When you watch how different the way swimmers swim today are so different. The swimmers today swim look so aerodynamic, as the saying goes, you can put a cup of water on their heads.
I was in Munich when Spitz won his medals. The whole Olympic village was totally shocked that one athlete could accomplish such an amazing feat. Seven golds. Seven world records. And then the unthinkable happened and shocked us again, but in a totally different way
was your pop ian ?............I was 14 yrs old then but remember the name............same with bruce rogers at flst........74 to 76..........nat qualifier in 100 back and 100 fly.........be well
From Wikipedia: "Spitz was originally reluctant to swim the 100-meter freestyle, fearing that he would not win the gold medal. Minutes before the race, he confessed on the pool deck to ABC's Donna de Varona, 'I know I say I don't want to swim before every event, but this time I'm serious. If I swim six and win six, I'll be a hero. If I swim seven and win six, I'll be a failure.' Spitz won by half a stroke in a world-record time of 51.22 seconds."
@FJLocHDwe'd like to think people were stupid in the past but i think they tried to enter the water as flat as possible probably because the were not allowed underwater dolphin kicks
I was glued to the Olympics in 1972. I used to dream of sleeping next to Mark Spitz - with his body and arms around me. That’s it -- just sleeping -- arms around me -- nothing else. What ? You don’t believe me ? You think that I am not saying what I really wish would happen ? Well that’s it ! Hugging - Snuggling. If something else would have happened -- well -- that was not on my agenda and I should not be held responsible. 😇
Someone told me Spitz was suffering from nerves and looking to scratch from the 100m free final, he was told by (I think it was the coach Doc Councilman) "go ahead but if you do, no one will remember you!"
True story after the Olympics Mark was dining at the Marina Del Rey City Club which was part of the Marina Towers. We had the pleasure of eating there and on one evening Mark was there eating and he had just done a milk commercial and when I saw him, he was drinking wine and I was just a little kid and before my mom could grab me I ran over to him and scolded him for not drinking milk.
If Mark Spitz could of earned money like M Phelps does today I believe he would of had as many gold medals as Phelps. Back then they had to be amateurs who earned no money. He quit swimming after 1972 so he could make money from his success. If you look at his races he won them all convincingly so I think he would of had as long of a run as Micheal..
I have vague memories of watching this in a hotel room not sure how thats possible seens how i wasnt born until 86 just watching this to see if i get any other flashbacks
While it might have taken 36 years for another athlete (Michael Phelps) to top Mark Spitz' All Time Record of most Golds in a single Olympics, I think it will be more than a half century from now before Phelps' All Time Record is topped.
+TheColinChapman Stupid comment.. If you know a bit in swimming, you will see how much this sport has grown the last couple of years... I mean, look at the technics they were using, and look at the technics they have right now ?
You have to remember that the water used in the pools now is different to what that used back then. The density of the water back then was so much higher, thus more difficult to manoeuvre through.
+bp w probably correct, even if it sounds ridiculous. but as far as I know, back in these days the water temperature was 60F, now it is 70F. that makes approx. two percent in density.

If it wasn't for those points, this looks like it could have happened today! The digital clocks look ahead of the time, it's hard to believe it's 40 years ago... though the moustache helps! It's funny, as I guess sports competitors thought less about what would streamline them in their sport and were still happy to follow the hair/facial hair fashions of the time.
Spitz is better than Phelps; better looking too. They had to get Spitz out of Germany in 1972 quickly because of what happened to the Israeli athletes (Spitz is Jewish).
Henry J not necessarily, they would be disqualified then. it's really not that hard to get this much mass, it's not like they look like body builders ffs. all you need is the right kind of diet and some weight exercises in addition to swimming
SkylarPro clearly you know nothing about steroids, you dont take them then suddenly look like a bodybuilder. They can also be used for strength and endurance reasons not mass building.
I agree, he does not have the physical features of any Native American tribal group that I am familiar with. In fact, he looks Caucasian, so most likely of European descend. Very good observational skills Rectiony.
no ! Mark Spitz is the first and only , Michael looks more like Mark . Mark came before Michael . spitz won 7 gold and retired at just 22 yrs more achieving than Michael . Michael just has more medals and gold because he is greedy . Mark Spitz isnt greedy and doesnt need any more medals
Because of the ideological differences obviously. North wants the united Korea to be under their regime while South wants the united country to be under theirs. Seriously how old are you? You don't seem very bright.
That is irrelevant to our conversation, and also incorrect. USA is North Korea's sworn enemy. North Korea's goal is the same as South Korea's, a peaceful reunification. The only country standing in the way is USA, that is why North Korea acts are so hostile about developing nuclear weapons.
Mustache, big hair, no cap, no goggles. Legend.
For me the greatest ever! 7 golds, 7 world records ! Truly amazing!
yyyyeeessss !!!
When you watch how different the way swimmers swim today are so different. The swimmers today swim look so aerodynamic, as the saying goes, you can put a cup of water on their heads.
Mark Spitz exemplifies the true spirit of the Olympics. He will live on forever in Olympic history!
yes ...he's the best ever
I was in Munich when Spitz won his medals. The whole Olympic village was totally shocked that one athlete could accomplish
such an amazing feat. Seven golds. Seven world records. And then the unthinkable happened and shocked us again, but
in a totally different way
Really
My dad swam in those Olympicss against Mark Spitz ... As he would say, "It was a close race when the gun went off!" 😂
was your pop ian ?............I was 14 yrs old then but remember the name............same with bruce rogers at flst........74 to 76..........nat qualifier in 100 back and 100 fly.........be well
M Hartung - Yes, Ian Mackenzie is my dad!!! :)
Did your father swim in Mexico 1968 too?
I see it now ....it was Don Mc Kenzie in Mexico 68. My best wishes
Spitz > Phelps
@@erikamackenzie2408 Tell him I said hi from Montreal please!

The greatest sporting achievement - bar none.
you have to be one hell of an athlete to be a competitive swimmer, and to become a champion, you're in the elite class.
Wow those starts back then look almost like bellyflops today.
exactly 😂
lol
They are bellyflops and they hurt so much. 😂😂
Thats cause they thought it was slower to stay underwater
@FJLocHDwe'd like to think people were stupid in the past but i think they tried to enter the water as flat as possible probably because the were not allowed underwater dolphin kicks
Mark Spitz was the Michael Phelps of his time,
or you can call Michael Phelps the new Mark Spitz.
He did it with full hair and mustache and all.
No caps or goggles either!
I was glued to the Olympics in 1972. I used to dream of sleeping next to Mark Spitz - with his body and arms around me. That’s it -- just sleeping -- arms around me -- nothing else. What ?
he was my hero and motivation to start swimming. Many thanks mr. spitz.
💢💢💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥 agree, the best ever
Someone told me Spitz was suffering from nerves and looking to scratch from the 100m free final, he was told by (I think it was the coach Doc Councilman) "go ahead but if you do, no one will remember you!"
He was so gorgeous!
He looks a lot like Freddie Mercury, minus the teeth of course!:)
+Diem Nguyen ya think? Both gorgeous men but Freddie was so exotic looking.
+Elaine Snow True. :)
+Diem Nguyen no one can sing like Freddie. NO ONE. I miss him so much!
+Elaine Snow So do I, as you can tell by my user profile picture.
When I saw Spitz break all those records I thought no other men's swimmer will ever achieve that amount of Olympic success, boy was I wrong.
He was very very handsome, nice well proportioned body, great tan, chiselled dark features. He looks like a Greek marble statue
a true legend!
Idk, there's something about watching Mark Spitz swim. He was fierce in the water. Competitive yes, but fierce, "SHARK Fierce".
I am from Brazil ,Spitz the best
True story after the Olympics Mark was dining at the Marina Del Rey City Club which was part of the Marina Towers. Every time they started a race that must hurt! 😂😂😂
And Mark Spitz a true legend to Olympic Swimming. The original multi gold medalist. 🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Well I'm truly appreciative of seeing this, but why the music? Would love to just hear the race atmosphere.
agree...its so annoying
full moustache, thick hair, no cap. what a champ
Someone that dominate would be a great swimmer today with all the technical advantages and training that they do today.
He was so fine!
Yes...seeing him now! Like Joe Namath.
If those hunks can age like that, what hope does anyone have.
Sad.
Just remember, Spitz had his mustache and hair which causes drag, if he wore a cap, he would have been much faster
Just remember, Spitz proved to be the strongest
And look at the way they jumped into the water, WITHOUT holding on to the block
and NO under-waters! Just splat and swim.
El mejor de todos !!!...( sin todas esas mallas de ahora, para deslizarse mejor en el agua ) , con un físico, digamos "normal ", no "deforme", como se ven en estos tiempos...

What a 70’s pool and atmosphere! I bet people (and the swimmers) were smoking in this facility. I’d like to be there in person!
Mark Spitz... para muchos un ídolo!!! NEVER TOO LATE
He's so cute
If Mark Spitz could of earned money like M Phelps does today I believe he would of had as many gold medals as Phelps. Back then they had to be amateurs who earned no money. Absolutely. Nearly everything is different now.
Don Schollander, Shane Gould, Mark Spitz !, Roland Matthes ........ ❤ fantastic ❤ 🏊♂️ ❤
I have vague memories of watching this in a hotel room not sure how thats possible seens how i wasnt born until 86 just watching this to see if i get any other flashbacks
Every time they start, I just imagine the pain of doing a start like that
Ugh. It reminds me of when I started and would forget to dive down... painful!
While it might have taken 36 years for another athlete (Michael Phelps) to top Mark Spitz' All Time Record of most Golds in a single Olympics, I think it will be more than a half century from now before Phelps' All Time Record is topped.
200m butterfly spitz - 2:00.70 phelps - 1:51.51
correct. ten seconds that have been bought in the pharmacy....
+TheColinChapman Stupid comment.. If you know a bit in swimming, you will see how much this sport has grown the last couple of years... I mean, look at the technics they were using, and look at the technics they have right now ?
+ptitbaronnet if it makes You feel better, make that five instead of ten. but still illegal.
Thats how records get broken, techniques get smoother
Wow, that is crazy!
Mark Spitz and Doc Counsilman, two of Indiana University’s finest.
hELL THEY USED TO SWIM WITHOUT GOOGLES
I didn't realize that until you mentioned it.🤣.
And no caps, plus Spitz rocked a full, wavy crop of hair AND a mustache. When’s the last time you saw a swimmer with facial hair?
Yeah with underarm hair, unshaved body too
the dive all looks strange back then. Nowadays, they all dive deep.
I'd like to see today's swimmers try the same thing without the shaving and caps and tech.
I totally agree...Spitz, the best ever
What's funny is that the women's world record today is pretty much equal to or in some cases better than some of those winning times by Spitz.
multi io well the women these days have goggles and technical suits which reduce drag underwater

The competitions are not shown full length but cut into shorter bits
that's what they said about spits in 72
It's the lane he's in. If you look beside his name on the right, you see a red arrow next to it, to indicate the winner.
Word the best
Spitz is better than Phelps; better looking too. They had to get Spitz out of Germany in 1972 quickly because of what happened to the Israeli athletes (Spitz is Jewish).
Oh really! Interesting.
good afternoon, can i use this video in a live for educational purposes?
배치기 장난 아니구만~ 물안경없이 대단하네
well techniques are being improved everyday. 30 years from now people will laugh at Michael Phelps's techniques.
moreover Phelps didn't won 8...only 7...the 8th. was a gift of the twisted jury
Back when they didn't wear caps and goggles
sen en iyisisin mark
Wow! Reminds me of when I was 13! The only time I was really in love! Where are you Diane Harris? Lol
best one at 1:56
Does ANYONE know this song?? I'm currently obsessed with it.
champ champ champ
7ING👑
Wow, no swim caps then. It looks strange.
So apparently in the 70s nobody knew about dynamic fluid force and friction
...correct
It's his lane #4
Now phelps is the most record of gold medals ;)
yeah so .... Spitz is the first and most celebrated . without Spitz Phelps now is nothing .
*Mark Spitz*
Best suits ever. USA!!
Im confused why are there 3 Americans in the finals? Its only top 2 from trials go
Hmm..nowadays, all competitors are heavily muscled unlike these swimmers.
+AuroraS 92 heavily? Not really.
+Henry J not heavily, but comparing to those they have a lot more build and substance to them
SkylarPro steroids
Henry J not necessarily, they would be disqualified then. it's really not that hard to get this much mass, it's not like they look like body builders ffs. all you need is the right kind of diet and some weight exercises in addition to swimming

A retro dive
why do they always show 4th place?
Это ещё 50м и 4х100 вольники не плавали!
If he could have swum two more olympics think his times would have dropped two more seconds..
🥺
i thought exactly the same...so funny
speedo and a mustache = """ahhhh, the good ole days"""
No goggles either...
No caps
He was a fox! Still is!
Woww, he even looked like Michael!
He looks like Freddie Mercury too!:)
DemonOfTheWest88 michael is ambitious
In the first race 6 of the 8 swimmer dive very bad, I mean, the just fall in the water, bellyflops
They had touch pads then?
Am i wrong or all they all belly flopping? Hahah^^
Because of the ideological differences obviously. North wants the united Korea to be under their regime while South wants the united country to be under theirs. Seriously how old are you? You don't seem very bright.
On s"est posé des questions sur les allemands de l'est en 1976
mais pas sur les américains en 1972.
Cela aurai dû être l'inverse.
without the suits.. lol
Almost embarrassing to look at compared to the best swimmers of today.
I have nothing against Koreans, why?
That is irrelevant to our conversation, and also incorrect. USA is North Korea's sworn enemy. North Korea's goal is the same as South Korea's, a peaceful reunification. The only country standing in the way is USA, that is why North Korea acts are so hostile about developing nuclear weapons.
Phelps vs spitz have chance 1/100 with drugs
