After rewatching bits and pieces of the documentary
    plus the biopic about
    The Partridge Family,
the one thing that Shirley Jones captured about Barbara Cowsill was the essence of her unconditional care for the people around her.

I dont know if it still exists but there was a place in Hollywood Ca called the Preview House where everyday people would gather and watch pilot shows and then the audience would vote on whether or not we liked the pilot. I was fortunate to be in the audience when they screened the pilot for the Partridge Family. I liked the show very much as well as the majority of the audience. The show ended up on television and was very successful. I like to feel that I was personally responsible in part for the show getting on the air. A great memory that I've never forgotten. I'm now 68 years old and its stuck with me all of these decades.

I was 10 when "The Partridge Family" premiered, and I started watching it because it was based on the Cowsills. And sadly, as the show took off, the Cowsills started to fade away from the charts. I loved them both, even though one was manufactured and the other The Real Deal.

From what I have learned just in the last two days is unlike the Partridge Family the Cowsills also had a Dad. He acted as their manager. He was mostly rude and demanding. One video I watched said the Cowsills were going to be booked on the Ed Sullivan Show multiple times. However, the Cowsill's dad decided to pick a fight with Ed Sullivan's son-in-law who was helping Ed run his TV show.
That cut the Cowsills down to just 2 appearances ever.

Of course, my mom knew who she was when the series premiered, but us kids, not so much, so my mom would talk about all of the great films Shirley had been in. The one film I'll never forget her always talking about was "Elmer Gantry," and when it appeared on the "late night movie of the week" lineup one time, she let us stay up late to watch it. So, I'll always remember Shirley for that particular film as well as her role as matriarch of the Partridge Family and, all through the 1970's, she did TV as well as print ads for the classic Sunbeam Mixmaster stand mixer, so I'll always remember her for that, too, because my mom always had a Sunbeam stand mixer of her own; they'd wear out after so many years, and before you knew it, there was a new one on the kitchen counter. Funny, the odd, sometimes stupid things you remember, lol.

**** JUMP TO THE START: 1:00 - This is really so endearing how Bob kinda sheepishly asking how much Shirley and the cast and crew knew about the Cowsills... At first, as the Q&A proceeds it seemed a little sad that here you have wonderfully talented Bob, with his and his family's huge accomplishments, kind of relegated to some tier-3 level where a "star" at that time had no earthly idea who they were or that they even existed at all.. Then slowly as this proceeds, and Bob keeps asking the right questions and draws information out from Shirley, Shirley discloses things that we might have thought that BOB knew --- but he didn't... Such as, that Shirley was informed she was playing their Mom, a real person, and the family of singers was all real, but the joy on Bob's face just to hear Shirley say "oh yeas well we knew what your Mom looked like, and all of you, because they brought in all these pictures of you" ---
It's kind of like the semi-deflated Bob at start re-inflates with the pride of knowing that the TV producers -- even though they passed on the actual Cowsills to play themselves, did in fact value their whole accomplishment and legacy or else the TV show would never have materialized.
It's a really sweet dialogue, with such mutual politeness and manners. I am really happy to have gotten to see this.
(But please cut the the preceding before 1:00 - it is really agitating. Please use the built-in UA-cam editor tool to cut it all out. It does it without re-uploading, without losing views, likes, subscribers. It would take maybe 3 minutes to fix this :)

I feel bad for Shirley because it could have been interpreted that she is on the hot seat or should feel guilty that the Cowsills weren't given Partridge Family royalties. That is so sad that the Cowsill family was kept from so much information when it was a show based off of them. I loved the Partridge Family as a kid but it would have had more meaning if the show had stated it was based of real Cowsill Family and helped their fame. Aside from Shirley and the manager, I don’t think the kids had any prior acting experience that the Cowsill children couldn’t have learned. Even if they had just let the real Susan in. At that young age, she could have started her acting career, or given the Cowsills credit.
