I have a Honda Element that I car camp in...bike inside and me inside on a raised platform bed, all my gear underneath. I am 6'4"...and it works great for a smaller SUV.
Good stuff - I spent months MTB car camping this year. I found Trailforks invaluable in finding out of the way places to car camp near trail heads. Also, you are going to need to develop a system for taking care of business in the morning eventually - it's not always possible to find somewhere near a toilet. Another thing is to rig up some kind of curtains so you can sleep in brightly lit areas and for privacy. Cheers.
keehotee good tips! Ya I meant to bring my car camping sleeping mask and make that a part of the video, but I forgot it! Definitely needed when the sun rises at like 5am during the summer haha
Good video... 2 additional points to make life on the road a little softer. 1) I have a 12V outlet & cooler in the back of my SUV. 2) I have a small MEC first aid kit that I add bug spray, bear repellent, scissors, and a few other items to. Aeropress coffee maker is a necessity. I'm also wondering, where do you buy "used kids" from??? :)
Good tips! I always have bear spray and a first aid kit on me as well, which lends some piece of mind. Love the Aeropress. Well it's not a very good shop... we've had Casey for only 9 years and they won't even let us return him!!
I liked my Aero Press and still use it to make cappuccinos for the GF but personally I like my fancy coffee from my Chemex poor over... also portable and easy to clean up.
Step 1 Send It can't go wrong with the chemex either! I'd be worried about breaking it while on the road though. Have you ever made coffee with the Aeropress using the inverted method? That's where it's at.
for sure, I like it both ways... the coffee that is. I suppose your right about the chemex, it is very fragile but once someone pointed out the "plasticky" flavor from the aero press, it’s all I could taste... I’m a coffee snob now I guess, haha
As could be called: a 'mobile metal tent with (noisy) AC, radio, power, etc' I've done the chaining the bike to the alloy wheel thing a few times too! I've a VW Golf Estate (station wagon in north America?) so smaller, even at 6'3" still plenty roomy enough. I sleep with my head at the rear of the car (use the side doors for access) so with a slim sleeping mat (as in the vid) I can sleep under the removable retractable boot cover which acts as an effective blackout (instead of a facemask etc). Just I might've 'slept in' a couple of times because of it, so an alarm clock may be needed. With the passenger seat folded back I can slip forward into it for breakfast still in my sleeping bag When its really cold, 'slipper socks' over normal thickish socks in your sleeping bag, thermals/long johns as an under layer, a wooly hat and sleep with your sleeping bag opening to the side/or below you can make the difference. I'm sure there are better ways .. My issues so far are: Showering? I'm not a morning showerer if I'm MTBing, but after a ride I'm sweaty. Wet wipes just aren't the same .. Number Twos? I've not much 'backup' space in me .. Water? Probably a question of being prepared with big enough container Power? Got to remember to have everything charging when the car is driving (I don't video though) Parkup location? I've no window tinting, a van has privacy upsides here Moisture? With sweaty and wet post ride clothing with overnight condensation I could do with something to keep the moisture and smells at bay
Sterling Spriggs from what I hear, you've got some great riding within a couple hours drive! This is the closest mountain to where I live and it's about 3 hours away. I usually drive 5+ hours to ride though. Gotta make it work however you can!
I wish I had an easy answer for you! It really depends on what you want to ride (or what terrain you have in your immediate area)and your budget. Honestly the best thing to do would be to go into your local shop and ask them the same question. They'll be able to give you solid recommendations based on your exact situation/location. Bike shops are invaluable for these kinds of things, plus they can set you up with a beginner group ride to get you into the trails with other people of the same skill level. Hope that helps at least a little bit! Cheers
Unfortunately no, or at least I can't/won't! Bikes have way too many sharp bits and grease everywhere for me to put it in the front seat. Plus, the bikes I ride are pretty long, so I doubt they'd even fit with the wheels off, crossways in the front.
I use these when sleeping in my truck and want the windows open. theskeeterbeater.com/ I have a Nissan Xterra and use a truck bed air mattress made for a Nissan Frontier and it fits like a glove. Good video man! These are things not really talked about.
You're just one of those UA-camrs I have to watch while eating cereal.
I know it sounds weird but trust me it's kinda relaxing lol
Haha why thank you. I think? :D
You looked nice and cozy: t-shirt, zip up hoodie, windbreaker, fleece, and denim jacket
Haha it was needed. I was freezing! :D

Ya I looked into those! Such a great vehicle for this kind of thing.

Great vid!
1 Tip- Goal Zero SOLAR CHARGERS! There worth the money.
They make phone chargers and huge bricks for charging
Delta Dog I'll have to look into that! Been thinking of grabbing a little solar charger for a while now.
This is what I'm about to do!
you should see how transamerican and transeurope bicycles pack for super long trips
Man I wish I could experience those beautiful mountain trails you go on. Can’t experience those things because I live in Florida 😭 keep up the content

Sterling Spriggs I live in the mountains and have always wanted to ride the dunes in Florida lol.
Johnny Utah the grass is always greener on the other side, I guess.
Wow! Thanks for this very helpful video Ryan!
Good to hear! Thanks for checking it out.
The Loam Ranger what kind of first aid are you carrying out in the sticks?
Todd Uncyclist i should have mentioned that! I've got a kit in the rear door with wraps, disinfectant, Advil, bandaids etc.
Really interesting video! Best
UNBOX thanks a lot!

Thanks!
Good advice! Thanks man!
You bet! Cheers dude
Hey for ventilation through the windows try getting a screen/canopy from www.roadieproducts.com they should fit your vehicle.
A rooftop tent is a good thing to think about if your car is small
Damn good video bud!
Thanks man! Glad you liked it.
Great. I have a camper and now, armed with this knowledge, I now need to camp out of my wife’s car.
Haha ya who needs comfort and convenience?
Which Transcend coffee should we try?
Depends on what you like, but I always go for whatever they have from Ethiopia.
If I wanted to get into mountain biking what kind of bike should I get? ps. I know it would be a mountain bike I mean a brand or exact bike.

Thanks, it was quite useful.
@Fine Films maybe?
couldn't you just keep your bike on the front seats
Unfortunately no, or at least I can't/won't! Bikes have way too many sharp bits and grease everywhere for me to put it in the front seat. Plus, the bikes I ride are pretty long, so I doubt they'd even fit with the wheels off, crossways in the front.
