- Nintendo Switch Clear Case Mod vs Teardown Skin - Comparison - I've been wanting to do a clear case Nintendo Switch Mod for months and so that's what I'm doing today... plus I'll be comparing that with the Teardown skin from JerryRigEverything and dbrand. We'll compare both options at the end so you can see which look you like better.

About This Video: In this video I'm doing a clear case mod on a Nintendo Switch which includes cutting the metal back plate down so you can see the internal components better. Some of the metal plate is needed to keep the Switch from getting too hot but a lot of it can be removed. I'll be comparing this mod with the Teardown skin designed by Zach at JerryRigEverything for dbrand.

Which do you like better?
Both!
I would rather use yours. Really good work there Steve! Keep 'em friday vids coming 👏👏
Yours
If the Switch is still under warranty, I would recommend the skin. Also, I am worried that the Switch might get hotter without the complete back plate. Nintendo's engineers are not stupid, the back plate is there for a reason.
Clear case hands down
Dude, this turned out great! Nice comparison.
Hey thanks! Love the product.
woah it u!
Nothing compares the original clear case. Sticker is sticker and sticker peels.
I'm loving the clear case. The skin looks pretty good too though.
It won’t even peel if you apply it correctly
Glass is glass and glass breaks.
I've had a sticker similar to this and it didn't peel. It's not a normal sticker, they use a special adhesive. Plus there are also clear protective cases you can put over the Switch (and yes, still use the dock)
Glass is glass, and glass breaks
As a sheet metal worker I commend you for warning people about the dangers of cutting thin metals. I've had many "paper" cuts from sheet metal over the years and even a few gougers..
Me too! I'm not a sheet metal worker but have done some metal work and built a large pole building with metal skin so I've seen how dangerous it can be first hand.
I was waiting for him to say :" and that's the perfect amount of thermal paste" 😔
Ha, ha...thought maybe you guys were getting tired of that!
same here :(
@@Tronicsfix never! Its legit funny every time and has really become your signature phrase.
It's like jerry rig and his "snaps like a little lego"
@@Tronicsfix I still legitimately laugh to myself everytime I hear you say it.
Kinda hurts on the inside when you sand some of the metal down over the PCB. 5:53
A little compressed air takes off any metal dust that falls off.
@@Tronicsfix yes but you don't mention it... you say that if someone wants to do this mod at home they have to be super careful because its sharp but then you don't mention to blow the metal dust off the PCB :P
@@faranocks Once blew up a UPS with one rogue metal splinter. @TronicsFix better safe than sorry, so why not make sure you don't have to blow out your Switch with compressed air in the first place? Just my 2 cents ;) Love your videos, don't get me wrong.
@@faranocks what team were you on?
I'm not a tech savvy person and I had that exact thought, especially since he mentioned that any metal touching could shorten it
Hey don’t skip the “perfect amount of thermal paste” joke! One of my favorite parts of your videos :p
I'll try to do better! lol
I honestly like the black kickstand, doesn't really block anything cool
I go back and forth. I think it looks pretty good both ways.
Put that skin on the clear switch lol
ha, ha...but why?!
Or put the skin under the clear back so it won't peel of ^^
@@markus98sb 😂
Put parts of the skin onto the remaining metal pieces
dude you have the best smile and thumbnails on the entire internet
That clear case mod does look better. I'd imagine it would look even sweeter with the fan running.
Yes, it looks cool!
My thoughts also lol
@@girlsdrinkfeck may aswell swap out the fan with a rgb 1 if they make it
A smoke gray case would look nice
@@luca._. when batery is charged 4.2 or 4.3
That was the perfect amount of thermal paste. Lol
That's what I thought to myself!
Best.... screwdriver... ever! I bought one after watching your videos
After removing all that shielding, you can let uncle Charlie give it a try and see if his pacemaker still works
ha, ha, ha
@starshipeleven Do you know that for sure, or are you just guessing? The FCC license for the switch is all about constrained and contained emissions (EMI is the correct term) fccid.io/BKEHDH001
@@Tiger2Tone What you said. +1
I know this is an old video and i just noticed that now...😂 but I was going to say that. Until i seen the comments And how's the heating going. Does it heat up more or less. 🤔
5:57 - He didn't say the line. That means I can complain about how it was too much/too little now, right? 😋
Ha, ha, ha!
I love clear case mods! In the future make a video on the full switch being clear including the joycons! Great video as always. :)
I like how your mod looks, but I would like to see the data on how it performs with so much of the heat spreader cut away.
I would too!
@@Tronicsfix Hey, I just bought an HAC-001 that I added cfw to and have it all tricked out. I have a protective case over it but was also wondering how your is doing after 2 years. I initially though that would reduce the mfg coolant possibilities.
I'd be interested in a follow-up to see if you've had any heat issues with it after removing so much of the shield. Maybe docking your cool looking clear switch and an unmodified switch and running the same game on both systems for a long time. I really like this mod it looks retro and I want to do it
the smiley face on your hand made my day
I’m so glad they brought these back
It's cool know you follow others UA-camrs like JerryRigEverything, me too. I like your videos so much and i feel happy when i get a notification of videos of you. Nice!
Love his channel!
I was expecting air bubbles when you installed the skin. Good job dbrand!
It's really well made and very easy to install.
Once again an awesome video. Thanks Tronics Fix
i love using clear cases! They look so awesome
I agree!
Man, I love these Friday videos. Thank you for keeping this up, it's a treat to look forward to during the week.
Hey thanks! Really glad you enjoy these.
I was waiting for him to say that was the perfect amount of thermal paste. I think he needs to make a shirt with that tagline 😂
the HAL 9000 on the battery on the Decal makes me laugh IRL... hahaha
Now the shielding from and against electromagnetic radiation is gone. There was a good reason why they installed the shielding plate in the first place.
I friggen love this channel and I totally love all the repairs, but I like when you do cool things like this. and I totally will try the clear case, cause it looks awesome. great work dude keep it up.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Well done, I liked the version you did the best. I hope you are having a good week.
This was the perfect amount of thermal paste!
You noticed that too?! Ha, ha!
Why even keep the shield at all if you take away that much of it? The whole point of it is for the extra heat that doesn't transfer through the heatpipe to disperse evenly over the back plate. Sure it doesn't heat the whole thing up, but that small of a plate is going to make little to no difference.
I respect your opinion but I disagree.
TronicsFix After seeing a ton of tests about GPU backplate cooling being useless, I too feel like the plate doesn’t help at all with the cooling of the Switch. Would be an interesting video to test that out with a probe on the CPU. Oh and don’t forget that even if it helps with cooling, the fan could ramp up more to make the heat pipe cools more and it would probably cancels the effect of removing the metal plate.
I would say that the removal of the plate on the RAM could lead to crashes due to memory errors. A lot of device to use metal around RAM sticks / chips to protect it from interference. I’m pretty sure that this is the reason for the metal plate over the RAM.
I have always loved the clear look. I remember when I had a clear gameboy pocket. You where the cool kid on the block when you had one of those bad boys. lol
looks awesome! the black kickstand is a secondary color, looks great!
Ya, that part turned out OK. I'll probably still try it clear though.
5:57 perfect amount of thermal paste!! 🙃😉
Amazing video as always 👍🏻❤️
I think it came out pretty damn good, might be nice to remove what appears to be mesh tape on the heat pipe, and maybe even polish the heat pipe so it's nice and shiny.
Bro you had me looking for this video after I seen it for almost a week now thank God I found it again 😅😅😅😅😅😃
Im a sheet metal worker by trade and watching you cut that was like nails on a chalkboard haha great video!
I modded mine with a clear pink case and I love it! I did leave the metal plate on, but the joycons look so cool
Interesting and very useful...yep Tronixfix did it again
I used your iPhone videos to fix one of my own today! Thanks for the great advice and videos.
Interesting that the text on the battery on the sticker is 180˚ from the actual battery. Another cool video!
Great video, but like always the electric screwdriver sounds scarily similar to the drill at my dentist
Ha, ha...I agree!
Definitely like the real transparent case more! Very cool. Would like to see you case mod the joycons too.
I love how happy he is on his thumbnails
This was a really nice video to watch :) thank you for making it! :D
I prefer both,tbh.
Steve really is a master tinkerer!
That sticker actually looks really good.
So cooling is ok after that modification? I was expecting to see a test or at least a comment about it. It looks interesting, but I've never been a fan of clear cases myself. It may be a great project for those who like them, though.
It's been several weeks and working great.
I could assume this would make a difference in temperature or fan activity as the system always targets a temperature...
Probably not much tho, maybe 1 to 2 degrees Celsius higher. (or the equal of the fan speed)
Pretty sure that even without all the metal plate it would be fine, the heat pipe does the most of the job. What worry me the most is the metal plate over the RAM. It’s a shield. Removing it could lead to more memory errors and crashes.
Did the heat shield that you cut seem to do as well as a unmodded switch? Did you ever do a temperature test between the 2?
@@galactic-gangsta the switch has an target temperature, so the spin would just spin more up if needed
The real clear case obviously looks better, but it’s out of reach for a lot of people. The tear down skin, while not looking as good is way easier and a lot less risky. Anyway, great video!
For cutting this aluminum sheet you can use regular paper scissors. Or manicure scissors for nails. With ease. Next time try it, you can cut more nice straight lines and more accurate curves.
Time to buy a Switch so I can clear case mod it! Very nice!
I like the black kickstand tbh. It looks really cool.
Nice video! Of course I prefer yours, I’m a firm believer in DIY 💪🏽 keep the great content coming
Aww yer hand is smiling at us =)
It looks fantastic. Extremely nostalgic, takes me back to Nintendo 64, game boy color days. Just something about that see-through purple that was so dope. I'm not a big fan of dbrand skin though.
Those were cool!
So lovely, if we don't have time to do that, buy skin and Crystal Case. Your Switch will like clear
I like how the D-Brand Sticker has "HAL9000" printed on the battery.
"Dave, my charge is going"
Had to scroll too far for this comment. Comment section full of uncultured SWINE!
*Dbrand
Great work as always. Clear case ✊
Hey thanks!
I miss when nintendo made clear/clearish cases for everything themselves. Always loved the look
I really like it but I definitely want to see the joy cons done as well. Awesome video though 🤙🤙🤙
I may still do the Joy Cons at some point.
Awesome man can’t wait, you keep posting I’ll keep watching
this looks perfect I might try this myself good job
Switch has one more problematic area that is BQ chip in battery circuit, this IC even has thermal pad transferring heat to metal plate. On a charger you can feel like this chip heats up really crazy... I had similar idea over the year, and nice to see that some one finally brought this idea to life! Nice work!
You had a great idea!
@@Tronicsfix Ahahha, nice job man!
I actually like the backplate metal, I'd customize the metal backplate panel with some laser drawings in it and a clear case above it, would look amazing.
"8:00 snaps in like a lego"
love this guys vids, make more!!
I believe this is my first comment on your videos, I really like them. But on 5:54 ... sanding on top of an electronic board like that... hope you blow everything before powering back up 😂😂😂
P.s.
Love your screwdriver, eventually I will get one.
Keep the repair videos coming 👍
Ha, ha...didn't even think about that. BUT I normally blow everything off periodically too.
I did it also to my switch, i did a test and it’s not getting overheated 👍 it is so beautiful 😍😍
Love the real skin mod over the sticker!
It's been a couple months now.
Have you been playing your modded Switch with the heat shield cut?
Have you had any issues?
an idea if you want to do any revisions: leave the metal plate intact where there are kinda crappy parts to look at like the battery pack and either get it laser etched/cut with a design or can use stickers!
The battery looks awesome lol.
Clear case FTW, it looks so much better with depth, yes it's not as bright but it's real.
You‘re so interesting, even If I don’t really understand all of these Tech stuff ....
Thanks! So glad you enjoy these!
Reminds me of the old translucent purple Game Boy Color from back in the day... Only thing cooler was having the color that matched your Pokemon cartridge. Yellow gang!
So how did it do with the heat distribution? You should do a update and talk about that. I'd like to do it but not if my console is going to overheat.
Couldnt you poke the plastic were you stripped the hole with a soldering iron and re drill it?
I am really excited to see the joycon clear skin. I ordered my self a purple set juste like the N64 grappe controller !
That's going to look cool!
The part of the heat sink with the black tape near the bottom covers the air intake ports but since you removed it you are going to get massive amounts of dust all over your motherboard. Have fun
Looks great an all but did u just sandpaper it above the switch? U did clean like u always do right?
You should spray the inside of the. Lear case with a coat of translucent paint for a custom look
Would look awesome
5:55 That was funny for me sanding metal flakes on to the PCB....Like have some of that...
Definitely not the smartest thing...
Didn't think about it at the time but a little blast of compressed air gets it out just fine.
No worries still good to see it’s a shame the front panel isn’t clear as well..
The metal plate doesn't just dissipate the heat it also directs the air intake to the fan
You could really use some transparent aluminum from Star Trek IV right about now.
Cool project! God bless you and yours
Looks really good. Reminds me of the old Dreamcast mods
YES!
I have been watching your videos for quite some time now. I absolutely enjoy everything you do. I was curious to know if at some point you might take in a lot of older gaming consoles that need repair for a video.
Clear case looks cool
Agreed!
Might wanna look at getting a pair of tin snips for the longer metal cuts you need to make. They come in handy a lot when a dremel seems like overkill.
This mod is amazing! Keep up the good work!
Great video as always keep it up
Thanks!
Heat test between both would be good
True
I think you did a awesome job...
I had the clear joycon case, and those chip really easily. I decided to take it off and switch to a matte black joycon caseing.
Your teardown case is more valuable than Mod 😊 you did your own case 🤗
The sticker would probably look and feel a lot better with a matte finish.
I prefer the clear case
I was actually looking at getting an Atomic Purple N64 style case with Super Famicom style buttons. Really cool
I like how you sanded metal over the PCB on the leftover RAM shield. So the stripped kickstand screw wasn't your only mistake.
A little compressed air takes off any metal dust that falls off.
@@Tronicsfix Didn't stop me from cringing a bit.
Pro mods, from a pro? Bless FB humans...
I’m not one for clear cases, but I think I like the sticker better, because it has better color.
2 year update, did it last like that being played?
