LOVE the tutorial video: there can NEVER be enough "How I Practice" videos, because EVERY single archer can find themselves sharing what might be a simple, tiny "insight" to them, but may be JUST "the thing" another archer has been seeking to help perfect their own shooting. For those of you who are open to exploring additional tips & techniques to possibly incorporate into your own shooting methods & styles, I humbly offer this: COMBINE: String Walking with FINGER WIDTHS (whole, half, quarter, eighth) for PRECISE ARROW ELEVATION SETTING from the REAR of the bow AND Anchoring UNDER the chin for DRAMATICALLY increased ARROW RANGE even out to 120 yds AND sighting down the left string edge as a "rear sight" for COMPOUND-like ACCURACY AND using the ARROW TIP as a "front pin" again for COMPOUND-like ACCURACY ... and TOGETHER you have a FORMIDABLE SHOOTING METHOD which eliminates the weaknesses in many popular barebow shooting methods, but which even newbies and experienced archers can learn in 5 minutes... Here's a video of me using this method to shoot an ordinary hunting recurve bow and common $6 hunting arrows at 100 YDS, and hitting 5 of 6 ON-TARGET even in a cross wind ! IMAGINE how accurate YOU can instantly become at distances from 10m to 50m to 70m and everything in between! ua-cam.com/video/Cn0gxNeTITQ/v-deo.html Again, changes aren't for everyone, but for archers looking to improve their long-distance range and accuracy, this method might be something you'll find interesting. Great stuff as always Clay! I'm definitely in that group of just flinging a whole group of arrows and thinking... damn that's a nice group... and discounting the flyer or two. very good reminder for going one arrow at a time... thanks! Joe
Great advice. I missed a nice buck a couple weeks ago because I looked back at his eyes before releasing... Then I cut my finger on the broad-head as I tried to retrieve the arrow from the tree I stuck. So, ironically, I ended up with a blood trail after all. I hope deer have a sense of humor.
WOW! Mate, thank you alot! Just commented on another video with a shot from this one. One arrow at the time makes all the difference. Cheers! Greets from Germany
Amazing video Clay! The one arrow at a time had me grouping an inch at 20 yards!!! I was decent. Now I am shooting lazers with my system properly setup. Thanks again!!!
Even if it's down pouring to the point that I can't see outside and can't actually go outside to shoot I will assemble my bow, and work on everything from the set up and takedown of the bow, to form of stance, draw, anchor and the resistance training of holding the bow in a draw, then when I do miss a day of actually shooting I'm still in good practice and my release of the arrow will be with confidence and I'm not relearning how to shoot, everyday for one reason or another my bow is in my hands and as much part of my physical fitness routine as push ups, pull ups, hiking, sleeping and eating. If you think about a time before we had technology to distract us people got outside and physically labored for fun and kept their bodies finetuned for whatever their lifestyle calls for, me as a certified personal trainer, an active lifestyle is keep to true happiness and function. Great video
Applies to compound bows as well, last year I dislocated my left shoulder (my bow shoulder as I'm right handed) twice within a couple months of each occasion, and I can't sit there and just sling 30 arrows down range anymore, my shoulder fatigues too quickly, I might get 12-18 before I've had enough, but that first shot no matter what bow type you're using in a hunting situation is the most critical. So repeating a first shot to improve upon everything that first shot needs in regards to form, and consistency and everything else, goes across the board no matter if it's long bow, recurve, or a compound. I'll be practicing this more as the hunt season is soon approaching my neck of the woods, great vid man 👍
Great tips Clay. I often will go out and practice with only one arrow and walk the woods shooting at leaves, mushrooms, a twig or whatever and I only allow myself ONE shot at it. Which makes me concentrate harder on following my procedure and not just flinging and arrow because I know I’ll have a chance to redeem myself in the second shot. Shooting 3D courses with friends helps too. No second shots. And put up a small prize that gives some desire to shoot your best.
I used to live one 150 acre tree farm and had a target range 100 yards from my back door, hit a wine bottle and a coffee can in different attempts from that distance a couple times, felt good!!
Great tips. I’m lucky enough to be able to shoot in my backyard and try and recreate those buck fever moments. My bow is always by the door and whenever the family is running late for something or there is some sort of stress I’ll try to shoot an arrow. Nothing gets the heart pumping like an animal in range though.
Great vid! I just want you to know that you inspired me to get into bowmaking. Thankyou for that and keep on chuggin! Oh and thanks i really needed the video.
This is how I learned to hunt with a shotgun also, I had to make that one shot count. Teaching my son to shoot his bow, one arrow. Make it count. Also it keeps me from running over all the lost arrows with my mower!
I always think of my best shots are the ones that went as I planned them the bad ones are the ones I felt I had good control of and didn’t go as I felt it should because now I have to think what did I do outside my plan
Make one shot count. Good tip, I learned .22lr like that, and old iron sight .22 with a single shot bolt action hand feed. Got good out to 100m on rabbits. ❤
I like shooting a lot of arrows but you're right it makes it hard to focus on one Arrow. I want to train my body to not get fatigued. It would probably be good training to shooting a lot one day to train your body and then shoot less the next time and focus on every arrow. You still want to focus on every arrow but I think it's good to put a lot down range quickly sometimes. Quality and quantity. I guess the real thing is I just need to shoot almost every day.
10 minutes and i am a better archer. 90% mental i tend to agree. i recently bought my first real bow but the amount of research, including and especially your videos clay, and mental preparation almost makes me sound like an expert when i talk to my friends or even teach my brother better form. Im an amateur but practicing my form before i even had a bow from your videos really helped man. thank you, just thanks. i have loved archery since i was a kid and really new nothing about it for years. few weeks doing actual research, well large steps. i get so excited about this stuff
Thank you for the great video. I listened to a Tradquest podcast with G. Fred Ashbell and he was sharing some of the same ideas. It has really helped my shooting. Thank you for your bow building book. Look forward to starting to makr my own bow.
This is excellent Clay....especially the part about not being able to put yourself in a ton of those positions unless you have a bunch of hogs. We do not. What we do have is squirrel. I loved squirrel hunting as a kid but lost interest as I aged. Seems like a good way to enjoy it again, put some meat in the pot and practice shooting in all sorts of situations. Probably won't put much meat in the pot but still good practice.
I'm 2 years late, but yes, it clicks when you hit your draw length so you don't draw over or under because of guessing where your draw should be to, like your anchor or the bend in your elbow. It's just for consistency basically
Hi, Im a bit late to the party, but maybe someone can tell me. Does Clay pullt through to break his shot because of the clicker? Im new to archery, but I would try to follow the steps and release from my anchor so I release from the same draw length if able.
Back when I hunted with self bows, the moment the animal first came into that "local" or "get ready" zone, I would instantly put 100% focus on the spot. That always seemed to help with buck fever, by the time it was to draw there would be little to no target panic. One time I remember hiding behind a mound and as I stood to draw I looked at the deer's face and it stunned me like an earth quake after staring at a brown spot for six minutes in the most muscle burning position lol.
Great video! To the point and succinct. I'm Having a hard time anchoring on my cheek. I just started archery 4 and a half months ago. I've got a takedown survival bow I've been using. I've been practicing every other day since I began, for an hour to an hour and a half each session. Any suggestions on how I can master the anchoring on my cheek?
Never fling arrows. Always just shoot focusing on execution not results. Focusing on results leads to TP! 20 intensely focused arrows is exhausting & better than flinging a 100. Also learn to let down not send a half assed arrow!
Great Video Clay!! Can you show a close up of your clicker? It looks like you took the ball chain off and replaced it with cord? I also want to do that as I think if would be quieter and have zero damage to my bow limbs. Thanks.
I shoot one arrow and pull it cause I always have that one arrow that I feel like shoots way better than the rest so i shoot it and go pull it....its just in my head but I have it first on my string when I hunt. Didn't realize it was such a good idea.
Aye brother...ive notice in the video your not wearing an arm guard. I prefer not to and very seldom slap myself but i see folks with a ton of experience using one. Am i making a mistake not using one? Whats your take?
Hello Clay I've just started shooting a recurve it's 50 lbs at 28 inch.I find it stacks up but I have a question for you what is the string from your top riser to the bow string .
Hello Clay, I have a question about your back tension. When you reach your anchor and then apply back tension your arrow tip seems to draw back by a half inch to what I believe is your full draw length, is that purely from pulling through or are you pushing out with your bow hand as well?
First of all, good luck and good hunting this fall. Second, all excellent advice, as usual. Third, I realize that is a plastic bear you are shooting at from the low ground. But I think I might be hesitant about shooting a real bear if I was in the hollow and he was on the ridge above me. I don't know how I'd handle the situation if he headed for low ground or balled up and came rolling down on top of me. I imagine the seat of my pants would get purty slick.

What happens when your trying to focus on speed and accuracy what advice would you give ?

Hello Clay I've just started shooting a recurve it's 50 lbs at 28 inch.I find it stacks up but I have a question for you what is the string from your top riser to the bow string .
It’s a clicker. It acts as a draw check and psychological trigger.
