It's painfully expensive, but I think it would be the perfect device for me. I have a desktop at home, a laptop at the lab and an android tablet for reading papers. Between them, they are probably worth the same as a single new Surface Book 2. Yet the Surface Book 2 would probably beat each one of my devices at what they do. Especially that 15 inch screen which would be able to display papers at native size rather than smaller. That's really impressive.
I have one in the mail. Very excited to get it. Hopefully Monday, Tuesday at the latest. I am glad you liked it. I very much value your opinion. Love your videos, keep up the good work.
The original came out 2 years ago already?! It seems like it was just a couple months ago when they released the first one. Oh well, time does fly. Good video as usual Lisa!
Awesome review , I sold my surface 4 , my gaming laptop to have this , love the fact I can have all in one while travelling for work , I mean this can pretty much do it all
I am looking at this computer seriously as a drawing tool so I would love a video talking about the drawing experience and comparing it to the mobilestudio pro would be lovely as well. Fantastic review of the Surface Book 2!
This is the most in depth review on the surface book 2 I've seen so far. You actually did stuff like display measurements instead of just subjective stuff. Good job!
OK, I did buy it. Thanks again for such a detailed review. It was very helpful! I'm thrilled with the SB2. I love the 15" screen, and, yes, it's very powerful. I'm a pedestrian commuter who carries it to work every day and also use it on my lap a lot, and it's not too big for any of that. I use it with the dock as the base for a home multi-media studio. The pen works great for drawing, and the detachable screen is fantastic. It's great to have this much horsepower, too -- first time I've had this combination of portability and power so that I can use the same computer for the home studio and work/travel. I'm really happy with this computer. After reading reviews for a couple months, I didn't find anything that was even a close second for me. The cost is high, but it's excellent value for the money.
I have to say, this review is just top notch. I saw another channel which has millions of subscribers, it has nothing on this video. In comparison, other channels tend to mention basic specs with lack of knowledge on the product itself. Thank you and subscribed!
Typing this from my 15" SB2. I have never been happier with a tech purchase before. The display and performance is killer. The tablet portion is really light given its size. The 3:2 aspect ratio makes it so good for creative tasks and to read e-books. I can go on and on - highly recommended.
This is the first review where I've heard about how genius it is to keep the gpu apart from the cpu and other hot stuff. I had never thought about it before, but now I have so much respect for the thought Microsoft has put into its devices.
You make the best, most comprehensive youtube tech reviews. Really love this channel. I've read that the reason the USB-C doesn't have thunderbolt is due to restrictions in Intel CPUs -- there aren't enough lanes to support the dGPU, tablet, and thunderbolt 3. Thanks Lisa!
Im subbing...your reviews are essential. This was the best Surface Book 2 video bar none, and your Alienware 17R4 video killed it as well. Great stuff Lisa.
*PRO-TIP FOR ARTISTS & GRAPHIC DESIGNERS* If your using the Surface Book in that backwards mode Lisa showed at 4:26, you can buy a "Wacom Express Key Remote" (www.amazon.com/Wacom-Express-Remote-Cintiq-ACK411050/dp/B01AZ9PEKG) in order to get back all of your keyboard shortcuts! It also covers many of the functions that the Surface Dial does as well
please do the separate art video you are talking about This is the most complete review of the SB2 and it does justice to what the device is. Really loved this review
Wow! Thank you so much for this review! You are the first review that I've seen that went into some depth about the machine's performance as an art tablet! I would love to see you do a more detailed view about how it compares to waccom devices!
Re: The AC adaptor, I think all those companies do that because the system would thermal throttle down to that wattage in seconds anyways, so why ship a much larger brick. If the battery is draining I think they'll just TDP cap it.
I'm in Australia, so we can't get the 15 inch model, so I bought the 13.5 inch i7 1TB model based on this review. And I have to say that its exactly as I expected it to be - very happy with the unit and this review is spot on. Well done. PS. Love the T-Shirt!
I love your reviews. You are to the point and always manage to answer all my questions. I always go to you for reviews is possible. Thanks for the great infor.
One of these would be perfect, if only - MS offered a 28" monitor with the same specs as the Surface Studio monitor. So that It would drive dual 4500 x 3000 displays (3:2 aspect ratio). I run projects stuffed with designers, engineers and CFD guys, plus we are developing autonomous "stuff". A 3:2 ratio laptop with plenty of horsepower and dual large monitor capability would be really popular in a lot of tech sectors. And these are the guys who can afford to pay.
Hi Lisa, I wanted to thank you for your review on the new surface book 2 15-in. I always check your reviews before a decision and when you mentioned your concern about VR on this laptop I found what you said a little hard to believe. Surely Microsoft wouldn't develop a $2,500.00 laptop with a 1060 GTX graphic card and not make it VR compatible? Your review haunted me so this morning before the computer arrived I called Microsoft for a definitive answer on this question. After being on the phone for over an hour the conclusion was, some at Microsoft said it was VR compatible, others said it wasn't. They couldn't even agree amongst themselves and that was enough for me. LISA WAS RIGHT!! The SB2 arrived today and I'm returning it without opening the box. What a stupid move on Microsoft's part. I appreciate your work Lisa and the tech world wouldn't be the same without you. I needed the truth and I found it at Mobile TechReview. Have a great Christmas!
Wow! I'm saving up for one of these! I'm a musician -- and I have two computers now, as you outlined in the review. I have one hi-spec non-portable computer in my home studio, and a light travel computer (Surface Pro 3), which performs amazingly well for most but not all of what I do. I also have huge sample libraries -- so need to keep many gigabytes of data on an external drive that I manage between the two machines. The Surface Book seems like it will, finally be my chance to have only one computer that covers everything. I just spent $5000 for a gorgeous new accordion, so this computer looks like a bargain! I think I'll have the money saved by next summer. Thanks for a great review -- it was super-helpful!
a considerable percentage of mac/osx professional are already switching to SB1 and even more so this machine because it really is the better tool. Graphic Designers love touch screen and pen input; Photographers love the sd port, 3:2 aspect ratio and power for handling raw files; Architects love the power and pen input etc while Apple just seems to improves their emoji game (emoji touchbar, iPhone animoji.. you get the idea). There's really no comparison on what the better product is unless maybe Apple steps up their game with their new version of Macbook Pro, but if they keep following their usual patterns the only new features will be: thinner than ever, retina 2 with more resolution than ever, and now the trackpad is a touchbar to support even more emojis...
I really love that laptop, perfection! USB Type - C, 6GB dedicated GRAM, Windows Hello, Killer processor, Beautiful Screen. They got it right except for the price lol. Disappointing that they disabled VR support and the only thing missing is XCode :-P lol
You've given me the confidence to purchase 2 out of 3 computers thus far. The Asus Transformer Book T200 and now this. I just bought the 15 " with max specs yesterday. Haven't done much yet, but I'm extremely excited. Hopefully it's worth the price.
Thanks Lisa for those nice and detailed Reviews. Im using a Surface 4 Pro a long time now and like the advantages. Maybe thats my next one because I like to game more and more.
I've been an avid Mac fan for going on 15 years now, but in the last 4 months I have purchased a Surface Pro and now a 13.5-inch Surface Book 2. I think Apple's insistence on keeping touch off their computers is driving many fans to other brands. An iPad, as great a consumption device as it is, is not a work machine and the Touch Bar is too limiting. One thing you don't hear users saying too much is the fact the build quality of these Surface Books, at the very least, matches that of Apple's laptops. I'm very impressed.
Hi Lisa, you know the tech better than any other tech channel I know, could you please make a few videos on: What to expect from Surface Book 3? What to expect from Surface Pro 7?
I just got this , it’s great .Super fast and silent .Plays my games fine .It’s a bit expensive so I got a refurbished unit .Half the price of the Surface Book 3 . Tablet battery life alone is approx 2-3 hours .Best purchase ever !
Love the shirt. Thanks for the review. I just got one unexpectedly and i had no idea what they could do. I'm a traditional Mac user for the last 8 years and so i was kind of shocked i would go back to windows and they really pumped out something very wonderful here (After you install all the anti virus etc). All the usual usability issues in Microsoft are warmly still present of course. I cant wait to put this to use for photoshop, movies, usability wireframing and web development.
I'm been watching laptop reviews online for the past year, you are definitely one of the best reviewers I've seen. Thank you for what you do and the details you provide on your reviews. Are you going to review the Porsche Book One? Was on the fence about getting it, but decided to hold out for the Surface Book 2
Friendly correction: the $1,500 SB actually comes with a 7th gen (and hence dual core) cpu. all other models come with Intel's 8th gen quad core version. Thanks
Im coming from the future to tell that the silver magnesium in some parts might get black with the everyday usage (especially the usb ports and near the touchpad) and the battery life is still impressive. It didnt surpass the 500 cycles (both screen and base) since 2017 and still holding almost 7h straight (web browsing, office, streaming - not gaming). An incredible machine with some drawbacks.
Brilliant review. I think with this one, MS knocked it out of the park except for 1. Thunderbolt3 2. VR support 3. Power supply issue 4. at least 1000mA from the USB port on the power supply (charging my phone on 500mA takes for ever) I am still on the 1st Surface Book with GPU but theres no question to what I would upgrade next. The price is nothing to sneeze at but if you want top of the line, you pay for it. A Mac Pro brings a lot less to the table and costs similarly.
I first was deadset on getting this device for all it has to offer on a great price range and because it's portable. But then I changed my mind and was seriously so close to buying a 5k iMac with the Huion Pro 20". After so much research and deliberation I had finally decided on this device, the Surface Book, because I was getting the power, memory, and storage I need WITH a screen I can use to create and render. Everything is need would be in this small device.
Nice review as always, but I still prefer the Macbook Pro for my uses. - Much better resale value - Legendary reliability, unparalleled customer service - Better speakers - Better touchpad - TB3 - Brighter screen - iPhone connectivity (iMessage, handoff, air drop etc) - Would use tablet 0% of the time, and a wobbly hinge is no good in laptop mode - MB is expensive too, but can be had for much cheaper w/ common sales since its launch Also, I don't game much anymore. 1060/ 1050 is nice, but is crippled by proprietary drivers to get it working as a tablet. This does not bode well for future updates and support. Also was that finicky PSU issue. If I were getting a windows laptop, this would be a top choice, but I'd still probably wait for the 2018 XPS refresh. Ultimately my first two points are huge when I'm dropping this much on a laptop.
Thanks for a good review! I had to painfully watch all the "reviews" which don't really go in depth at all, and seem to talk about things I already know. Definitely glad I became poor so I couldn't buy the SB performance base earlier this year, and now in a position to buy this little beast. :3
love this woman, no bullshit, just straight to the damn point and deep hardware analysis that go beyond "it has a good CPU".
Lisa is probably the most objective techie out there
1. Awesome Review
2. Super cute bubbly personality
3. Best t-shirts on www
Best review so far, every other one I have watched has been lazy. This one finally convinced me that it’s the right product for me.
Manuel Rivera Do you make shoes too? Like the one's in Coco?
It's painfully expensive, but I think it would be the perfect device for me.
I have a desktop at home, a laptop at the lab and an android tablet for reading papers. Between them, they are probably worth the same as a single new Surface Book 2.
Yet the Surface Book 2 would probably beat each one of my devices at what they do. Especially that 15 inch screen which would be able to display papers at native size rather than smaller.
That's really impressive.
YEdwardP you can find them cheaper now on eBay
It’s amazing
Holy crap, you are good at reviewing. Enthusiasm without shouting at the camera and a nice speaking pace.
I have one in the mail. Very excited to get it. Hopefully Monday, Tuesday at the latest. I am glad you liked it. I very much value your opinion. Love your videos, keep up the good work.
MTR, your reviews are thorough, in depth, and knowledgeable. I'm really impressed.
Holy cow one of the most in depth reviews, and still manages to cover all the important points.
The original came out 2 years ago already?! It seems like it was just a couple months ago when they released the first one. Oh well, time does fly. Good video as usual Lisa!
Informative, detailed reviews.
But let's face it, we all come here to see what tshirt Lisa has on this time.
Love your tshirt
Awesome review , I sold my surface 4 , my gaming laptop to have this , love the fact I can have all in one while travelling for work , I mean this can pretty much do it all
I can't believe they 1) didn't give it enough power to run under mixed load, 2) pretended they intended it, and 3) don't have an option with tb3
I am looking at this computer seriously as a drawing tool so I would love a video talking about the drawing experience and comparing it to the mobilestudio pro would be lovely as well. Fantastic review of the Surface Book 2!
The SB2 has a CPU TDP shift on the 15 inch version. They changed the TDP from 15W to 20W, that is why it maintains better boosts.
This is the most in depth review on the surface book 2 I've seen so far. You actually did stuff like display measurements instead of just subjective stuff. Good job!
Great review Lisa, been waiting for this one ! And yes, separate art video please
OK, I did buy it. Thanks again for such a detailed review. It was very helpful! I'm thrilled with the SB2. I love the 15" screen, and, yes, it's very powerful. T-shirt and review on point, as always.

YES, art review please :)
Lisa is one of the most natural reviewer I have seen on UA-cam.
Watching Lisa draw on tablets is like watching an asmr video. So relaxing. Please do a separate video on just drawing on the tablet!
"Hello I can see you" Entertaining and very helpful review, thank you!
Great review, thank you. Yes, I'd like to see an art review.
Im subbing...your reviews are essential. This was the best Surface Book 2 video bar none, and your Alienware 17R4 video killed it as well. Great stuff Lisa.
*PRO-TIP FOR ARTISTS & GRAPHIC DESIGNERS*

Pro tip for grammar: you're*
Great points were pointed out, best review of this on UA-cam so far. Great video Lisa and love the T-shirts.
i think we need to see that "art video" that you would create to see how much does the improved gitter issue affects your workflow.
I had been waiting for your review on the Surface Book 2. Thank you.
Your reviews are absolutely spot on.
Excellent review, one of the best UA-cam-tech channels
Lisa, your reviews are wonderfully balanced. Keep up the great work.
This is the third review that I see from your channel and I am quite satisified of how informative and usefull they are. Good work! :D
i would love a 2nd part about art
Shut up and take my money!!

"the price is a lil bit painful, thou" :D
it hurts so much Lisa
Seth Setiadha yea $4000 is going to fly out from the air
I like your videos because they REEEEEALLY.... go in depth and I can put my own background music to it.
Thanks Lisa! HP ZBook X2 will be an interesting competitor
Your T-shirt Is Am-a-Zn!!!
Kwistenbiebel200 no the letters I used are in the periodic table
I think it means Oh, my god!
Love Lisa videos very much and her style too
Amazon
please do the separate art video you are talking about
This is the most complete review of the SB2 and it does justice to what the device is. Really loved this review
By far the best tech review channel out there
thank you for letting me know you can plug charger into just the tablet, no other reviews ive seen stated that and I was wondering
Anthony Rizzo ikr! I had no idea either. Thought you were just stuck with 2 hours of battery.
Wow! Thank you so much for this review! You are the first review that I've seen that went into some depth about the machine's performance as an art tablet! I would love to see you do a more detailed view about how it compares to waccom devices!
Great review. Lisa, your tech channel is one of the best on youtube.
Re: The AC adaptor, I think all those companies do that because the system would thermal throttle down to that wattage in seconds anyways, so why ship a much larger brick. If the battery is draining I think they'll just TDP cap it.
“That just sounds like a lame excuse to me.”
I love how your reviews are brutally honest. I hate when reviews tiptoe around the flaws of a device.
What a thorough review: never disappointed with valuable points she mentions. Love this channel
Awesome review. I would like to see a separate video of this device being used for art.
The most underrated UA-cam channel.
Please do an art review, I'm interested. 😊 Thanks!
I'm in Australia, so we can't get the 15 inch model, so I bought the 13.5 inch i7 1TB model based on this review. And I have to say that its exactly as I expected it to be - very happy with the unit and this review is spot on. Well done. PS. Love the T-Shirt!

Watched every minute of it! You alwayd make your videos very interesting. You're the best Lisa! ❤

I just spent $5000 for a gorgeous new accordion, so this computer looks like a bargain! I think I'll have the money saved by next summer. Thanks for a great review -- it was super-helpful!
Thanks for the review, Lisa. You've got my vote for an art focused video!
a considerable percentage of mac/osx professional are already switching to SB1 and even more so this machine because it really is the better tool. love your reviews, very indepth. i also like how you touch all areas such as drawing and gaming.
Just a small correction. The base model (13") has last year's CPU so it's only dual core. Lovely review as always
Lisa! I just bought one of these, in part because of your helpful tech reviews to someone who knows zip. Thank you so much :-)
Awesome review as always Lisa ! Keep them coming
Thanks Lisa.
It really is the ultimate in mobile computing.
Perhaps a bit more than I need but wow.
I really love that laptop, perfection! USB Type - C, 6GB dedicated GRAM, Windows Hello, Killer processor, Beautiful Screen. They got it right except for the price lol. Disappointing that they disabled VR support and the only thing missing is XCode :-P lol
It would've been perfection if it had Thunderbolt 3 and if it wouldn't discharge while plugged in while gaming.
Not perfect. No TB3 and the headphone jack is poorly placed.
Always look forward to your reviews
You've given me the confidence to purchase 2 out of 3 computers thus far. The Asus Transformer Book T200 and now this. I just bought the 15 " with max specs yesterday. Haven't done much yet, but I'm extremely excited. Hopefully it's worth the price.
had a chance to use this machine. it is the gold standard for windows laptops/2 in 1. the trackpad was so smooth and great performance.
Thank you so much for your time.
Hi Lisa, you know the tech better than any other tech channel I know, could you please make a few videos on: What to expect from Surface Book 3? What to expect from Surface Pro 7?
Same as me😂
Your videos are great and in-depth. Thank you Lisa 😍 "Hello, I can see you"
I just got this , it’s great .Super fast and silent .Plays my games fine .It’s a bit expensive so I got a refurbished unit .Half the price of the Surface Book 3 .
Awesome review Lisa, like always , you are the Wonder Woman of Tech !!!
I'm been watching laptop reviews online for the past year, you are definitely one of the best reviewers I've seen. Thank you for what you do and the details you provide on your reviews. Are you going to review the Porsche Book One? Was on the fence about getting it, but decided to hold out for the Surface Book 2
Solid. Glad to see a 15" version.
Excellent review as always Lisa, great work! Just one little thing, isn't the 15" 's CPU set at 20 watts and not 15 like the 13"?
Ecirroh yes its 20 wat cpu in 15 inch model, Lisa made couple of mistakes here. Also i5 cpu on 13 inch is 7gen dual core
Friendly correction: the $1,500 SB actually comes with a 7th gen (and hence dual core) cpu. all other models come with Intel's 8th gen quad core version. Thanks
Art video please! 😁👍🏻
Yes, please do a review on art for the surface book 2. Thank you Lisa!!!
I think with this one, MS knocked it out of the park except for
1. Thunderbolt3
2. VR support
3. Power supply issue
4. at least 1000mA from the USB port on the power supply (charging my phone on 500mA takes for ever)
I am still on the 1st Surface Book with GPU but theres no question to what I would upgrade next. The price is nothing to sneeze at but if you want top of the line, you pay for it. A Mac Pro brings a lot less to the table and costs similarly.
I first was deadset on getting this device for all it has to offer on a great price range and because it's portable. absolutely love your tee. great review!
She does great reviews. Why doesn't she get more attention? More people should watch her.
Ehh I’m a bit hesitant - should I pick this up? It should be nice for gaming, 4k60 video editing
super expensive, but I was in the Microsoft store the other day and the detachable screen was just shockingly light. Really great product design by MS
Nice review as always, but I still prefer the Macbook Pro for my uses.
- Much better resale value
- Legendary reliability, unparalleled customer service
- Better speakers
- Better touchpad
- TB3
- Brighter screen
- iPhone connectivity (iMessage, handoff, air drop etc)
- Would use tablet 0% of the time, and a wobbly hinge is no good in laptop mode
- MB is expensive too, but can be had for much cheaper w/ common sales since its launch
Also, I don't game much anymore.
Hey Lisa, amazing in-depth video, loved it. Are you going to get this for yourself?? Also, would love the art video.
anish sachdeva he name is mobile tech reviewer!
Another great review, Lisa!
awesome reviews i really do enjoy your content much better then say the top dogs out there cant wait until you hot 5m subs you deserve it
Thanks for a good review! I had to painfully watch all the "reviews" which don't really go in depth at all, and seem to talk about things I already know. Definitely glad I became poor so I couldn't buy the SB performance base earlier this year, and now in a position to buy this little beast. :3
thanks Lisa another great video!!
This was very informative. What do you attribute more towards the drawing improvements: the new pen or pc?
Great review Lisa. I love your videos
