  • Chrome OS is Google's free and open source operating system that runs on Chromebooks. It is based on Linux and provides a thin, fast and efficient OS for running Google's Chrome web browser. It can also run Android apps, as well as Linux apps.
    Here is an overview of the power of Chrome OS.

    I never thought I'd buy a ChromeOS machine before (though I liked the concept).
    But now that their machines have Android support, tablet convertible options, touch screens, pen input, and soon (or now?), Linux app support, I REALLY want one now!

    I'm a freshman in High School and I needed a laptop for school this year. I already owned a Mid 2013 11.6' MacBook Air but sadly the battery has been significantly worn down (Hand me down). Fortunately, my brother no longer needed his 2 year old Acer C730 Chromebook. I've been using it since my first day of school and it's been perfect! My school is based on Google Products and more than half of what we do is online, everyone is required to bring their own device and Chromebooks are preferred. Although my Chromebook is quite old and hasn't been well taken care of, it still holds up well. It does everything that I need it to for school. I'm interested in Web Development and I think you can do basic web dev on a Chromebook but I'm also interested in Android development and I don't think you can run Java or Kotlin on a Chromebook! Hopefully this will be possible soon. However, I can do my school work, watch UA-cam/or Netflix, play basic games if the lesson is boring (don't tell!) And basically nearly everything... !
    I'm looking to build a custom PC next year (running Linux) and maybe a new Chromebook, too.
    Thank you for the video! I feel like Chrome OS has come a long way. I used to DESPISE it because of it's limitations but we're finally seeing progress :)

    Gary, there is one major advantage for Chrome OS versus a traditional Linux distro is that you buy a Chromebook with ChromeOS already installed. So you get a Linux distro without the hassle of installing it (while not particularly difficult is a stretch for most). I am intrigued to see what Linux apps a Chromebook can run as that might one an excellent secondary computer for me.

    Last summer my school was getting new Chromebooks, so they sold the C710 models for $25, and the C720 models for $35 (Limited 2 per family in the school district). I got the C720 model, has worked since the day I got it back in July. It is very nice for schoolwork and youtube, and is very portable and fast. I use Windows 7 for video editing and games and things that can't be used on a Chromebook.

    Chrome OS has evolved quite a lot since initial release. During initial release it was totally useless for my workflow, but I hope it has changed enough to make me consider it as an alternative. Once I've watched your upcoming videos, I hope I can make a decision whether it could be useful for me or not.
    I'm mainly on Windows, but if Linux app support is impressive enough, I could imagine myself running on Chrome OS only.

    • @TienHuynh5312
      @TienHuynh5312 6 років тому

      Toni Fasth if linux is the primary factor. why you even choose chromeOS? Windows 10 has supported the linux subsystem, you can do command lines mostly.

    • @tonifasth
      @tonifasth 6 років тому +3

      T H because Chrome OS is much closer to Linux than Windows and because it has been possible to chroot into a full Linux distribution on Android for years, I was hoping that Crome OS would add proper native support for this.
      Should be fairly easy to accomplish, since the Linux kernel is there already.
      While Windows Subsystem for Linux can be extremely useful, it's still very limited and will most likely never reach a state where you can mix and match the best of both worlds seamlessly.
      Currently I prefer Windows for tasks where Windows is as its strongest and Linux for tasks where Linux is at its strongest.

    • @galenblack6921

    I bought a Samsung Chrome book Plus last year and traded it for $300 and a brand new iPhone 7, which I promptly sold for $600. I bought a Samsung Chromebook Pro a few months ago and it rocks. I won't go back when it comes to laptops. I do have a $3,000 Windows 10 Pro desktop, but that is for gaming, music writing and such things that the Chromebook doesn't do nearly as well. I love having the most secure laptop in the world. Next up will be the Google Pixel so I can download all of my Google Play movies and books to the hard drive.

    You mentioned the various remote terminal programs. What I want to see is an interface like the Wifi interface that quickly and easily creates a virtual terminal in a tab, or for a system admin, open up a window full of server terminals. Should be simple and smart on the surface with the ability to drill down to navigate through corporate security while remembering the details in a secure way for future connections. The functionality is there, just too much hassle at times when in a hurry.
    Almost no one spends time on a computer without an Internet connection. There is no reason that a Chromebook cannot be a smart "dumb terminal" for any computer, real or virtual, anywhere in the world with no more trouble to connect than a Wifi connection.

  • @peterm.eggers520
    @peterm.eggers520 5 років тому +2

    Though it can be done, connecting to work computers and servers, cloud services, home servers, etc. is still equivalent to dial-up from decades ago. As dial-up was dying out, software to automate the process was just coming into its own. Though connecting to other computers (virtual or real) can be more complex than WiFi (especially well secured computers and networks), once done/scripted, it should become a menu list item like WiFi. Of course, the security to gain access to the Chromebook should match the most secure computer's or system's that is being accessed (opportunity for a new security standard enforcement). But, the bottomline needs to be that once setup, all of the computer systems throughout the world that I have access to should be on a WiFi-like menu that allows me to open up a connection in a tab, or a group of connections in a window of tabs with just a click.

    Just a quick note: Chrome OS is not open source, it contains closed sourced components and is only available pre-installed on chrome devices. Chromium OS is the free and open source version available for anything you can build it for. Chromium doesn't include things like Android App support and the google assistant.

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  6 років тому

      Just a quick note: I know that. Technically you can say the same thing about Android, but everyone calls Android open source software. The difference is that the open source version of Android is still called Android, but the open source version of Chrome OS, isn't. I guess if it was called the Chrome OS Open Source Project (COSOSP) then it would be fine.

    1-its based on gentoo, a very strange linux distribuition but simplified to users. From what i know, it mades the system more integrated with the device, making it run faster.
    2-there are open source copies of the system, if you care about privacy
    3-2021 promisses better integration with windows apps and debian apps
    4-FydeOS version can now run gta san andreas mobile without overclocks in raspberry 4 (a "weak and cheap" aweasome pc).
    5-it has a user friendly interface, i imagine even elders and kids could find their way

    I love my Chromebook but new buyers beware - Chromebooks rely on the internet, yet you may have interent connection problems! Mine regularly stopped connecting to the internet even though it was showing a strong signal, and it took me hours of googling to identify the problem and sort it out. It turned out that mine couldn't cope with my router. It seems that routers are now dual band or channel or whatever, and switch between them to maintain the best signal. The Chromebook couldn't cope with it and constantly stopped accessing websites. I had to play around with my router settings to fix the problem. And I know it wasn't just my Chromebook or router, because someone I know has had exactly the same issue.

    I love how so many people are saying things like "Yeah, I know I can't do much with this anyway, and that I have to throw away all my other programs that I have used (and probably paid for), but hey, the other Google services are okay, I guess, so I'll just use those instead. I need to make some compromises to make this work, but, well, I mean, I wanna use it so, yeah, I'll do it." like sheep who don't know they're being herded into an enclosure.
    Literally everything they 'allow' you to do with this "ChromeOS" you can already do with Windows, Linux and/or Apple. Want to run android apps? Get BlueStacks - and now you don't have to stop using any of your apps that you already have. You don't need to stop playing your favorite games. You don't need to stop using your favorite apps that aren't available on ChromeOS or Android. No need to compromise.

    windows works straight out of the box too. It's pretty pointless saying it just works when all you're doing is surfing the web via a browser. If that's the case. Windows "just works" as well.
    I like the concept of Chrome OS & do use Linux as a second platform, but there's no way I could make the change to it full time

    • @GF-un1wx
      @GF-un1wx 3 роки тому

      @Einstein Wallah - no it does not mean that. It happened to my HP Chromebook! It's been 9 months & the hacker penetrated my Chromebook as I was trying to connect the HP printer I bought to accompany it. The attacker accessed my wifi & infiltrated not only my Chromebook, but also my Dell laptop, 3 android phones, and 3 notebook devices. Put my Chromebook in an "Enterprise" arrangement & took total control! Nothing I have done gets rid of all the "rogue" apps the attacker has installed on all my devices - not Powerwash, Factory Rest, VPN... nothing, I even subscribed to Norton 360 & within 2 days, the attacker had infiltrated their programs & they are useless. He uses GitHub to clone apps and cause total chaos!

    I lost it on windows when they introduce win 10 S as you cant install 3rd party app and if you disable it slows your pc/laptop, and you have to pay to get win 10s and also Microsoft office while you can get alternate google docs for free!

    • @hanro50
      @hanro50 6 років тому

      Yes and no.
      You could technically install a third-party OS like another Linux distro, but unlike Android it doesn't have to be device specific as far as I know...
      They're also essentially adding in the functionality modding and hacking would bring natively in the future...

      I'm using an older Toshiba Chromebook 2 (2015) with play store support right now. I even upgraded the 16GB factory onboard storage to 128GB and it's so nice ever since. Just look for something with 4GB of ram, 2GB models were so sluggish for power users. Also make sure it has Google play store support or don't buy it.

    Chrome OS is excellent. It's very fast and efficient. BUT, you need to go into it with your eyes open. When you use a Chromebook you are always being watched. Google sees everything you do, reads your e-mails, and tracks your searches. Also, after a maximum of 6 1/2 years, Google will no longer support your device, no matter how much you paid for it. They don't bother telling you that when you buy it. I had to learn that the hard way! Other than that, Chromebooks do a fine job, and I highly recommend them.

      Depending upon how much time you spend using "Pro" apps versus everything else that people usually do with a PC, it may be far more efficient just to leave your Windows machine parked in the corner. Then, dust it off, boot it up, come back 30 minutes later after all of the updates are installed, and use your "Pro" apps as needed. That's what I did anyway. And it worked for me. Eventually, I realized that my employer provided all of the "Pro" apps that I needed and that really I didn't need to actually own a Windows machine for the things that I did away from work.

    There are Android versions of FPS games (PUBG, Fortnite) and others, can you play it on ChromeOS and use typical WASD and Mouse to control? The recent Google Pixel Slate is a tablet, so I am sure you can resort to the touchscreen method like other Android phones. I'm not entirely sure how Google Play Store apps were used back when Chromebooks don't have touchscreens, though.
