I love John Mayer songs comment sections. People seem to genuinely care about him, but not in an angry way like with some fandoms. There is a genuine camaraderie here. People open up and relate to one another. I know this happens elsewhere in youtube comments but there is something about John Mayer songs and john mayer fans. It is really fun to be apart of this gently aging fandom of people who love music and who love john. So thank you.
Yeah the man's got a (relatively) small yet loyal fan base who like to read lyrics word by word, and consume song as a whole since it always hit them in some ways.
+Daniel Samperi I agree. Because the song is basically saying "I made a lot of mistakes and said some fucked up stuff and for that I apologize. But now, I am letting it go and moving on with my life." The song makes me feel like you can always change who you are, improve yourself, let go of the past, and start a new life. :)
It's amazing to listen to this song while you're going through the same path and moving on from the past and forgiving yourself. John never disappoints. His songs will be always my all time songs.
Same. I'm glad that this side of John Mayer hasn't totally subsided post B&R and Paradise Valley. B&R I feel is his real masterpiece since it's the most musically inclined and honest piece of artistry he's ever completed. Yes, I am well aware of Continuum, but I still think B&R is superior.
One of if not the greatest artists of our time. Hands down. So underrated it's unreal. I'll always hold his songs near my heart. Got me through the worst times of my life. Honestly my own shadow days are over now.
the media and the press always find ways to bash his image. he is just like any creative, honest and blunt opinionated person. only difference was that he was in the camera all the time and never had privacy. everything he said was magnified and exaggerated. yes he was an ego addict, but that is all common when you are have someone who is extremely talented and attractive in the eyes of the public. it was only a matter of time before the media took advantage of that and made the people believe ridiculous things, which took a toll on his mental health as he let it get to him. just like any person john has experienced a shit load of pain and unnecessary comments , but he is just as human as the guy you called an asshole because he was proud of how he could play the piano. we have to stop thinking that when a person knows what they are skilled in, that does not make them a bad person.
Yeah he has been bashed for things that ppl should let go of. I'm so glad he didn't do a Brittany and a Justine spas out! I admire Justine , love his music too. I'm happy John has an outlet for all his naysayers.
I love being able to come back and watch this video. My grandma passed a few years ago but it makes my soul happy to see her with my grandpa in this video. Love you grandma❤ 2:50
This song represents a challenge that is so hard to complete, and that’s forgiving yourself. This song has been a rock for me through some of my lowest points and will forever be my favorite John Mayer song. Big ups my guy, and Godspeed!
The album Born and Raised just grows up on you, I didn't like Born and Raised when I first heard it TBH but now after listening to the album 2-3 times, I can't get enough of it! Honestly a very underrated album.
This song was my mantra as I was coming out the other side of some of the worst times in my life. It's like a rebirth, and it feels that way every time I hear it. It's that glimmer of hope that you gain after you take those first few steps toward redemption with your heart still in your stomach. Thoroughly grateful for this song.
"I'm a good man with a good heart Had a tough time, got a rough start And I finally learned to let it go Now I'm right here, and I'm right now And I'm open, knowing somehow That my shadows days are over My shadow days are over now"
2012/13.... This song reminds me of a time when I lived with my late sister... she helped me in the process of ending my love relationship... there were a few nights crying and she came out of her room to welcome me... It helped me a lot! Today I'm with my wife, but now I miss my sister who helped me so much... I sometimes cry for her... I lost her to cancer... I hope spiritually to find her again! I love her so much and I only ask God to see her again one day. Gratitude.
John Mayer's older music never struck me but this one!! It's really super super good. It's right up there with Dylan and Neil Young. Heartfelt, simple...beautiful - go John you've re-invented yourself and it's a gift, go with it Bro. The world is getting ill from digital fatigue and organic acoustic music is a wonderful cure.
Since you have opened yourself to the idea that he is talented and not the brat the media tried to paint him to be; I think you should go back and register to his old music. I think you will be more open to how skillfully John Mayer pens his lyrics.
It´s hard to let things go and move on. But one day you have to believe again and take a first step and hope that beginning will lead to resolving. It´s better than doing nothing. Losing yourself is not worth it .
This song cuts deep. It's just a sweet combination of humilty, redemption, and hope all rolled into one beautiful tune. Thanks for sharing your music with the world, John. It matters.
Thanks John for saying these things in you music/songs that I didn’t know how to say all this time. I’m just a nobody 45 year old husband and father who is trying to keep it all together all the time for those who I love. I won’t ever stop being a better me but it’s really exhausting sometimes. I’m not complaining just being honest. To be able to sit for a minute and hear a song(s) that describes how you are feeling and get that much needed release for the small moment in time that someone else knows how it feels is truly a great gift. Thank you sincerely John.
Song changed my life. I’m listening again after so many years all I can do is cry. I use to live with my mom n she will get me mad I’ll be in the room listening to this song on repeat n wishing I can just run away from Africa to America live my life in a country town. But now years later my mom is dead ive grown into a man living alone in my apartment remembering those times I use to live with mom. I miss you mother. Rest in peace.
at 2:27 that out of key line somehow captures this perfect moment where things aren’t aren’t going the way they should and then it moves back into the key and makes perfect sense
Country artist Chase McDaniel mentioned that this song helped him so much with depression. This song is so beautiful and healing. Thank you for helping me come out of my depression with your song of encouragement. Healing through music is such a beautiful thing. God bless you!

I don't know what it is about this album, but I got it in the Winter. And for some reason, I can only listen to it in the Winter - and it feels so magical, especially when I get up early and driving down the motorway as the sun is still rising. It feels so special and I get that warm feeling even though it's so cold.

I have no idea if John Mayer is an addict, but I'm one, and listening to this song, I can relate so much to it. Wrecking things, ending up "In pieces on a hotel floor.." It's about forgiving yourself and moving on, to me at least. Been sober for a year now, and I've let my past go and am living for today. Great song, great message.o it
He is not underrated by any means, but he is just not popular as many other "hit-makers" simply because his music and lyrics are complex. In my opinion, he is an incredibly clever lyricist and an amazing songwriter. People may or may not like him but they definitely can not (and most of them will not) deny his incredible talent.
This song/album came out at a really hard time in my life where I had to make some tough choices. Fast forward 8 years and my life is better than I could have ever hoped for. This song genuinely helped me. Ever time I thought of giving up I would put this on and push forward. Thank you John for using your extraordinary talent and making a change in my life.
My "shadow days" were caused by hypochondria. In my darkest days, when I had my head between my knees, trying to convince myself that my fears were all in my head, barely being able to function because I was always afraid something was wrong, God gave me somebody that made me feel like me again..... he was a miracle, there isn't a doubt in my mind. Sooo...who can do this? Who can literally sing country, pop, folk, jazz and even soul music?? And its ALL good?? Wow John does it all! What an incredible artist!! 😍😍😍
I’ve been listening to this song a lot lately ..it is so emotionally connected...so real. Thanks John for simply making music that’s honest and real.Love it still in 2020.

Found this so late, but such a great song. I'm from Idaho, and the fact that he left Cali to live in Montana speaks such truth to his person. I believe in the power of getting to the mountains, windows down, music going while you're driving, and then silence and being with nature can heal your soul emencly in those moments of need. Idaho is so overlooked, and has so much peace, and beauty. Love him, and everything this video/song stands for. It obviously has deeper meaning that what I just said, but even what I've said is magical lol.
Never really appreciated this song until recently. In and out of a bunch of short, turbulent relationships. I was definitely the bad guy, or at least I let myself act like him for a while. Need a break, a reset

So true!!
Yeah the man's got a (relatively) small yet loyal fan base who like to read lyrics word by word, and consume song as a whole since it always hit them in some ways.
John Mayer is like wine, the older he/it gets, better he/it becomes.

Lyrics👇
Did you know that you could be wrong
And swear you're right
Some people been known to do it
All their lives
But you find yourself alone
Just like you found yourself before
Like I found myself in pieces
On the hotel floor
Hard times, help me see
I'm a good man with a good heart
Had a tough time, got a rough start
But I finally learned to let it go
Now I'm right here, and I'm right now
And I'm open, knowing somehow
That my shadow days are over
My shadow days are over now
Well I ain't no trouble maker
And I never meant her harm
But it doesn't mean I didn't make it
Hard to carry on
Well it sucks to be honest (honest)
And it hurts to be real
But it's nice to make some love
That I can finally feel
Hard times, let me be
I'm a good man with a good heart
Had a tough time, got a rough start
But I finally learned to let it go
Now I'm right here, and I'm right now
And I'm open, knowing somehow
That my shadow days are over
My shadow days are over now

Tahukah kau bahwa mungkin saja kau salah
Dan kau bersumpah dirimu benar
Beberapa orang memang begitu
Melakukannya sepanjang hidup mereka
Namun kau temukan dirimu sendirian
Seperti kau temukan dirimu sebelumnya
Seperti kutemukan diriku hancur luluh
Di lantai hotelku
Kesulitan membantuku melihat....
Aku pria baik-baik dan berhati baik
Pernah lewati waktu sulit, dan pernah jalani awal yang berat
Namun akhirnya aku berusaha berubah
Kini aku seperti yang kau lihat sekarang ini
Dan aku berharap, dan entah bagaimana kutahu
Bahwa hari-hari gelapku tlah berlalu
Hari-hari gelapku tlah berlalu
Aku bukanlah pembuat onar
Dan aku tak pernah bermaksud menyakitinya
Namun tak berarti aku tak menyakitinya
Sulit tuk terus begini...
Memang menyebalkan rasanya jika harus jujur
Dan sakit rasanya menjadi apa adanya
Namun menyenangkan tuk dapatkan cinta
Yang akhirnya bisa kurasakan
Kesulitan tlah membentukku....
Hebat
Benar benar dalam sekali lirik lagu ini buat saya sangat dalam
Found this so late, but such a great song. I'm from Idaho, and the fact that he left Cali to live in Montana speaks such truth to his person. I believe in the power of getting to the mountains, windows down, music going while you're driving, and then silence and being with nature can heal your soul emencly in those moments of need. Idaho is so overlooked, and has so much peace, and beauty. Love him, and everything this video/song stands for. It obviously has deeper meaning that what I just said, but even what I've said is magical lol.
Eu amo tanto esse homem!!! 😍
amazing song...just like JM ,a true artist ,a fit for all genres ..my fave artist hands down
Never really appreciated this song until recently. In and out of a bunch of short, turbulent relationships. I was definitely the bad guy, or at least I let myself act like him for a while. Need a break, a reset
