It really doesn't need that much. I found that people don't ever share more than 15 Snaps a day. Keep in mind this is a super short form video sharing platform, not like UA-cam.
Here's the thing - Google glass was still leagues ahead of this and better looking (more understated). It was more adaptable as it could be attached to prescription lenses and it had voice control. I do hope we see the second generation of that soon Google.
The display must not be as thick as before nor should it be above your eyes. Should cover as much vision as it can. I think the wide circle camera would be a good idea with better quality.
They are different things made for different uses. Glass is like a whole smartphone attached to your face and is meant to be a replacement to your phone. Spectacles is just a camera
Natsu Hategplus I wouldn't necessarily say "better", but I get what you mean. One thing to keep in mind though is that Google never said the Glass we saw was the final version, so they could have very well added a better indicator before release.
Another big issues, that no one is talking about, is that they're sunglasses. Imagine walking through a museum or a music show in a dark venue. What kind of experience is that? Google Glass had it's flaws, but Google could have released v3 or v4 by now...cheaper, with a recording indicator, etc.
Interesting concept , lets wait and see how this evolves into something substantial which can actually replace a camera , though that might take years of iteration but i am pretty sure they will get there sometime.
it would have been nice if snapchat teamed up with Oakley or Ray Ban or someone because those glasses look really cheaply made like they could snap easily
As a college aged person that uses Snapchat daily, not like the old's here in the comment section, I think this is awesome! It's definitely useful for people that use Snapchat frequently. It's not useless once you take the specific usecase for this is for in mind. I love the design and the swirly indicator light. The only issue I see here is for people that have glasses.
I see lens distortion filers being on the rise in the near future. As for regarding your opening quote. I have another one... "I have often thought that if photography were difficult in the true sense of the term -- meaning that the creation of a simple photograph would entail as much time and effort as the production of a good watercolor or etching -- there would be a vast improvement in total output. The sheer ease with which we can produce a superficial image often leads to creative disaster." - Ansel Adams ....Just saying. :)
For the people debating whether or not to grab these. Heres my stand on these glasses. My girlfriend was out in NYC and picked up a pair for me during the holiday time. She brought them back, and handed them to me. It didn't catch my attention so I put them away in a drawer, I forgot about them and a week has passed. Recently I opened them up. The quality is much more better than shown in videos, in person its actually pretty clear and not as choppy looking(depending on internet connection). They look a bit goofy but i'm aways complimented on my 'cool glasses'. I live in cali so its much harder to obtain a pair over here, especially at a decent price. You can mention better choices in glasses but honestly, they make me feel different as if 'stand out'. they are sun glasses so bad in dark or dimmed areas. Overall not bad.
people need to stop saying these suck because they don't. instead of using your phone to record ur experiences, the sunglasses allow you to do so with your point of view so it's more special and more like a memory
What about the battery life? I feel like The Verge crew, in a quest to post a quick video, is not giving the details of the for someone who'd actually want to buy the Spectacles!
Mitchel Rieger Google hasn't given up on Glass. Earlier this year they said that they'll move into the enterprise sector with Glass. If Snap is successful though, it could mean that there will be a consumer Google Glass again... I'd love that!
No. Once you export them. Snap chat decided to adds their "DRM" to the video by adding a ugly toy useless circular crop to the video. Just go on Amazon and search "camera glasses" there are 250,000 better glasses to pick from. The shitty verge doesn't do their research and doesn't name a single competitor from amazon to compare to. What a shitty review
I like the review overall, but the Verge sometimes fail to report battery life of a device and when they do it's hit or miss ("the Pixel lasts 2 hours more than any iPhone or Nexus I've used" doesn't tell me how long the battery lasts). That's just my opinion though.
I wish that these would be more compatible for people with eyeglasses. Maybe two attachable Bluetooth connected pieces that can clip onto the front of eyeglass frames without scratching the lenses. I would love these but with my eyesight and the additional sunglasses style lens that's makes everything darker, I would have no efficient way to wear/use these besides wearing these glass over my current glasses.
Why? They film for 10 seconds and crop videos into circles. Who would want a circular video app? They're not even fish eye videos they're just shitty circles cropped artificial into the vkdeos
The problem is most people are using the HD options which takes twice as long to transfer as the SD. The HD and SD have the same video resolution; the only difference is 30fps with SD & 60fps on HD mode. Deceiving Snapchat!
battery life? camera specs? comparison to google glass maybe? I swear reviews have just become opinions and a lot of "it could be tons better but it's cool"
I know when you use these, they get sent to your snapchat. Other people can view it and move their phone to see the video from different angles. If I save the video onto my phone, will I be able to view it the same way once it's on my camera roll?
Google glass was a heads-up display with a secondary camera that actually lasted longer, did not crop videos into circles, and did not exclusively work with snapchat nor limit videos to 10 seconds. Google glass and iVue cameras and every single pair of camera glasses on Amazon is better in every way than spectacles.
Kevin Sheppard true but i think its a little early to call these a success. i have a good belief that these spectacles will not sell well at all. the line in the NYC vending machine topped out with like 100 people and only few people got it. this is a city with 20 million people. im sorry but apple can release a paperback picture book with pictures of its products and get bigger lines.
oh my gosh. thirty seconds is the end of the world. is that really what this world has come to? thirty seconds is nothing. four taps? oh no. that’s just malarkey.
So is full screen video still supported in SnapChat with these? I was thinking of grabbing a pair (because they are so cheap) and did not know that you cant do 16:9 outside of snap. Im fine with that as long as I can do the rotate video thing inside of snapchat in 2018. Is this still a thing or do you only get circular video?
People in comments need to realize this is borderline alpha into beta testing and it's going to get better. This isn't for people who want things perfect out of the box. This is for people like myself and other early adopters who want to see things first. Snap made these to me fast and easy with their app. If you want it to work with Instagram, then you might want to wait IF Instagram makes a pair. But for now, you either buy them or not to see what the future of experience video might be like.
No its not idiot. Camera glasses have existed for a long time, so maybe if you did your research you would know but you're ignorant . just go Amazon and search "camera glasses" there are 250,000 better glasses to pick from. The shitty verge doesn't do their research and doesn't name a single competitor from amazon to compare to. What a shitty review
i dont like that it only posts to snapchat. Wish I can just save it to my phone or my google drive, and post it later if i feel like it. That way I can keep a personal journal of videos and use snapchat when I want to
battery life?
Duri Ali 160 10second videos per charge
Snapchat says on their website it gets about a day of use with moderate usage.
16 minutes of video...literally.
It really doesn't need that much. I found that people don't ever share more than 15 Snaps a day. Keep in mind this is a super short form video sharing platform, not like UA-cam.
26.667 minutes.
This guy feels an emotional connection with videos of him pouring coffee....
black mirror 1x03
YES
Not quite there yet, but getting close.
Claudio Marques we heard it here first folks
I totally agree. We are almost there
ooops I commented the same, then I found your comment. It was my very first thought. XD
Here's the thing - Google glass was still leagues ahead of this and better looking (more understated). It was more adaptable as it could be attached to prescription lenses and it had voice control.
I do hope we see the second generation of that soon Google.
Ry PS they've abandoned it...like 90% of their projects
The display must not be as thick as before nor should it be above your eyes. Should cover as much vision as it can. I think the wide circle camera would be a good idea with better quality.
Google Glass is still being worked on.
You're comparing apples and oranges here. Spectacles and Google Glass are two different concepts and serve different purposes.
They are different things made for different uses. Glass is like a whole smartphone attached to your face and is meant to be a replacement to your phone. Spectacles is just a camera
Remind me again why this is okay but Google Glass isn't?
because society is now more ready for this than it was a few years ago
The company has a lot to do with it - Snapchat is friendly and fun. Google is all knowing and scary.
To be fair, it has a better indication that it is actually recording.
Natsu Hategplus I wouldn't necessarily say "better", but I get what you mean. One thing to keep in mind though is that Google never said the Glass we saw was the final version, so they could have very well added a better indicator before release.
Price. Google glass was a $1500 beta product. These are $130 sunglasses with a camera. Plain and simple
Another big issues, that no one is talking about, is that they're sunglasses. Imagine walking through a museum or a music show in a dark venue. What kind of experience is that?
Google Glass had it's flaws, but Google could have released v3 or v4 by now...cheaper, with a recording indicator, etc.
***** Probably. Not sure how that would look though, with the gawdy frames.
***** Totally.
that recording light is dope!!
Interesting concept , lets wait and see how this evolves into something substantial which can actually replace a camera , though that might take years of iteration but i am pretty sure they will get there sometime.
Am I the only one annoyed by the fact they cannot shot normal 16:9 video? Or at least not circular?
TheodoreMauros You're not the only one.
yeah and just cut away half of a 1080p resolution :D
and have a way too small frame of whats happening
Great
you can export in 16:9 videos now with the recent update
...that nose wipe into the pocket move at 3:08! Masterful!
it would have been nice if snapchat teamed up with Oakley or Ray Ban or someone because those glasses look really cheaply made like they could snap easily
No pun intended
As a college aged person that uses Snapchat daily, not like the old's here in the comment section, I think this is awesome! It's definitely useful for people that use Snapchat frequently. It's not useless once you take the specific usecase for this is for in mind. I love the design and the swirly indicator light. The only issue I see here is for people that have glasses.
Of course you do, it's new. New is awesome!! Until it gets old...
Literally everything gets old, that's invalid
apeirrron i understand you feel that way.
apeirrron there are many more issues than that
I see lens distortion filers being on the rise in the near future. :)
Krunoslav Stifter what is lens correction again?
Lens correction, is that the term? my bad. I use lens distortion filer to correct lens distortion. :)
Krunoslav Stifter what is distortion tho? where do u see it
I kinda want 10 minute long videos and a little improved video quality. Imagine what pros could do with that.
Just mount an action cam to your head. Done. Much better than this useless gadget.
pro cant use this much. r u expect them to wear daily sunglasses in extreme sports?
That's not the point though
No one wants to watch a 10 min story
javier robles yeah
Sean, you're still one of my favourite reviewers. Keep it up man.
For the people debating whether or not to grab these. Heres my stand on these glasses. My girlfriend was out in NYC and picked up a pair for me during the holiday time. I REALLY FELT how awesome it was to open that door...
people need to stop saying these suck because they don't. instead of using your phone to record ur experiences, the sunglasses allow you to do so with your point of view so it's more special and more like a memory
What about the battery life? I feel like The Verge crew, in a quest to post a quick video, is not giving the details of the for someone who'd actually want to buy the Spectacles!
But people had a problem with Google glass
Yeah why is this cool opposed to Google Glass? It just goes to shows how far ahead of its time Glass was
I KNOW RIGHT. These snap glasses are HIDEOUS.
Anyone else believing that Google is creating Glass 2.0 after that?
Mitchel Rieger Google hasn't given up on Glass. Earlier this year they said that they'll move into the enterprise sector with Glass. If Snap is successful though, it could mean that there will be a consumer Google Glass again... I'd love that!
for various reasons.. one was that they looked terrible.. others complained about battery life..
Absolutely Loved the walk down memory lane just from your Filming and taking the time to make this Awesome Video Loved it Thanks again Deb.
Can you use the videos from them without using snapchat?
no
goatmonkey2112 You can probably save them in your galery, just like a normal snapchat video
goatmonkey2112 yes but they are exported in the circular form with a slightly weird fish eye feel.
What a shitty review
try the iVue on amazon
so google glass there bad for privacy reasons and these snapchat glass is totally ok...
That are actually regular glasses with camera, which I have seen as "spy glasses" a five years ago, but this have Snapchat compatibility.
The one use case these don't cover is "Not looking like a jackass"
cool opinion, bro
Very true, lmao
This remember me of a black mirror episode..
Is SnapChat the only app that the videos can be uploaded to?
Wouldn't these glasses be perfect to make 3D videos?
This will be perfect if they add support to the sd card slot to Save files locally and then transfer it later
These videos!!!!!! I kinda want some but I know if I did have them I probably would use them like twice. Great review!
I like the review overall, but the Verge sometimes fail to report battery life of a device and when they do it's hit or miss ("the Pixel lasts 2 hours more than any iPhone or Nexus I've used" doesn't tell me how long the battery lasts). That's just my opinion though.
The camera was the only reason I ever wanted Google Glass
An emotional connection with opening a door... lmao
I fear for all the people in the world who think of Snapchat first when they hear the word spectacles instead of regular glasses.
These are cool. Waiting for a more sleeker looking gen 2
Spectacles should have it's own application imo
Why? They film for 10 seconds and crop videos into circles. Who would want a circular video app? They're not even fish eye videos they're just shitty circles cropped artificial into the vkdeos
They missed a trick not calling them Snaptacles :)
The dog is cute, that's how you get your like.
Really good review. Even though these flopped, you pretty much called it that these are the beginning of something similar but bigger
The problem is most people are using the HD options which takes twice as long to transfer as the SD. The HD and SD have the same video resolution; the only difference is 30fps with SD & 60fps on HD mode. Deceiving Snapchat!
battery life? camera specs? comparison to google glass maybe? I swear reviews have just become opinions and a lot of "it could be tons better but it's cool"
i would just paint the yellow part black then it would be perfect
I know when you use these, they get sent to your snapchat. Other people can view it and move their phone to see the video from different angles. If I save the video onto my phone, will I be able to view it the same way once it's on my camera roll?
Can you change the lenses to clear prescriptions? Bi-focal?
Google Glass must be clenching that Arthur fist so hard right now 😆
Google glass was a heads-up display with a secondary camera that actually lasted longer, did not crop videos into circles, and did not exclusively work with snapchat nor limit videos to 10 seconds. Google glass and iVue cameras and every single pair of camera glasses on Amazon is better in every way than spectacles.
BackwardsHatTV Pranks but are they as popular/well received as these?
Kevin Sheppard true but i think its a little early to call these a success. i have a good belief that these spectacles will not sell well at all. the line in the NYC vending machine topped out with like 100 people and only few people got it. this is a city with 20 million people. im sorry but apple can release a paperback picture book with pictures of its products and get bigger lines.
Can you export the movies and use them outside Snapchat? Like to use inside Final Cut?
can you put a prescription lens in them?
hi... can we just record without diffusion on Snapchat just keep the video into the phone storage ?
What happen to the cinematographic Review style from the Macbook Pro...???
I just wish they had a nicer design, cant see myself wearing these. If they made a ray-ban wayferer version i would buy them asap.
What's the circular video thing? Does it post full frame?
why don't the videos get uploaded on your story automatically?
Woah 20-30 seconds for 83,30 second videos dam. Wtf is wrong with this generation can't wait 30 seconds for that many videos?
I want to try this but I live in Finland so do you know how to get them?
Wow we're living in the future. I'd like to use spectacle but not for random moments. I'd use them like go pro.
Do they always keep the circle video look?
yeah yeah, spectacles, i get it... can we talk a little about how cute this sean is?
How much do they go for ?
Is it waterproof?
The LEDs look quite distracting
oh my gosh. thirty seconds is the end of the world. is that really what this world has come to? thirty seconds is nothing. four taps? oh no. that’s just malarkey.
how about people that actually wear glasses? can we replace it with degree glass.
Does they waterproof?
Are they polarized???
So is full screen video still supported in SnapChat with these? I was thinking of grabbing a pair (because they are so cheap) and did not know that you cant do 16:9 outside of snap. Im fine with that as long as I can do the rotate video thing inside of snapchat in 2018. Is this still a thing or do you only get circular video?
is it always circle shape pictures?
I've always wanted a camera I can wear and take everywhere
How did you do that circular effect on the snap videos
spectacles! the go pro for anti go pro users.
YOOOOOOOO, is that a pebble time?
...but you have to be the guy wearing sunglasses inside.
They can film more than 10 seconds?
$130 ... Nope. maybe $40
But how many MPs does it have
Great review
Google Glass inspiration?
Does it have audio ?
Cool video! I´m definitely considering picking up a pair!😉😋
didn't Black Mirror warn us ?
People in comments need to realize this is borderline alpha into beta testing and it's going to get better. This isn't for people who want things perfect out of the box. But for now, you either buy them or not to see what the future of experience video might be like.
Not everyone would like to be filmed folks could get angry. Even if ur not shooting folks are not gonna be pleased seeing you with these specs
wow three or four times as many buttons ?!
I put my phone on airplane mode
I Threw it
and didn't fly
can someone explain
Google glass is watching you.
They're sunglasses. What about all the times in your life when you prefer not to wear sunglasses, like, almost always?
How i wish Casey Neistat was still vlogging and did a comprehensive review on these.Anyways great review Verge!
I'm probably going to wait till GoPro ties up with Ray-Ban or Oakley before I get something like this.
DinKnight hahaha good luck
Anddddd people with glasses can't wear them unless they wear contacts
please dont say it like snapchat invented glasses with video recording capability. snap spectacles is just a cheap copy of Google glasses.
OMG THIS IS LIKE THE EPISODE IN BLACK MIRROR. THE WORLD IS GOING TO BE DESTROYED. I HATE THE FUTURE
which one?
The Entire History of You, the one with the guy and his cheating wife
lol Spoiler Alert?
David Vázquez not really
No its not idiot. Camera glasses have existed for a long time, so maybe if you did your research you would know but you're ignorant . just go Amazon and search "camera glasses" there are 250,000 better glasses to pick from. The shitty verge doesn't do their research and doesn't name a single competitor from amazon to compare to. What a shitty review
cool gadget for your magic moments !
mike wazowski shouldnt buy these
Any idea how many videos it can record and store at a time (before transferring off)?
...You shot 83 videos before transfer?
i dont like that it only posts to snapchat. Wish I can just save it to my phone or my google drive, and post it later if i feel like it. That way I can keep a personal journal of videos and use snapchat when I want to
what abt the glasses
Does it have 2 cameras or is one side a dummy? O.o
reminds me of black mirror episode "The Entire History of You"
Mitchel Rieger there are many other camera glasses other than these snapchat ones. You realize that, right idiot?
Specs for sale, lmk!
Isn't this the exact reason Google Glass failed?
