THE DARK ELEMENT is a musical project featuring vocalist Anette Olzon (ex-Nightwish) and Finnish guitarist and songwriter Jani Liimatainen (Insomnium, Cain's Offering).
“Songs The Night Sings” takes off where the self-titled debut left off, with immaculate vocals from Anette and fabulous anthems written by Jani.
"It’s a thrill that we’re releasing yet another album and for me it’s been even easier to record this one since me and Jani now know each other really well. For me, this album is bigger and better and I believe the ones who liked the first one will really like this one too. All I can say is that I already long to do another album. Hep hep!" says Anette.
Jani adds, "I think the album is very heavy, but still hyper melodic, and this time we are even exploring new musical territories we didn't on the previous album. Now that me and Anette have one album together under our belts, we have found the style we want to pursue and also the ideal way of working together. Given all this, I think it's safe to say that with this album you'll get even more of what made the first album so good, only it's gonna be bigger, better and bolder!"
THE DARK ELEMENT made their live debut in June 2018 at the Sweden Rock Festival in Sölvesborg, Sweden. They also completed a short Japanese tour and performed at the Frontiers Rock Sweden festival in October at Fryshuset Klubben in Stockholm. More tour dates are planned for this upcoming album, so expect to see the band on stage again soon.
Since word of this project initially got out, fans were frothing at the mouth with anticipation for its arrival. And no wonder considering the talent involved! Anette is widely known for being the immaculate voice on the hit albums from Nightwish, “Dark Passion Play” and “Imaginareum”. Jani has recently been busy in Insomnium as well as Cain's Offering alongside Stratovarius singer Timo Kotipelto, but left a deep mark on the minds of all power metal fans thanks to his time in Sonata Arctica. The resulting debut album released in November 2017 took no time to prove that the resume of the individuals involved did indeed add up to the musical output.

I just have so much more respect for Annette now that I know she’s a nurse and she’s been working helping people in the midst of the corona crisis! I hope she gets all the success she deserves with her musical projects.

She's such a nice person in life as well...I remember I was only 12 when I went to my first Nightwish concert around 2007 and after the whole stuff she came down from stage and shook hands with fans...I couldn't say a word and nearly cried, she took both my hands and thanked me for coming and gave me a kiss on the face...her kids probably were in the same age as me...so in short she was an angel against all the mockery she recieved from Nightwish fans ❤

Never forget: she worked as a nurse during the pandemic and tragically lost her father in the early months of the pandemic, yet still kept going despite the grief. That tells me all I need to know about Anette's character and there's nothing bad to say. I'm glad to see she's back and has been putting out solo albums, collaborations, and with this band as well. She's made a comeback and it's well deserved.

I agree. Never thought she was a great fit in Nightwish. She couldn't do the old songs justice. Much more comfortable here.
@@ericsloss3963 Floor can't do the old songs justice either. Even her fans don't ask reactions to "Deep Silent Complete," "Wishmaster," "10th Man Down" which were sung in operatic fashion originally, nor even to less operatic ones like "The Siren" or "Nemo" or "Sahara" which were sung better by Tarja and Anette.
"Ever Dream" and "Ghost Love Score" are the only Tarja's era song that Floor sings well in my opinion, but both are contemporary style songs, so in the style she sings.
Edit: oh yeah, forgot the "Sleeping Sun". Of that song there's two versions, the original operatic version from 1999 and the rearranged contemporary style version from 2005, Tarja sings both, Anette and Floor sing the contemporary version.
And imho Anette makes better Storytime and Poet and the Pendulum too than Floor. But that I'm sure depends of which is your favorite. To me Floor sounds boring, monochrome soft in those songs, while Anette's voice is more coulourful and variation.
@@Aurinkohirvi I disagree 100% with your statement. Floor can do all the songs with ease. Anette couldn't do any of the songs from the first couple of albums. They didn't even really try. I am sorry, but Floor was the perfect replacement and a great singer. I've seen all of them live before (I've actually seen Floor with all of her bands). Anette is the clear third in live settings. Not even close. But if you like Anette, that is fine. As I said I think she is pretty good with this band.
I'm so happy for Anette. She received a lot of bulllshit and now it seems she has found the right place for her. Everything happens for a reason. And I'm also glad a lot of people are supporting her now ♥
She's a very good singer, and the amount of BS she had to take for not being Tarja was so unfair. She was really good at making the songs her own, and I always liked her version of Nemo better.
This seems to be just the right fit for her, and it sounds great.

The first album she did with nightwish sounded like she was trying to emulate Tarja (except for The Islander, I think her bright soprano makes the song more haunting) but I loved her in imaginarium

@@sirencall8073 emulate with a more drawn out, pseudo opera style. How Annette sings between the two albums is VERY different, with imaginarium sounding more like Annette's actual style. She sounds so much more comfortable and relaxed.
@@jamiewoods6799 Not really, Anette sounds better on Imaginearum due to the fact she practised heavily and worked on her voice, when she just joined Nightwish, she was a singer in an AOR band who was very different from NW. Anette's versions of Tarja's songs are very different from the original.
@@sirencall8073 well yeah, Tarja has a very dark soprano where Annette is a very bright and light soprano, and they have opposite singing styles. I'm not talking about Annette covering Tarja's songs, I'm saying that Annette sang in different styles in Dark Passion Play and Imaginarium, with her sounding better, more relaxed, and in her own personal style in Imaginarium. I'm not sure if Nightwish just needed the time to figure out how to best write songs for Annette's style, if it was a conscious choice for Annette to sing in the style that she did in DPP, or what. I'm also looking forward to NW's second album with Floor because I don't feel that they really have utilized Floor's full abilities or style in Endless Forms Most Beautiful, and I think in their next album there will again be a big difference in singing styles with Floor.
Anette´s voice is now much better than during her time in Nightwish. Her voice is getting better when she get older.
The crap she put up with while with Nightwish off the fans severely affected her confidence and in tern voice. It really hurt her. It wasn't her fault that they got rid of Tarja and went in another direction with a fresh sound. Her work on Imaginarium is some of the finest work that band ever saw, vocally she really showed off her voice in that one, and to this day I still rate that as their best album. Kinda comical that the most criticised vocalist in that bands history just happened to be on the best album they probably ever made lol. She always was a great vocalist, just different to what fans were used to. She certainly did not deserve the hate. She even quit the industry due to it, and works as a nurse now. Good to see her though doing more music in recent years. It was our loss that she left for a while. She's brilliant.

I think it was because NW fans wanted a singer that can do classical singing and operatic lines and Anette had pop style vocals instead. However, it must be said that the albums with Anette are still the most successful ones commercially.
Those people that prefer Anette simply like the more commercial style of NW songs. For me Floor is overall the best option but it's just a matter of taste. Scaretale is Anette's best NW song in my opinion.

She doesn't have the absolutely *astonishing* vocal range that Tarja had, which meant she really struggled with performing a number of Tarja-era songs on tour. The stuff written while Anette was with Nightwish, by contrast, works within Anette's range, and there she performs brilliantly. So if you're someone primarily enjoying the band through studio recordings, you'd never hear the mismatch, and Nightwish's songwriting is solid enough that it's able to account for singers having different capabilities without sacrificing the quality of the writing.
(And this is not a condemnation of Anette, this is akin to taking an opera piece written for a soprano and giving it to an alto singer...it's going to come out weird because you've picked someone whose vocal range doesn't cover the notes you're asking for. Anette and Tarja are both brilliant singers, it's just that Tarja has an unusually broad vocal range that makes songs written with that range in mind very difficult for others to perform - Nightwish later got very lucky with Floor Janssen, as she is also someone with an extremely broad vocal range.)
I am glad to see Anette back. Her voice has matured and she is truly in her element.

I'm kind of a little disappointed that this time all the videos are ONLY showing Jani and Anette. Last album had all four musicians involved in the videos. This time, it's more like "The Jani & Anette Show"....which it isn't. And I don't know why Jani always has to have his hair looking like he just bathed in olive oil, or why Anette seems incapable of picking a pair of shoes that match what she is wearing. She made great wardrobe choices in the very early Nightwish days. But that dress with combat boots? Nope.

I do not share your opinion. I love every vocalist Nightwish has ever had. That being said, I am uncomfortably aware from The Dark Element's debut album that she was not in the right place. At all. She is better here working with Jani than she ever could have been in Nightwish. I am very glad to get to experience this spectacular music, and glad she found a place where she can be more herself.
Love the song. Like the dress (wish it was a "bright" blood red), but the style is great. Anette just seems to get better with The Dark Element!
Storytime will forever be my favorite nightwish song and it will always be exclusive to Annette.

Floor isnt in the same league that's why her NW albums sound a bit dull where TDE albums have all of the spirit of those two NW classics. Ie do one

Anette has beautiful eyes and we almost don't see them completely in this video except for half a second. What an interesting decision the director and Anette herself have made for creating a new visual aspect for her and the video. Not every lady singer covers her most beautiful feature during the entire of a music video. A brave decision and obviously a nice result.
