      Well yeah, most accurate theory is that it’s dr. Yeauh’s wife. After the harkonnens had taken her apart like a rag doll and probably experimented on her to create this abomination. It probably knows a human language hence why the voice worked. That being said, I’m not sure if the voice works on beings that don’t understand human language or beings that can’t hear, like the harkonenn soldier that was deaf.

      @Machiavelli2pc 2 роки тому +15

      @@bobbob5541 if you look it up, the vast majority of people believe it to be Dr. Yeuh’s wife. From the hands of the creature to the head (all look human, the head looks somewhat like a disfigured human head). The Harkonnens have a fetish for disfiguring humans and for disgusting pets. They might have used bene tleilaxu biological technology to do so. It could also be face dancers, chair dogs, or some sort of sex pet. I hope this isn’t spoilers but there aren’t any aliens in dune, all of the abominations are humans that have been genetically manipulated for specific purposes. Even the pets. The only exception *might* be shai halud.
      Edit: I might also add, yes- having the pet be Dr Yeuhs wife *does* in fact add to the story, as it shows how disgusting the harkonenns are. If you’ve read the book, the harkonnens in this dune movie are like Christian saints in comparison. The pet being dr yeuhs wife adds to their brutality to some extent. The Baron also has a fetish for disfigured human pets, whether for sex or humiliation purposes. I don’t think ‘bullshit’ is a nice term to describe this theory, especially for people who have read the books and are trying not to spoil things but know what happens, like me.

      I'm well aware that Harkonenns mutilate and modify humans, and that creature is almost certainly a disfigured human. But there is no reason to specifically think that "pet" is dr. Yeuh's wife. The only connection is that they're both (presumably) human characters in the same movie, and both are Harkonenns' captives.
      "vast majority of people believe it to be Dr. Yeuh’s wife"
      Even if this sweeping assumption was true (they did a survey or something? nobody invited me!) it wouldn't make it any more credible. Theory isn't good because it's popular. If the vast majority of viewers thought Piter de Vries and Chani were the same person it wouldn't make it true.

    I doubt the creature is Dr. Yuehs wife (though this would shed some new light on the Harkonnens ability for creepiness). The Baron was shown to stick precisely to his word : He insisted that letting the desert kill Paul and Jessica would quality as "not having harmed them himself". It seems logical the Baron would keep his promise to Dr. Yueh the same way. Reuniting him with his already murdered wife : Kill the Doctor. Reuniting him with a genetically altered wife would have meant for the Doctor to undergo the same transformation. (Also : Showing a tortured/mutilated Bene Gesserit to the revered mother and expecting her not to notice would have been a really dumb move on the Barons part).

      Wanna or not - it understands human language and Piter lied about it. So it seems to be a kind of secret listening device in addition to its function as a pet. The Dune books make particular reference to the use of humans and animals as weapons or for data transmission. The "pet" offers the possibility of recording the conversation, even though they were actually shielded against eavesdropping.
      And since the head appears remotely human, it can probably speak to reproduce the recordings. Creepy thought...

    I love the power of Voice and how it sounds on this movie, but I hate the way it was used here. The Voice's influence only works when the individual that is used on has been analyzed after saying some words, a phrase or even one or two sentences. It's not magic, it is a technique of manipulation that is projected on the individual targeted based on understanding the way the person communicates. The Bene Gesserits or the Kwisatz Haderach flex their vocal cords and muscles to create a voice that persuades the individual, a sort of short range hypnosis which allows the user to command the individual, this voice lingers in the person's mind and creates an effect that moves the subconscious and the conscious mind in tandem. This is why in the breakfast scene when Jessica tells Paul to use the Voice to compel her to give him the water, we are shown that her mind is making her act but since it was not yet well done, she caught herself before she actually grabbed the glass.

      @@jackrutledgegoembel5896 Indeed, that's how it should had been played off, but they used The Voice effect to give the appearance that The Voice was all magical and powerful. It is what annoyed me, the weird creature was a creative license that Villenueve took, Ok, acceptable, considering that in the novels like in god Emperor of DUNE there is a start of weird creatures that even Leto II (III) has such as Deerwolves and so forth.
      Also many fans of the movie say that this is what Dr. Yueh's wife was turned into, or that this was Yueh's wife. Another possibility in the sense of her death and a nice creative choice, though fan made. But still, it is the portrayal of The Voice that was wrongly used and it should have been as you said it should had been.

Is there any mention of the Voice being used on animals or lesser beings in the books? If not I don't think you can say this was 'incorrect'. Maybe not canon, but there could be more to it than what you referenced. I totally get what you're saying-that the movie didn't elaborate on the Voice as the book did, and presented it as a kind of super power, but I'm sure that was due to the limitations of adapting this to 2.5 hours (it would take more screen time to explain/show that level of intricacy)

    • @EternalRoman
      @EternalRoman 2 роки тому +1

      @@44142726 It seems you have not read the source material to plant such a question. The novels were entirely clear on HOW and with WHOM The Voice works with. All I stated comes from the creator of the original novels themselves, all 6 originals books, and even the son of the author has not altered this.
      That being said, to answer your confusion, it is clear that the Reverend Mother has never encountered neither this creature within the film, nor any like it because firstly she refers to it as "the thing" clearly indicating her limited knowledge of the creature though not surprised of its existence (this due to the novels' group known as the FaceDancers or Tleilaxu, whom dabble with genetic creations and manipulation in the Empire and wouldn't be pass them to create such things, even when they are not canon to the novels), and Pyter claims it doesn't understand speech, and as the Reverend Mother uses The Voice on it, she counters that it indeed does understand. This was made to make sure it does, and to make sure if it did or not.
      Another confusion you have is that The Voice works on all things the same, when it clearly does NOT, no matter if the creature was of a multitude of the same kind, the user of The Voice requires to understand and register the individual plain and simple. It gets to the point that even in the Novels, anyone that starts getting training in the Weirding Way is no longer compelled by The Voice, or at least has some resistance of its influence. Others have a solid mind that is basically almost impossible to be compelled by The Voice. Another thing that George Lucas "Borrowed" for Star Wars when the Jedi Mind Trick doesn't work in Watto.
      I would suggest to read the novels, and if you have, to re-read them again on this point, which is the whole reason I made the observation to begin with, so that fans of the film grab the novels, or even get to the audiobooks and hear it for themselves. It's a win win regardless for you and anyone that likes this film as well.

      Most likely, in Dune there exists a civilization called the Bene Tleilex who specialise in genetic manipulation. It is likely the spider creature was either bought by the Baron as a pet, or an enemy of his sent to be transformed by them as a punishment.
      Some have speculated its Doctor Yeuh's wife as the Baron had her captive but for her sake I hope not. What the Bene Tleilexans do to people is a fate worse than death, combine that with the depravity of the Baron and its all together not a fun time.

When the Reverend mother spoke the words "IT UNDERSTANDS" the film was announcing this creature was absolutely a modified human.

    I’m pretty sure Spider-Man won’t be so Friendly if he saw that Spider. Imagine if his Spider-Sense allowed him to talk to that Spider and he learns that it was once human. Baron dies right then and there.

    When the Baron said that Yuehs wife is still alive, its unlike the baron to lie. It only makes sense that he was referring to this abomination.

    I don’t understand the whole “there are no aliens” thing. If humans inhabited livable planets, then it stands to reason there is “alien” life, not intelligent, but life. As far as “no computers”, how the hell do the space ships and other aircraft fly? I just can’t fathom computers not controlling orinthocopters and ships in some capacity.

      There is no AI. There is a difference.
      And just because a planet is habitable for us, does not mean it is for any other potential life forms. The situation with AI and alien life in the Dune universe is absolutely a possibility.

    I know that this thing being Yuehs wife is far from being suggested in the film, but i still thing it would be such a powerful detail and add to the movie. Its very perturbing, gruesome, and it would be a really effective way to give depth to yuehs character and understanding how Yueh could treason his house and strict code. I really hope there is a extended version of this film
