do you think its structurally sound? that candle is pretty big. you might consider adding some gusset plates to keep it from collapsing and maybe some guy wires to keep it from tipping over. it looks like it might be light weight!
Keep the videos coming, they are great.

That is absolutely a thing of beauty. I can almost feel the heft of it and it's durability and supurb craftsmanship are readily apparent. Well done.
I am not a blacksmith, but have been interested in smithing since I was young, this just makes me want to get into it even more.
I am an artist and often create paintings as gifts for friends and family, my mom chief among the recipients of said paintings. That part about creating something for a loved one that you essentially keep it forever, that brought a tear to my eye. Love your channel. Thank you for making such wonderful and informative content. You are a joy to watch and have a fount of knowledge for us to absorb. Thank you again.

Having made a chef's knife (my first) for my son in law this past Christmas, I found your comments about doing a project for a loved one to be very true indeed. I even mentioned it in the note to him with the gift, which was itself a gift. Yours is the first observation of this kind I've heard on youtube. Thanks!

    Very nice Scott, wonderful piece!
I agree with your sentiment, we'll said.
I would like to add that my focus and personal investment in a project are greatly shaped by who the recipient is. I always try to do my best on commission work, but I don't always put my soul into it. But when I make something for a friend or loved one, and it's a surprise, I put more of myself into it. The drive and focus are personal, and it shows.....at least to me.

As I am trying to go back and watch ALL of your videos, I happened upon this one.
We have moved many times and have never thrown out everything we should have. We agreed to stop collecting things... but well as a remarried widower I am not so adamant about some things this time around. This is my second chance to be kinder, gentler in marriage. But I still have the feelings that are now called minimalist -- to some degree.
SO! You said you were going to make a giant candle holder. I nearly groaned. However, I enjoyed watching you build it. And I am in huge agreement about making something for someone you love.
By the time I got to the end of the video I was all in your camp.
The candle holder is beautiful. I hope your daughter in law and her hubs see this vodeo.
I know what gifts mean to me, which is a lot.
They are in a wonderful family. I trust she will appreciate this gift hugely! Perhaps with a tear or two.

Your goodness is killing me, Scott. How wonderful to speak eloquently about making gifts for those you love, a daughter-in-law. While familial love has become a joke to much of society, you prove it is alive and can be nurtured by intentional giving.

Wow, by the thumb nail I was expecting a small piece so was pleasantly surprised with the outcome ! Very nice !
My oldest son gave my wife and I a floor model of a LARGE candle holder years ago and it has a 8 inch wide by 10 inches tall candle with three wicks .
We hardly ever burned it for fear of not being able to find another candle that size !
Thanks for sharing and take care.

Wow! If it doesn't work out as a candle holder, it should work to support the car while changing tires.
That is a wonderful candle holder. Quite a few novel techniques employed in the build. And I agree that a home crafted gift is something to be loved & cherished, by the builder and the recipient.
Great video. I can't wait for the next one.

Wonderful video as always. Glad to see that you look at this as both a craft as well as artistic expression! I'm sure there are too many people who do metal work for the commission only, and it seems to be so much more. I want to second Dylan Franz's request for blacksmithing basics, I think it'd be great to see a series of videos on that!

  • @U1__

I really enjoy your videos, and part what makes them so enjoyable is that you can see and hear the passion you have for your work and I thought it was a lovely touch to explain the different mindsets you have with a commissioned projects versus a more personal one.
If I could make one request, and this might be more of a personal preference, it would be to not speed up your footage so much! Part of the charm of watching a skilled craftsman do his or her work is to see the item take shape and see how different techniques affect the process. Pause and show the result of a specific step and explain how you did it!
Looking forward to your next video!

Hey there, your Daughter in law can also throw that at someone for self defense! As far as the torch, I love my gas saver. There is a “candle” that can burn all day and all you have to do is lift up your torch, waive it over the candle and your back heating, when done, hang it up and flow shuts down until your ready again, saves gas and is safe. You deserve such a tool more than me but you can’t have mine!

I find your metal working table with all the holes in it fascinating - don't think I've seen that before.
Is your shop floor a solid concrete slab underneath? Or is it "loose" with the stones on top which then lets you concrete any new equipment into place when needed?
