Started playing 10 days ago when I inherited a Hohner Chromatic. Ill be playing this song at my grandpa's burial service tomorrow. Thanks for this video!
@ambroseboscozeal4christ218 yes thank you for asking ,at the graveside burial . Rushed a bit but mostly happy with how it turned out. A fitting tribute to my Grandpa Nate a lifelong harmonica player. l all of a sudden truly regret not learning sooner and playing with him before he passed. I have played every day since.
Oh my stars - I finally FINALLY got it - I can bend... 💃🤣😁😁😎✌✌✌I have been working on that for months. I will probably get up tomorrow and not remember how... lolol
Amazing Grace... Old Man River.... Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.... All songs with their bloody roots in the deep music history... It all gives goose bumps when emotions from the roots can be brought to the music in 2023....
Great lesson! I have played it in all 4 positions, but normally do the 2nd, with 3rd licks thrown in. I played this song at both of my parents funerals, the lesson had me a bit misty eyed. Thanks Luke! ❤
I swear to god playing single notes is still harder for me than bending. It's my mouth placement I know that, hopefully soon I will find a badass harmonica play so I don't develop to many bad habits.
4 -5 -5 aka Level 2 in this video is what I taught myself. I just seriously picked the harp up as an instrument about a month ago. I've been just doing train sounds off and on for 30 years. Good times!
Don't you worry, this is normal problem that most beginners experience! 👌🏼 These are the tips for a getting good -2: 1.) Let gravity lower your jaw so that it's totally relaxed and in a nice "aw" vowel shape, your teeth should be far apart from each other 2.) Keep the back of your tongue down, like it is when you yawn. Make sure it's not in the "Kk" zone (how your tongue is when you say a "Kk" consonant.) 3.) Nice steady, GENTLE, airflow. Most beginners (and many intermediate and advanced players) use WAY to much pressure. Hope that helps! 😎
So how do you know where to start for each position IF you’d like to dive more in depth on them?? Are the positions basically like learning all the modes or no? I have a limited knowledge of musical theory from study of pedal steel so I’m not completely ignorant of everything. 😂
There is a relationship between positions and modes, which I talk about here: forum.harmonica.com/t/modes-and-positions/8127?u=luke But since I posted that, I learned that positions really just refer to ROOT NOTE. Because utilizing bends you can play in different tonalities. For example, 2nd position is "naturally" mixolydian. But using bends, you can also play Dorian in 2nd position. Just one of many examples. So position just designates where your root note is.
All paths seem to lead to success. Thank you. Are you using your tongue for blocking notes when you create single notes? What are the advantages, disadvantages, and times when it's most important to use your tongue for blocking?
I'm using lip blocking as shown here ua-cam.com/video/v4mDMJzsnoU/v-deo.html Tongue blocking is great, most importantly for blues and for adding chordal sounds to melodies like here: ua-cam.com/video/uydniqDfAf4/v-deo.htmlsi=Jz8dYe_tesIa31On
Yes 12th position is easier than the first version. I learned it in 2nd position first 😂 I went backwards. Can you tell me if there’s a tasteful way to modulate from C to F to G (1st position, 12th position then 2nd position)?
Luke, it's really amazing, espeicially when blusifying from various position . BTW, I am so curious how to bending 7 hole as "Tyuh"? It seems part of B5 sounds and so quickly go to C6. The blow is nearly impossible bending. Am I wrong with that?
It would have been nice if your little icon arrow flipped upside down on the draw notes and then again on the blow notes that way I wouldn't have to remember which was draw and which was blow lol.
do you teach the Chromatic Harmonica as well? I t sounds much better for all these types of songs, more powerful, more clean... I love to learn the Chromatic harmonica after having listened to hundreds of videos by now.. both are interesting but the Chromatic got so much more potential that if I must start somewhere it feels as if it makes more sense to learn to play Chromatic first and in the future add diatonic as a thing for blues... but both are lovely for sure! just wonder if you can teach the chromatic as well? thanks!
Thanks for this great video. It's funny that after watching at least 10 other videos about Harmonica positions,, it was the amazing grace vid that finally made me understand that 2nd position means playing at one note higher than the harmonica's natural key.
Glad you enjoyed it! Close! 2nd position is actually playing up 5 letter names from harmonica: ua-cam.com/video/V2aokP8GriI/v-deo.html 3rd position is up one letter name from harmonica's natural key. Rock on! 😎
A few years back I had the opportunity to visit John Newton's home in Olney UK. I have always wanted to learn to play this hymn on the harmonica. Thanks for the great instruction 👍🎵🎶
I think it was easier playing in 12th position but I still don’t quite understand how to play in different positions. I know how to find them on the circle of fifths etc, but I just don’t get how to know what notes to play in a different position. My brain just doesn’t get it. 🤪
Your amazing Luke! Been dabbling with the harmonica for a while now. It’s hard when your trying to learn by yourself and no one to tell ya if your doing things wrong or right. I think I’m bending notes right I guess etc. it’s easy to lose motivation when your can’t really play anything. I need to get on the ball and get into your videos full speed. Thanks for everything bud!!
Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate it! Yeah if you're really wanting to get serious you might check out www.harmonica.com/lessons/ or pick up a private lesson with Todd Parrot
@@Harmonicacom Wow! Can’t beat that deal for 6 months lessons! I need to get a special 20 or something in C I guess then I’m gonna sign up. All I have is a blues harp in G. I figure that would work maybe too?
Amazing Grace with amazing teacher. 💯
Aw thanks! 🙏🏼
I'm learning Mary's last dance while playing rhythm guitar and playing harmonica
No easy task but we're nailing it.
Playing in 12th position in the key of f is definitely easier, the only thing is so many draw notes is something to get used to, awesome video
You're both amazing on this one and LT has so much tender kindness emanating from his smiling face and gentle guitar playing !
Yeah, he's amazing.
The blues one was beautiful.
Started playing 10 days ago when I inherited a Hohner Chromatic. Ill be playing this song at my grandpa's burial service tomorrow. Thanks for this video!
God bless you Justin!
Did you play it in the Funeral?
@ambroseboscozeal4christ218 yes thank you for asking ,at the graveside burial . Rushed a bit but mostly happy with how it turned out. Definitely easier in 12th position!!! Thanks!!!
Right? Crazy! Who'd have thunk it...
Excellent lesson
Thank you! 😃
You have put a lot of effort into explaining all this Luke, It's much appreciated by me and all your many followers. ...Sounds great mate !
Truth!
Great lesson, I'll try it tomorrow
You got this! 👊🏼
Nice a good use for the circle of 5ths 😜😜😜
Love that you modulate/change keys from 1 version to the next. Very nice
Glad you like it!

Right on Larry. Thanks for sharing this. I played it at my Grandma's funeral.

I don't think you should be swearing to God at an amazing grace video 😂 But, what the hell do I care? 😅
Lol but i got the point isolate notes and learn to tongue block ive learned amazing grace in like 3 ways to play it
Old dude drummer new to harmonica, your lessons are so helpful thank you!
dont know why you love that harmonica so much lol

Hi Luke, Thanks for this video
Is it a backing track in this video with amazing grace?
No that's my friend LT playing, and then I added in a bass afterwards.
Love This Lesson!..THANK YOU!😍
Hello EVERYONE. Totally awesome man. Thanks for sharing your talents with all of us... Be safe, u-all. Tampa FL. waving a hand.
Thanks 👍 Tampa. Aloha from Hawaii. Thanks for watching! 😎🙌🏼🎶
Could you present the Seydel Fanfare S please ? I consider buying one
Hmmmm.... Never even heard of it!
I think position 2 is somewhat easier than 1, but pretty much the same.
my 2 hole sounds like absolute garbage. :(

Glad it was helpful Chris!
SCOTLAND FOREVERRRR (could u make scotland the brave?)
In level 2 you used the C harp in 12th position to play in the key of F. If you used an F harp to play this, what are the tabs?
So how do you know where to start for each position IF you’d like to dive more in depth on them?? Are the positions basically like learning all the modes or no? I have a limited knowledge of musical theory from study of pedal steel so I’m not completely ignorant of everything. 😂

Right on. Glad you're off to a great start!!!
For me personally level two was easier than level one, but you're right that draw on 3 for level three makes it tricky!
guys do you also hear the air you breath out next to the sound of the harmonica? am I doing something wrong?
The mostly draw version much harder as not good on the draws yet!
All paths seem to lead to success. Thank you. Are you using your tongue for blocking notes when you create single notes? What are the advantages, disadvantages, and times when it's most important to use your tongue for blocking?

I learned it in 2nd position first 😂 I went backwards.
Can you tell me if there’s a tasteful way to modulate from C to F to G (1st position, 12th position then 2nd position)?
I think you can just do it with no transition, and it should sound great!
What key is level 3 in? Is it still key of F ? I like it also.
Level 3 is first position, key of C
Luke, it's really amazing, espeicially when blusifying from various position . BTW, I am so curious how to bending 7 hole as "Tyuh"? It seems part of B5 sounds and so quickly go to C6. The blow is nearly impossible bending. Am I wrong with that?
What about playing the guitar and harmonica. In other words you play both parts. Only one person playing both instruments !
Sure, you can! I don't really enjoy playing guitar and harmonica at the same time tho.

Sounds kinda like the titanic theme
ya the 2nd worked better for me to pick up, a couple darn high notes plugged on me
Roger that. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this great lesson. Full blues version sounds great when played on a G harp.
Oooh I love G and A harps! Rock on!
Thank you for a great lesson ! You are amazing ! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

That was beautiful

12th position much better than the 1st
Cool to hear James! That's what I thought too. 👊🏼
This is great, but on some of the notes there is like a quiver sound how do you do that,is that a breathing technique
That's "the coughing technique" back of the throat like if you pretended to shoot a machine gun or imitate a sheep when you were a kid.
9 blow gives me hell unless I’m reeeeal gentle, so yeah the second one a lot easier, still practice the first one though 👍
12th position the easiest, yeah?
Im going to stick with buddy green version
Still love you're videos
The key of F is my favorite for this particular song.
Cool. Yeah, I love 12th position for major songs with a little bit of a bluesy or should feel to it.
I enjoyed the Hawaiian guy with you.. i lived in Hawaii 15 years
Right on! Aloha. 🤙🏼
Key of F is way more difficult. My draws sound horrific.

What key harmonica is it?
C. All my videos to date, all C.
@Harmonicacom question, how do I refurbish an old worn-out harmonica?
Maybe it could be a good video for you ?
That's great I can play the same without any gudiance
Awesome!
Thanks brotha! It was easier than I thought it would be!
Glad I could help
hello! can I ask how to execute the 3" draw three whole step bend please?
Just takes a lot of practice! This tool might help give you visual reference of how deep you're bending it:

Hi Luke great lesson. Certainly for me easier in key of F !
I thought so too Stephen. Rock on! 😎

Hi. Sorry I don't teach chromatic. I'm a diatonic guy. Rock on! 😎
Still a beginner here and drew 8 is tricky still.. so 2nd position sounds like a better option for me.. thank you 😊
OK. Cool. You're welcome. It's my pleasure. Rock on! 😎

@@Harmonicacom 🤣 LOL, looks like I still didn't unravel the mysteries of harmonica positions.
I think the first riff is easyer. I like playing the 2nd riff on a G harmonica

I have always wanted to learn to play this hymn on the harmonica.

I definitely found 2 easier than 1. I'm a beginner so 3 and 4 are way past my ability at the moment. Thank you for the lesson.
Excellent! Thanks for the note. Rock on! 😎
How to bend the higher notes to get that sound?
Try "tyuh" or "kyuh"
I think it was easier playing in 12th position but I still don’t quite understand how to play in different positions. I know how to find them on the circle of fifths etc, but I just don’t get how to know what notes to play in a different position. My brain just doesn’t get it. 🤪
