  • I thought I'd demonstrate the method I use for undercutting the fret crown or "nipping" the tang for fretting necks with binding or "blind" fret slots done on a CNC machine
All you need is a good mill file, pliers, and a block of hardwood you can cut a groove into. Watch to find out more…

Elegant approach! Couldn’t you save the fret-marking step by penciling a mark on the block?

wouldnt it be better to avoid losing any of the string vibration into the fretboard because that would translate into decreased sustain?

Can't stand these talkers. A 10min talk for a 10 seconds procedure. Come on!!

OK here is a mod. Cut the end of your block to the desired angle you want the end bevel to be. When you have files all the tangs, rotate the block in the vice 90 deg and file all your bevels. That way you never damage the edge of the fret board trying to do that job after the frets are in.

nice work , but it's hard to do a stainless steel fret wire in this way.

Better than another $65 to the Stew-Mac fund.

Try it the other way round, a slot for the tang. Then you don’t get it rolling around and don’t crush the tangs with your pliers.

Neither quick, nor easy. I agree with some other comments. Likes to hear himself talk. Better idea is to cut out the tang and then use this method to clean up with file. Otherwise, you fret job will take 3 days.

That was high KUDOS for the file... do you know who the manufacturer is? The best ideas are the simplest ones... KISS... thanks.

I would just buy a fret tang nipper. Faster, easier, clean and not much money if you build a number of guitars.

Nice trick! I've modified a few files by removing the teeth on one edge with a belt sander. I have a little square file that I use for Strat nut slots that only cuts down and doesn't remove material from the sides.

Which Nicholson mill file are you using? Seems like a nice one with smooth on one side and rougher on the other. Thanks!

Thank you. Love your CNC fret boards. I need to consider those for my builds now. I don't like binding but I love this!

That file made it incredibly easy to do. Do you by any chance know what the grade of the file is? Thanks!
