- His first canvases were the walls and subway cars of New York City. But from that humble beginning, Jean-Michel Basquiat would change art, music and hip-hop culture. Dana Jacobson takes a look at how his influence is still being felt.

One of my favorite artists of all time. I am really happy that appreciation for his work has not diminished.
Either you can’t tell that it’s terrible or you enjoy the lie.
Idiot.
@@godwantsplastic all of it🌍🌎🌏🌎🌍🌎🌏
@@lindamon5101 Ellsworth Toohey would advocate for basquiat’s work.
Sadly I think it has a little - but he endures.
It shatters my Soul Jean Michel didn’t get to see his brilliant work fetching multi high millions.
I loved him so much. It makes me smile~like a real smile from inside, to see him getting the massive recognition he should have received in the 80’s.
Please Note*:Basquiat did study art…from the time he was a child…he studied | was actually gifted;I gifted school/private school/art programs and he did make art as a child as he grew up-he spent time in museums and studying, knew several of ‘the greats’ in fact and still referred to a study during much of his work as he was able to workin his own studio, so saying he didn’t have the chance to take art, is not entirely true~he did. If it is reference to formal secondary school or art school classes during his earlier days when he was running with Al Diaz performing SAMOc, maybe not but by then, he was already a *(early) developed artist.
His genius was incredibly underrated at the time-there were rumors he was a graffiti artist only and so on and it just was not true-he was exposed to some of the best art, knew fantastic artists, while he was growing up.
All the best.
His story is on Broadway now in New York at Mtc theater. The show will end by February 11/2023 in New York.
RIP one of the greatest creatives of all time
She bought his very first paintings… and put him in her video… she help a lot of people
Not y'all saying a white woman made Hip-Hop, BLACK culture, mainstream. Y'all will never stop tryna colonized. Y'all did it with Rock N Roll, Country, and etc. Now y'all tryna do it with this.
Fab5 Freddy…yoMTVraps…like it or not she was a major influence on popular trends back then. She helped make that genre mainstream, it doesn’t mean she invented it. Most people can’t tell if music is good or bad and they need to be told, there’s no attempt at colonization here they’re just trying to hide the fact that they need to be told like children.
I kinda agree, she made what seems like a parody of a rap song, I think everyone was aware of this, but times were different then, it was more of a tribute than a parody, and it gave Hop Hop a boost with white kids.
I need some Dr.Umar
They’re not insinuating any such thing. 🙄 Listen to the words they used..
“Exposed him to mainstream culture”
They’re just saying that Blondie was a very high profile band at the time and made a video that was available and accessible to everyone in America..like people in suburban American. Who would’ve not been able to be exposed to it otherwise. People who wouldn’t have sought out Hip Hop culture on their own. People who didn’t know about Hip-Hop as an art form; graffiti artists like Fab Five Freddy nor artists like Basquiat. They’re not saying she created it.
Shut up, goofy!
It clearly said she brought it to the mainstream.
On the bright side, you just won a gold medal in the Victim Olympics!
Congratulations….. I guess.
My favorite artist. Basquiat is amazing.
A few months ago, I started to play "Rapture" in my truck, over and over, as my "road trip" anthem. That's when I discovered Debby Harry's relationship with Basquiat, in a UA-cam documentary. I hadn't known about this.
Good thing you mentioned Ramellzee
Did they tho?
I saw his armor amazingly displayed but didnt hear his name
Didnt even give him credit on BEAT BOP.
SMH
Jean Michel Basquiat is Haitian and I am proud of my fellow countryman.
his mother is puerto rican tho. lol
And he’s Boricua🇵🇷/Puerto Rican🇵🇷as well
🇵🇷🇭🇹
Don't play race card.. When Picasso painting was discuss, never mention he's not Haitian🇭🇹 either😅
Not many people know that, 👊🇭🇹
Surprised they didn't mention the movie Julian Schnabel made about him.
Fly high dear Jean Michel!
Amazing! The traditional art established nearly killed him’ this is amazing.
27 club is real
Great job CBS NEWS! You guys really made this special! You've got a few monitors in your studio too! How do you populate all those at once? We have like 2 channels of Expressions for our 50 monitors in our studios here in Dallas. We have problems populating more than 2 monitors at once! I guess that's the difference between a small market station and the big times.
That court is amazing

They did Kevin dirty with that photo lmao
😂😭
Why are they having these people explain his history and his way of thinking👀
And so horribly at that

Blondie didn't do anything for hip hop
I’m like Blondie 🤦🏾♀️😒
Lol. Neither did u ah?
@@lindamon5101 i invented hiphop
Basquiat, movie by Julian Schnabel, with Jeffrey Wright and David Bowie as Andy Warhol. Schnabel put all his friends and family to work in it. Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, Courtney Love, Benicio del Toro...
RIP🌹🇵🇷🗽🇭🇹🇺🇸
Im not an addict, he was lucky he was from NYC i am the other side of the planet of NYC
How the FUXK she know what he was thinking??? These people are unbelievable
That’s what I’m saying
That white woman did not launch hip hop
That’s not what was said. Pay attention.
That "white woman" is Debbie Harry. She was, and is, an incredible artist who was at the center of the NY underground culture in the 70's. She was close friends with Basquiat and many other Black artists and the song "Rapture" was the first rap song to be no.1 on the charts. It has been cited as a huge influences by many hip-hop artist since then. Her song introduced hip-hop to mainstream audiences all over America. Without that song the history of hip-hop and rap would have been different. Maybe someone else would have come along in a different way and influenced it, but that didn't happen. Debbie and Blondie were the ones whether you like it or not.
@@mecredi73 lmao yes she was the original originator who formed the entire hiphop movement
@@AwakenedAvocadobullshit y'all never get tired of gentrifying black people's culture
His untitled work was clearly cut with something
weird how other generations talk about how we grew up lol

I don't and can't understand how the arts🎨✍🎭💕 works out and price

U nvr knew jmb- Madonna never lived him. He was my bud.
I think about skull every day.
I'm sorry but this is incredibly racist. Imagine "Picasso's influence over spaghetti" cause, ya know, Italians...
How much of these funds are going to his family, I wonder who is over his estate, willing to bet his family is probably struggling while someone that doesn't look like him is getting richer
Basquiat's sisters Lisane and Jeanine are the executors to his estate. They don't receive money from auctions unless a painting is being sold from his estate, but they profit off of licensing. His licensing is represented by Artestar, which is why you see his art being sold everywhere on merchandise.
@@samrindge8042 , thank u, that's good to know, because so many great artist have been robbed of their work, their image, their brand in general, totally taken advantage of because they were starving artist, literally, I never understood how strangers could become rich off the work of someone they never met, I feel that no matter who has the artist work, a portion should go to their estate because it's still their work
I hope there's other curators as well give me a call I'm available I'll do it for free of course you cover room and board 🤣🤣
her explaining it makes it worse lol
I don’t get art.
Some of that expensive art work looks very rudimentary, simple for a child.
To much money
The painting is wacky and ugly don’t know why you think it’s so cute 🤯
He’s inspirational but not anywhere near Picasso, imo
How so? What has Picasso inspired,, hip hop even has roots of basquiat
Please. Both are ICONS& MASTRRS OF THEIR OWN GAMES.
Your right HE'S BETTER 😂😂😭
Your jealousy because he's better than any of your artists
