  • In this video, I show how I repaired an internal leak in my washing machine that caused it to fill with water while not running. I found the part number using the online schematic at sears.com, then I purchased the part from Amazon for less than $20.

    I’m in the process of repairing my whirlpool washer that wasn’t taking the water away, but have found that water is also leaking into my drum. I have now replaced the water pump and think my water inlet valve has broken too. So that will be my next job. I’m also videoing both jobs for my channel that I have just started. You’re video has given me a heads up to what my problem probably is and it’s my turn to pay it forward. Cheers

    You just saved me $300. I bought the part and installed it myself.
    My part requires two hoses inside to be connected which were each like 3 inches long. I was concerned that being 12 years old that they might crack and break as I struggled to pull them off the old part. The part was not easily accessible like yours in the video. So I disconnected the hose on the other end that attached to the machine and once I got the part further out of the washer I was able to pull off the two hoses more easily. I had to use pliers and wiggle them back and forth. It was impossible by hand.
    It was much easier to put in the part then it was to take out. I tested it and no leaks. I immediately did a load and it worked fine.

    I went in my kitchen about 5am to get a drink and noticed a small amout of water at the bottom of washing machine on the floor... i didnt notice the drum was full up with water and opened the door to look inside and got a big surprise when the water gushed out, i had trouble pushing the door shut because i wasn't expecting the drum to be full, i hadnt used the machine 4 or 5 days so i guess me inlet valve is also faulty because the drum was full up, maybe it was so full that it started backing up in the water tray and leaking onto the floor, a quick search online and it appers my inlet valve looks very similar to yours. We have the exact same washer and the exact same problem. So far I have been limping along by turning the machine on to drain it before opening the door but now I see that this has the potential to flood if the machine were left off for an extended period so I am going to order the part and turn the water off when not in use. Thanks for the video!

      I’m amazed at how they can use such cheap parts in a “good” washer.

    • @Nonplused
      @Nonplused 4 роки тому

      @@handydadtv Well you haven't checked pricing lately they aren't $20 anymore. "Cheaply made" would be a better description. Anyway I had trouble confirming I was ordering the right part because the vendors give a part number but not the models it fits, so I took the top off my washer so I could visually confirm it was the right one. Oh and wouldn't you know it the shut off valves for the water supply are seized so I probably have to cut the wall open and replace those too. :-( Oh well at least the hole will be behind the washer. How on earth it was ever decided a ball valve with a flimsy tab to turn it in a plastic recess was a good idea for a washer service I will never figure out. At least a regular garden style tap can be broken free when it seizes because the knob is more robust and it has mechanical advantage. Why these stupid ball valves? How much cheaper are they really? Not going to be much cheaper over the long run now that I have to replace them. Probably I'll wait until I get all the plumbing replaced because I have the crap grey PBE plumbing so it has all got to go soon than later too. So when you add it all up, the effort to save a dollar here and a dollar there means I have to replace this part, the supply valves, and all the plumbing in my house. The world has come to a dark dark place in terms of quality and durability. I wonder how much more it would have really cost to plumb my house with copper when it was built? Stupid plastic.

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  4 роки тому

      Wow I just “upgraded” my daughter’s washer hookups from garden valves to ball valves. 😳

    • @Nonplused
      @Nonplused 4 роки тому

      @@handydadtv Well, unless you used the big ones with the sturdy handles and the valves are well screwed to the wall I can tell you what will happen when it is time to replace the machine. You'll be using the main water cut-off to the house. I also have those ball valves on my in-floor heating and none of them turn. I busted the tab off one of them by hand before I gave up and just left the system open when replacing the surge tank. The ball valves with the tabs to turn them are absolute crap. They seize up over time and the tab isn't strong enough to deal with it. If you put a wrench on it you'll just break off the tab and as I said it is possible to do that by hand as well. I have other ball valves that have a sturdy handle that bolts on, and those still work. But the ones with tabs are absolute crapolla.

    • @Nonplused
      @Nonplused 4 роки тому

      Follow up: After a week for delivery and then another week arguing with FedEx because they applied the GST (I live in Canada) to the wrong account I finally got my part and the machine appears to be working again. So thanks for the video. I had my son do the installation as a learning experience since he gets no school right now. Still need to observe for a few weeks but hopefully this fixes it. If anybody else out there is reading this follow HandyDad's advice because we had it happen 3 times where the water filled up half the barrel and caused flooding twice when we opened the door (by the third time I was checking with a flashlight but still this was a problem). Once we finally got the part installation only took a little over half an hour and that was with a 14 year old doing it. Now to catch up on the laundry. That will take longer, I think. Anyway thanks HandyDad! (PS I still had to use pliers to open those stupid ball valves back up. Luckily the tabs did not break off. I don't think I'll be so lucky next time. Shut off valves should be designed with a 50 year life at least if you ask me. No point having them if they don't last longer than the washing machine or toilet or whatever.)

  • @diycentral
    @diycentral 2 роки тому

    Thanks for the post and link to the part. Your video will come in handy if we need to do the same fix on our Whirlpool. Just found a large amount of water on the laundry room floor this morning. Thought it was a leak from somewhere else I'm monitoring but it wasn't for the next thought was the washing machine and since I didn't see anything on the back, figured it was underneath until I noticed a steady drip coming out the front which we leave open to air out. Drum was completely overflowing. While dealing with a hot water heater leak and removing the tank and leaving the hot side open, I turned off the hot water to the washing machine so I could still run it... on cold only. I'm assuming that is still not good because I got a couple F20 errors and now this happened so I'm wondering if that lack of pressure on the hot water side is messing with the solenoids functioning properly. Time will tell. I think it took a day to fill so if it is still leaking, probably won't see anything in the drum for many hours.

    Could be the problem , I would have checked the valve for continuity to make sure it is a bad valve. Sometimes the water connection is just loose or it is a case of low pressure and washing machine is filling up when not in use so I would check supply line. Other than that a good diy if it is 100% a valve issue

      It’s not hard. And if you run into trouble, you can always call for service.

    Also looks like where the internal hose connects to the washing machine, on the white plastic? part, there are built up or wet lint looking stuff. My OCD alarm was tingling after I saw it.

    • @handydadtv

      Yes, regardless of brand. They all have an electric valve.

  • @786qad
    @786qad 4 роки тому +1

    I would have opened up the valve , take off the top by unscrewing it and replacing the washer thing and spring inside , spring costs 10 little pennies and is normally the culprit but still better than a repair man's bill

    Hello,
    I have similar problem on my Miele WDA 110. However, it only happens when washing completes but not during the washing. Could it still be the inlet valve problem?

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  5 років тому

      Most likely. Same with ours. After the wash completes, it had a slow leak that filled water in the drum until the next wash. If we left clothes in it for a day or two after the wash, they would be wet and we’d need to run it through a spin cycle again before taking them out.

    So I checked out my intake valve, hoping it would look like yours! Of course, it doesn't! I did find the part -it has 3 valves, but only two plastic extension pipes. I've just about unscrewed everything and I still can't get the dame piece out; there are also a number of wires connected that I can't seem to disconnect or loosen. CRAP!! Do I spend hundreds of dollars on a repairman, or invest that money in a new washing machine? It's hard to know, but my replacement part is coming up at $67, not less than $20. And, as I can't seem to get anything apart but the screws (ha!), one has to wonder whether it's worth the cost of a repair. They sure don't make appliances like they used to - as we all now know! Seems when I was growing up, most appliances had a 20-25 year life span. Now, one is lucky to get 10 years! And here I was, hoping I could fix it myself!

    The problem with these valves is when the break on the outside and water pours out. Happened with my dishwasher.

    Our Whirlpool duet top loader drips into the drum when off..You think it's the same problem?

  • @davidj7607

    I have the same issue, I'm assuming you can test it by taking it apart and seeing if the valve drains into a bucket over time when off?

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  7 місяців тому

      If you want. I just replaced it and moved on.

  • @MetroRatRace

    Can it still be the inlet valve if you don’t see water dripping when you pull out the dispenser piece (where you put in your detergent and water runs through it)?
    Also can it be a sporadic problem? If I run it once or twice in a regular load, the problem seems to go away. Or would that be a drain issue if it goes away?

      I don’t know. You need to find the part number.
