    Great video. The flow worked much better with the ol' thumbs up at the beginning. :)

    I made the highline guitars jig to use with a dremmel that I already had. Just had to buy a small dremmel bit for a few £. Works great, fast and cheap considering I already had everything bar the bit. If I was doing lots of guitars I’d invest in some top end nippers but for a few guitars a year it’s a no brainier.

    Since we're talking about tools at various budgets here, it's worth mentioning #4 can be built relatively easily at one's shop. If one can do their own binding, then should have a breeze making that jig. But if it's in anyone's budget, the nippers are great. I use the ones from Sintoms with great success. There is also a separate attachment they sell for repeatable depths of cuts. However once you add up the price of those two, then may as well get the Stewmac deluxe one for the price point... hard to believe I just said that about a Stewmac tool...for damn sake they're still $80 cutters!! Anyways, great video!

    Jescar Evo Gold Fret wire is no longer available per Jescar. They can not get the materials to make them any more

    Will the LMI work with SS frets? won't it wear down on the file quckily? Isn't harder with SS frets ?Just wondering ;-)

  • @rauschguitars

    I modified some cheap tin snips, it cost about €15 and 5 minutes with a file. It's good enough as a beginner tool, but I'll probably invest in something better in future. This is a nice overview of the options available, thanks!

    You never draw THE File backwards in Contact with THE material! You dull THE edge on THE File. Elementary.

  • @troyclayton
    @troyclayton 3 роки тому

    Thanks for showing all the ways. I'll start with a file and see what happens. Beau Hannam showed the new nipper (I just met her) a few weeks ago. I'll have to see how tedious the file is. I'm known for embracing tedium- often stupidly. The whole "I hardly even know/just met her/him/ya" joke is a long time favorite of mine. Sadly, it dropped in popularity like 20 years ago up here. To get a response nowadays I have to drop the big one, and say something ending in 'rectum'...
    edit: I guess it's not really the same, but as close as I can get so someone will play along.

    Number 5. A cutoff wheel in your dremel tool !

    • @mgcnashville6615
      @mgcnashville6615 3 роки тому +1

      I didn’t have great luck w that. A bench grinder did the trick very well with ss frets.

    • @briankientz2926
      @briankientz2926 3 роки тому

      I turn the dremel down to a lower speed, and it's two slick cuts on each end to do the job. I tried the grinder route too didn't feel comfortable to me. I guess the best tool to use for fret ends is the one you like the best!!!

      @mgcnashville6615 3 роки тому +1

      @@briankientz2926 true. I also didn’t have the right bit for the Dremel. And was using ss frets. Bench grinder does require focus. I put on a depth stop, and just made sure to be careful.

    The deluxe ones are out of stock. You must have convinced everyone to pick up a set. Lucky enough I already have an account with them and all I had to do was hit the notification button that they will email me when they come back in stock.
    I enjoyed this video I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.

    I have the original fret nipper. Stewmac has the new fret nipper, they just got it back in stock. But, was tossing it up on whether or not I should get the newer one from StewMac or the one from LMI. But, the LMI one sealed the deal. It gets the job done and there's hardly any finishing work to be done after.

  • @LeviBulger
    @LeviBulger 2 роки тому

    I've been using my Dremel and a jig I made for loading up a fret and sliding it into the Dremel bit to nip the tang in half a second. Works great. Downside is that sometimes if you aren't careful you can nip way more than you wanted to.

    I have to say when I heard you use evo fretwire. It's that good that you just see most people use it for their instruments. On electric I like to use jumbo frets but in all honesty I have never wondered how it's different on an acoustic instrument. Do people use different fret size on acoustic or does the majority go with a standard fret size?

      @@zapa1pnt well.. with the right wheel, not really. I mean you can touch it while it’s running and it won’t cut you. Would be pretty difficult to do any serious harm as long as you’re using the right disc. Can also set up a depth stop, and use something to hold the fret, if that’s a concern.
