- Australian NBN FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) Connection Upgrade: IS IT WORTH IT vs FTTN (Fibre to the node) or FTTB (Fibre to the building). An nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection is used in circumstances where a fibre optic line will be run from the nearest available fibre node, directly to your premises. All types of nbn network connections that utilise a physical line running to the premises are considered Fixed Line connections.
FTTP connections require an nbn network device to be installed inside your home. This device requires power to operate and can only be installed by an approved nbn installer or phone and internet provider.
*This NBN FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) process, in my case - Took 6 weeks.

📌After all of what I've checked out SINCE being connected to 'Fibre To The Premises' (FTTP), it seems to be in a way, a bit of a scam! Nearly all ISP's NOW have 100/20 speeds (unless you want to pay WAY more per month!) - Seems to me, that the idea behind it, is that everyone's more or less limited in the amount of data that can be used and not shaped by the NBN network - My advice NOW, to people who already have a good speeds but not YET connected to FTTP: STAY with what you have, at least until (I predict) all ISP's change your plan without you having a say in the matter!!

It appears like a lot of work and expense was carried out by the NBN contractors for very little gain in overall download and upload speeds. Please keep us updated if any further changes to your speeds come about in the future . Thank you for making this video in detail, explaining the whole process you went through. 👍👍👍
Yep, and at (in my case), an conservatively estimated $10,000 per household - it's a huge waste of money for people like myself, who WERE on a high speed plan already!

As I said, it started OFF Faster, then a week later, it all came down in speed! 🙄

I currently have FTTN. The node pit is only 10 metres from my house, so very minimal copper wire used. I'm not expecting a lot by installing FTTP but it's not costing me anything so that's good. All my speedtests return 108Mbps download and 18Mbps upload.
Yeah, not likely to VASTLY improve download speed, but you may be surprised! BEWARE though; in my case and it seems most others; once your ISP changes you to a FTTP plan: Your *UPLOAD* speed will likely be barely only 20MBPS, like mine has dropped way down to! - It's something *none* seem to be making cutomers aware of! (until _AFTER_ they change!)😡😁🙄

Everything plays a part. I am on FTTN and get 105/ 25 and about 360mt from Node. About to get FTTP and expect to get 450/50 as that is the highest plan for this provider.
As a ex Telstra tech will make sure they clean clean clean the fibre ends ( if you have done fibre before, 3 times the clean for every end means something ) 😏.

Gidday. After negotiating with my ISP, they bumped up my plan for 6 months, so I now avg 275mbps down, but still only 20 up.
I’ve had 2 visits the one that goes through the wall, the second from the pit to my house and then when they were finished they a left a big hole in my wall m, and I was told by the tech it was right to go, but all I get is a red optical light and no internet, and I contacted my telco and I have no idea when there going to finish it

@5:40 if you wanted conduit you should have pre installed some for them to use, they only have to use 3m anymore expense they can decline to use
I had no say in the matter: this was installed by the 1st NBN contractor to attend my premises.
In the country where i live, they are in the process of rolling out FTTP, but right now, only 10% or so of the country has it
We currently have an FTTC connection (which uses the telephone line from the street cabinet to bring the connection to our house), we have a 50/10 connection if I recall correctly (the other options being 40/10 or 87/18 (or whatever it is), very few providers here offer the 50/10 option, but regardless of who you pay, the connection comes from the same infrastructure (every ISP here is essentially not much more than a reseller)
Although the ISP we are with currently offers free upgrades to FTTP when it becomes available if you are on the 87/18 (or whatever) plan (this ISP essentially owns the company that handles the infrastructure)
Would that be Canada by chance? Here in Australia, the old 'twisted pair' copper phone lines WERE all owned by 'Telstra' (Formerly 'Telecom'), and everyone else (resellers) used their lines as the backbone, but since this fibre-optic rollout is by the government owned 'NBN Company'; I'd say NOW, it's the majority of internet supply in most areas (other than satellite in very remote ones), and as in your case; all ISP's are merely resellers. The NBN upgrades are also free to us, as it's government, not the ISP who does it. 👍👌

@@SteveMack for a period of time there was what they called “G-fast”, which allowed speeds of around 300 down over an FTTC type of connection
I will admit, there is one ISP which has its own infrastructure, but they seem to only provide service in a fraction of the country (im not sure which areas they do provide service to, but near the southern side of the scottish border (the area where i live), they seem to be non existent, but there again, it seems everyone in london thinks england ends at Newcastle upon Tyne)
I did notice that new Fibre equipment seems to be getting installed in the nearest town to where i live, so maybe it won’t be much longer to wait before FTTP will be available in the village where i live

On upload speeds, the NBN (infrastructure) is not the limiting factor. I'd say "retailers" have made the calculation that domestic users dont require high upload speeds. There must be cost saving at their end in this decision.
Aussie BB offers a 100/40 plan at around +$10/month on top of their 100/20 plan.
You can also look into business plans which are "symmetric", eg 250/250. All you need is an ABN and add a minimum $100 per month on top of a top tier domestic plan. It all comes down to what you're willing to pay for.
Yes, exactly - After going to the Telecommunications Ombudsman; my ISP has negotiated a 6 month deal with me; currently, I get 275MBPS download, but still only around 20 UP! Stinks, but I'll look around in 6 months to check the plans again then. 👌👍
Looks like they (and you) went through a lot of work to get that upgrade...just hope you are happy with it all in the end...you could either mention to them about the gap where water may get in or plug it yourself...wasps & frogs will make it there new home...I have only wireless NbN ...says in speed test its average 25 mb Download-3.5 up load...some days are faster...But in real Terms it will only download @ 6-8 mega bits...& because our wireless is in line of site to an airport radar we had problems in the past...got newer modem/wifi receiver (on roof) there has been no problems...there will be no more upgrades here...until 5g arrives...I know some people who have Fibre Optics connections...and its over 100 times faster then mine...Nice little video Steve...looks like some of ya lawn needs a bit of water to get that grass growing where it was dug up 😁
...No work on MY part mate - Just frustration at what I CLEARLY see now, is a deliberate effort to reduce everyone's speed, since the various governments initial costings of the NBN have spiralled out of control in the ensuing years (as everything does). Rain would be great mate - Very dry here for months, aside from the odd small storm...so far. PS: Your speeds are slow as shit! - You'd DEFINITELY benefit from the NBN FTTP roll out!👌👍
Its not gonna happen where I live...so Im told..have to put up with what I have....Son has StarLink he said it pretty good (not as fast as Cable Node) but much better then NbN Wireless.....& yep Drought is starting here again me thinks @@SteveMack
Bugger. My mate 'out west' where I did my LONG 1 hour vlog last year, now has starlink - Dismal speeds compared to the city, but at least IT WORKS; which was the whole idea (When he was with Telstra, it RARELY didn't stuff up!).

I am in USA. MTE is the company. They service many areas and a couple states. And I forgot to say where they dug into our driveway which is all gravel they brought us a backhoe bucket full of gravel to go over that area to tidy it up. I was not at home when they did it. Hubby was. I imagine all the fiber was also laid by a government grant. My good friends here actually do all the splicing of the fibers to the homes.

Short answer
Your better off getting a sim only pre-paid mobile with data roll-over, if there's a limit, fill it up to the max.
For the same price as 12Mbit & 50Mbit, you can get 150Mbit mobile data speed with phone service not be restricted at home but take it with you.
My research as follows;
It's the anti free market competition environment set by Govt owned NBNco whom are price fixing the wholesale market, (if your old enough to remember) this is what the Howard Govt meant by having free market competition in the telecommunications industry without Govt interference.
5G wireless IS _potentially_ faster (also, as you rightly point out, cheaper for what you get), subject to the area one lives in...In MY area, it's crap. 5G is very much dependent on line of sight to a tower, otherwise the signal diminishes *dramatically* . An NBN tech told me years ago now, that the fibre network WILL become redundant in the future, once 5G (or looking into the future, another frequency) has enough towers.
@@SteveMack I'm just using 4G and I get faster service than 50Mbit NBN and much cheaper too I can take it with me wherever I go unlike NBN for $75

@@SteveMack Okay it's not WiFi. My neice and I discovered that the WiFi connection greatly reduces the
speed between the two components in this case it was the router (in a cupboard) beside the FIBRE to The House box whatever that is to her X BOX.
She bought a new CAT 5E cable (different cables have different speed capabilities) which made an enormous difference. I think it went from 300Mbps to 750Mbps.
So yeah ethernet cable makes an enormous difference to the download and upload speed.
In your case there is clearly something wrong.
So did you get it resolved?
...I'm an ex computer tech, so I already had CAT 6 cable runs via ethernet. What was 'wrong', are the plans that all ISP's now have in place - slower upload speeds than previously - a huge flaw in what was supposed to be (upon conception many years ago) 'faster'. For NOW; (after having gone to the TIO and complained) my ISP is giving me a higher speed plan for 6 months (which must be due to cease soon) - After which, I guess I'll shop around...yet again!

Glad I could help! Upgrading to FTTP IS worth doing, speed-wise, but be aware that your ISP will likely drop your speed; verify that in writing!
Hey Mr.Mack, I found your video while searching about the internet condition in Australia, I'm moving to Melbourne next January and honestly I was disappointed when I saw the internet packages offered.
In your opinion what provider have the best service?and should I except some down time in internet speeds during heavy traffic times?
Hi! Yes; seems all ISPs have crap upload speed plans now, and pretty expensive. Once upon a time, I could have recommended a few, but no longer sadly...

Yeah sorry - I've had quite a few in my life, and some that started OUT good, eventually over time, became crap in one way or another - Whether like one in my mind that were great, with actual Australian tech support, not farmed out to a country where I often struggle to understand what they're saying, or clearly they answer everything with a script and have next to zero knowledge of the issue; but then they did the wrong thing by me (& no doubt others!), and jacked UP the monthly cost, whilst REDUCING the speeds! (They used to have good upload speeds), so I went elsewhere. Prior to them, I had no issues with them, UNTIL they cut me OFF without notice, as they transitioned to NBN! (I did a video about it);ua-cam.com/video/SRvExMEX5FM/v-deo.htmlsi=-waTzZy6ieLG7P32 So I ended up with who I'm with, for now, but was shocked to learn just recently, that they no longer even HAVE any tech support!!! Once upon a time, I GUESS if the number one aspect was reliability (Not that I've had many if any downtime with others), I'd have suggested Telstra or Optus; both of which have ALWAYS been expensive, but now they TOO have very low upload speeds (but are STILL expensive!), so - what can we do?
@@SteveMack @SteveMack Ahh don't get me started on tech support, it's like every company in the world has outsourced it to your typical indian call center, which I don't have a problem with if they even can solve anything.
And also I'm really sorry that the cutting off incident happened to you, it really sucks that you had to sit there for weeks without internet, there need to be some precautions for a company doing stuff like this. I lived in Saudi for about 24 years now and the country has come a long way, as of now most of the country even tho it's a huge one have fttp service provided on every household older and the 500/200 package is a about 170 AUD which also includes a 3 wifi mesh setup for free, so if a country like Saudi can do it, then sure as hell Australia can do it too.
And honestly the price jacking in Australia is just a part of the equation, the main problem was the refusal of the nbn providers to take a hit early and switch to fttp infrastructure like the rest of the world, but instead they tried to find ways around it which only costed the costumer more.
Anyhow I guess once I settle in Australia I'll get back to you to complain about the providers haha.

I agree with you. I was actually *SHOCKED* that an 'Internet Service Provider' would ever *NOT* have tech support!!! I think a HUGE part of the NBN failure, was change of government back then - I remember the concept (I don't however remember WHICH party was in at the time) WAS from the START, to have fibre DIRECTLY to all homes...A change of govt saw this idea trashed, as "it would cost too much" _(totally defeating the idea of bypassing the standard twisted-pair copper phone lines!)_ - Fast forward some years, and now they're reverting *back* to the original idea ( *except all ISPs are now limiting upload speeds!* ). Hell; I remember 20+ years ago in South Korea when I was there; the internet was *LIGHTNING FAST!!!* - I've seen *NOTHING* anywhere that even comes remotely close to it! Sure mate, chat anytime...and it's just "Steve", ok? 😉🙂👌👍

Check your ping rate vs what you had before. It should be in the 1-2ms range instead of about 50ms for FTTN and about 10-20 for HFC. But I agree some of the more recent NBN installers are really of low quality.
Ping is 4ms. A long time back, even on FTTN, I'm sure it avg. around 1ms - 2ms
Kudos to you, if you have pride in your work, but clearly not all do.
Nice video. We have it here and I have used it. I was getting about 500 up and 500 down, but they started charging too much, so I went back to cable. Not as fast, but less expensive. It works fine for my needs. Be well mate.
Same here: IF one wanted to pay a small fortune - crazy speeds ARE available, even 1000MBPS! I think the reality is though; that one doesn't NEED much over 50MBPS to be able to stream 4K movies / videos without caching...As for upload speed, maybe uploading to youtube takes a little bit longer for huge videos, but _realistically_ , it's not too painful. PS: I fiddled around again with my modem/router last night, and again have 109MBPS download, even in peak times, so I'm a little less angry about it, even though upload speed is considerably lower than it was.

@@SteveMack: Personally I don’t need anything special because I mostly stream so happy with my current speeds whatever they are.
I do remember all of the hoohar over fibre to the nodes only, and copper remaining from node to premise. Some indications were that keeping copper to the premise defeats the purpose of having a fibre system. 🤷♂️ In your case, it doesn’t sound like an issue with speed.
I guess one of the issues indicated with copper “besides slower speeds” was astronomical maintenance costs.
So to get higher speeds whether copper or fibre to the premise is purely about how much you want to pay?? Is that what you are saying?
Not exactly...Slightly different aspect of the topic; Back when the then government first announced we'd all have fibre, it sounded a great idea, as speeds on fibre-optic can be infinitely faster than the antiquated copper lines, THEN, with the next government that came in - they said it would cost too much, so instead went fibre to the node, relying on the dumb idea of bottle-necking a fast supply, into a slower conduit...Fast forward to the current government, and the roll out again is what was first proposed, fibre ALL the way to the home.
The problem of the speed now dropping, is most likely due to the NBN Policer. This is where they hard drop any data you send above what your service is provisioned for. Your devices see these drops as congestion so back off and slowly ramp up again only to have it happen again. This doesn’t normally happen in the download direction because your ISP can rate limit you in a more controlled way. So on the 100/40, we were likely benefiting from the over-provisioning. This problem doesn't exist on FTTN because your modem/router is fully aware of how much capacity it has upstream so will never admit more than that. However with FTTP, that isn't available to your router since the link between it and the NTD is much higher speed than you'll push through it, hence your router can forward more data than is allowed and NBN will just discard it, which is the cause of the problem.
In ESSENCE; what I suspect, is that the governments NBN plan, is to eventually have us all on a very similar playing field with speeds.

Fiber to the house went in several years ago here. No lawn and they drilled underground from open gravel driveway up to the house. similar box on the side of the house but the wire followed through where the phone cable went. Then under the house to come up in center next to phone jack plug? So I have two inside. No inside house box but the usual modem. I only have 10 up 10 down here on my plan at 84 including phone landline with no long distance on it. I have heard cost id going up to 130 but service is going to 100 up 100 down.??And land line will then be voip instead of land?? As it was explained to me. All long distance is then no extra charge. I already have a voip phone OH well I have no choice they are going to do it . I am applying for the low income 65 and older 30 dollars a month payment to help cover the cost in the raise. I certainly qualify for the low income.

Well I think all is well. Hubby was here and supervised and I am sure he would have been barking if work was not good. The battery has been replaced in the outside unit a few times. Baffles them why the need. But they just show up to tell me I am having problems I was not even aware of and repairing it. No extra cost to me. and the young man that usually does the work is the nice guy that provides me with an elk or deer to eat every hunting season. I have to process it but it saves me so much $$$.
One thing on the grass. When hubby and I worked for the cemetery district. I had to cut the sod off the grave tops like they did for you and after the grave was filled in I reset the sod high as they did at your house. After a few irrigations the grave soil settles down and usually the sod goes back level. Heals itself. Once in winter and the snow got packed super hard around the grave I ended up with the sod set about 6 inches too high. Had no idea until spring when snow melted off. I called the man whose wife I had buried and told him and how sorry I was and I would repair it as fast as I could. He came out and chuckled on the incident. I felt so bad. He was not mad and gave me a nice hug. To bury someone when up to your butt in snow has its problems. Cripes just to find the right gravesite feels almost impossible.
Thanks for re-posting; youtube often goes weird: That reply I had to do under the video, rather than the way I usually do it 'behind the scenes'...Well here's the thing: with Australia's 'NBN'; there are NO contact methods for them, UNLESS you are a wholesale internet provider - How's THAT for good P.R.?? Sounds like everything's MUCH better there, on that front at least. What we need here in Queensland where I iive especially, IS rain! - Going through a rather dry period, which hopefully will improve as the season rolls on. I know it doesn't take an aweful lot of rain, for the grass to suddenly go nice and green. 🙂👌👍

Yep, 5G wireless is not NBN though. We had an NBN tech tell us a few years back when we first connected to FTTN, that "all of this will be redundant, as the future will be all wireless" - Rendering fibre-optic cables obsolete! (read also: yet ANOTHER waste of tax payers dollars!!)
@@SteveMackdefinitely not going to be made redundant. FTTP is future proofed and baked in it has potential speeds of 100GBPS at minimum, while 5G has limitations of not just speed but congestion and infrastructure. If people choose to switch to mobile internet then their every bodies speeds slow down. You can’t saturate the network with 5G/6G towers because it will cause congestion for everybody and potential future devices that need the 5GHZ band to function. Also the cost to do the upgrade saves the government a ton of money because replacing copper far outweighs the cost of installing FTTP and replacing. GOVT spent 60 Billion on cost because they didn’t do the FTTP upgrade. It’s either they keep the status quo and we wait for telecoms to increase mobile speeds and towers (2030 at least) and businesses and consumers get left behind in the dark ages or they do the upgrade which has a huge upfront cost but maintenance is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper. Chorus in New Zealand did the FTTH upgrade and completed it under budget, quicker with more homes connected. They are making profits, NBN loses a billion every year due to FTTN, FTTC & HFC.
That's likely why NBN just increased wholesale prices, which means the end user will have to pay more for our internet.
It sounds like they moved you from a 100/40 to a 100/25 plan. Plenty of providers still offer 100/40, but not all of them.
Yes, it *does* sound that way - unfortunately for me: they say they don't _HAVE_ a 100/40 plan!
I've looked around at MANY; most are 100/20 now, or else step way up in cost, and even then; many are still only 20MBPS up now. 😪
Just jump back onto fibre to the node and the rest is history
Not sure about where you are, or your plan; but apparently one *CAN'T* switch back to FTTN, once we've gone onto FTTP. 😯

Hell yeah! The trouble IS - You can't PHONE nor contact NBN, except if you're a wholesaler! So there's no way to let them know when jobs have been done poorly!

So dodo tried 6 times to call me today, in response to my Telecommunications ombudsman complaint - for some reason, my phone must've thought they were scammers!! Anyway, I spoke to the designated 'appease this guy so we don't get a bad wrap over the knuckles' lady; long story short; at first since they no longer have a 100/40 plan, she offered a discount for 6 months of $10 per month...I suggested instead, they upgrade me to their fastest 200mbps plan, which she did (AT the same cost per month as we're on) then I also wrung a modem out of her, since we were looking soon at replacing ours, with one that has the QoS setting that I can tweak to speed things up even further. Changing ISP's is such a pain, with emails etc, so we'll see how we go for 6 months, then reevaluate whether we jump to another mob or not.
I've had 3 NBN tech's at my place and all 3 said FTTP cannot be connected here because there is no clear pathway for the cable from the pit or through my house to where i want the box installed. I would have to pay an electrician to come in and dig a new trench across my yard and lay a new conduit for the fibre cable to run through, and i'd also have to have a clear pathway created in my roof space for the fibre to run through to where i want the box installed........all expenses i cannot afford, so i'll be stuck with my crappy FTTN forever.
SORRY for delay, I was working as an actor (what I do at times) and couldn't reply on my phone. That SHOULDN'T be the case, according to the info that NBN sprouts! I don't recall NOW if it was the first NBN guy that came out, but at some stage, someone mentioned the possibility of me having to pay for a trench to be dug etc - which DIDN'T end up being the case thankfully! What can I suggest? : Perhaps first of all, contact your ISP, and tell them what you've been told, and potentially file a complaint to NBN VIA them (we can't actually CONTACT NBN, as they ONLY deal with retailers, (Internet providers)). If that fails; you could consider filing a complaint about NBN with the TIO (Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman), because I'm pretty sure that the whole thing with NBN now, is that THEY need to provide whatever is necessary, to connect you...Unless of course you live in a very remote area away from any big towns or cities. I have had the exact same experience. Interestingly, every technician appears to have received no information from the previous person that visited and I feel like I'm going around in circles. I've now notified the ISP as you've suggested and hope I have some luck with completing the install.
The bigger issue, is that all ISP's are now charging way too much! NBN just put their prices up at the start of this month, which means the cost will be further put onto us end-users! 😪

@@SteveMack So now you have options. Gigabit speeds are available. Fibre is superior to any other form thats currently available. 5g won't even get close, the ol saying is, you can't beat a cable.

Fibre is a million times better, if you aren't getting the speeds you wanted then its either the ISP or you have a crap router. 99.9% of problems are user/ISP related not NBN...
Well, an exageration of course, but I fully agree it's vastly faster - My issue wasn't (as I said) DOWNLOAD speed, it's upload speed, which all ISP's now limit! - The average being around 20mbps upload. The modem wasn't crap, but I'm now currently using a modem supplied by the ISP, as after complaining to the TIO, they did a deal with me for their fastest current plan, so my download speed is around 275MBPS!! UPLOAD however, still barely averages 20MBPS.

Dodo (currently); theirs is a TP-LINK, but set so I can't fiddle with settings to override certain things, as I DO with mine normally.
Chinese workers are faster. Not that anyone from south Asia is not as good.
But the good news is in the future a friendly A.I. will come around in the form of a human looking robot and after the excellent job well done will sit down and share a pot of tea with you.
You get different quality workers, in all races. I'm not sure about future robots drinking TEA: That may cause a short circuit! 😆😉🙂

Bit lumpy... Crikey hard to take your complaints serious when you pick at every little thing you have an issue with like an old woman.
...And when the possums here, that are notorious at chewing on wiring etc, cut through the thin exposed fibre optic cable and I lose all internet, and have to wait God knows how many weeks for NBN to replace it - simply because they failed to comply with industry standard installation; would that justify my concerns? Or are you one of the masses that accept sub-standard workmanship for everything?

Get superloop , they sell 100/40 so cheap and full speed 24/7
Do you use them? They, and exetel (I think both are owned by the same head company) offer that (as do a few others), but whilst I AM pondering a change; I've been put-off by a LOT of very negative reviews from customers.

they are doing the fibre upgrade in my street , they replaced pits and put the fibre , it will take another couple of weeks to order fibre upgrade , i will upgrade from 100/40 to 1000/50 plan , the 1000 plan with superloop is a bargain @@SteveMack
They replaced the pit too? That's good! (They're all asbestos lined, which is probably why). Yes, some good plans out there now - I've managed to strike a deal with my ISP (After complaining about them to the ombudsman!) so will see how it goes for 6 months; download speed is NOW 275MBPS, but upload is still very ordinary) - I have superloop in mind, but am still partially put off by a LOT of bad reviews about them...I guess it's pot luck with any of them
