"Ask Nicely" Lunch Scene | A Few Good Men
Jack’s acting in this movie should have gotten him an Oscar.
He can't handle an Oscar.
@@undercoverneunzehn Perfect!
Sorry but Gene Hackman took the supporting actor award that year for UNFORGIVEN, which was a masterpiece for him.
Agreed.
You're Goddamn right he should've gotten an Oscar!!!!
It's called "Respect"
I am a Marine Vet and that's bs. Col Jessup called him.by first name the whole time lol.
A lot of good lady's is a better film.
The lopsided santa aditionally cause because whale secondarily invent worth a idiotic quit. unusual, jolly dibble
Jack nailed the type of officer you're very likely to encounter as you get closer and closer to the "tip of the sword".
The Tip.
@@johnchristopher464 Amen, brother
Not really, generally the higher ranking the officer the more friendly and well mannered they are. Idk what gives out the stereotype that there are these Col Jessup type of officers and I'm sure there may be a few here and there but the culture of the military doesn't really promote this type of behavior.
@@AZ-xw5yb it's not actually that surprising, since with greater power it's not unheard of for people to get more arrogant and supercilious. And as for that military culture, it's about respecting those above you, so it can make commanding officers and colonels a bit like jack's character
Actually... he nailed the stereotype, but not the reality.
I've met some of the real ones.
I love the way he blows that smoke at the end, with that mean look on his face. Nicholson is such a badass!!
you are really corny
😘😘😘
Ya! Reminiscent of a fire-breathing dragon.
Agree. he is really a badass, and it took long time to figure out. at the beginning i thought he was a real commander like he said: honor, loyalty, follow the order. later on i realize that he treats himself an order maker. he makes the mistake but wants to cover up, even it means putting 2 marines into the jails.
he is the ultimate bad boy
When he says 'you have to ask me nicely', he literally send chills down your spine. Jack Nicholson is the greatest actor out there.
Besides de Niro and Pacino
The acting is great but the storyline is stupid. He's not gonna suddenly give himself away by talking crazy. He is too smart.
@@Better_Call_Raul What part of anything he said was crazy?
@@marcuslong9761 03:00 Danny was walking away and just asked for routine papers. Everything was going relatively well for him up until that point. Danny had relatively little suspicion. Then he gave himself away as a lunatic. "I'm here to help you. You believe that don't you? Don't you??...You can have the papers but you gotta ask me nicely!!...faggity uniform.." It suddenly draws suspicion on him and the turning point for Danny. So over the top and unnecessary. He should have just shut the hell up.
I didn't know Jack Nicholson is also my father.
The movies of that time which only run by sheer quality of acting, and not on VFX or CGI visualisation. The expressions on the face of the actors, the dialogues, the flow just miss them now. This movie just gets your adrenaline pumping by only that quality. Experienced Jack and equally talented young cruise. Unbelievable movie.
Yes!
One of my all time favourites!
I watched the movie at least 10 × and will watch again.
They're all fantastic ; Jack , Tom , Demi , Kevin . But , Special
Place in my heart for Tom who looked exactly like my father
In his uniform when I was a little girl .❤💋
Jack Nickelson played his part so beautifully, I actually thought that he was a Marine. He was great in, The Last Detail as well. Never a dull moment with Jack Nickelson, he is the
Ultimate in acting.
What a talented person!

Jack is sooooo iconic and has his place in history as one of the greatest actors ever!;
The forced chuckles from the Colonel's subordinates that have probably heard that joke a hundred times over already.
The tiny mocking chuckle Jack gives after Cruise "asks him nicely" is sooo perfect. It's like "heh I knew this spineless pretty boy wouldn't have the balls to stand up to me"
That pretty boy set him right up.. lol. It’s all a game.
Tommy's timid pretty boy act was a set up, and it paid off in the end!
@@lindac7966 yup, he lured him right in for the trap!
@@ProxyAuthenticationRequired hahaha!!! Loved the comment! Cheers..
Cruise hadnt said one disrespectul thing to Jack in that convo. He did that to show demi moore that he wasn't afraid of the man in this interaction, so he def wasn't gonna be intimidated by the woman trying to spook him.
I loved Jack in this.
Awesome acting.
The first movie I saw of Jack Nickelson was 'As good as it gets' and from that day I became a fan of him. What a brilliant actor.
Wow! You're kidding! That was your first? Well, I'm envious Because I wish I could go back and see his movies for the first time again! He's been in do many classics it's hard to know where to start!
One of his greatest movie : 'One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest'.
A drama but what a character he played.
And a cast ... wow. Recognize the Doc from Back to the Future?
Or Danny de Vito?
He was already a legend DECADES before he made that movie.
3:09. Danny realizes Jessup is guilty.
Jack nickelson is so imtimidating
Nicholson is legend. No other way to put it
A Few Good Men is the only movie outside of the Top Gun movies that Cruise plays a Naval officer.
Your point?
@@markfox1545 The point was literally stated already, just posting a random fact.
My question is who gives a fk?????
and Tropic Thunder is the only movie where RDJ is black
ya dont say
Colonel Jesup's face at the end says, "This guy might be a serious problem!"
And indeed he was.
Anyone able to disclose a narcissist its true nature is a problem to the narcissist.
True, that. You mess with the bull, you get the horns. Jessup ends learning that the hard way. 😁
All he had to say at the trial was "No I didn't order the code red." But he didn't do that, did he? He confessed. He's an idiot.
@@lpr5269 Something about having power and being old generally makes one lose their filter. I used to think the confession was unrealistic and I still do, but over the years dealing with Jessup's type of people (or those who fancy themselves to be) I've come to think it wasn't as unlikely as I thought.
You have to ask me nicely because I'm Jack Nicholson.
Oh yeah? Well I'm Jack Reacher!
Colonel Jessup is LONG retired. "Danny & Jo" are now in charge of 'manning the Wall'..
Even though Nicholsons acting was superb , that particular year , Gene actually out played him in Unforgiven , hence the Oscar went to him instead , despite Jack being the bookies favorite… Well I guess there’s always someone who upsets all the odds !
And deservedly so, Hackman was excellent in that film 👌
That scene is important because when Jack Nicholson embarrasses Tom Cruise by demanding he “asks him nicely” that is when Tom Cruise takes a grudge against him and Jack Nicholson is a marked man.
i feel more than a grudge cruise’s character realizes that as an adversary the colonel has a weakness which was his ego and cant handle being talked down to by those he consider inferior, which is what he used to finally defeat him in court
Jessup really screws up here. Pretty idiotic. He could have just played it cool. Cruise laid a trap and Jessup fell hook, line and sinker. Now it's straightforward. Cruise just needs to do the same thing on the witness stand and he does. Jessup is easily manipulated.
@@otakurocklee Well, men with big egos usually are.
@@rywk4225 Excellent analysis. So many of these comments miss the point in the script writing.
Your analysis is 100% true. Something like this just happened to me at work and imo the relationship is tarnished
Jack Nicholson was awesome in this role.
You don't call junior officers by their first name. I don't care what your rank is.
The scene would have played out differently if the Cruise character had said: "I'm not here to 'Ask nicely,' Sir. I'm here on official business pursuant to a criminal investigation. Either you comply or do not, that's your choice. In either case, it's going into my report to the Judge Advocate General's Office." Even Colonel Jessup isn't above the official bureaucracy.
very cinematic but wouldnt be the case in real life. A young LT would be shaking in his boots in the presense of a full bird.
THIS is what Jack Nicholson is great at. That feeling of a boiling rage just about kept under control with a calm voice and smile. You worry that any moment he's going to explode. Every now and again, some rage leaks out like a lid on a boiling pot lifting.
He's correct. The original request should have had "sir" thrown in a few times.
That moment at 3:24-3:25 where all the blood and anguish from jack’s face drains into a relax smile is just...✨👌
It’s very subtle but effective.
1:54 the way you put the cigar in your mouth, i would say yeah. You are a little bit nervous. Brilliant acting
Nicholson's screen time in the movie was rather minimal but he made the movie. Entire cast was first-rate.
Agreed, it was the first time I actually thought highly of Cruise as an actor (in that famous court scene opp. Nicholson). But also supporting characters played superb.
The terrifying thing is there are (or were) people like this, military or not
I requested that UA-cam show more A Few Good Men clips and they told me that I had to ask nicely
The conversation style is between Old school Vs New School
Man, these old movies are full of current day big no no's.
Yup lol. A sign that times change all the time. So many cancel-worthy dialogue here 😅🤣
@@mrm64 no, misogynistic assholes are still portrayed in modern cinema, just like here
@@mrm64 In any sane society, this dialogue would be accepted for what it is: dramatically stirring.
Jessup did have a point, Kaffee was kinda loose with his deference to a superior officer in this scene. He did it in a real bastard way, but he still did have a point.
Aside from the way he addressed the Colonel, I don't think the way he, as a LTjg , addressed a Lt. Cmdr by her first name during a formal interview would have gone over too well.
A lot of bad men would definitely go down in militaries all over the world were the likes of a few good men i.e Lieutenant which Tom played actually existed and played their due part in JAG branches worldwide!
And a lot more atrocities would be committed in this world if it weren't for the likes of men such as Col Jesup. You can't have soft men and soft leaders in positions of great responsibility
A fine reminder of what Rob Reiner could do before he lost his manhood in pursuit of his hatred for Donald Trump
It amazes me how Tom Cruise acting is not really appreciated. I don’t know what good acting is but, even in Rainman, he was a bloody convincing
Jack is a powerhouse of acting. Up there with Pacino and Clint Eastwood and a handful of others. They don‘t make them like this anymore.
What about Ryan Reynolds, Jack Black, etc? Kidding
@@ChannelOne-1 Literally lol!
What about "The Rock" boomer?
Norton? Dicaprio? Phoenix? Ledger? Bale? Gylenhaal? McConaughey?
You forgot the GOAT Brando
What a delightful brunch.
Oscar awards are a joke to just promote hero worship and lead actor domination in the movie industry!!!! Nicholson deserves better , so are Gary oldman, Decaprio, Christopher waltz, Morgan Freeman and so on etc etc.. !!!! Award jury needs to get out of the mindset of hero worship and understand there is a difference between the "best Actor " and the "best leading actor " in movies !!!!
I was just wondering if Colonel Jessup got his cigars over the fence.
Of course. He had major entitlement issues. You can bet that he felt he deserved cuban cigars. After almost they are the best
He actually, for real, laid his ears back when he said, "You gotta ask me nicely."
Top level.
Always respect the rank. There is no way JAG would treat a colonel like a paper pusher. The request was an insult, in front of the XO and LT.
There is no paper without his authorization. Especially since he was complicit in the murder of a soldier. So the request was correct. And the arrogant way he answered turned Cruise from wanting to get out of there and end this expeditiously to wanting to roast his criminal ass in court. His hubris ended his career and sent him on a path to prison. Just an opinion.
Very nice content, thank you for sharing, keep it up!😻
JN what a legend.
Gott love how a lt jg takes lead over the lt comm
I never understood his comment though about waiting till a woman becomes President. A woman Marine Brigadier General would qualify.
I think it had to do with the fact that he was the highest ranking officer down there. Didn't seem to be any generals present, at least not that were mentioned in the movie
@Erik Lugli exactly!!!
At 3:16 is exactly when tom knew he has to take jack down with his Harvard mouth lol.
I don't know who is worse: The butterbar 2nd lieutenant ordering around a lieutenant commander or the lieutenant commander letting that shit happen lol.
You mean lt jg he’s not a butter bar he’s got a silver bar he’s not an ensign
@@Utubesuperstar jesus you're right, what a braindead mistake on my part lol
@@streetstroller Yeah danny boys lack of respect and customs and courtesies is ridiculous
I maintain that Kaffee and Galloway were playing some good cop, bad cop here.
in effect they were, but that's only the intended effect by Kaffee but not by Galloway; she was just being her usual self.
one of the things that annoyed me about this movie is how seemingly unrealistic Galloway's cluelessness was, even though I'm sure there are lawyers that incompetent in real life.
Maverick getting schooled by the joker
The Colonel dropping "the other F-bomb"...can't get away with that in film or the military these days
Yeh? Why not?
@@leonardobraynen1524 GLAAD's mafia in the film industry will destroy you. They nearly ended Kevin Smith for dropping a few of those other "f bombs" in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
Oh no so sad
Throughout the movie, I found it so easy to get into Colonel Jessup's head because of Jack's portrayal. Imagine some hardened veteran being prosecuted by a couple of snot nossed pups acting tough who never saw anything more than a bird die on the wire, while Jessup has seen every nasty asspect of war one can never unsee. The juxtaposition is all the tension you need to drive the narrative.
Lt. Kaffee: "Colonel i need a transfer order for Santiago!"
Colonel Jessup: "Of course Lt. Kaffee you can have a transfer order of Santiagos under two conditions Lt."
Lt. Kaffee: "What conditions Colonel?"
Colonel Jessup: "Tom, you don't mind if i call you that, wright? First Tom, i need you to ask me nicely."
Lt. Kaffee: "Of course Sir and the second condition?"
Colonel Jessup: "Second, Tom i need you to come out of the closet!"
Lt. Kaffee: "The closet, Sir? But i am not in the closet Sir!"
Colonel Jessup: "Lt. just come out of the closet and you will get all the transfer orders that you need."
Lt. Kaffee: "But i am not even in the closet."
He did a western movie called Missouri Breaks. He played a hand hired by a rich land owner. The land owner had a self entitled daughter. And Jack's character treated her accordingly. She asks him one day "why are you so mean to me?" He responds..."well ma'am...you strike me as someone who hasn't been told enough what a pain in the ass she is. I'm not bein' mean...I'm just bein' thorough." Fucking brilliant. Classic "Jack."
I used to be a Jack Nicholson's fan. Since I watched the movie back in the '90, I became a whole air conditioned.
Liar liar pants on fire . Jessop lied throughout the whole movie
As much as a D-bag that Col Jessup was, especially in the BJ comments, He was absolutely correct to come down on Kaffee for his lack of respect when addressing a superior officer. If Lt. Cmdr Galloway had the same stones she showed at her first meeting with Kaffee she would've also had taken issue with a LTjg addressing her by her first name while interviewing the Colonel.
Happy 30th Anniversary to the Cast & Crew of "A few Good Men" (1992) And let me say That Actress Demi Moore was my favorite in this film Actress #DemiMoore Talented & Glamorous Woman in this film #Entertainment #Fan
"All you did was weaken a country today"
Old School Navy…… Where did it go?
Men ain’t men no more in this country let alone the military. Democrats are f**king that up also
How can I ask a hidden coward ? Ask nicely meaning? Stop hiding behind all if these movie clups.
Old men screwed with ugly beliefs and fantasy, and the new generation that doesn't know how it works trying to navigate on it. It is just brilliant this movie. Underrated I tell you.
Bien ahí, el coronel Jessup poniéndolos en su lugar
I want you to stand there in that "non-binary, androgyne, gender fluid, transfeminine, demiboy" uniform and ask me nicely.
GenZ exists because we made people like Col Jessup look live villains.
Gimme the bat, Wendy.
WENDYYYY!!!!
One of the most terrifying villain of movie history
Colonel is not in the navy ranks captain is that's odd?
Why should you have any respect for a bully?
See, he's a nice guy. He just needs some respect.
Fucking hell of a scene
She outranks you Danny lol. Ouch.
The look of his face it means bad thing
Jack is scary good in this role eesh
demi was such a great actress
why are Demi and Tom never in the same uniform? And why are they wearing whites anyway? Is there a parade or CoC later we don't know about?
from a narrative point, I think it was to symbolize she and the two guys weren't on the same page. First meeting she was in the whites and they the khakis. Second meeting they were in whites and she in khakis. The story even preemptively explained that by making it Sam's idea, that it would be more comfortable wearing whites in Cuba where it's hot.
Totally forgot about the dialogue. "...superior officers...BJ's..."....Kind of liked the film the first time I saw it. Will keep an eye out for the film and rewatch it...heh...might get more out of it :)
I even have the real names of people
Being that ive worked with some Marine Colonels in deployment environments. Some are laid back within their reason, some of a-holes to any one who dares talk down to them disrespectfully. Some just care about their next promotion.
Jacks acting was class A!! When i watched this clip I swear on the blood bullets and medals he was a marine officer.
Sinister bastard... three whole shades past the ornery and bigoted misanthrope Melvin Udall in "As Good as It Gets." Nicholson nailed it.
They really don’t make good movies like these anymore. I purchased a copy of this flick and usually watch it on the yearly. It doesn’t get old, and what do ya know, even when I saw this little snippet on youtube, I just had to watch it. Where’s the intensity anymore? Where’s the grit! Well in this movie you’ll find it. Especially in the courtroom scene with ol’ Jacky Boy! What an actor. Notice how Nicholson especially doesn’t blink often when he is performing his lines. Now watch cnn anchors or abc cbs news, eyes blinking non stop. This is a major tell. Confident people talking confidently about X subject matter doesn’t require the thinky blinky I’m obviously nervous routine. Byeee
In my humble opinion, from beginning to end Nicholson walked ways with this movie....Cruise & the rest of the cast were simply 'Extras" Possibly Nicholson's finest role.
Luke 11:34
The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
Cocky like that is too enviable. Doesn't happen. Fantasy . Classic though. Marine or not ,Doesn't happen. Make your case. Prove it. Idk what happened. No drama.
How did Galloway know that Kaffee only did this to see Jessup's reaction to his request?
When the the lawyers left the table a salute by the lawyers and dismissal by the colonel would be proper military protocol. Tom's initial departure was as a matter of factly if not disrespectful.
I've actually never seen this clip with all the F bombs.i think it takes away from the scene.
Good that he made them ask nicely after they were so rude to him.
In the end Danny got his way with POS Jessup
asking for the transfer order got jessups attn. as 1 possible start and place cover up could go south
Hahahahaha
And this movie is how "mountain dew code red" was thought up.
@1:35 The moment Kaffee realizes it was definitely a code red.
Jack, the best ever. I am a big fan (most part) for this movie and "As good as it gets"
Tom Cruise's character looks so intimidated.
If he said that to me....I'd be like "pppwba-pwbba---pweeeeese?"
Nicholson’s acting at 3:00 is so intense I’d be intimidated from even being in the same room as him
He says promoted them all 🤣🤣🤣
