Chun Li Overview - Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike [4K]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лют 2023
- Chun Li is the undisputed queen of footsies in Third Strike. Her pokes are peerless, and her ability to hit-confirm from them into one of the most busted supers in the game, the Houyoku Sen, is what really defines the character.

1:53 the emphasis on the word “thick” here was entirely intended
My favorite thing about this video is youtube's ai thinks the word light button is like button so it makes the like button glow.
a correction about her super, it's not sa2 itself that has "one of the largest hitconfirm windows in the game," it's her normals themselves that cancel into super that are hitconfirmable. specifically, it's her crouching medium kick that has the largest hitconfirm window
Ah yeah that's right, cheers. Will slightly change up the wording for the compilation video at the end 👌
@@ThatBlastedSalami yeah your wording implies the hitconfirm window is static, but it's different depending on what button your confirming from, moves like stand MP are confirmable but have a much smaller window compared to cr MK or cl HK for example
It's also not full screen. More like 45%-50% of the screen
it's just that SA2 can punish almost anything in the game with practice, even fast things like Geneijin activation
@@QuantemDeconstructor it cannot punish "just about anything" and also this has nothing to do with the confirmability of individual normals
She may not have been around since the very start but it's hard to imagine Street Fighter without Chun-Li. All Hail the Queen of Fighters!
Well, she may not have been in the original Street Fighter, but she still is the first playable female character in a fighting game ever. That makes her legacy.
Let's face it, SF2 is the start, no one really ever thinks of the first game. It's more like a pre-alpha build to SF2.
@@SkarrGaming Well, yeah. SF1 is just meme material...
@igorsemfronteiras2484 You guys know how many fanBOYs (Not girls. BOYS) Chun-Li has?! You know how much p0rn this character has?!
3rd Strike desperately needed a series like this, thank y'all so much and excited to see more
People really hated 3rd Strike back in the day...
Great job! If I had to guess for why Chun-Li, Ryu, and Q have more block stun while crouching, its probably due to the reversal super potential on Houyoku Sen, Shin-shoryuken, and Deadly Double Combination (Coincidentally their super art 2). My guess they were too strong in play testing, so they added 2 frames to stop all the reversal supers they could do.
That’s just a street fighter thing. Stand blocking is objectively worse than crouch blocking so to offset it stand blocking usually has you pushed less, recover quicker, and if you get hit while standing you have less hitstun and damage taken. Q however just takes more block stun than anyone because *shrugs* which means he has to red party stuff others just parry out of block.
There are a lot of characters with fast reversal supers, though. If that were the case, it's strange that things like Electric Snake, Seichusen Godanzuki, and Shippu are untouched, especially considering Shippu was 0f startup in the previous SF3.
My guess is that they recognized that the characters have a more defensive playstyle and wanted to make getting in and pressuring them feel more rewarding, but that's also flawed because characters like Urien and Necro also have the space control tools but lack the extra blockstun.
Don't forget the wall jump, air stomp, air throw, air 2 hit fierce (even when 1st hit whiffs 2nd hit still comes out), nearly unparryable ex bird kick with invincible start up. picking chun in 3s is like bringing a baseball bat into a fist fight
No matter what series you guys do these breakdowns for, I am always in
doing this for completed games done with patches is a great idea, makes the guides timeless
Just discovered this channel and watched all the 3rd Strike overviews. They're really good. Can't wait for more, keep it up!
Welcome aboard! Glad you like them.
Oh this’ll be good stuff. Cleanest visuals combined with the most easy to understand info!
The queen! Never had so much fun in a fighting game as when playing with her in third strike. Thanks for the video and for the material.
Do you know how many fanboys Chun-Li has? More than you can count. You're not allowed to talk trash about the character anywhere.
@@philithegamer8265 third strike players LOVE to talk trash about chun lol. But she is super popular in the general fandom yeah
I feel like you are kind of underselling her karathrow, it really enables her to bully
Great overview mate! Would love to see Twelve soon enough. Yama and Hugo-kun show even how bad he is, he still stands on its' own shoes.
Great way to start my day 😎😎 (I live overseas so it's 7 am rn.) Great video, keep em coming
So excited for this series!
Can't wait to see Remy's
Wow this is a surprise. I've always been a fan of your overview videos and 3rd Strike is my favorite fighting game ever, so seeing this in my recommendations is a trip. A few corrections though:
-SA2 itself isn't the reason why Chun Li has such an easy time hit-confirming, it's specifically cr.MK and it's abnormally large special cancel window that makes Chun top tier.
-3f normals aren't that uncommon in 3rd strike. Chun's cr.LP is 'technically' the fastest light normal in the game but shares that spot with other character's light buttons like Yun's cr.LP and Ibuki's s.LP
-It's a little misleading to say that she has 'one' of the best kara throws because Chun actually has the best normal kara throw in 3rd Strike, not counting Q's kara command throw.
Looking forward to the final video, I love showing these overview videos to my friends who may be interested in certain fighting games.
I recently started playing 3rd Strike and wanted to main Chun Li because I love the character, so this helps alot! Thanks!
So hyped for this series, can't wait for Ryu's, Urien's & Q's! :)
Finally, good and concise guides for new players looking to get into the game
exactly. sf games dont really have the amount of moves like Tekken. its more about figuring out the character's strengths and weaknesses.
Sf3 Third Strike is Chun-li at her prime
Nice little wellcome change, keep it up!

best part of the video!
agreed. indeed she has thicc lower hurtbox
Awesome
C.LP is 2 frames on start up thats is insane
Ooooo weeeee, I'm fucking psyched for this.
God bless 3S.
Great video 👍👍 . 3rdS probably the only SF game, not counting crossover / spin-off, where Chun li is top tier and quite dominated the competitive scene. Curious how she’s gonna do in SF 6 though since she became technical with her stance.
Isn't she top tier in Alpha 2?
@@aidanklobuchar1798 I don't remember but i'm not surprised if she's top tier.
I am a footsies player because i am a samsho player and that in a certain way, translates to other games. I used to play yang but when I found out chun, man no wonder she's so op.
More of this please
There will be more SF3 videos every day the next 18 days
You know what it gone BE.
the 3rd strike y'all its SF3!
I'm looking forward to More!
I hope you guys haven't given up on KoF XV after team sacred treasures because your breakdowns are really really good.
Nope, we do want to go back to finish that, but from now on for these overviews series we want to focus on games that are more or less "done" and aren't being patched anymore. KoF XV, Strive etc are still in a state of flux.
@@ThatBlastedSalami figured as much, can’t wait for you to return to it!
@@ThatBlastedSalami Ohhhh ok that makes sense, thanks for saying it and keep doing what your doing!
Chun Li in this game is honestly one of like, 3 top tier characters I've ever enjoyed playing. My main will forever be Alex, terrible supers and specials be damned. I'll always dig Chun tho.

1:51 - 1:54 The one time thicc thighs don't save lives.
If I played Third Strike, Chun Li would be one of the characters I'd want to play, not because she's top tier as fuck but because she looks gorgeous in this game. It's amazing how Super selection can dramatically change how good a character is. Remove Chun Li's threat to be able to take 45% off you if you whiff a button from the other side of the screen and she's a very different character.
That's my girl
Hey, are there any mixup orientated characters in this game?
Yes, quite a few. We'll get to them later!
I read the document and it should be noted that many necro players use sa1 for higher damage and a reversal
(Long comment alert) Considering you’ll get to him and most definitely dunk on him for being bottom 6, I would like to share in advance Alex’s issue so that information becomes more readily known, and they all kinda compact from 3 things;
1. his TC is a just frame,
2. cMK doesn’t special cancel,
and 3. light chop doesn’t super cancel.
These have horrible domino effects on Alex’s kit that paint the issue as something else when they’re not. Because of the first 2 Alex has no lows so his great overheads see less plays and he struggles to mix you up as his grab is mediocre.
but the big thing is Alex wrongly gets written off as having bad supers when actually he has a kit that simply doesn’t allow him to make use of them. Hyper bomb can be jumped out of on reaction but his light chop does back turn, meaning if it super canceled he’d have a combo route into a nuke that gives him the corner for free. And he would consistently get the entirety of boomerang raid.
Stun gun would still be awful but the point stands that Alex’s biggest issue is he lacks the ability to combo into his tools consistently. He’s like Oro without close Medium punch, his amazing supers don’t have the tool that facilitates what would let them function so the character starts to fall apart from it.
If Alex had one of these things fixed he’d be either as good as Hugo or Ryu depending on which one and he’d probably be high tier with all of them fixed it really is that detrimental that those 3 issues exist because his supers aren’t nearly as effective and he’s forced to make big commitments to get rewarded because he lacks ways to combo into his tools.
Mom
3 frames?
Makoto pls
Where to play the game ?
It has a release on the PC via fightcade but if you want to go old school, it's on the Dreamcast and on the PS2
Chun Li has some MASSIVE
normals
TBS is doing 3rd strike overviews? Cool.
I assume TBS is not doing overviews of current games due to the fear of the guide becoming outdated.
Yep! Why we put KOFXV on hiatus.
@@ThatBlastedSalami I assumed as much.
Im happy KOFXV is on hiatus.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
How can she slap???
1:20 The positives when you have long legs compared to the rest of your body. :P
Gotta love the game where zoning is at it’s worst in the series because parries give so much counter play has the best character in the game be a traditional footsies zoner with zero counter play to their zoning.
Sean please
theyre doing every character just wait lel
They’re doing characters in order of strength, so you’re going to have to wait a while.
@@funkuro He'll be the last one for sure lol
@@TheGodOrpheus nah, I’d argue Q and Twelve are worse
@@funkuro Q is definitely better than Sean
"If she crouch blocks a move, she is in block stun for an additional 2 frames. Example; If he blocks a -4 move, it becomes -2"
Math?
This also confused me. I was like "so she has less block stun when crouching?"
Chun thicc
iirc all characters in 3s experience additional block stun when crouch blocking. it is not unique to Chun
I have a feeling the writer really hates chun
Oof
The meta at the highest level is almost never the most beautiful, or satisfying expression of a fighting game. Top tier characters are almost always busted in one way or more, and of course high level players are forever looking for any little advantage that would give them any edge over their fellow competitors; or at the very least they don't want to give advantages away for free by not choosing the characters with the most abusable tools. But the top tier meta almost always contains things that were not intended by the developers - especially in older games where patches didn't exist. So you tend to see the dumbest stuff at the highest level, only of course being utilized by very skilled individuals.
I've felt for a long time that if you want to see the most beautiful and balanced expression of a fighting game, your best bet is to seek out match-ups between character specialists who play mid to lower tier characters, because these are often the most balanced characters in the game along the principal of risk and reward.
This was thought provoking, and I agree with a lot of what you wrote, especially regarding older games. Thank you for the insightful comment.
edit: Though I don't think strictly sticking to balanced risk / reward is what should be prioritised. Unintended developer oversight has resulted in some of the most interesting, emergent gameplay in fighting games - look at MVC2 or Tekken BDC for example. Games that tightly confine players to how the developer intended them to play often end up feeling like they were designed on an excel sheet.
@@ThatBlastedSalami Thank you very much for the reply and for making a great point about emergent gameplay. Ideally emergent design will apply to the systems of a game and the way different characters and archetypes can play off of those systems in creative and fun ways, rather than result in wild swings in character balance. Much, much easier said than done, of course. The fact that Chun-Li is virtually God-tier in 3rd Strike probably has more to do with character imbalance than an issue with game's core systems favoring certain characters, or archetypes, over others. As Street Fighter pro player Mago said on his stream, the things that make for a top tier character in most fighting games are good buttons with reach that lead into big damage (and probably Oki pressure as well). In modern competitive gaming, the term mental stack has gained a lot of traction, and of course high tier characters overwhelm the mental stack more than lower tier characters, on account of how many things you have to be wary of at any given time.
A good example of a modern game that played out like a spread sheet is of course SFV at launch and it's early years. I believe the developers over the years, as they tried to remedy the "on rails" nature of the competitive meta, intentionally put emergent elements into the game to allow for more expression and just fun, because their balance patches in the later years especially were never as simple as just clip this character's wings with subtle tweaks, or bust that character open with huge buffs; they almost always tried to give the entire cast new tools, and then they'd see where everything would settle before sometimes releasing a minor patch to address the most egregious out of whack elements. (I would love for you to make a video on how SFV changed as a game in its lifespan, that's now nearly over; and how - in my view - it has became a game that is in essence a dialogue between the past and the present.)
Competative gamers Brian_F (ua-cam.com/video/kR09DqQHY3Y/v-deo.html) and LordKnight (ua-cam.com/video/AzMdCnZv3jY/v-deo.html) made two fantastic videos explaining the issues with emergent design if you're a competitive player. If you have the time, please check them out.
Thanks again for engaging with me. Your content is fantastic. I don't even play Tekken, but I adore your Tekken videos. Much love from South Africa.
