    I am Japanese.
    When you come to Japan, the first place you should go is an electric shop.
    Therefore, it would be a good idea to get a device called "POKE TALK" that converts your native language into Japanese and speaks with your voice.
    With this device, you can communicate by 'voice'ing the language to the other person instead of expressing it in writing.
    Supports many languages.
    French, Italian, German, Chinese, Korean, Japanese... Translate into any language and tell the other party by "voice".
    A perfect device for those who love to travel to different countries.
    A big hit in Japan. This is due to the rapid increase in the number of tourists from abroad.
    It is a very useful device for those who like to travel abroad.
    The size is about palm size.

    It is considered rude behaviour to eat and walk in Japan. I think because it can lead to you bumping into someone and spilling on them. That was the best explanation I heard while I lived there for a year. Happy Travels

    One of my fave google translate interactions with someone in japan was in a restaurant where they had run out of pasta and they had google translated their sentence to “the noodles have disappeared”…it ended up being the saying for the rest of the trip with my friends 😂😂😂

      This makes two of us. I ended up watching this and others they made. I will be traveling to Tokyo next March to run the Marathon. Our group is from Los Angeles and we've traveled Europe last year to run. This, However is new territory. My question is I see some wearing masks outside and some don't. Is is mandatory. I want to make sure I blend in with their current requirements. And no eating while walking thats something I thought I read somewhere else but I now I see its true.

      Hi Lorraine :) So awesome you'll run a marathon in Tokyo. The official mask rules can be found here: www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/covid-19/mask.html we've been trying to follow what others around us are doing also, so we don't make anyone uncomfortable, but currently it seems that most people are wearing their masks out and about and indoors, except while eating or drinking

    Ramen used to be a "rough" meal, like for blue-collared workers kind of image. Those panels between customers were invented to make it easier for ladies to come and enjoy by themselves.
    Culturally, it is considered shabby, lack of etiquette and an indecent act to eat while walking. Especially in a crowded city like Tokyo, it is possible to bump into another person. It is more acceptable in the countryside. And also, I think that those instruction boards are for preventing tourists from littering. Trash cans are always provided at such places.

    • @LisaAndJosh
      @LisaAndJosh  Рік тому +1

      This is really helpful context, thanks for sharing this. Had no idea what those labels were invented for
      And good to know about walking and eating! A side benefit for us has been more appreciation for our food (and not eating so fast 😂) but we can definitely see the cleanliness part, especially compared to where we come from

    The trick to get rid of coins is day of something is 540 yen, give a 1000 yen bill plus 60 yen in coins so you'll get one coin back.

  • @AmbientWalking
    @AmbientWalking Рік тому +33

    My de-facto cheapo strategy when I was living in Tokyo was to head to any of the numerous 'Yayoi Ken' restaurants and order the cheapest 'ichiju sansai', a set meal (which is either grilled miso mackerel or deep fried chicken) with unlimited top ups (it's self service, so don't feel shy) of plain, white rice. I would basically fast till as long as I can till about 3-4 pm (there was once I hit a 6 pm record, but it was the summer and I did nothing but hang out at Tower Records listening to records) and head to Yayoiken and eat 6 bowls of rice or something. It's immensely fulfilling for a mere 590 yen. The meal will last you an entire day. Comes with free cold unlimited green tea, pickles and miso soup too. It gets pretty packed during rush hours, but at other times, you can sit there as long as you wish without anyone bothering you, which basically means you can eat as much rice as you like. Some of these branches (like the one in Ginza, several in Shinjuku) are open 24 hours!!!!! That's insanely awesome!!! : )

    Great Video! My wife said that the eating and walking is not forbidden in Japan normally. I never heard of it either. Japanese don´t do it by themselves. NEVER.BUT she said, maybe too many foreigners threw their garbage aways or crushed into other people with the food... So they started forbidden it...

      super helpful context, thank you! we figured this was a rule in popular tourist spots especially with lots of food stalls nearby. we don't dare walk and eat at the same time now, but we do find that it makes us appreciate our food more! :) :)

    4:13 In Japan, "eating while walking" or "walking indoors in shoes" is as vulgar as "burping in front of the other person's face," and is therefore prohibited throughout the country. On streets with many tourists of different cultures and food stalls, "Please do not walk around with food" or "Strictly shoes off" signs are posted in many languages. Enjoy the cultural differences🍙🍙

    • @LisaAndJosh
      @LisaAndJosh  Рік тому +2

      this is so helpful to know, thank you! we wondered if it was maybe to ensure people don't litter and so people don't eat in front of other restaurants. we're enjoying this new difference because we find that it helps us slow down and actually enjoy the food slowly and not just keep moving ☺️

    Eating while walking can also cause a lot of litter dropping. You are usually always considered to consume food & drinks directly at the place of purchase - thats why it can also be very hard to find trash cans. Also people don't pay attention where they walk. The rest (rude, time management etc.) was already mentioned.

    Just came back from a week in Tokyo and I want to turn around & go back tomorrow! I did go solo and unlike you two I'd never been. So I got crazy lost a few times and didn't find the restaurants you show here but all the food everywhere was SOoo good! Omg. The trains you did make seem easy were pretty confusing to me, but one can learn. Yes, Google maps satellite view made getting around easier. It's such an amazing country! Your videos are helpful.
