- For lesson 4, we are taking a look at DKA vs HHS. Diabetic ketoacidosis vs hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state. These are 2 hyperglycemic emergencies that we will often see in caring for our patients in the ICU.
We start off talking about DKA and what exactly DKA is and the defining characteristics. We also talk about the causes that lead out patients in to DKA. From there we take a deep dive in to the pathophysiology of DKA and fully break it down in a way in which hopefully will make it easy to follow and understand. Finally we talk about the signs and symptoms that you will see with DKA.
Next we move on and talk about HHS and how it is defined and its characteristics, compared to DKA. We talk about the causes being very similar to that of DKA, and then move in to talk about the pathophysiology and most importantly, how it differs from DKA. This leads us in to talking about some of signs and symptoms of DKA that are not seen in HHS.
Finally we cover the treatment of both of these hyperglycemia emergencies. The treatment is almost exactly the same for both of these focusing on 4 major areas of treatment.
Hopefully at the end of this lesson you will have a much better understanding of both DKA and HHS as well as the ways in which they are similar as well as the ways in which they are different and how we would reco

DKA/HHS pts are some of my favorite to take care of specifically because they come up so so sick and you can really see an improvement in them over a few hours during your shift it’s quite satisfying
I will say those ones are fun ones to take care of.... a lot of them, not so much :|
Thank you for your generosity in sharing your God-given talent
Truly my pleasure Socorro. You are far to kind! Hope you are well.
Thank you so much for this information, I have listened to a lot of presentations but yours is the best that I have ever heard. Thank you so much for keeping it simple, while at the same time going in-depth into what causes these conditions to occur
Awesome to hear this Antonio! I appreciate the kind words and really glad you enjoyed the lesson!
This was an excellent video regarding DKA and HHS. I love the way you break down information. Thank you for making these videos
Thank you so much! Really glad it resonated well!
Thanks for this video! I'm in ketosis and I would like to see a video showing the differences between what you mention in this video and a healthy response to nutritional ketosis.
I love these videos. I'm about to finish my last semester of nursing school and these have helped so much. I was you had 10,000 more videos!
Congrats Matthew! Thats awesome to hear and so glad these have been helpful for you! I really wish I had more time to make many more. Especially now, free time is not in my favor. Working to keep getting more videos up during this time though.
Doing a presentation on DKA Tuesday in class.
As a student I cannot thank you enough for the quality content.
You'll have to let me know how the presentation goes! Happy to be able to make videos people enjoy and find valuable.
@@ICUAdvantage Presentation went very well. Really tried to get it across that hyperglycemia is not the main concern in order of acuity. Thanks again!
Thanks a lot. This was a really good lecture, but you didn't address about how to give insulin in these patients. The doses for loading and maintenance.
Thank a lot for your important job. Your videos helps me a lot to obtain knowledge for my future occupation- medical interpretation!!!
Thank you for these videos; I'm hoping to work in the ER and I think your videos will help me just as much there as in the ICU!
Yes, very applicable in the ED as well as ICU!
Thank you so much guys! I finally can figure out the difference between the two without getting too heavy on the terminology. Well set out with the patho, causes and characteristics and such a simple explanation to follow AND understand.
