  • Welcome back, Classical MIDI fans! It's been a little while, but we are BACK with the next step in our "Symphonic Journey" with the second movement from his Symphony No. 41 in C Major, the Jupiter Symphony. Considered by some historians to be a subtle l'homage to Johann Sebastian Bach, it is the only symphonic slow movement in his entire catalogue to bear the indication "cantabile" as part of the tempo marking. It is a delicate, lilting, but slightly haunting contract to the vigor of the opening movement - haunting, in the sense that it is a bit disconcerting in how the principle melody, first uttered by the muted violins, is never truly allowed to resolve itself without something interrupting it. It also specifically highlights the woodwinds as a choir of sorts, in how his arrangement at times seems to pull the strings back as an undercurrent, rather than the other way around. Finally, the sudden changes of dynamics throughout the movement reflect back on his friend Haydn's textures, which may have - in turn - inspired Haydn's last musical joke within his "Surprise" symphony.
From the technical perspective, this movement was the exact opposite of the first, in that it was incredibly difficult to get the right tone and articulations from the muted violins and violas. Why do libraries NOT include a full articulation set for con sordino patches?!? Only one major library I've worked with does - Cinematic Studio Strings - but it's far too lush and Romantic in its tone to be appropriate for this work. MSS at least has three different "attacks" in its con sordino "Longs", which allows me to get close to what I was aiming for -- although having "Shorts" would have made the job MUCH easier. I know that Aaron Venture and the Infinite Series will be coming out with Strings at some point in the future (although I have no idea when that will be), and I'm greatly looking forward to seeing how it handles this, with its unique approach to sample modeling. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the matter, so please leave your thoughts in the comments section below!
