I have heard a story about the gliders the U.S. Army bought during the war. When they let the contracts for the gliders they started to look for a company to build them, the problem being that anyone with experience building aircraft was ALREADY doing so, so there was capability left! The Army Air Cops thought for a while realized that did no NEED an aircraft manufacturer and that there for specific skills that they needed to mkae the gliders; like welding steel tubing, making a light structure, wood forming, etc. . They then hunted to find manufacturers with space to fulfill those capabilities, two of the first they found were CASKET MAKER AND A COMPANY MAKING REFRIGERATORS!!! (neither of these things is particularity well know for its flight ability!)
My grandfather and great uncle bought two of those Waco gliders after the war as surplus. The aircraft came in three large crates each. They parted the aircraft out and disassemble the oak crates to build their homes in Nazareth PA. I have pictures of my grandfather pulling the gliders out of the crates. And yes, I’d love to see a supersized version.
This bird DESERVES to be built and used as a flying weather station and stuffed with altimeters, barometers and other sensors seeing as how stable it is.
Glad to hear the free plans aren't going away. I'm in Canada and as much as I desire to buy kits, the shipping, taxes and duty to get them here are stupid. Three years into the hobby, the planes I fly most are hand-cut, FT planes running on FT power packs. In terms of the plans, I had an idea while flying the other day. Add a donate button. Or several at different rates. If I donated 5 bucks for every plan I've downloaded, it would be 100 bucks or so I'd be glad to donate. Rather give it to you than a shipping/brokerage company or my government as taxes. While I appreciate the free plans, time is money and your team spends a ton of time on these models. A donate button would make it easy for us to give back. Worth considering. You've paved the way for me to successfully fly large, fast, expensive planes. Would have been a longer, more painful process without your help. Hard to put a price on that but with a donate button, I could try...
this aircraft/glider would be a great platform for SearchandRescue ! With two operators; one to pilot and another to watch downward facing cameras. It would also be great to do the same thing at Flight Fest, just fly it above the rest and film the cloud of planes below.
Love these new planes. I am fortunate to live just over the hill from where the Whiskey 7 C47 lives currently. Recently they started back to giving aerial tours in it and I have seen it flying several times these last few weeks. I cant wait for the new episode where you do some old school FT magic with some history, some building and some flying. A lot of us REALLY miss that style video over the screamy anime gurl new hotness. I also came across a nice piece of aviation history and posted a suggestion for a new build with some history NOT in the super popular air craft types for those wanting some diversity. Could be interesting to see what you can do with that after this next video maybe.
Hey flite test, just gotta say how happy my 8 year old son and I are to have found your channel. We are going to start learning to fly soon. We had a couple plane ideas for you to try. XF5U/V-173- shouldn’t be hard, but a really neat plane from just before the jet age Piaggio P.7- this is a challenge, flying boat that sat very low in the water, but utilized hydrofoils to help lift the body out of the water, then the pilot works a clutch system to move power from its water propeller to the air propeller. Would be really cool to see how well it would have flown as well as take off and land. Grumman J2F duck, a neat float biplane uses for recon and search and rescue. Can’t wait to build some planes.
I can see people having fun with the Waco... It would be cool to have it as a recreation of D-Day, but also a cargo version where you can drive RC cars out of it or other cargo in it. It would be cool to air drop some flower bags out of it.
Looks like you've got a torque issue with your popup power system. Being that the motor is directly over the center of pressure and offset from the body there's not enough tailplane to counteract the torque and the plane is rotating around the wings. Moving the motor forward or back even a few inches should reduce the effect but I think this is what Josh is talking about at 11:24
1:45 might be a lot easier to have a wooden rod or roof lath to divide the pressure for glueing the wing. 2 or 4 hands are the same like single fingers just small spot that will glue well while the rest will have a thicker glue line. And that will change the line of the wing, the profile will be different depending on the pressure spots. A lath makes it also easier if you work alone. I wondered why I had never seen such lath in use to divide the pressure a lot more better and similiar.
I believe I saw a dual powered version of this same Waco (Like the XPG Series of Waco prototypes) at Oshkosh this year. I would LOVE to see a kit of that!
For the fly by snatch launch ... You’ll need length of surgical tubing in the line used to pick up the glider. That will absorb the shock so the glider will smoothly accelerate. The right length of surgical tubing will smoothly recoil so the glider does not get whipped or catapulted off the line. Finding the right length of surgical tubing will be the trick.
Absolutely love your channel guys! It's got me back into building planes again after so many years. Can I make a request that you build a Horten HO 229 please???
Oh sweet! The other day saw a video about this technique. Was wondering if you guys would revisit these gliders in another video. Love it. It has to be really fun but also challenging
I would love to see a supersize kit of the Waco Glider. Would have a lot of versatility as a large airplane. Could mount motors on the pod, on those nose or on the wings like the Germans did with their supersized cargo glider (to lazy to look up the model # for it). Also a lot of versatility for carrying or dropping cargo, paratroopers, etc. I love flying large gliders with telemetry glider and Vario installed. Brian
Guys, you overlooked a version of the Waco CG-4A called the PG-1, PG-2 and the GP-3. All of those are twin powered versions of the CG-4A. I am planning on building the PG-2 because it’s directly based on the CG-4, which I like the lines the best and the motors are mounted on the wings, not the struts. The PG-3 has a new nose that made it more streamlined and raising the cruise speed from 100 mph to 117. I hope to use your twin power pack “C” on a 8’ version to get scales performance. Also, if you make is as a monster kit, I would order one of those.
Just as a Slight thought, Would your C47 have to weight a lot more than your Glider and even be much Stronger? Do to the Violent Pull on the plane and Could Encourage a Noes dive, I'm still learning this field myself so please forgive me if my info is completely wrong, it's just a guess to me Great Content and i will most certainly be looking forward to what comes next
i just had the idea that an International Space Station shaped plane where the solarpanels are wings could work using the central cross shape of the station for weight shifting to roll
Next Idea of Messerschmitt Me321 glider or 323 Cargo Plane. Actually the 321 with the 5 engine HE111Z towplane would be cool. Or the rocket launch version of the Me321.
Thank you Josh now this is Flite Test. This is why I have been following you for years

The motor that flips up reminds me of the fold up plane that you did with the golf cart caddy😀
Yesssss we want a bigger Glider
Ah I see so that's why you were testing the snag line. Very clever
That is such a cool looking plane and it looked so stable in the air.
Understanding that ads pay for the ability to add content, I like the ad. I’ve seen many Dr. Squatch ads, and this is by far the best.
Yeah, I'll just skip through a generic ad, but if it's funny or creative I'll watch and maybe even buy something once in a while.
Fantastic, but you need to build a BIG Airspeed Horsa assault glider too :)
That or a Hamilcar. And the Hamilcar Mk.X had two radials for self propulsion.

Can you link them? I'm a colorizer, maybe I can colorize them
You guys should make a B-17 that drops bombs. You could also try landing gear retracts on it.
Think you will be very happy in September!
JB

But birds are aren't real. They're just drones. Made by the government.
@@EyeKnowRaff thank you! someone who knows
It’s a lifting body attached to a wing. What a killer design and a fabulous piece of history.
Can we get a giant spruce goose in foam please? She’s the mother of all troop planes
Would love that
That is a brilliant idea. It was a BIG beauty!
I saw the spruce goose IRL and went in it. it was beautiful
If they do make it the fist flight should be off of water instead of adding landing gear
@@dylandorn5912 yes indeed.

Same for me here. Writing from British Columbia and I love all the planes and plans. Keep them coming!

0:38 do I maybe see a new ft 3D plane…?! And I would love to see the big Waco!
Awesome big glider. I look forward to seeing more of these in the air together.
this aircraft/glider would be a great platform for SearchandRescue ! With two operators; one to pilot and another to watch downward facing cameras. It would also be great to do the same thing at Flight Fest, just fly it above the rest and film the cloud of planes below.
So amazing! I would love to see a giant Waco available! That would be really cool! Y’all are amazing!

You guys should build a micro hydroelectric Dam in that little creek
Please make a Monster Series F4 Phantom RC sometime soon!
There are a few sets of plans on the ft forms. If you want me to link it I will
@@voyhager3 I mean, I’d love to see a VIDEO about it, but sure why not
One amazing model is from Julius perdana
Is an amazing designer
He has a UA-cam channel,he post all the tutorial videos
Super-sized kit for the waco and the 47 would be cool. I think a super size kit for cabby would be cool as well
The tow rope for snatching the glider would need to have a lot of stretch.
Find some Para cord and gut it. The outside will have the strength and flex needed.
Nice motor design. Using your heads! Love it.

Have you ever tried banner towing? Might be a good way to get the hang of the snatch launching for the glider.
Absolutely fantastic, she could fly for days 👍🏻
please make a BF109. its my fav plane, it would be awesome

You can probably do some sort of glider tow with a drone, that might be a useful technique to develop
On behalf of the Barringer family, we all say excellent job on the Waco!
One of the best glider builds I've seen , great job !

Always awesome in what y'all dream up. This Old Man from North Carolina loves your videos. Waiting for the next one. ✈️😎💝
You guys are a hoot. Love the camaraderie!
Hellooo!!!
Can you please do an A-10 Warthog vs A-10 Warthog dogfight? (The one with the bb machine guns in it?)
That would be SICK!!!!
LOVE U GUYS!!
In the future, for 3d Printing, you can use a raft with a little bit of side support, up a little bit of the vertical wall.
Your videos always make me either smile or straight up burst out laughing 😃

That's sooo cool!!! But I'm amazed no one from flight test has never done this yet but they should really build the wright flyer !!
Great content as always ,always new things ,and you guys make planes . Awesome BUT ,A 3 minute commercial that’s a downer

Hi Flite Test!
