      Thank you, the small thing I meant to add about this specific camera is because of its autofocus settings you can get away with recording at a shallow depth of field, it does a decent job at readjusting. A problem you may come across though is that if you're close to the camera and move a lot whilst the camera is still, it may try constantly change focus.
      It also depends on the available light, bear in mind that a camera in low light will constantly try to find focus and any camera will struggle with this, unless it's a camera that can handle low light really well. It's useful recording in good lighting anyway. I'm always glad it's helpful to folk nonetheless and if folk do have questions I'll be more than happy to answer them.

    Thanks for this video I'm going to have a look through the settings and make some changes if needed. We were vlogging on 'auto' then we decided to vlog using manual settings. It was all going well until we filmed indoors and moved outdoors, the screen just went white (it was a very sunny day). Ended up going back to auto because we tend to film quite a bit going indoors to outdoors and vice versa and we didn't want to have to stop our video to alter settings!

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  5 років тому

      Yes, on manual using a camera, if the exposure is set for the correct exposure indoors, when you walk outside it is naturally going to be over exposed on a really sunny day. I'm not sure if the G7X Mark ii auto adjusts that on manual, I don't think it does.
      If you wish for the camera to auto adjust shutter speed which also acts as your exposure, you can set it to AV mode, which stands for 'aperture priority'. The purpose of aperture priority is that you can manually adjust your aperture, but the camera auto adjusts the shutter speed (exposure) to correct for lighting.
      There is also TV mode; again, similar to AV mode, the TV mode auto adjusts the ISO and aperture and gives you the freedom to manually adjust your shutter speed.
      Full manual mode would be ideal for trying to create something more professional where you set the camera down, set its settings record one bit of footage and say you go outside, instead of walking with the camera, you would set the camera outside and walk out and the camera would be there pointing at you with the correct exposure settings. You see top vloggers doing this.
      Perhaps I'll do a video very soon explaining a bit more :)

      Thanks so much! I'm going to give these settings a go! Loving vlogging and it's fun learning new techniques with the camera! We're still getting to grips with it all, I'd love to get some opinions on our videos in terms of video quality.

      I'll be sure to check those out soon and no problem at all, always happy to be of help. If I was to vlog walking about with it anyway, the camera does a reasonably good job with auto as it adjusts the exposure.

    Thanks Scott. I've watched a few videos since getting my camera and yours has definitely been the easiest to understand while getting all of the info I needed. Much appreciated.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому +1

      Not a problem at all, you're more than welcome. You tend to find people who take vlogging to that next level like what Casey Neistat does, you can analyse the creative stuff he does and how he keeps the camera still sitting on something and does jump cuts. When vlogging walking about, it's a different story and light changes constantly, hell, I even find that with my photography. So yes, it's really just a case of understanding when you might use manual, to that of automatic.
      If there is one thing I might update about this video, however, is that this camera is slightly different from what I'm used to using with my DSLR camera's, in other words, because of the wide angle fo 28mm, you may get away with an f/1.8 aperture whilst recording in manual. There is a difference between a 28mm focal distance to that of 100mm, you find there's more bokeh (blur of the background) when zoomed in at 100mm.
      Anyway, glad it was of help.

      Thank you, Melody, glad it was of some help to yourself. I know that vlogging is a popular thing these days, for those who wish to walk about it becomes difficult because of constant lighting changing, it's because wherever the light source is coming from, the light will change whichever direction you turn, that affects the camera.
      The Canon G7X Mark ii is fantastic at quickly changing this with automatic settings, for someone more professional use they would probably record each clip separately and still using a tripod.
      Either way, I'm sure it is of help to people :)

      Interesting, I'm not entirely sure if there is a record time limit with the G7X Mark II purely because I've never used it that extensively. Have you checked the size of your card, storage?
      I just researched and it says as follows:
      _"Recording Limits. The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II has a maximum video recording time of 1 hour or file size limit of 4GB"_
      That may be the reason why if you've gone beyond that limit. Sometimes it's best to record in snippets when you come across that issue.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому

      Yes, certainly Mirela, I could do a video on time lapse, as I’m currently redecorating I have a number of things I’ll get around to building, so I might do a time lapse video on that and show how timelapse is done using the Canon G7x Mark ii. Same with the option for slow motion, I’ll be sure to look into that. I tend to use video editing to do that to give me flexibility, but I will explain all that in a near future video. Thanks for the recommendations and I’ll be sure to get that sorted soon enough 🙂👌

    What setting did you use for vlogging?? Because mine sucks right now btw I just got the g7x mark ii two days ago and need big help with the setting.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому

      Surprised I missed this comment. It depends what type of vlogging, like if you're walking around and if light changes, you may favour using automatic settings, which I'm sure standard does for that. If you set it to manual settings where you see the aperture, shutter speed and ISO boxes, this is ideal for indoors. If sitting talking to the camera, try a wide open aperture of f/1.8 and the shutter speed (which also acts as your exposure,) to 1/50 or 1/60, then ISO depending on the available light in the room you record to the desired exposure.
      What style of vlogs do you create? :)

    • @MyannMcKenzie
      @MyannMcKenzie 6 років тому

      Scott CJ McKelvie I do family vlogs which I walk around and move a lot and yes lighting changes. I have try manual and I find it so hard to always set the settings and auto seems fine but it makes the color so pink or orange. Please have a look of my previous vlog which is “my 28th birthday vlog” you’ll see what I’m talking about and editing seems to work a little but manual isn’t for me and auto makes me looks so pink or orange at times

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому +1

      Yes, the reason why the camera auto changes the light is because of the auto settings, it's because the camera has to adjust to the different lighting conditions from one room to another or say if you walk from the sun to a shaded area. I'll do a video on white balance soon because you have brought up an interesting point. Basically when you record under _Standard_ mode which is automatic, up the top right of the screen you'll see the Q icon to bring up menu settings. The option AWB is your _'Auto White Balance'_ and when you click on that you can choose your own white balance.
      You will find that lighting conditions change from different rooms, this is natural and you'll notice this when you change from walking from an indoor setting to walking outdoors. I would recommend if you do set the white balance manually to just record separately, what I mean is, not recording walking from indoor to outdoor, recording when you've changed the white balance.
      I'll check out your vlog and get back to you on this, but it no doubt is what I've explained. Auto White Balance is decent, it's not fantastic, so if you record in a specific room, before you do press record, go to the Q menu setting top right under Standard Mode, click the AWB icon and change the white balance to suit. I will do a video though explaining more about white balance soon.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому +2

      So, having watched the vlog, it seems to do a pretty good job with the Auto White Balance (AWB) and what you will notice is that when your camera pans from the birthday cake pointed at it, then away from that, the light changes. This is natural because when you point a camera down at a certain light the camera is adjusting to that exposure and white balance and when you pan away the camera again readjusts. That's because the lighting of the candles is different from the lighting in the room, that's naturally going to happen.
      You could make it more consistent by setting the one white balance setting manually, something suited to the candles, therefore, when you pan away it'll remain that white balance, however, the lighting in the room may show up orange.
      Take notice that at the beginning of the video because of windows behind the subject, the camera is auto adjusting to that exposure. Do a test, have someone stand with their back like that to daylight shooting through a window and by pressing your finger on the window, you'll see it exposes for the window, then press your finger on the person and it fixes the exposure to brighten the subject, this is naturally going to happen. When you were pointing the camera at your partner it was taking time, you can press your finger on the subject on the screen and you'll see how that can change things.
      You have to bear in mind that for the type of vlogging you do, light changes dramatically.
      You probably know of a vlogger by the name Casey Neistat, notice how in his vlogging style he places the camera somewhere and walks into the room? Most of his recording is in bits for this reason, so challenging yourself to improve your vlogging can really improve for desired effect. Example: you show yourself talking in the car, but you pan round to your partner and again light changes; try recording in bits, such as record yourself talking, stop the recording, then record your partner separately and within your video editor put it together like that. You'll notice how much it lifts the quality of your video.

    • @MyannMcKenzie
      @MyannMcKenzie 6 років тому +1

      Yeah you’re so right. But I’m the type of vlogger that record at one time and just expect for my camera to adjust on its own since it’s on auto. Before my g7x mark ii I was using Sony A5000 and I never had this problem, I just just the camera setting one time and just record and it does great job with walking around and even on different lighting situations so there is no need to change things up. That’s why I’m having difficulty with my canon g7x mark ii because it’s not like my Sony a5000. But I’m sure to give it a try where I vlog and stop to adjust my setting for different lighting situations. Thanks so much hope this help me because I’m so close on returning my g7x mark ii 😔

      When you are recording video, the moment you hit the record button again, it stops the recording, this as far as I'm aware is how all camera's operate, however, all you do is hit record again and when you take the files off your SD Card and put it onto the computer you put both the clips together within your post-processed edit.
      A good technique to use to make things seem seamless is to zoom in some parts and zoom out in others, that's optional. This is perhaps something I could demonstrate. The only problem with recording long segments and trying the zoom technique is that it's 1080p video so zooming in would lose a bit of video quality. The workaround for that is recording a segmant that is zoomed out, then separately a second recording of the next thing you're going to say zoomed in using the zoom on the camera. However, it may not work the same if vlogging around.
      I'll see if I can show this sort of stuff in video as that may help you better understand.

      From what I have briefly looked over, when the Canon G7X Mark ii is set to movie mode on the top dial of the camera and you go into menu settings where record mode menu is (where you change from standard to manual or timelapse), there is the short movie mode option. A shorter way would be to go to movie mode from the top dial, press the Q set button which is in the middle of the dial, it brings up a menu and you can turn the wheel to 'short clip'. That's the mode that will allow you to record the short clips. Once you've recorded them you open the videos up in video editing software and put it together.

      Did you set it to manual mode? If so I would try setting the ISO down, if it still seems too over exposed, increasing the shutter speed which also acts as your exposure may help. There is also a dial on the camera, the big one below the mode dial that enables you to lower the exposure. If further help I can certainly help out in that regard :)

      Interesting question, there is a way that you can setup using specific products you can buy for that function, although that can cost you a bit. There are some DSLR camera's like the 70D that have a remote function where you can control your camera through wifi remotely through your smartphone device, although, when it comes to the G7X Mark ii I don't think there is that option for remote control use.

    Hello Scott, for general vlogging do you recommend to record in 60 FPS or 30FPS? Regards Craig

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому

      Hi Craig, from my personal experience with 60fps it appears faster and smoother than say, 24fps or 30fps. You tend to find they record films in 24fps, but for something that appears more natural, 60fps seems more natural. As a little suggestion, you could look around on UA-cam for videos recorded on both 60fps and 30fps and compare the two.
      This is a start:
      ua-cam.com/video/ChsT-y7Yvkk/v-deo.html
      At 60fps you can see it appears seamless, where as 30fps it appears to lag. So for me 60fps is the better option for vlogging as it seems more natural.

    • @OutandAboutwithCraig
      @OutandAboutwithCraig 7 років тому +2

      Thankyou Scott for your speedy reply. 60 FPS seems to best but I was just worried about all the extra data it takes up and the more time for editing. I thought 60 FPS was mainly used to make slow-mo’s. I guess the best thing is go out and do my own testing and see which is best for my needs. I’m only new to cameras and vlogging but I have been really enjoying this massive learning curve. It’s a fantastic hobby and I’m loving my new Canon g7x mark ii. The quality of the video recording is awesome for such a little camera and the auto mode makes us newbies look great. The still pictures are also very very good. It’s been a massive upgrade from using my iPhone 7 Plus camera especially in low light scenarios. Thanks again for your fast reply and I look forwarded to watching more of your videos in the future. A big cheers from Perth, Western Australia. Craig

      I understand where you are coming from, it is difficult for me to personally judge because I'm using quite a powerful iMac computer and therefore I'm able to edit 4k with relative ease, in saying that when I did a lot of editing prior to this computer when I had my laptop from 2010, it was pretty decent for editing videos that were 1080. I think where the real struggle comes in is when jumping from say 1080 to 4k then there's a major difference.
      I have seen people mention that using the higher frame rate number was best for creating slow-motion videos, again I'm no technical expert on that specifically nor would I worry too much, I've never had much of a problem creating slow-motion even recording at 30fps. Indeed, testing is the best thing one can do, I personally prefer the 60fps because it appears more natural, in other words, it gives the viewer a closer feel making it feel they're there, it's closer to what the eye sees in person I believe.
      Vlogging is a wonderful way to get creative, it inspires you into recording and learning things and that is a wonderful thing. The Canon G7X Mark ii is a fantastic wee camera, I'm someone who uses it on the go for photography and okay, it's not going to be like my Canon 5D Mark iii and lenses I have, but this wee camera takes fantastic pictures for what it's worth and the video is fantastic for vlogging, it honestly is. To be honest, I can't see the absolute necessity of 4K.
      The only reason I prefer 4K and perhaps I'll do a video on this is because with 4K I can record just one long clip and in editing, I can zoom into clips without losing much quality at all, so it's flexible. However, with the 1080 60fps, it really is quick and straight to the point for vlogging and the quality is still pretty decent. Bear this in mind I have a 5K screen and 1080 is pretty decent. I could really only justify 4K for something more professional that I find necessary. This channel I try to for the sake of business, but you can still create some professional stuff even out of 1080 60fps, so no worries.
      I will always remember my old photography teacher from over 2 to 3 years ago who said to me that it's not really the equipment and the cost, although they have their advantages, it's what the person does with the camera that counts and that is so true. I looked at a picture someone captured of a swan with a cheap camera 50mm lens and it was still impressive. So yes, you'll still get a lot out of the Canon G7X Mark ii.
      Oh, the iPhone 7 will struggle in low light I would imagine, I think that's more to do with it having a low ISO range, I could be wrong but I've seen how pixelated it looks in low light. The Canon G7X Mark ii is decent in that regard.
      And thank you, Craig, very much appreciated, from all the way over here in bonnie Scotland,
      Scotty

      Thanks Scotty, Your a photography legend. Hey I also have a few things in commen with Scotland. My name Craig which is a Scottish name and I live in Perth Western Australia which is named after Perth in Scotland.
      I’m learning how to Vlogg at the moment. Like learning to present and speak clearly in front of the camera, learning how to use the camera and all its limitations. Also I’m learning how to edit my videos, like cutting, voice overs, adding music in background, adding still pictures, titles and all that stuff etc. it’s lots of fun learning and being creative again. I’m using iMovie at the moment. It’s great for learners to immediate editing and best of its free. Once I’ve mastered iMovie and make a few good Vloggs I’ll probably purchase something like Final Cut Pro to make my vloggs better and look more professional if I have what it takes.
      As you said before the most important thing is your content.
      My Vloggs will be filmed mostly outdoors as my channel will be about travel, food and adventure which is my greatest passion in life. I’ve already done a few practice vloggs. I play them back over and over again to see how I went and how I can improve. It’s not as easy as it’s looks. It will take time for me before I get good at it but as they say practice makes perfect.
      Cheers again from Craig

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому

      Thank you, very much appreciated Craig. Indeed, there is strong Scottish heritage that resides in Australia, I'm not great geographically in terms of where the places are in Australia but I've heard of Perth. For someone like me who loves wildlife, It would be something special to photograph in a country like that, it's amazing how much wildlife you have out there.
      Vlogging you can take great inspiration from many of the other UA-camrs, how you jump cut can also make a difference, you'll notice I use zoom when jumping from one scene to another or overlay with another video, it's more professional looking. It's a fun way also to get the most out of your camera and learn it. As you say the iMovie is something free which is pretty decent, I have been using Adobe Premiere Pro CC which is something I'm used to. I used something similar to Premiere Pro such as Final Cut Pro when I was studying basics of TV operations but I prefer using Premiere Pro CC. The only reason for my preference is because it is what I'm used to. Final Cut Pro however is really good software, it's just different how you do certain things, but once you're used to it it's fantastic.
      Correct, it's the content people produce that counts, that's why someone like Casey Neistat could record in a cheap video format and still get away with it. Don't get me wrong, it still looks impressive to watch 4K resolution but I find the best videos for that really stand out in the professionally made videos you see, such as one on arctic monkeys. A lot of photographers create these videos these days as it's now part of photography.
      For recording outdoors and I imagine it being very bright and sunny if you ever decide to record in manual mode for whatever reason you could open the aperture to f/1.8 due to the camera zoomed out at 28mm and then increasing the shutter speed which also acts as your exposure. Increasing the shutter speed darkens the exposure and therefore you can prevent overexposure of the background. Also useful to have your face directed where sunlight is. Automatic settings, however, are pretty useful for vlogging it adjusts with all of that, so it's all optional.
      Still video footage with the camera remaining still and capturing still shots of different things you're talking about can really set it apart and make it look professional. Look up some of the 4K videos on UA-cam and you'll see the inspiration of how they record particular subjects with different angles but are all still shots. Nonetheless, sounds interesting :)

Ensure the dial mode is set to the movie icon and not SCN and under settings set it to manual, if you have it set to that it intrigues me why it's auto changing your zoom.

      Hi Katie, sorry about the late reply. Are you referring to the volume when you record video using the camera? If so, depending on the video editing software, there is a way you can boost the volume. If you mean the operation of the camera, under the menu settings if you scroll to the yellow menu under menu 3 there is volume settings there, but that's for fixing the volume of the camera bleep sounds etc.
      You will find that the recording I use is independent audio, if I ever do record with the Canon G7X Mark ii for video, I record the audio separately using an independent device plus I use a lavalier mic. Hope that helps.

      Glad to see, Katie, it's a good wee camera, it's just a shame they didn't add a mic socket for people to easily record independent audio through a mic, but you will find that if you ever choose to go down that road, there are lavalier microphones you can get designed for something like a mobile phone like an iPhone or that which allows you to record independent audio.
      I may do some video at some point about recording independent audio, glad to see you sorted things.

      Hi, the first question that I would have to ask you is about what type of videos do you record? If the videos are of you sitting in front of the camera where the camera is still, you may wish to try out manual settings which allow you to manually fix your aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
      If the autofocus noise is something you may hear through the recording of any of your videos, you could try to independently record audio, but that comes at a cost.
      I own the RØDE SmarLav+ which is designed for mobile phone devices and works with my iPhone 6s Plus, with something like that you can record audio independently whilst you record the video through the camera, it just means pressing record on the phone first then recording the video and stopping both, then later syncing both audio and video. This solely depends though on the type of video editing software you use, I mean I use Adobe Premiere Pro CC, so it has the independent audio tracks and video tracks on the timeline.
      Of course, these are just suggestions.
      If walking about with the camera going from one room to another or one light area to another, the camera is going to readjust itself in auto settings to adapt to the light change, so be aware of those things. If any further questions, feel free to ask and I'll be sure to get back to you.

      One last hint I may add; as I saw from a quick glance at some of your nice videos, you guys may also wish to take into consideration that distance of the camera from you can matter, for example; if the camera is too close and you put your hand closer to it, in auto settings it may start to search for your hand and then when you remove your hand it searches for your face. You should experiment with that in auto settings and you'll see what I mean.
      When the camera dial mode at the top of the camera is set to the little camera icon for recording movie mode, within the first menu, I'm sure it is, you will find record mode, under that you can switch to manual mode setting.
      Within that you will find the 3 boxes: shutter speed/exposure (bottom left), aperture (middle) and ISO (bottom right).
      The trick is on this camera is to set your ISO low as possible, which is 125 for best quality, open the aperture as wide is it can possibly go (when zoomed out completely, it'll allow you to open the aperture wide to f/1.8) and slowing down the shutter speed (bottom left) brightens the exposure, slowest I would make it is 1/50. If the exposure is too bright, increase your shutter speed till you have the desired exposure, if it's too dark, leave the shutter speed as is and try raising the ISO as a last resort till you get the desired look.
      *HINT:* using independent lighting to brighten the subjects (such as yourselves) may rectify the problem which would enable you to keep the ISO low. Raising the ISO adds grain noise at a certain level.
      I hope this information is of some help to you and that it improves your recording experience :)

      Scott CJ McKelvie you are by far the ONLY one on UA-cam that explains in perfect detail what to do, so thank you. I’ll be fixing these settings right away. You’ve definitely earned a sub from me!

      Scott CJ McKelvie so for your hint, you recommend that we should have our own lighting to help? Yes? Like softboxes? Or did you mean no

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому

      It could be something as simple as a main light, such as a ceiling light, a well-lit room that can help. During daylight from a window can help greatly, especially if you are sitting facing the direct sunlight coming in from a window, or if a window is to the side of you it may cast a shadow on the opposite side of your face, so by using a white surface that reflects light back to fill in the other side of your face, these are all techniques.
      The key to recording is good lighting, it seems you have that from the videos you have. The stands with softbox lighting you can buy independently are useful, but it all depends on your available space and whether you wish to take it to that level.

    Hi. Nice video. I have question to you. Nowadays I use NTSC 29.97 FPS at my G7X II when I recording. But recording around landscape looks not very smooth and so pixeled. Can you recommend some settings which I need to change to improve it - sample video you can fine at below link (first few seconds):

    Thanks in advance.

      Hi, I might do a video on this because it's perhaps more difficult to explain simply because some may not understand what I'm talking about. When you export videos you tend to have settings for the type of file you choose to export it as, as well as the resolution of the video. I use Adobe Premiere Pro CC and the default settings sets the resolution lower, you can opt to increase the resolution but means the video will take longer to export and will be a bigger file size; likewise it is longer to upload on UA-cam.
      This is perhaps the major reason why when you export videos at 29.97 fps you are getting pixelated videos, it's not really to do with your recording as such but your exported video. The issue is, I wouldn't know what video software you use or if there's options to change the file type and or file size. In Adobe Premiere Pro CC I have 'Bitrate Settings' under the export video window which enables me to increase both sliders on the Target Bitrate (Mbps) as well as the Maximum Bitrate (Mbps). I also tick the 'Render at Maximum Depth' and the file type H.264.
      So, I reckon it's to do with your export settings, when you export a video I'm sure there would be settings to either change file type or export it at a higher resolution.
      I hope this helps Piotr and nice video!

      Glad to have been of help, I'm pretty sure you'll see a difference. It's also worth noting that when you increase those sliders for Bitrate you'll see the file size change at the bottom.

    Can you make a tutorial about transitions on canon g7x mark 2?

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому +1

      Hello, I would be more than happy to do a video showing the editing process of something, I'm not aware of transitions within the camera itself, I guess because my workflow involves recording using manual and then putting the video into Adobe Premiere Pro CC. I think it would be worthwhile though to do a video of what I do with my editing process as that can help people perhaps better understand. Saying that, Adobe Premiere Pro CC is more advanced than perhaps some of the very basic editors out there.
      I'll see about recording something tomorrow and putting it up, I'll probably do so after the Rangers game tomorrow which is on at 3 in the afternoon UK time. I did say I would start doing editing on video I recorded before when I went to Rome, so putting a lot of that together it would be useful to show. Transitions tend to be things within video editing software and that's all part of the post-processing.

      @@scottcjmckelviephotography one of the most important features of canon g7x mark ii is the ability of editing during filming. Try short clips feature and how you can put them together in the camera itself. I know this is possible but I don't now how to do it . So, I would like to create films, with very short shots, all being edited within the camera. I think you know more about this camera than me. It's about saving time, and saving post editing some quick videos.
