  • Hello again, Classical MIDI fans! What better way to walk off the abundance of Thanksgiving feasting than a nice stroll along a running stream, taking in the sights and sounds of nature? This is the emotive feeling behind today's selection: the second movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 ("Pastorale") - "Scene am Bach", which translates to "Scene by the stream". From the constantly rolling movement of the strings, to the swinging nature of the melodies, it wonderfully evokes the image of a boat lazily following the flow of the water, trees in full color starting to shed their leaves, and even ends with a cadenza of bird calls coming from various woodwind instruments! They are helpfully identified in the score itself: a nightingale (Flute I), a quail (Oboe I), and a cuckoo (Clarinets I & II, in unison). I personally hear Beethoven's love of nature in every measure, and it's one of my favorite pieces of music by him.
Technically speaking, this movement was actually MUCH harder to execute that I had anticipated at the start of it. The two solo celli playing con sordino were simple enough to execute with the MSS Solo Cello and the CSSS Cello libraries, but the overall dynamics of the ostinato rhythm that predominates the violas and second violins were far too loud than the dynamic markings would indicate. I'll talk more about this during an upcoming tutorial video, but I don't use "ostinato tools" in any of my software libraries, as I find it incredibly difficult to set them up to match any tempo "flexibility" I build into a piece. Instead I use the "Sustain: Accented" articulation from MSS and the "Sustain" articulation in CSS, despite the legato markings, overlap the notes slightly, and lower the dynamic markings one level. This produces the proper effect without over-powering the rest of the ensemble. Furthermore, where "dolce" is marked at certain soloist moments, I increase the dynamics by one level above written to highlight that melodic line. Obviously that's just a guideline, but it works in most cases.
Like I said, I'll go over the thought process behind this in much greater detail soon, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, so please leave your comments below, with suggestions on how you achieve similar results! I love to have your feedback, so please share what YOU think, as well as any other pieces you'd like to hear!
