  • The Band of the Royal Artillery was the first official and permanent military band, being formed in 1557.
For this recording, the Band was presumably conducted by Major Edward Stretton, who was Director of Music from 1907 to 1936. During those years, the Band comprised over 100 performers, but it is apparent that only a fraction of that number formed part of the Band for the purposes of early recording.

Well mate, you got me with that label! A rather nice and well recorded piece too, I have to say. Interestingly, you may be aware that a record company with the same name specialising in classical music commenced operations in Denmark in 1989!

It's the only one I've ever found - and I think it might be the only one I have of the Royal Artillery Band, which in those days seems to have recorded for small labels. The Coldstream Guards certainly did well with its long-running G&T and HMV series.
