Highlights as Waldemar Cierpinski wins Gold in the Men's Marathon during the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games.
After being left slightly behind the leading pack that had set an initial fiercely fast pace, Waldemar Cierpinski from East Germany was able to pass the leaders around the 36 kilometre mark.
Once Cierpinski passed the pack he kept his position and took his number 297 bib through the finish line to claim the gold medal.
As the East German had also won the marathon in the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, he equalled the feat of marathon legend Abebe Bikila who had won two Olympic gold medals in Rome 1960 and Tokyo 1964.

WOW, my dad finished 4th (Vladimir Kotov no.709). Thank you for posting this video, it's the first time i've seen him finish so clearly. Very proud!
Wow, It would be glorious be the son of the great runner.
So you should be, what a precious video for you!
Your dad should have won the bronze. Cierpinski was doped up on steroids. The whole East German team was. Stasi files proved it.
@@mysticalmargaret6105 ha ha ha here comes bla bla ..
@@Racist_mate Oh I just saw her UA-cam nickname
i think my dad ran 2 12 or maybe 2 13. he finished 27th so wat ever that time was... chris wardlaw
Wow that’s cool
He was 28th in 2:20
@@daviddunn3179 i was saying his PB was 2:12 or 2:13. thanks, were did you find that. can you find out his 1976 result?
@@chrisjones245 I googled it . He was 35th in 2:23 at the 76 Olympics . His PB is 2:11:55 , a great time , especially for back then .
@@daviddunn3179 he said the other day he will be very upset when a woman can beat his time in the 10,000m. but with all the advancements in tech and lifestyle im sure it will happen one day.
Running is a part of the passion expressed by Running
OmG... You're supposed to be a "genius"
Cierpinski was a dope user(he admitted) just as so many DDR sporters. Gerard Nijboer is the olympic winner! He finished second.
He NEVER admitted...
back then eop was not used. steroids would not benefit runner in long distances.
Just as Frank Shorter is the TRUE Olympic champion of the 1976 marathon. Cierpinski knows it too.
@@promarcelo He knows he was a doped up cheat in both the 1976 and 1980 Olympics. He's too much of a coward to admit it (he's refused all interview requests), but the Stasi files are there as proof that he was doped at both Olimpiads. It's his shame to bare. He knows very well that the whole world knows. He also knows that the true Olympic champion of the Montreal Olympics is Frank Shorter. And he knows who the TRUE 1980 Olympic champion is too! He's a fake. An impostor. A cheat.
@@minavamp2811 Yes they do. They decrease recovery. Without steroids a user told me he could work out hard once every other day. With steroids you can work out hard three times a day and feel like a bear.
God bless you Waldemar Cierpinski. You are a true hero and a two time Olympic Champion! Even now in 2020 you are an inspiration and always will be!
Koch, Göhr, Cierpinski, all a disgrace to sports and olympic character. Honecker was a criminal and murderer, nothing more. You should be ashamed.
dope user.put him off the result list
He was a cheater. There’s a lot of evidence he used steroids. He should be stripped of his medals.
I like the video and the music!!
Everybody was doped, so it was a fair competition! 😅
This must be the worst Olympic clip ever. Unless you knew Waldemar you would never guess who won...
Its from the Moscow80 movie "Sports -- you are the peace!" It was surprisingly anglophilic film and followed several british island athletes. Here the guys with green shirts are from Ireland
Very interesting music.
NICE TO WATCH IT
At 1:00 through 1:07 you can see Viren (223) -- later dropped out.

Lasse Viren started too.
What is the name of this music ????

Who was that fool running ahead of everyone else on the opening lap?
He thought he was in the 1500 whoops missed it by two days.
The only one that sux is Jimmy Carter! US should have been there!! We had Tony Sandoval/ Benji Durden/ and Kyle Hefner. All three were very ready to do some damage.
Only the athletes lose out when there is a boycott by either side. A completely pointless gesture
It was so wrong that politicians stole the dream's of many world's top athletes at 1980 and 1984 Olympics.
Thomas Holmes+ I know bro BOOO!!!!! JIMMY CARATER!!
Tony Sandoval was in prime shape and he would’ve had a great shot at earning a medal.
How much kilometer please?
42 km

Ferenc Szekeres,a Hungarian long distance runner.
was this the olympics were the united states did not compete because of an american boycott?
+Louise Muhozi Yes it was.
Cierpinski + steroids ?????? = gold???????
It was too bad because of Jimmy Carter boycotted the Olympic Games in 1980
it would have bee a better competition with the americans which might have won this marathon

Waldemar unser DDR Held!
He was a doped up cheat. He should be stripped of both Olympic medals.
Hands down the least-relavent Olympic marathon.

Thanks to Jimmy Carter!
Least relevant because 3 USA runners didn't take part - absolute nonsense.
How many USA runners have got medals since the days of Frank Shorter.
Maybe Salazar could have cheated his way to a medal.

@@desertman1962 And we won't talk about Rupp and the Brit he coached, will we?
A blood -doping cheater. Shorter was the true Gold Medalist here.
Wrong race. 1976 Montreal.
@@marknorris1381 I know.Frank Gold medaled in Munich according to the rules, honestly,in 1972. He silvered at Montreal. Cierpinski won Gold in '76 at Montreal and again in Moscow in 1980,both times dishonestly, blood doping.I merely wanted to make the point that Waldemar's 2 wins were tainted; he cheated and should not be extolled and heralded as a hero in any way, shape and form.Franks Shorter did it the right way, always did and I think the greatest overall distance runner ever in America, excelling from the two mile ,5k,10k to the marathon.
@@nidabatayan3047 Ah, okay. I catch on to what you are saying. Yes, a lot of questions remain about a lot of athletes, Cierpinski is one.
84 in Los Angels hätte er auch gewonnen, sch... Politiker.
high on juice, like all "DDR" athletes; Lopes would've eaten him, easy job !
Ich denke das würde es nicht passiert. Lopes aus Portugal war the Beste damals.
