.
    Transmission 8/10: Automatic for the GT is responsive but my 6-speed Impala for example has better dynamics when the computer shifts versus Toyota's. The Impala has faster shift time and response, a V6 moving 4000 lbs 5.9 seconds 0-60 and 14 seconds in a quarter automatically. In other words, the Celica lacks a responsive auto transmission, sporty but not the best in performance and economy. Although the auto GT runs the engine 2-2.5k rpm at 70 mph.
    Overall these points do not affect daily drivers much, a 20 year old car getting 37 highway mpg is godly. An affordable sporty roadster does not change the fact that it is not very luxurious, it was designed to be that way. A Ferrari interior is not very luxurious as a whole as many features exist to help the driver run 180 mph, not become the daily driver.

    I've had my Celica GT for over 7 years now. Still love the thing. Only problem is it's an automatic which I might be changing in the near future. No sunroof. No power windows. No luxury additions and I still love the thing. Handles on a rail. Oh and by the way it's a Toyota. So the resale value will go down. And then right back up. Fun little cars.

    I never seem to get the deal with having none plastic materials on a car.. it's not like you're gonna touch the car's dash all the time. It has leather on the arm rest where it matters and the steering wheel. That's all that's needed.

    I have the 2003 Toyota Celica and it is very similar but I will say Toyota stepped up its game , I can’t say anything about the clutch ... since I drive the automatic but because it’s an automatic I can glide along at 65 at around 2000RPM..... and I have great lumbar support in my car ! Although the complaint I have, since it is manual adjustments and I have long legs (albeit my height is 5’6) it’s never quite the perfect fit ..... the road noise is somewhat loud but not too shabby compared to my ‘06 Ford Focus ..... and I listen to my music LOUD anyways.... the shocks are great for it being a sporty car .... but because it’s a lower ride I try to avoid pot holes when I can.... the interior is the same so no improvement there but I think it’s better than my old ford ! Cheers ! Great video

    IIRC, gearing on the GTS / 2ZZGE + 6 Speed manual meets two criteria: only one upshift for to 0 - 100km/h / 60mph (first is a bit long) and when on the Lift (the "L" in "VVTi-L"), up changes at 8,300rpm keeps you in "Lift", great for track days (of course).
    I've just got all the tyres replaced on mine with Goodyear Eagle F1 (205/50R16) on the stock alloys and a wheel alignment, and its SOOO much quieter than the mix of worn F1 and Toyo T1-R, MUCH better steering feel and respsonse, and less likely to oversteer(!)
    The new clutch has been a complete bugger to manage, though, I'll agree the clutch pedal feedback is not definite.
    Don't bother with a 2ZZGE + auto - the 4 speed auto chokes the engine - you don't necessarily get the benefit of Lift on the up changes.
    Interior quality is similar to that of the Echo/Vitz of the same era, with a bit of luxury in the seats, door cards, steering wheel, manual gear stick boot, optional floor mats.
    Boot lid (or "Trunk" as you say in NA) gas struts not working? Replace them! It's not too hard, I was lucky and didn't need to heat the bolts on the lid end to soften the locktite on the threads.

    1: The bite point on mine is excellent, have your diskplate checked perhaps? Maybe that is your issue. I can climb an uphill without pressing the gas.
    2: Yea its mostly plastic, i find it ok because it cant break easily and it looks slick.
    3: I got a european version of your car which has 6 gears 143 HP. I usually do 3k RPM at around 130-140 km per hour speed. At 200 KM per hour speed i do about 5k RPM. The most i've seen is 240 KM per hour, i could probably push it to 250 or 260 but i havent had the chance to do it yet.
    4: On mine i hear nothing from outside, the sound isolation is perfect. Have your windows checked, because you might have a leak somewhere.
    5: I really dont know about this, i got after marker suspension with 7 ladders, which is pretty damn awesome, although they did cost 800 bucks lol.
    6: The seats are good, i would like to have more head support to be honest. I usually drive completely lying down in the sit almost as if im in a bed, that way i get great head support and back support.
    Overall i would say the toyota celica is a car way ahead of its time. Where i live gas is pretty expensive, and compared to any other car i have ever driven, the celica has the worst mileage. It drinks about 13 liters of petrol in 100 KM (in the city). Although it has excellent MPG in the highway.

      I dunno. I kinda agree with the clutch thing. I came from a Subaru Impreza with a heavy duty clutch and my Celica zr has a really om/off feel to it. I often just give it a few revs to make sure it doesn't stall. Although that's partly because I got an aluminium fly wheel. :)

  • @club1fan552
    @club1fan552 8 років тому

    I hear you about the low gearing and stiff suspension. I used to own a 1990 Mazda 323 Astina SP which would rev at the same level as yours on the freeway. The short gearing is designed to improve performance (which it does) so you can actually climb hills in 5th. The suspension on mine caused a constant jiggle on the freeway also. Really annoying. Sports cars like these are designed for driving fast and not for cruising. The result is I sold my dream car many years ago after only having it for 3 years...

  • @tikaimestulem

    Once I ownded Celica GT, I don't know where did you get yours, but mine was factory leather seats, 6 gear manual. Road noise? I don't know nothing about it, yes it was louder than other cars, but not that bad as you described. And yeah clutch its another story...

    Hi there! I just wanted to ask you a question about the stability of this car on the highway. How did you find highway driving? Nice and stable? Did it feel "planted" so to speak? • @UpshiftUnlimited
      @UpshiftUnlimited  8 років тому

      Highway driving is fine! As long as your tire alignment is good you'll be fine at high speeds. No lift or anything! My only complaint is that it has a high rev count (3500 at 70mph) when you're going fast, at least in the GT. Not sure how different it is in the GT-S.

    • @projman2155
      @projman2155 6 років тому

      I agree. I find it hard to believe that it revs at 3500 at 65mph. There's something definitely wrong if that's the case. Toyota's wouldn't make something that off against their reliability track record. High revs=shorter engine lifespan. Also, my experience with japanese cars is they don't use overdrives. Overdrives are usually for low powered entry level cars.

    an idk what you drive, but number one pb with the cluch is not about cluch it self is about your feet and your experience.
    Number 2 your right.
    Number 3, celica is with six gears and if you leave the butterfly on his place you cant hear the engin until 4200 rmp when hi is open(maybe you have no butterfly means cold air intake or something else in his place.
    Number 4. The dor have ajustament in years she is mouve or if had an accidend so it need to be readjusted for no wind nois on windows. For the road nois you need new tiers with new one nothing is hearing and for a + you can izolate your entier car all dorrface ground and the back plastic and on 65miles/h you will get sleep
    Number 5, you buy a sports care sure is stiff but the hachback on his left and right it have some lockers not to mouve are independent inside on the wing if theat are to used the hach mouve free so you need to replace theat
    Number 6, i dont know what to say i drive 1200km without going of and i dont feel nothing, maybe is from person to person or maybe you stay to down with the lower adjustament. trie to adjust your pozition highter.
    I am soo sorry bk argue you, btw sorry too for my english is not my first language but Celica is a great car and all what you speack about depends on who was drived befor of you and depends on how was driven bc if is take care of it she is a reable beautyfoul and cheep sports car.
    I drive a Celica every day and i love it and any owner of a celica will know to fixall theat if had a real pasion for it.
    Celica have a real one bad point, bad soft on european theat make an eror on catalitic convertor p0420 and can be fixed only with an update after 2003 theat is a real bad point when you drive all chill around and enjoy the ride the check come out with theat and is happend with corolla and avensis too and to get off of theat you need to make a bournoff procedure once on 20.000 km. Cheers.

    I have a question which of the Celica models had the oil burn problem does it depends on the model of the engine if it was made by Toyota or Yamaha or it has to do with the year off the production the 2002 model have that problem but 2004 models don't have it anymore
    thank you !!!

    • @UpshiftUnlimited

      Tomas hey! The Celica's that potentially can burn oil are 2000 to 2002 GTs. They fixed the issue for 2003 and none of the GTS's ever had the issue. I believe all of the engines in the Celica were made by Toyota.

    I have a 2004 Celica that I've had for almost 2 years now, and I love it. Unfortunately I live in a small area and the only Celica that was for sale at a reputable dealership was an automatic. It has some issues shifting going up hill, which is my only complaint. Of course I'll get it looked at soon though!
    Also, do you or anyone else know a good place to purchase after market stuff at a good price? I'm looking into the larger wing spoiler and side skirts mostly.

    • @UpshiftUnlimited
      @UpshiftUnlimited  8 років тому

      My automatic was the same way!! You can always put it into each individual gear when you go up hills too!
      And I would check out the TRD website, they are probably the most reputable and have lots of parts! Otherwise, check out Celica forums online and see what others have done to their car and where they got their items! Good luck!

    Ugh, I have A 98 Saturn with 100HP or less since it has nearly 200k miles on it and I'm looking for a newer car to get sometime next year. I was torn between a 06-08 Honda Accord V6 with the 6speed and a 07 Toyota Carmy V6 until UA-cam put a Toyota Celica GT-S video on the recommended list. I want power but this car is a whole lot cheaper if I can even find one in good condition lol
    Will I regret it if I decide to find a Celica?

    • @UpshiftUnlimited
      @UpshiftUnlimited  7 років тому

      You're not going to feel the increased HP in the V6 sedans. They're bigger and heavier; even though the Celica only has a 4 cylinder engine, it's incredibly light, so it feels much faster when you're accelerating. And the minimal sound insulation lets you hear the engine more. I'll always pick a 2 door over a 4 door. I'd bite the Celica if I were in your position.

    • @BruhHowDidIGetHere
      @BruhHowDidIGetHere 7 років тому

      Upshift Unlimited Yeah, I will probably consider it when ever I save up enough money. It's just 268 vs 180 HP that made it interesting for me. Thanks for the response! I subbed to see what you'll be doing to it, maybe it'll help with my decision lol

      Upshift Unlimited no, the gears are close and the rpm high for a reason. The power band of the 2zz-ge is pretty thin and to get the best from the vvtl-i it has to be over 6200 rpm. Under 6200 rpm it’s not much different from a 1zz-fe or 3zz-fe.

    Also hate the clutch, so soft. The brakes are the same too. Have the 6 speed gearbox, I didn't think they did a 5 speed on this, but must just be the US model. It's pretty quiet at 70mph. You complain about the road noise etc, you're forgetting it's designed to be light weight, they have to not use as much sound deadening. You also complain about the seats. Your seats don't look original, and you're sitting very upright. The original seats are very comfy, especially for long journeys.
