If you don't think he's that good, try to learn the song. There is tabs for this version. It's crazy tough, especially with the 2/3 finger anchoring he does to add a beat on top of the actual riff. If you still think it's easy, sing on top of it. Good luck.
***** I think his genius is in his lyrics and creativity. Anyone can play fast and crazy techniques, but he makes it sound different and beautiful and adds meaningful lyrics.
Reading throught the comments on most of John Mayers tunes, you find that there are a lot of guitar players that comment. There is a reason that John Mayer videos attract guitar players. It's because he is a brilliant player.
A very underrated guitar player.. well no one but he is to be blamed for that. But he's a gem of a guitarist. I have never cared about his personal life goof ups and triumphs. His music has always inspired me :)
***** Definitely check out the John Mayer Trio stuff, he is one of the best blues guitarists going around, in the modern day anyway. He's always looked up to the likes of BB King, Albert King etc.
Many of us were caught up in that. The tabloids. Then I heard Continuum. Life-changing. Ten years on and it's the soundtrack of the end of my 22 year marriage. My kids were raised hearing the album and it holds special meaning for us all - more so now with losing my father. Thank you John. You have comforted us all in the past three years.
Fun fact : John revealed during the live event he did in MT in august 2022 that the clock time on the B&R artwork actually has a meaning. The pocketwatch on the artwork is set at 10:38 am. If you take the average lifespan of a human being and turn it into a twenty four hours clock, Mayer was at 10:38 of his life when he released this album. Now he's at about noon. He said, as soon as you start thinking of your life as a 24h clock, you realize you got to enjoy every day because it moves so fast, you find energy to live and make the best out of the time you got left. May it be another inspiration to everyone listening to this amazing track and album.
My first JM show was that night, under those enormous, beautiful pine trees. I brought my partner's daughter who stood through heat and then rain to get up against the stage, eventually singing every word to every song. Best part of the night was when John told the clock story, looked to her (she's 23) and told her she was "at, like, 9 am of her life". Something, like that, anyway. I was sitting on a log at the back of the audience, clueless he was referring to our Julia. Not a week goes by we don't reminisce about that very special evening in Paradise Valley. Crazy fun 48 hours from Toronto to Billings and back. Worth every penny.
+hialex Just got down Neon, so I guess I can start with this one :) BTW, thanks for the tip :) the singing part is just so hard to pair with the guitar playing!!!

i for one think he is the best singer/songwriter of our generation if not ever. you cant only love the music but also the emotion that each song gives. and also you cant forget the complexity of every little guitar lick he does!
well for a beginner thats probably good advice tbh.. many people wrap their thumbs around the neck when they first hold a guitar because they dont know any better
IN the begginnning of learning guitar its better to have the thumb in the middle of the back of the neck because it gives you fingers an easier angle to press the strings without the fingers muting the other strings
Goddamn this song…deeply deeply underrated. I just got out of a long period of making one bad decision after the other, which almost entirely ruined a relationship with a person that’s very important to me. I had a chat with that person recently showing them my newfound perspective on myself and our situation. I told them that I finally figured out I’d been kind of an asshole and a creep and how I’d realised that “you could be wrong and swear you’re right” and how I’d been doing so my entire life. This situation opened my eyes about that. After that conversation I went home and listened to this album again. To this day it still baffles me just how much music can connect us. There isn’t a single other songwriter who’s songs have felt this human, this raw and honest. Some people write relatable lyrics to be relatable but not John Mayer. He’s human and he writes about things that are so human you can’t help but relate to them. He is an inspiration to a generation of songwriters and guitar players and I’m sure that him and his music will be my companion for the rest of my life.
amazing song, john mayer is seriously one of the best artists today, a true genius in my eyes....and the little smirk at the end of the song was good...haha
this song... gripped me. I have had some trials over the last few years that almost broke me. Had some things happened, said, done and all of that should have wiped out all I have worked for. These are the words and notes I wished to know how to produce. Thanking back on what I have over come, listening to this makes me tear up a little.
I can't listen to this song without tearing up. it is very relatable to me, I've hurt people in the past and haven't been the best version of me but I look back and try to be better every day. But I'm happy for the rough parts because I needed them to grow. Much love

John Mayer has been a great inspiration in my music writing so far. I've listened to so much John Mayer that people say I sound like him. Haha. I just want to say, "Thank you John Mayer!" If not for you, I wouldn't be where I am now with my music.

Probably a good thing about living in England is that we don't really hear of his good ups, not that I care anyway - I respect the man and wish him all the best, but he will always be one brilliant musician who has inspired me greatly!

that's a genius interlude if you ask me. This guy pulls off chords out of nowhere. I think that's the base of his sound: simple (and not so simple) progressions but brilliant, unique ways to play them
1:54 When you're watching his hands so closely you notice the editor cut to the wrong part of the song for the upcoming closeup. Man, learning this style of finger picking changed my guitar playing forever.
I finally learned to play this song as this version, guys it's hard it took me months of practice to master it.. Once did it I knew there's nothing called impossible for me now. Thanks John for keeping me inspired all those days ♥️♥️♥️

Such a beautiful songwriting and the acoustic version brings the song to another dimension. Been feeling really close to this song and whole album recently, thank you John!
I've always loved John Mayer. Such a amazing performer. Writes his own stuff plays his own stuff. So talented. And his music teacher said that John would never make anything of himself.
Hello There! I really want to say a very big thank you with this opportunity maybe I won't have this again,☹️ to sayTHANK YOU for your like and believing in me,the journey so far has been a dream come true having amazing people as fans,I really do feel blessed. It has been your love and support that has kept me at my best, stay blessed..🤗😊
Just down for about an hour to try and learn that first small beginning riff. It's almost offensive how easy he makes this look. My hands feel like they've been in a vice grip
More of a technical question for the engineers here. What is that small mic used on the guitar? Cause for the vocal its a U47, and the guitar is mic'ed by a C12 and that small mic. Could it be a R121?? Idk help!!
I'm doing a video tutorial of this version with a TAB, it should be out by mid February. One thing I'd like to say is thanks for this awesome version and video, it helps the transcribing process a lot. There should be a guitarist on hand to tell the editor who cuts the video together not to re-use footage from other sections. In fact this whole performance appears to be lip-synched in multiple takes (one cam shoot maybe) but he does stay faithful to the hand positions for the most part.
"I ain't no trouble maker and I never meant her harm and it doesn't mean I didn't make it hard to carry on, it sucks to be honest and it hurts to be real but its nice to make some love I can finally feel." short , sweet , powerful and honest.
l agree with you, indeed John Mayer is a great and talented artist who's songs never goes out of style, he's one of my favorites artist, he's songs still and always heals the Soul, I pray God gives you lot of beautiful days
It's called the "clawhammer" technique. It's a banjo picking pattern which has been around for a long time. He's very good at it, but you can find plenty of tutorials on UA-cam. Some of the best fingerpicking guitarists are also banjo players. Example: Ron Block from Alison Kraus and Union Station.
This is a good song because John took the time to chronicle where his head was at, at that particular point in his career and life! He is not a transparent man, and somewhat cryptic. So having him talk about himself and his feelings allows fans to gain some perspective into this artist, how he feels about himself, about things he's gone through and where his head is at now. That's a very generous pour, but I think John knows that his fans genuinely love him, for him. We're there for him, and he's here for us too. Another good, good reason why he will forever be A Genius, A Master, The Man and THE KING ❣💡💎👑

I agree, but he also is undoubtedly one of the best guitar players in music today.
Can't argue with that. At least within his genre.
***** Or if you think this is easy.... try to play Neon and sing at the same time :D haha!!
mitin timisin mmm...and what about In your atmosphere? the live version from the DVD... also very hard for me xD Mayer is a genius
Reading throught the comments on most of John Mayers tunes, you find that there are a lot of guitar players that comment. There is a reason that John Mayer videos attract guitar players. It's because he is a brilliant player.
His technique is so unique and so good so that it attracts players from all skill levels
He’s a gifted musician
And he was the reason I picked up a guitar and the first thing I tried to learn was Daughters
He makes guitar players hate themselves lol.
@@PatrickRob82 He is good, but that's about that, he ain't some sort of mirakel, and this is one of his easier songs 🙂

Love how many guitarists are in this comment section. He's honestly one of the best out there.

He’s the most underrated musician ever, only guitarists seem to know how good he is, I mean, this video has 19k likes after 8 years, that’s nothing!!
For anyone that wants to learn the song, its the same picking technique he uses for Neon.......... So good luck....
+hialex Just got down Neon, so I guess I can start with this one :) BTW, thanks for the tip :) the singing part is just so hard to pair with the guitar playing!!!
See my problem isn't the picking/strumming. It's my hands are too god damn small to play those chords. That's my curse... I hate that.
Jim Amaral buy a guitar with a smaller neck
Actually there's a little different from Neon. The difference is in the passage of the thumb.
sorry my silly question. ..is there another guitar player behind or it's just John? sounds as if there"re 2 guitars 😨
So enderrated but so good. It's 2020, in the middle of pandemic, and this song it is one of little things that brings my peace right now. Everything is gonna be all right folks
Me too. Thanks Renata.
enderrated?
i for one think he is the best singer/songwriter of our generation if not ever. you cant only love the music but also the emotion that each song gives. and also you cant forget the complexity of every little guitar lick he does!
man the change in his vocals from his first album to now is just amazing. that soft vibrato....wow... i have always been and always will be a huge fan
When I took guitar lessons, my teacher used to tell me not to use the thumb on the E string to do the bass. I'm glad John Mayer never heard this guy.
Why on earth did he tell you that?
if anything, using the thumb gives you more opportunity to make more difficult chord shapes.
well for a beginner thats probably good advice tbh.. many people wrap their thumbs around the neck when they first hold a guitar because they dont know any better
Maybe it's because u were a beginner, if it's good enough for people like john mayer and jimi Hendrix it's good enough for u
IN the begginnning of learning guitar its better to have the thumb in the middle of the back of the neck because it gives you fingers an easier angle to press the strings without the fingers muting the other strings

because of john mayer i never use a pick and just fingerpick everything. i think him for this. Mayer is the KING of today's music

Hard times, let me be
I'm a good man with a good heart
Had a tough time, got a rough start
But I finally learned to let it go
Now I'm right here, and I'm right now
And I'm open, knowing somehow
That my shadow days are over
My shadow days are over now
[x2]
Thanks :)
🙏
His face at the end of this is epic, loool. Awesome acoustic rendition of Shadow Days
sweet tune.
It mirrors what ive been through lately, and I belive it's totaly worth Loving no mater what you will get in return.
I listen to every song and I cant seem to find a single flaw in his voice since..... ever..
My favorite song by JM.......Awsome song
Such a beautiful songwriting and the acoustic version brings the song to another dimension. Been feeling really close to this song and whole album recently, thank you John!
You are my god.
@Simply Put :))))) what a way to evangelize
Johnny boy, you gotta get back to the early 2000s and bring that guy back and get it done!
Love love , do not get tired of hearing 😍
i love watching these acoustic sessions for what he does after he finishes the song lol
Terrific session. Really enjoyed.
GOOD LORD ITS THE NEON TECNIQUE APPLIED TO SHADOW DAYS!
As always John: wow.
I've always loved John Mayer. Such a amazing performer. Writes his own stuff plays his own stuff. So talented. And his music teacher said that John would never make anything of himself.
Adore this song. So good

It has been your love and support that has kept me at my best, stay blessed..🤗😊
Anyone who plays a guitar can see how crazy good he is! Got 1st row floor seats for KC show in April, cant wait.
I like this version more because I feel it is faster than studio version and it suits the song better :)
John Mayer is the biggest guitarist from this generation
Sweet picking technique
Gibson Blues aa
hahahah indeed
How does he do it😨
@@musicjrb4119 I think it’s just his classic thumb-index-thumb-index-slap technique but I haven’t started learning it so idk
he did this same picking technique he uses for Neon
thanks john, for all the good music, and as a musician you´r an inspiration
awesome performance, really
imo all of his albums were a success they all seemed to suit the exact moments through my life.
Just down for about an hour to try and learn that first small beginning riff.
It's almost offensive how easy he makes this look. My hands feel like they've been in a vice grip
i love the little drum thing when john is picking the strings!
Trying to find one John Mayer song to sing and play is so hard.
This is very easy to play! (The basic chord structure) sounding good singing it is a different story ;)
Try daughters to start with
Not Myself from Room for Squares is probably your best bet man
That right hand technique just amazes me. Perfect rhythm and he just pulls the song out of the guitar with it.
More of a technical question for the engineers here. What is that small mic used on the guitar? Cause for the vocal its a U47, and the guitar is mic'ed by a C12 and that small mic. Could it be a R121?? Idk help!!
The one and only. the "sm-57" of the ribbon world.
Ive listen to this 100 times. Its so great.
He makes it look effortless, it's so unfair...great guitarist!!
"I ain't no trouble maker and I never meant her harm and it doesn't mean I didn't make it hard to carry on, it sucks to be honest and it hurts to be real but its nice to make some love I can finally feel." short , sweet , powerful and honest.
l agree with you, indeed John Mayer is a great and
talented artist who's songs never goes out of style,
he's one of my favorites artist, he's songs still and
always heals the Soul, I pray God gives you lot of
beautiful days
I'm about 10 years late, but man this was beautiful. Nice job.
Much better than the original !
Hello Sarah how are you doing hopefully you are doing good??
Such a beautiful version of the song John.
Kind of the same right hand technique used on "Neon" :) Hard one...
Eric clapton once said that john is so good that he himself doesn't know this !💞🙌🙌
how does this not have a million views
It has two million views so that might explain why it doesn't have one million.
One of the most beautiful progressions I've had the pleasure of hearing.
A love letter to himself. Classic John! 🤣

I really don't think he realizes that he is extremely good.
Dhruv Dattani I think he does.
***** called him a master he did
He doesn't. Watch where the light is concert, he said he's unsatisfied with his playing.
+Dhruv Dattani He knows he's good
+afc chode Literally every guitar player is. But he knows he's good.
