This must be the pinnacle of an opera singers art: to literally cry with perfect intonation and adherence to all the dynamics & articulations of the composers score. There have been many impressive singers in the past but very few who can stir the heart like GB.
Nice voice and singing, yet, doesn't quite do justice to the French style. Following the score it is visible and audible that he is not following the dynamics, in particular in the soft tones. pp becomes f and p is sung softer than pp.... the handling of soft notes can sometimes pose a problem with Melocchi style trained singers.
I think that is a specious generalization. I speak French fluently, and have loved this opera for forty-five years. I cut my teeth on the old Sills recording, and while Gedda was lovely in this role, his tone spread and became obnoxious the longer I have studied voice etc. " What did this sound like in the Opera House?" is the truer observation/question to be asked. I could ask for no more masculine/heterosexual sound that Hadley, begging God to release him from the torture of sexual seduction by Manon, as he seeks to save his soul. Sometimes, dynamics be damned!

I loved Jerry Hadley, I was heartbroken when he passed away. I heard him in this same opera years ago, in San Francisco
If they don't hear you it's YOUR problem! Bravo Maestro Hadley!
Lyric singing, so grand at his best... Bravo!
No one can hear the whisper of JDF... it is the problem of us all, not his indeed!

Magnífico Tenor Lírico.... Pena que la orquesta tapa al cantante y no permite apreciar la excelente voz de Hadley !!!!!!!!!!!!!........
I’m sorry I didn’t realize how good he was when he was alive. 😞
