  • My thoughts and experiences with fasting for fat loss, controlling my overeating tendencies, and tips to get started.
    Fasting is not starving, I do not share the science behind this as I just share my personal experience. I encourage you to so your own research and look at people like Dr. Jason Fung and Megan Ramos from the IDM clinic. Read the Complete Guide to Fasting by Dr. Jason Fung and Jimmy Moore. And look to people fasting for healing their body like Mikhaila Petersen.

    So far, animal based way of eating plus fasting are the only things that are helping me with my overweight! My eating window is 2-3 hrs daily and if there is nutritionally dense food on my plate - I never feel hungry! Plus, my energy is on point, no swollen feet or mood swings!

      Leila Adams But are you over 5’6”? You might have unrealistic goals unless you are under that. Remember the insurance companies have charts that show how weight relates to life expectancy and the women who live longest are on average 25-35 lbs OVER what these poorly formed bad doctor charts actually pretend we should weigh. Take a deep breath, and if you really need to lose more, then extend your fasting, but breathe and relax...

    22 months keto , and as we speak I'm at 65 hrs on a fast and my ketones are normally 0.6-8 and when I checked it this morning it was 2.6 so that is coming from my body fat. That and autogaphy are two advantages of long fast on salt water and black coffee. I will do a very slow refeed at 72 hrs.

    I find that just eating carnivore makes you full for quite a while. There are days when I don't feel hungry following the previous days meal and the trick is to stop and push out the feeding window until you feel hungry again. It is strange but I can begin to understand why meat was so prized when available. It will allow you to go for longer. A 24 to 48 hour fast is always possible and the best thing is that you will enjoy have the meal after such an extended period as long as you include the fats that go with the meat.

    I eat every other day (3-4 times a week) on training days and I'm 23 years old. However I do think that OMAD might be better for older folks (30+) because of sarcopenia you really want to preserve muscle tissue as much as you can whilst also benefitting from fasting.

    Hi Laura! Question for you - when you do OMAD, do you still fit in about 200 grams of protein a day? I know you mentioned that in your hair regrowth video. I’m in the process of losing weight (I’ve got about 40-50 lbs to go) and trying to regrow my thinned out hair too. Trying to figure out how much protein I should aim to eat to do both those things, and whether it’s okay to eat less on fasting days.

    Laura I hope you answer this question: I have 2 medicines I have to take 2X a day (12 hrs apart) and must take them on full stomach or I get very nauseous & dizzy...so my question is if I fast 7pm to 7 am, take my meds & eat at 7 am then wait to eat meal 2 at 7pm when I take my meds again would the 12 hr fast and the time between meds be something that would work to help lose weight? Basically a 20 hr fast broken up 12 hr + 8 hr (9am - 5pm).

    • @jessiegunnes
      @jessiegunnes 4 роки тому

      You need to talk to your doctor about this. The reasons why you are taking the meds, the actual types of meds and there specific affects on your body play a huge role in the question you are asking. Laura is kind enough to share her experience with us, but she is not a doctor. Asking someone who isn't a doctor questions like this puts unfair pressure on them that they don't deserve.

      Hi Laurie, diet soda is very addictive due to the no calorie design. Diet soda has links to weight gain and metabolic syndrome, which can make diabetes worse or increase the risk of it developing. Some sweeteners in diet soda even cause insulin spikes in the blood which worsens insulin sensitivity over time and can eventually raise blood sugar levels. There are versions that do not contain Aspartame, Splenda, and the like.

    I would humbly disagree on the mechanism coffee would break a fast. I think instead, it’s a stressor that drives a hormone response resulting in a spike in blood sugar, causing a cascade fight or flight hormones including insulin and boom, fast broken.

    I always feel very, very weak and shaking after just a one day fast. My weight is 125 is it possible I'm too small to fast. The next day I'm so weak I have to eat something asap or I file like I'm going to pass out. Any thoughts anyone.

    • @LauraSpath
      @LauraSpath  4 роки тому +1

      It is likely more about what you are eating, not fat adapted. What do you eat when you do eat? Fasting isnt always/only for fat loss.

    • @YeshuaKingMessiah
      @YeshuaKingMessiah 4 роки тому

      At 125# you dont have the excess wgt to eat when you fast.
      You also HAVE to use electrolytes when water fasting, DAILY. Salt, potassium, magnesium are most important, vitC helps too so half a lemon a day is nice too, esp with adrenal issues.

    What you described is how I started intermittent fasting a year ago. It felt horrible too just like you said.
    But now I feel empowered when I fast. I feel better sometimes in my fasted state than when I eat which is strange to me but man it feels great to me. I like being in control of my food instead of my food controlling me. I have not fasted longer than a 24hr fast but I know I will get there some day. I am not in a hurry. I eat when I get hungry and I do not eat when I am not hungry.

    I'm frustrated because I switched over to carnivore 6 weeks ago and I've not really seen any weight loss (I have at least 50-60 lbs to lose) and now I see everyone who lost weight on carnivore is actually using fasting as a weight loss technique. Unfortunately, I can't fast for extended periods of time because of hypoglycemia. If I get to the 18 hour point, I faint. I don't know if this will correct itself over time? I'm just sad that carnivore alone won't work for me 😭

      @Zach David oooh boy. I started carnivore (from keto) and had terrible blood sugsr issues and was told I wasn't doing it right unless I was eating 2 lbs of meat a day (could almost get down 1.5 lbs) and I felt better. Got blood sugar under control and was told to do fasting. Now I'm being told 1 lb of meat a day... 😭😭😭 I guess I need to tweak and see what works best. I know the 1.5 lbs per day healed my blood sugar fluctuations but didn't make the scale move.

      I'm with you 30 more pounds to go. All I can add is trust your body. It's possible your hunger signals are messed up (leptin) fasting may help, but keep in mind your body is likely got repair work to do as well.

    How are you breaking your fasts? I know your carnivore, are your breaking with just a few bites of steak, and then full steak later? or just diving in a eating a full steak?

    • @LauraSpath

      Just with a full steak. If longer than 72 hours I might eat a smaller portion first

    • @LauraSpath
      @LauraSpath  4 роки тому +1

      I do and dont adjust my workouts with anything 48 hours or less. This past weekend I did a 1 hour intense workout at 46 hours fasted. When I did a longer extended fast I still worked out but wasnt as intense past the 3rd day. Mainly because I get hungrier.

    • @rdrake316
      @rdrake316 4 роки тому

      I would back off and not throw too many wrenches at your homeostasis. I can workout fasted but beyond 24 hours and it seems rather flat. I just use a sauna and drink plenty of mineral water with at least 1 teaspoon of Real Salt from Utah.

      Slow steady cardio at most during a 72 hour fast. You will burn fat like crazy. I'm talking 1 hour walk or bike ride. If you're gonna go in the gym and lift or do hard cardio...during 24-36 hr fast. I'd recommend (on 72 hr fasts) hard workouts on refeed days (best after eating for the energy) mTOR is off during a fast.

    I've gone as long as 72 hours before feeling like crap. Seems like that 36 to 72 is the sweet spot unless you are morbidly obese or are trying to go nuclear on a carcinoma.
    I do extended to not only regulate insulin sensitivity, spark autophagy but to try and mitigate inoperable cancerous tumors.

I keep wondering how I can learn to love eating steak, so that I can do the carnivore way of life. I enjoyed the video you did with your mother. I think I am going to start there with carnivore.

      I can't chew steak thoroughly due to molar loss. I just started eating carnivore a week ago. I throw two steaks in a pot and pour in one box of low sodium beef broth, then let it boil gently until the meat falls apart. Best to chose a piece of meat with a bone for the collagen to boost the bone broth.
