I can see a lot of people commenting on the lack of animation, but to be fair, I personally think it fits. Given that it was based on a DnD style stream, it makes sense for the presentation, and I think it's charming in that aspect. Even the 'overhead token' shots fit a Roll20 vibe, with the tiles and character tokens. I'm not saying EE is revolutionary in animation, but given the budget and the feel it's going for, it holds up well and the art style itself is cute and interesting.
Honestly, I too was at first disappointed when I saw the show the first time. I'd been expecting something more animated, if you get what I'm saying. But, I decided to keep watching, because Jello is not the only UA-camr out there who has done stop motion / slide show style animations to tell a story. Disappointment turned to surprise, however, as I continued to watch. And I quickly grew to adore the characters on screen. By the end of the first episode I was invested, and hungered for more. Yes, the plot is somewhat loose and a bit obviously based on a rehashing of a GURPS or DnD type game session, and without a doubt the lack of animation hurts it when it was simply branded as 'animated' (honestly, should have called it anything else if only to avoid the backlash. call it an 'Video Visual Novel' or 'Animated Webcomic' to get people's mind out of comparing it to something like Avatar the Last Airbender), but the voice acting, the humor, and the characters were so immersive, so amazing so FUN that I couldn't help but love the show.

Captain Comic I mean it as something that’s entertaining and quirky! The colors of the characters and setting kind of pop, and are pleasing to look at.
I don't know what people were expecting of Epithet Erased, it's by definition an Indie Show. Made by a ragtag group of people with some help from an animation company, sure, but it was mainly handled by complete amateurs/people who weren't well versed in making an actual full length show. Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss are not a good comparison if you do bring it up, since production of that took way longer and had more backing. They are both Indie shows too, but they're an outlier to the general majority of indie shows.
Yeah, it's really dumb. I remember watching a video on Epithet Erased where the guy said "couldn't they just make the animation better?" as if animation isn't an incredibly long and painstaking process, even if you have big budget which Epithet Erased did not.
If i'm being honest, I expected alot more when I heard Powerhouse was going to help out. got disappointed with the end result, buuut i watched it anyway and enjoyed it by the end.
Yehuda Halpern I honestly felt that the lack of animation in some scenes actually made the show more humorous, especially when the characters are narrating themselves. I thought it made the show have a unique type of humor that I personally enjoy.
I have a good people those people has never watched Inferno Cop or Ninja Slayer The Animation. granted, the later was given an animation budget, but still keeps that same style.

No one seems to realise that even for this 'stiff cardboard non-animation', hundreds of sprites still had to be drawn for different poses and expressions for each character. It takes a whole lot of effort just for this- how hard do you think animating the whole thing fully would be? Plus they werent working on some explosively big budget. You guys are shitting on a show with a good story, characters, and art(not animation, for yall haters), for not being fully animated. That aside,it may just be my own bias but i love this show. The memey animation style makes the comedic moments a lot funnier than they would be with proper animation. And they go full animation for big scenes too so what are you complaining about?
In the priemere of Reflection (I forget the number of the ep lol) Jello said that the animated part at the end cost $14,000. That’s probably why the animation is like that.

2021 EDIT: Who came back to this after the books were announced? I love that this video exists. You took the time and care to conduct an extensive and thorough interview with the person who knows the most about what happened behind the scenes, because he and his team were the ones who brought Epithet to life, and I love that the video went in a different direction than just a simple review. Yes, the process was not easy. Making something on this scale is never easy. But my hope is that when people watch this, they will see how much love, care, and sheer effort Jello put into making his little series. Even if the show never gets a second season, even if the seven episodes we have are the only ones we get, I am eternally grateful we got even a little bit of something filled with so much charm, passion and love. I am eternally grateful that Epithet Erased exists.
Yeah, not having everything planned out and asking a studio to animate on the fly would be a massive issue for any production. I DO have stuff like OCs on the shelf and an idea in my head but people to motivate me is where I'm lacking and most likey I ain't gonna find people I trust for that anytime soon. For now solo ground work is the best anyone hoping to independently create something can do and advance from there.
1:25 "Don't worry, I'm not in the United States... I'm somewhere else." I'm gonna need a clip of that Also, loved this video! The interview with Jello was excellent and told me a lot about a series I need to get into!
Epithet Erased has: -A great storyline -fantastic world building -amazing characters -smart plot devices -memorable lines and scenes Yet everyone shitted on the animation..........................................ok-
One of my favorite shows to work on so far because of the writing and likeable characters. I am sad to see that this video doesn't talk about the struggles of the other crew, but i get that this focused on jello. The editors and artist pulled all nighters for weeks getting little to no sleep some days (along with jello since he was directing us). Still worth the hard work as jello did an amazing job with the struggles and time he had.
All in all I really like E.E I especially liked how it did something different, such as using a D&D style of narration. True the animation was lacking but I believe the voice acting and art work makes up for that as they're both pretty expressive. Point being if there was a season two I wouldn't hesitate watching as even from episode one the animation style grew on me.
I’d be willing to bet that the vast majority of people complaining about the animation of a free show on UA-cam have never animated once in their lives
@@enclavesoldier5737 it's not animated badly, the animated scences are incredible, and the main kind of "animation" is a stylistic and budget choice that I can very easily get behind
Why are all the people hating on the animation? It’s cute and has a lot of heart. It’s just unique and tells emotion incredibly well without immense work allowing it to have beautiful writing.
While i love the style and dont want it to change, i can understand people wanting some more..... "movement" with the characters. its not something someone would expect from animated content and until the major animated scenes does nothing to really grab the attention of someone looking for small minor movements. (yes i realize that i just claimed the complainers have low attention spans, dont generalize yourself because i made a comment ^-^)
When she was speaking and she was supposed to have a scared or surprised look on her face it looked really fake and mediocre. Just a couple of dashed lines around the eyes would help and some exaggeration here and there as well but ehhhhh. I wouldn’t watch it and it’s not my thing. You can like it all you want but the thing even makes animatics look like fluid animation.
"I'm specifically talking about you, the person in the audience who has a bunch of OC's gathering dust on the store shelf that is their life." Ouch, that hurt. Their D&D characters, but still, I need to get myself together and do something about it. Maybe write a book using the same unused characters I've made.
SAMEEE I’ve literally got like, six 3/4s completed characters just chilling in my brain that would totally go away if I just wrote a story, but I don’t have the MOTIVATION. Maybe I’ll do it during quarantine summer cause there’s nothing to doooo..
I remember reading comments on DaftPina's posts abt how he was making a video on Epithet Erased wanting him to shit on the series entirely, and I'm relieved to see they didn't get what they wanted
Oh my goodness... I actually really loved what Epithet Erased is... I had NO IDEA it was this non-planned, I just took it all for an aesthetic style! Jello, love your work but if you plan on making a Season 2 (which I hope you are) please plan a year in advance!
"He's talking about you. The person in the audience who has a bunch of ocs gathering dust on the storage shelf that is their life" Never have I been so offended by something I completely agree with
Long Fork, as someone who is working in animation production for fun. Yep. YEP YEP. Sometimes people just. Vanish from projects sometimes and you are like "shit what now!!!" And. Then you can't fine someone to fill in so you just. Do it yourself sometimes and then cry about it
While I enjoyed the series, I enjoyed this video more. Hearing a cuddly guy talk about the hell and back he went through to make things happen, all while having a smile on his face is a warm, good feeling. God speed to any creators, imaginers, dreamers who are trying to create, or work up the courage to create. Put shit out there, in the end, it'll be rewarding. I make beats from time to time, and it gives me something to do, even if I'll look at it five years later and say "this is shit." But until that five years hits, I'm having fun making this stuff.
Sometimes you need to ignore the shit people say and just do the things you enjoy because you have fun making it - and more often than not the experience is 100% more rewarding 👍🏻
I don't even mind the animation. The writing is the show's strongest point anyway. Plus, it's a free youtube show that was released weekly. Proper animation would have taken a lot more time and money
@@lauralaura4362 it was also cg and from what I'm told that's considerably easier to animate than traditional 2D. Plus, with Epithet's emphasis on intricate character dwsigns I don't think 3D animation like RWBY's was ever going to happen

This happens all the time, like seriously all the time. An example would be Danny Phantom, Butch Heartman has said himself that he was just barely forming the idea and at lunch with an exec he shot the pitch and it was greenlit, without a single finished drawing or anything. It happens with sit coms and reality T.v a lot as well, and the schedule and management issues in epithet erased are nothing compared to many hollywood movies
I absolutely adored Epithet Erased, I first saw the show after episode 1 was uploaded to youtube but I few days before episode 2 was so I had to wait for them to be released & then I got impatient & signed up with VRV, it was supposed to be a Christmas present but my dad didn't understand, he told me it was free to use & didn't get what I tried explaining to him for the whole subscription thing & then was like screw it, I'm 28 years old & can do what I want so I went for it. The show is super fun, love the humor & everything about it. I do hope that it gets a second season but I read the tweets about production & I understand if it's a long wait, it will make the second season more exciting once it actually does start coming out. In the meantime, I can watch whatever else I want on VRV.
Epithet was an amazing success writing and animation wise. It sucks how much it took out of Jello, meaning we more than likely wont get another animated episode ever again.
I found hilarious that... this is a vid about a animated series and how it went down.... But people in the comments still talk about the Vote Vote Vote video XD
Thank you for making this video- very interesting! I love hearing about production stories, it’s especially interesting now voice directing was the most fun part of this :0 you can really hear it in all the episodes! As much of a pain in all areas this series must’ve been to create, it’s funny, charming, and a work of art. I’m so glad Mr. Blaber decided to pull through with it, and I wish him and all the team a full recovery. Thank you for sharing this interview with is :)
The way people talk down on the art style of this show makes me so sad. I have a story that I more than anything want to turn into an animated series, and that’s my end goal for it once I graduate if it’s possible. But for now I am releasing it as a webcomic because that is the only thing within my means, with a budget of 0 since I don’t pay myself. Seeing people who have no idea how long animation takes and how much those animators deserve to be paid makes me so sad. I think Epithet did a phenomenal job with the budget and schedule it had, and I wish people would appreciate it for what it is.
Even with that cardboard aspect, they still manages to find smart ways to not make the visual borings, which is impressive work honestly. Also everything else is amazing-
I so so so hope the second season comes out, epithet erased helped me through a rough time, I was on the edge of my seat whenever a new episode came out. The characters and story and concepts dragged me in and I can’t wait for more. I’ll wait as long as I need for the next season...just like many other shows I love
13:21, this spoke to me because I have an entire UNIVERSE built over the course of a year that I would love to tel the story of, yet I suck at drawing and am bad at pitching ideas
If it'd been called anything other than simply 'an animated show,' then I think it'd have less critics of the style. Call it a 'Video Visual Novel,' or 'Mixed Media Webcomic,' or 'Slideshow Puppetshow.' Yes, it's hard to explain what genre it is before it's even made, but I truly think people wouldn't be so complain-y if the name was changed.
Lightning D0!t yeah, the video isn’t even that bad. We have people like onision and jake Paul on this platform, I think a dude making a very bias video about voting is probably not the best but certainly not as bad as everyone acts like it is.

@@celestinebuendia No, it's not just having a political opinion like everyone else. You're wrong and here is why. Not everyone else has an audience attempt to coherence them in to voting for who (they as a creator), want to win. That is why you see that video of all those Hollywood stars telling you to vote for Hillary got so much flak and negative attention. Besides the fact it is cringey, it is manipulative and can be considered 'taking advantage'. You also would feel the same way if your company/boss was doing the same thing. Their is a power dynamic there that makes it fucked up and/or just a shitty thing to do.

The way I look at Epithet Erased is kind of like how I look at One Punch Man; it's great and I will sing its praises until the heat death of the universe, but criticizing certain aspects of its production is still totally valid. For instance, ONE cannot draw a good looking character to save his life, the manga takes an age to update despite the FANTASTIC visuals, and the anime can have issues with pacing and suffers from the long hiatuses caused by the manga. So as it stands in my mind, Epithet Erased in its present form is in that awkward middle stage where the quality is undeniable, but it still suffers from certain limitations that can't really be solved without OCEANS of disposable income and sound decisions. So yeah. Can't wait for a season 2, and here's hoping a major studio picks the series back up when all is said and done and animates it fully with that godly Unlimited Budget Works quality treatment it deserves. And that the world doesn't end in the meantime...
There may have not been many moving parts to the animation, but they were surprisingly expressive with what was used. It kinda grew on me after a bit, and the voice acting was really good. Enjoyed the story too, though I cared less about the amulet plot and more about the characters, which is probably a good thing in the long run if season 2 is happening.
When I first saw this show I thought it was some kind of d&d story or something mostly because of the grid floor and the plus and minus health and the stats.

I liked the show, and I think that if a second season was announced (which I’m hoping it is) then Jello will take what lessons he’s learned in working on this first season and apply it to the next
Love this show so much. I was really nervous clicking on this and finding out that perhaps vrv had mistreated jello, or that that no one would take it, but the truth of the matter is that the only story behind the shows creation is a bunch of people putting their heart and soul into a project they truly believed in. Honestly the shows greatest strengths are its character writing and dialog. I was meh on the art style and world till about episode 2-3 when I just completely fell in love with Giovanni and "Bear trap". They are the reason I got so invested and continued to watch. The rest was just bonus good stuff. Not saying the other stuff was bad but i could easily have dropped it but the writing kept me invested. I genuinely hope this series gets a season two and more attention.
I'll be honest, E. E seemed really promising, homewever it was hyped with the trailer and intro to have some pretty good animation to end up having a pretty basic paper-cut animation (as in just a couple of character skits or parts being moved around) Don't get me wrong there's some pretty good paper-cut style animation series, like South Park or Space ghost coast to coast to give two easily recognizable examples. Feels like the animation was a huge turn off for many. The live chat of the first episode release on UA-cam was filled with comments about how the animation was dissapointing and looked like a slide show after it was first seen with the viewers quickly going down.

that video was really important for me, especially when he said "yes you with a buch of ocs gathering dust". i have ocs and a idea but im not good at making stories and need help bringing it to life with VERY limited equipment.
Honestly? People hating EE's animation style feels kind of like back when people were angry at Wind Waker for it's style. Does that make sense? It's a genuinely good artistic choice for what it's trying to do story-wise. But because it's leaning on comedy factor and well-executed simplicity, people who expect something intricate and grandly-rendered say "this sucks!" and ignore the fact that it's a really good story . . . until enough people eventually go like "oh. this is good actually." and then it gets a chance. I hope. I think my only critique for the art style is that the square portraits from the over-the-top D&D board perspective might look less plain if they were rendered as round tokens with white borders. That would mean less empty colored space around the focal point (the faces.) You can still squash and stretch the rounds tokens to hilarious effect like that too when needed.
Always nice to see people be mature about mistakes they make. "Yeah this was a bad idea, I could have done this better" instead of trying to force a good public opinion about it.
It’s hard for me to like anything done by Jello given my first introduction to him was when he was being extremely manipulative and subpar with pushing his politics.

Prostoration Well the show isn’t for me than, as a rightist
I really liked the animation style,it reminded me of a game that I played. The way the sprites moved really add on to the show’s comedy as well!
I know, right?
Isnt it amazing how we see here Creativity really threatened directly by Exestential Fears like Hunger (if Broke, you get hungry, if you get what i mean.)
That's why it's, in the end, important to change the World and have a Basic Money given to Everyone on the Planet.
So no one has to fear dying for Money-reasons.
I understand people's counter-argument to this 'Everyone should get money regardless of Job and all that':
One of the Big Arguments is that of 'Lacking Motivation' if anyone has enough money to survive.
But honestly, i think Earth needs to make this Jump and people just honestly need to get over this.
You shouldnt go to work for Paper Money, the concept is just broken in itself. Humans need to get beyond this and find another Motivation to work - yeah, even the dangerous jobs even.

Honestly, I too was at first disappointed when I saw the show the first time. I'd been expecting something more animated, if you get what I'm saying.

This whole story is so weird to me. How does a show get greenlit with such little progress made on it.
It's like a weird cautionary tale.
This happens all the time, like seriously all the time. It happens with sit coms and reality T.v a lot as well, and the schedule and management issues in epithet erased are nothing compared to many hollywood movies
Given the example of Danny Phantom, a lot more are coming to mind.

13:22 that hit me so hard my heart plummeted, u can't just call me out like that 😰
The way people talk down on the art style of this show makes me so sad.
I personally like the art tbh. It reminds me of how I played with toys when I was a kid.
I was originally put off a bit by the animation, but after watching it I can hardly imagine it being animated differently
Even with that cardboard aspect, they still manages to find smart ways to not make the visual borings, which is impressive work honestly.

*INSPIRATIONAL CHILLS*.....
"No amount of great animation will save a bad story." -John Lasseter
Personally I prefer how they did it. It's really cool. And it motivated me to improve my drawing and polish my occ
8:02 I like the part where Jello phases out of reality
that video was really important for me, especially when he said "yes you with a buch of ocs gathering dust". i have ocs and a idea but im not good at making stories and need help bringing it to life with VERY limited equipment.
God I hope we get season 2 cause I would love to see that cookie episode
Despite all of the problems though, it turned out fantastic. I wouldn't mind if this was the only "season," but would love more.
Yes
Always nice to see people be mature about mistakes they make.
"Yeah this was a bad idea, I could have done this better" instead of trying to force a good public opinion about it.
I love Epithet Erased and it needs more love!
Honestly, Brendas Blaber is deadass one of my favorite writers. I don’t know what it is, I just love what he’s done with Epithet Erased
It’s hard for me to like anything done by Jello given my first introduction to him was when he was being extremely manipulative and subpar with pushing his politics.
can you not
pingu alas no... can you not?
@@LoreReloaded the dude literally made one political video and you decided to have a fucking aneurysm over it. grow up lmao
pingu your response shows why haters exist. At no point an I freaking out, I gave a legitimate criticism of which at least 3 or more people agree and you are going out of your way to white knight. Do keep it up though :)
@@LoreReloaded clearly you cared enough to hop upon the jello man bad bandwagon. i'm not sure where you made a legitimate argument in your comment-you just pointed out that he made a video disagreeing with your views-but please feel free to leave another passive aggressive response
What Jello said at the end really inspired me. Thank you Pina.
