  • Thanks to those who have made the boat build and overall life easier and better by kindly donating some money to the boat. I always put it to good use and today bought more fibreglass and resin to protect the galley thanks to Cheryl & Mark and Brian Clarke.
Here’s a link to the buy me a coffee (or timber) as some have requested it.

Whilst filming today I had a special visitor. A beautiful Kingfisher cake to see me. I had a long car drive to Brentford and listened to Taylor swift and ed Sheeran. Bruno Mars, Harry styles, aitch and stormsy kept me entertained whilst doing the fibreglassing.

Not sure if you've chosen a name for your boat yet, but Kingfisher would be a good one, your lucky to see one so close up. 😊

Hi James wow an amazing bird to see. Your very lucky. Watching them fly then on to a branch. Then take a fish just beneath the surface is something else. Definitely a good omen.

James, looks like the Kingfisher has taken a liking to your new boat. Perhaps you should let yourself be inspired by the Kingfisher colour scheme when you paint your new boat.

The beautiful Kingfisher is something I have seen a few times when I have been fishing the Canal....actually perching on my fishing rod. A kingfisher sighting symbolizes peace, prosperity, and good luck in many cultures. It is a positive and auspicious sign.

They will do that! I've only seen it on small rivers when I'm very quiet and still, though I did once have it on the Zambezi! That one was big and red.

Wow James that was such a special moment to see the Kingfisher. Chuffed the fibreglass is doing the job. Loving watching the boat come on so much. Take care.

Could you get a large rubber washer/seal for both inside and out? That would make the depth larger and prevent a metal to metal seal which would be more watertight. Cheers Les on Glendyne

i've not seen a kingfisher since the mid 1970s but i think we have herons and they have won on the food competition. there weren't so many fish after a few years. the canals must be healthier than you would think a human populated place would be and wild birds pretty soon loose their shyness.

You should definitely add more layers of glass fiber because else you will be sorry when one of your kids or someone else accidentally bangs their foot through. You need to make them more impact resistant.

Instead of turning Project 58 around to have the other side on the tow path, have you thought of just moving Sloe patrol a bit so that the deck can be used as a work platform?

    Hi James.
In all my hours of sitting by lakes and canals, I've only seen a Kingfisher twice. You're a lucky man to have a resident.
I also prefer spending money on resin, rather than coffee. 😉
    All the best, mate.
    Crack on!

having done the bendy bits in vertical fiberglass, give thought to going back through with horizontally placed fiberglass

  • @Orxenhorf

You could bolt it to the metal skin without the inner wood wall being present. You just may need extra nuts, if it doesn't come with some, to go against the steel. And, you'd probably need to remove & properly reinstall the bolts/nuts later once the wood is ready. (The external sealant would have set by that point and hold it in place during the work.)
Another thing that can be done to avoid grinding is checking if the manufacturer has a line of shims for them. I think it's quite likely they would have pre-cut & drilled pieces matching the finish of their products for that very reason in 1 mm thicknesses. (Placed between the wall and inner rim to compensate for thickness differences.)

Love the Kingfisher! So glad you were able to film him. I watched Canice Bannon install those portholes on his Dutch Barge. I read where someone suggested checking out type of portholes they have on new narrowboats. Maybe a better and easier fit. With the children on board maybe another layer or two of fiberglass on the bends would be a good idea. I live in a house, so I am not the best person to give advice.
Loving the progress. Hope things work out for Marlon…..there is always Sloe Patrol. 🤔
    😊🤗 Kathy

For safety, I would definitely not install those industrial strength portholes. Take a quick look at how portholes are made on modern narrow boats - they do not use that rough industrial type of porthole!

Fibre glass (The glass!) is measured in Grams per Square Metre if I recall correctly.
Years back there was a kingfisher on the canal in Islington - I was surprised to see it out of the window at work (Wenlock Basin)

Please wear a mask when sanding the fiberglass! I wish you had used one with the glue. The tiny particles of fiberglass can get into your lungs and cause problems later. I’m only interested in your well being.
Can’t wait to see the portholes!

  • @theoilybeard3287
    @theoilybeard3287 9 місяців тому

The excess fibre glass strands you can usually cut off with a sharp (new, preferably) stanley knife blade, followed by a bit of sandpaper or file if needed. If you get it just when the resin has mostly set but is still plastic then you can cut off quite thick excess with the blade I found, but you do need to be a bit careful (or experienced) if you do that.
Failing that, a fine tooth hacksaw blade or junior hacksaw blade will work well once it's hard.

Mate nice video. Kingfisher was ace.
Portholes probably are tapered as your walls slope? I'm worried about the angle grinder idea.
Why don't you dry fit them first and see how they are?!

I absolutely loved seeing that little bird today and glad others did too. Marlon’s boat is not good. The engine is seized although possibly not a total goner. He is now looking at getting an outboard engine for it

For cutting big circles in steel sheet I used to use a jigsaw attached to a thin steel bar - the bar has a hole in it a the other end that you bolt through a hole in the centre of the circle you wish to cut. Worked well for me, but maybe the radius you're cutting might be a little too small for that. I've done the drilled holes followed by jigsaw thing as well, but I hate it! I think these days I'd mark the circle very well with a deep scratch and cut it by eye if the saw/blade will do it, sometimes it wants to cut too straight though.
Have plenty of drills and jigsaw blades to hand though, good luck!

I would definately make it thinker, it's a corner and they have a habit of being bumped and it's not worth the risk of damage for the sake of a couple more layers now.

Hi James I don't know if you have heard about this year's winter fuel allowance ..???
But it seems that continues cruisers are included this year.. also there is a mention about last years fuel allowance ..on how to claim it if you did not receive it..on the government website..
Also the c r t have a section on this on their website..it may be worth enquiring about this..as every little helps with running your home mate..
I know that you are clued up when it comes to this issue but I haven't found anything on any social media or government websites..
It seems like they are trying to hide this from view I only came across this when checking for my neighbour on what they were entitled to this year..
While checking for them I came across a section on narrow boats that are entitled to the fuel allowance .and a section on how to claim last years fuel allowance..if you did not receive it.
I remember you saying something about this issue in one of your videos.last year..
Unfortunately you have to apply for the fuel allowance again..and prove that you are a continuous cruiser..and not moored in a marina..
Anyway keep up your impeccable videos on narrow boat life as they are a inspiration to many people who are thinking about life afloat on the waterways of this country...
At least you show the down side as well as the up side of narrow boat life.
