  • The Excelsior Brigade Fife and Drum Corps marches through the union camp at the 2006 Hamlin Beach State Park Civil War reenactment. Old 1812 is a standard tune played by many ancient fife and drum corps and reenactors alike. This video, in it's original format, is a good example of the style of marching used by most ancient corps, and is an easier style with longer step than modern drum corps use.
    15 year update.
    1) the audio is soooo loud and cuts off before the end of the tune
    2) the street beat / cadence was written by the bass drummer in this video, Bob (Hugh) Frail. Bob was a great man, veteran and drummer for around 70 years (really, he played with Acton Ostling's Union Endicott Colonials as a youth), sadly passed away July 31, 2017.
    3) Johnny, in the mullet, is director of field music at an historic fort producing amazing results
    The band continues to make music, holding irregular rehearsals and attending events as possible, given the current climate of 2020/2021. We expect a return to a more normal calendar in 2022.

    • @mundanestuff
      @mundanestuff Рік тому +1

      The songs are very similar. Derivative tunes for sure. There's a bunch that are all based on each other, John Brown's Polka is a good example. Welcome here again debuted in 1734 in Young's Drummond Castle manuscript, and modified extensively over the years into 1812, Bayham Abbey, Duncan Davidson, Gentle Ann, and a pile of other melodies with slight variation of the rhythm and melody. In the fife and drum traditional music scene, 1812 and Welcome Here Again are tunes very similar in structure and melody, you wouldn't want to play them back to back, but they are played as distinct tunes. Page 5 of the Company of Fifers and Drummers book 1 has Welcome Here Again, fife part. Page 20 had the drum part for Roving Sailor matching the fife part. While 1812 is on pages 7 and 42. Played here as a "stop beat" where the snare drummer pause while the bass drum solos.

    Those are not bad ideas. We could use a fife and drum corps at Hamlin. I would be honored to march with y'all. I don't have a Federal uniform and the one my CO has is Fed Cav, but I doubt it fits me anymore. We also need members real badly. We have about 20 adults and 2 youth.

    They appear to be marching in time. It is very hard to change your steps with those drums banging at your leg. Also the snare you play is different than what we use.

    @Smitheeboy94 And you must also realize that the south did little documentation during the war and just as the uniforms they wore what they had and to many of the Irish the bagpipe was a soothing sound and was played in camp and field at times

    @silvrantsbob The North had bagpipes too and all Irish regiments as they had more Irish to draw from.
