What a wonderful surprise to wake up to! I was brought up on the BBC 1966 series (some on my channel) by my mother. Her father, born in 1895, was a big G&S fan and saw many of the "greats" of the 1920s on the stage. He had an amazing memory for the detail of the stagecraft and later contributed to Jane Stedman's biography of Gilbert. His crowning moment, though, was meeting the Gilberts' adopted daughter, Nancy McIntosh, at Grims Dyke shortly after Lady Gilbert's death. Gilbert had bequeathed his large model of HMS Queen to the Science Museum in London and it was grandad's job to go and collect it. He must have told Nancy of his interest because she gave him a studio photo of Gilbert which I still have.
Beautifully transferred, as ever. Thank you.

@webrarian Thanks: and some great background and memories there! I've quite enjoyed revisiting this recording: perhaps I will at some stage try one or two of the other early sets.

Amazing! Very enjoyable. This is the first time listened to this since July 1975, when my friend at school would play the Decca LP series of Savoy Operas on the school gramophone enough for the whole school to be acquainted with them! I found I knew the music and anticipated each new section!
It may be your skill in transferring the sides, but this has a continuity that is both surprising and satisfying. It must have been a lot of work and all for something so far from fashionable.
Sullivan was a great composer who made a unique contribution to music, but Gilbert was a remarkable social historian with his observant commentary and acerbic wit in the words.
    Such under-estimated music.
    Best wishes from George

I plan to upload it tomorrow. The transfer is done: all I need to do is to get together the details for the notes.

The later electrical recording is certainly much better cast, but this is an interesting acoustic recording and Derek Oldham was a bit of heartthrob in his day.

@karldelavigne8134 You're right about the casting, although the 1928 Yeomen was, from memory, recorded at a time when the principals of the main D'Oyly Carte Company were unavailable, which meant that we still missed out on hearing Lytton and Lewis, etc. Also, there was a problem with recording quality in the case of one of the sessions. Fortunately, Oldham appeared in both the 1920 and the 1928 recordings: in very fresh voice in the former.
