  • Executed in Modena, Italy, in the prime year of Basquiat’s short and brilliant career, Untitled is an epic painting, its monumental size and visceral energy marking it as one of the artist’s seminal works.
Jean-Michel Basquiat’s explosive tour de force Untitled, 1982, led Christie’s Evening Sale of Post-War and Contemporary Art on 10 May 2016 in New York. It was estimated to realise in excess of $40 million and eventually sold for $57,285,000.
As well as having been chosen for the cover of the artist’s catalogue raisonné, Untitled has been included in every major Basquiat retrospective. It contains Basquiat’s heroic portrait of himself as a fiery black devil rising amidst an explosion of paint that has been thrown onto the canvas in the manner of Jackson Pollock.

Hands down my favorite Basquiat work. Everything about it from the dripping colors, the textures, the devil... it just jumps out of the canvas. Masterpiece

This is beautiful, but not the painting per se, but the narrators interpretation of his works. I think of a painting like "Dustheads"and I can only think that basquiat is laughing like a little kid in the grave, at all of these people having to fawn over his work, with such a title lmao! Basquiats usage of lines and contrasting colors is something that always intrigues Me as a writer. It is as if his concepts are so complex and intermingled, at all he could do is draw his madness onto a canvas. You can feel his pain vibrating off of many of his works. You can get a sense of his isolation and his vision of the world. I often think of his paintings with the Buddha in mind. How Siddhartha saw so much pain in the world, yet was sheltered in beauty for a great majority of his life. Basquiat would be the antithesis of Siddharthas existence. Yet they exist in perfect balance with eachother. A duality, if you will.
Please come see My slideshow of some of Basquiats works, it is set to music, and only 3 minutes long.
And thank you for posting this video. I love it.

I'm very jealous of this artist. I am into demonic art and this piece absolutely takes the cake. I'll never know what motivated him to accomplish this.
