Director of The Spider’s Stratagem, The Conformist, and Last Tango in Paris, Bernardo Bertolucci was one of the greats of Italian cinema. In 1987 his acclaimed epic The Last Emperor - made with British producer Jeremy Thomas (Naked Lunch, Crash) - swept the 60th Academy Awards winning nine Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director.
Following the life of Pu Yi, the last of the Emperors of China, from his birth in 1908 through his childhood in the fortress-like Forbidden City and his later misguided collaboration with the Japanese in World War II, The Last Emperor tells the history of China through the eyes of the man brought up to believe he was the country’s divine ruler.
Filmed on location in China, Bertolucci and Thomas were the first western filmmakers to be allowed access to previously forbidden locations. Together with a cast including John Lone, Joan Chen and Peter O’Toole, and director of photography Vittorio Storaro’s lushly evocative cinematography, they created a classic film of sweeping scope and delicate intimacy that stunned critics and audiences alike. The Last Emperor arrives in a brand new 4K restoration that will take your breath away.

I wish this 4K release was coming out here in America. Definitely one of my favorite films of all time.
I imported the 4K disc and it plays perfectly on American UHD players. 4K discs are region-free by design. The only downside is that you can't play the region 2 bluray extras.

The Last Emperor's poster was the first movie poster that made me watch the film. And Score and Production Design are masrerpieces
This movie deserves to be appreciated as same level as Godfather , Apocalypse now and Raging bull , its true art but so underrated , both audience and critics do not pay attention to it anymore. It's not in imdb's 250 and Sight and sound's 250 , truly underrated

Why?
Ryuichi Sakamoto, who composed the film's music, plays the role of Masahiko Amakasu, an ultranationalist who was the director of the Manchurian Film Company and the shadowy ruler of Manchukuo.
Amakasu Masahiko was a military police officer in the Imperial Japanese Army when he killed Japanese liberalist Osugi Sakae, his mistress, and his 9-year-old nephew with a military sword.
Without being tried by a court-martial, he went to Manchuria and became the shadow ruler of Manchukuo.
Ryuichi Sakamoto brilliantly played the role of Masahiko Amakasu, a man of great shadowy character, with a spine-chilling brutality.
In reality, Sakamoto Ryuichi is the complete opposite of Amakasu Masahiko.
He was involved in the leftist movement when he was a student, and later became a liberal figure in social movements such as the anti-nuclear power movement.
Sakamoto Ryuichi was a liberal who could objectively see right-wing nationalists who were the complete opposite of himself, which may have made his performance rather convincing.
On April 2, 2023, his death was reported.
本作で映画音楽を担当した坂本龍一は、劇中、満州映画会社の所長にして満州国の影の支配者とも言われたウルトラナショナリスト、甘粕正彦を演じた。
甘粕正彦は大日本帝国陸軍の憲兵将校であった当時、日本のリベラリスト大杉栄とその愛人および９歳の甥を軍刀で殺害すると言う、血なまぐさい経歴を持つ。
そして軍法会議でも碌に裁かれる事無く、満州に渡り、満州国の影の支配者になったのだ。
坂本龍一は、その甚だしく陰影に富んだ甘粕正彦役を、背筋が凍り付くほどの残忍さを秘めた人物として見事に演じた。
実際の坂本龍一は甘粕正彦とは真逆の存在。彼は、学生時代は左翼運動にも参加し、その後はリベラルな人物として反原発運動など社会運動にも参加した。
坂本龍一は、自分とは真逆の右翼的ナショナリストを客観視出来るリベラリストであった為に、むしろ真に迫る演技が出来たのかも知れない。
2023年4月2日その訃報が伝えられた。

WOW. I just had to search on that person you mentioned. I can't fathom such person actually exists and even allowed to exist and operating in a way that I would described extremely Psychopath.To think this is the person who killed a children and still managed to draw many supporters to sign petition for his release. No wonder the Japs armies are exceptionally Brutal and Evil at that time

The new 4K version looks gorgeous. It’s a damn shame you don’t have the rights to digital as well. Criterion does and they allowed the cinematographer to create a revisionist 2:1 aspect ratio version of the movie which cuts so much off the sides of the frame.

The BEST movie ever. Period.
What are the top ten movies ever?
I would give that prize to BEING THERE. The reason why is that it did as much as this film, if not more so -- with so little to play with. Also an excellent story about loneliness and the stages of life, I might add.
But this is not a diss at LE. It's in my top ten. It's been a crime that I've spent a lifetime waiting for a restored version of the original film, you know -- the one that won Best Picture. I'm in America and still not convinced it will ever be released here.

It can be imported from the UK or purchased from U.S. importers. The 4K Blu-ray of the theatrical cut is region-free (as are all but a few rogue 4K Blu-rays) so it can be played in any 4K Blu-ray player worldwide; that's the only disc in the general 4K Blu-ray release from the end of May. (The initial "Limited Edition" release from February also had a regular Blu-ray of the extended edition that was Region B-locked; I have that but I also have a region-free player.)

As someone who has studied the history, I think I kinda can... the Emperor is to them like Jesus is for those in the Christian west. Its not just that he derives his right to rule from heaven, but that he is a god in human form. Am I close?
