    I have seen a number of other videos on this camera and most say not great video but great for photography . I do street and even though its 2020 I decided to purchase one .. Some 2020 camera do the same thing and I hated the idea of paying a lot of money for a compact just because it is the newest model. Thank u for this video, even in 2020 its fab little camera .

    Great review, very in depth and glad to see someone do photography point of view. This is such a great all in one package for a beginner and traveler. Photography and cinematography or vlogger. Lots of examples to share, love it. I'd like to see same picture but one max zoom (before it hits digital zoom) and one wide as possible.

      Thank you, Andre, I have been in the middle of a lot of redecorating work this past 2 to 3 weeks and will be posting out a lot more videos as soon as I get everything set back up. I'll see about putting out a video demonstrating the camera at its widest focal length to the maximum focal length, may even demonstrate how the widest aperture at the maximum focal length only opens up to about f/2.2 as it may give people a better understanding.
      As a photographer, it's a fantastic small compact camera for just taking pictures on the go. Had a few requests on other videos so will be doing a time lapse tutorial as soon as things are set back up.

      Hi Angela, whilst the Canon G7X Mark ii may not be the quality of that of my Canon 5D Mark iii that is to be expected, but for what it is it takes good pictures and I agree with you about travelling, that's what I love about it myself.

      Fantastic, you will be very pleased with this camera, I can guarantee you that. As you know my primary reason for getting this wonderful wee camera is because I'm a photographer or would put it photography HND student and so for me it's a wonderful wee thing to have, like when walking around and see something on the fly, it can take wonderful pictures. Add to that for a zoom range between 28 to 100 I think it is and to have f/1.8 aperture, fantastic.
      One side note as I am unaware of your own knowledge on photography if you zoom in your aperture range begins to stop down, therefore zooming right in means the widest aperture you can reach I think is about f/2.2 whereas zoomed out to 28mm you can get f/1.8 just thought I'd throw that out incase it may confuse some people and wondering why they can't get it down to f/1.8 aperture when zoomed in.

    I bought this camera because I wanted something lightweight so I would take more pictures. Thank you for your insights. You should do a video on settings you used for some of your best work. I am interested in getting the best pictures I can on this camera without hauling all the awkward gear for the regular photo buffs out there. No sense in having a camera for me if I can't easily take pictures in the moment. Life doesn't wait for the perfect shot! Cheers 📸

    great Video Scott finally I have some understanding what Shutter, Aperture, and ISO do didn't have clue before glad I came across your video, and def make more videos explaining those details and when you would use each option like you mentioned high shutter speed use for when bird flapping wings for still image. those examples make it easier to digest information.

      Thank you! Indeed, I think it's overdue and will certainly get around to recording another relative as such, but that's great that you got to grips with the aperture, shutter speed and ISO, for me you get more fun out of photography. I also think covering a bit more depth which helps with stuff like that would help, so I'll be sure to include things like that.

      awesome looking forward to your next tutorial :) 1 question do you think it's worth getting g7x to practice for a year and then later upgrade to 80D? I'm thinking of buying either g7x or 80D but thinking about it I don't have much clue with all those manual settings so thought g7x should be ok to start with and have more understanding how to use manual commands plus I still need to learn Final Cut Pro X

      When it comes to the entry level of cameras you will find crop sensor body cameras are cheaper than your full frames, that being due to the body of a crop sensor doesn't have the same image quality and lets in less light, say for example when you compare my Canon 70D to that of my 5D Mark iii. Cropped sensor also means that when you attach a 50mm lens to it it won't be 50mm but slightly more zoomed in, perhaps around 80mm and that can be an advantage or disadvantage.
      I still like my 70D, it still takes pretty good image quality and if you put a telephoto lens onto it like for example my 150-600mm it means I'll get a 900mm zoom range. So there is advantages and disadvantages. But for what you'd be looking at a Canon 80D is a very good entry level camera.
      You find that with the ISO you'll get better ISO range out of the cropped sensor 80D as well and that does also depend on the lens you buy for it, you can get a pretty good f/1.8 50mm standard lens for about £72 - £100 but you would be zooming with your feet, meaning it's fixed focal length, no zooming.
      It would be slightly more expensive as well than just say buying the Canon G7X Mark ii, the thing you have to remember is that you're stuck with that one lens that is built into the G7X Mark ii, but it's got a good focal range between about 28mm to 100mm which you can't complain. So yes there are obvious draw backs and some advantages.
      I would say for the G7X Mark ii it's a fantastic point and shoot camera, small, compact, can fit in a wee pouch made for the camera you can carry around with you, quick to put on and when you grasp the understanding of the manual function with the ISO, shutter speed and aperture, understanding that relationship it's a brilliant wee camera, or even for those who wish to stick it on automatic or semi automatic.
      So it really depends. I mean with a DSLR you can always invest over time in new lenses that are suitable fit for the cropped sensor.
      If you are considering in getting more into photography and thinking that well future investment maybe ideal, you tend to find Canon gives a suitable standard zoom lens with the camera. When I first got my 70D it was the 18-135mm IS STM lens, just means image stabilisation and STM being quiet. It's good starting lens and if you ever decide to upgrade on lens that's always optional. I'll perhaps do a video on that to help better explain, but yes you get the idea.

    • @DarkAngel-vs3om
      @DarkAngel-vs3om 7 років тому

      yeah, that's why im having bit difficult picking right one but in the end, I think ill just get both as my wife wants G7X.
      The kit I found with 80D is 18-55mm IS STM + 55-250 IS STM can you explain those 2 lenses to me as I don't know what it would be used for?
      what I want to use it for is Car Shows and Motorbike Shows so what I really need is close up lens
      Also what is this lens used for 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens?
      so for me, the ideal would be STM lens but I know new model USM is quiet but not sure is that one I mentioned up 18-135mm I don't need a fast zoom slow is fine as I plan to do slow motion effects.
      I really appreciate your time and help and taking your time to explain it means a lot to me.

    Thank you for a real man on the street review of a camera designed for the man on the street. Your review, I found, is honest, well thought out, and your presentation of the information is very authentic. You didn't sensationalize it with gimmicks or with stupid pet tricks as if I'm a puppy who's attention you want to attract and keep. I am likely not buying the camera, but once the video began, I couldn't stop watching. I think the accent was in part responsible too. Wish I could hire you to review everything I buy so I can make better choices. Actually I wish I could afford to hire you...lol. How great would that be? A good friend you trust giving me advice, and he's not paid by the brand, his motivation is because he cares!
    Now I'm getting into fantasy land. Once again, thank you.

      Thank you Wayne, it really is a fantastic camera for the Street shots because one thing I didn't touch upon was the fact with this camera you can turn the audio of the shutter sound off as well as the focus beam off etc, means you can walk around take pictures without people knowing you've shot. It's quite funny however trying to explain to people who may not understand Street Photography and may perceive that as being pervy haha
      Nonetheless Wayne, fantastic wee camera especially for on the go shooting.

    Hey Scott, thanks - I am getting one next week for NYC street photography. I have a health issue which has caused me to have to carry around something a lot lighter than my main camera. I chose this though I am fully aware that I am in the price range for a couple that are "better" but I am a photographer - not a vlogger - and I need that flip screen - etc. I want that evf but I'll live without it - I started without one in fact. Great photos in this video. Thanks for sharing all of this info.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому +1

      I really enjoyed using it for the street photography and was a lot of fun going out shooting with it, not like having my big DSLR cameras that are less conspicuous. And for your own issue, sorry to hear about that Joel, I think for me the only downside about the Canon G7x Mark ii is that the ISO isn't that fantastic, anything above 800 has its problems. Other than that however you'll get great use out of this especially with the good zoom range and wide open aperture. Agreed, I know precisely where you're coming from and I had that same judgement when I went to purchase this.
      And no problem at all and thank you, all the very best Joel.

    Man this is the best review for this camera so far especially the manual settings part. Regarding the manual setting, can it be adjusted while in video mode? Also have you tried recording time lapses in manual mode?

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  8 років тому +3

      Thank you Harish, I will need to look more into the video to fitter about with that to see what type of settings it allows. I'm not entirely sure but I think there must be a way to allow for manual settings in that manner.
      WHY USE MANUAL SETTINGS ON VIDEO? - well if you're someone who wishes to record still setting such as an interview or someone sitting still in front of a camera in the one place it can be useful for that.
      Always remember the following:
      Aperture - determines how much light is let into the sensor (f/1.8 being brightest, f/11 being darkest), it also determines the depth of field. The wider the aperture (f/1.8) gives the shallowest depth of field meaning a blurred background and narrower aperture (f/11) gives an extended depth of field, ideal for landscapes.
      Shutter Speed / Exposure - The faster the shutter speed the less light is let into the camera, the slower the shutter speed the more light is let into the camera. Faster shutter speeds will allow you to capture fast moving subjects as a still, where as slow shutter speeds can create blurring.
      ISO - The last resort, this should really only be used once you've exhausted both the Aperture and Shutter Speed. For example, you may have set your aperture and shutter speed and feel you're still not getting enough light, you use the ISO. The ISO can increase the light into the camera, it's the sensitivity of light. The higher the ISO the more grain noise added thus lower quality of the image; the lower ISO number (100) allows for better quality image, I think the lowest on the G7X Mark ii is 125.
      All in all once you grasp an understanding of these you then begin to understand how video operates in much the same way.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  8 років тому

      Oh and recording time lapse? That's something I would have to test out at some point, the only reason I haven't gotten around to doing automatic things like that is because I was taught doing a lot of things manually. Perhaps this camera does allow that, I would need to test that out at some stage :)

    • @HarishChouhan

      Thanks a lot for sharing that mate. Appreciate it a lot. About to buy my first camera mainly to capture stuff when travelling and was deciding between this, Sony RX100 M4 (bad image stabilization) & Sony A6000.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  8 років тому +1

      Yeah, I heard about the Sony, it looks good but for a compact it was a bit pricey, I mean it's expensive enough in photography with DSLR's and the lenses and for me the G7X Mark ii was reasonably priced. Whichever one you choose I'm sure will have those manual settings allowing you to adjust your aperture, shutter speed and ISO and you can get fun out of it especially for your own use considering you use it for travelling with, can't fault it especially with the focal range on the camera, quality and for its size.

      This channel is of great importance to me, not only is it my personal channel away from my political stuff, it's more personal to me and is aimed at promoting myself as a photographer. In other words, I will do whatever I can in ways to help people get the best out of taking pictures.
      The way I see it, there's nothing to lose from it, everyone can learn how to use a camera, but one thing people cannot teach is people's own taste and creative imagination and that's the beauty, no two photographers are the same.
      I'm happy to see that you feel more confident with it, you reap the benefits that way, it becomes a lot more fun and therefore the camera is more value to you. Take it from me who has 2 Canon DSLR body camera's, okay, it's not going to have the same quality I would get from using my 5D mark iii with my expensive lenses, but for what this is worth and how compact, this is a fantastic compact digital camera.
      So yes, thank you!

    • @ALifeofPayne

      That's awesome! I started a vlog channel a few months back, I invested in this camera and am really excited to get to use it! Quick question though, i upload my videos from imovie to youtube and they seem to come out with less than HD quality. Is there a trick to uploading a video that I'm missing? I'm shooting in FHD 60fps. Any tips or a new video about uploading to youtube?

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому

      Fantastic, I began back late 2010 to early 2011, my original channel I posted out a lot of Scottish accent videos that became really popular. My accent videos to history and travel vlogs coincided with my political stuff, unfortunately the politics brings a lot of hate and I admittedly so get caught up in it all and before you know it nasty things are said back and forth.
      To me, I actually prefer this channel, because I don't give a damn what people's political views are, everyone shares a common love for photography, technology etc and there's this shared passion and love as a community in doing what we love.
      In terms of upload quality? Oh, good question, it is difficult because I have been using Adobe Premiere Pro CC for so long, then again at the time I ordered the student discounted offer Adobe provide because I was studying at college and required it for certain college work, plus I do a lot of video recording from home. In order to ensure a video is HD quality, you need to ensure:
      *1.* that the quality of the video you record at on the camera is 1920x1080, finding 1080p on the Canon G7X Mark ii is relatively straightforward.
      *2.* Ensuring that the video software (iMovie) settings is set to 1920x1080 if it's 1080p HD, if it's 720p then different res. I'm not sure if iMovie enables that?
      *3.* Exporting your video with 1080p settings, I would imagine iMovie has a standard 1080p setting for exporting at that resolution.
      I'll need to personally take a look into iMovie software and maybe I'll do a video on that myself, because that could benefit people who are interested. I am also planning on doing the same with Adobe Premiere Pro CC.
      As you mention, you're recording at Full HD 1080p 60fps, so it's the video software itself, does the software have preferences/settings, check that, because I reckon there will be somewhere to fix the aspect ratio, if not, I would imagine the export settings of a video to save out allows you some option to set it to 1080p.
      I hope you manage to sort that problem out and don't fret to ask me any questions as I am more than happy to help you if any.

    Quick question for you Scott. Regarding the aperture. Are you able to be at any focal length and still reach f/1.8? Or is the aperture limited to the focal length? Also. Do you think it's worth it if I sell my d5300 and buy this camera? I feel like my Nikon d5300 is a bit bulky.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому +1

      Thank you for your question Geordie, the answer is no, if you zoom in with that camera say to 100mm at its maximum the widest aperture that would accept is I'm sure f/2.2 this is no different to my 150mm to 600mm f5.0 - f/6.3 lens, when you zoom into 600mm the widest aperture is f/6.3 not f/5.0. I'm not entirely clued up on the internals of camera lenses but if I remember one lecturer once telling me it's to do with the internal lens elements moving further from the camera when you zoom in.
      You also find that with a wide aperture of say f/1.8 might not blur the background out as much if you have a focal length of say 28mm which is regarded as wide angle, use a focal length of 70mm for example or zoom into 100mm and set the aperture to f/2.2 and compare how blur the backgrounds are to your subjects to that if you use a wide open aperture of say f/1.8 whilst shooting wide angle at 28mm and you'll see the difference.
      For me DSLR is more for those for a professional use, I mean let me put it this way, I'm seeking to push myself into the professional world of photography and what's great about the DSLR camera's is the ability to buy other lenses that are interchangeable, meaning I can swap from my 70-200mm lens and shoot with a fixed focal length lens like my 85mm. Some photographers strictly stick to just one lens and they believe "you know what? Who cares about all these other lenses, all you need to do is work with your feet." I can see the logic behind that but there is a certain truth to the fact that if you shoot a portrait of someone with telephoto their features appear better than it would if someone shot them wide angle.
      Photography is not something strict, there's no guidelines saying do this or don't do that, so if you shoot a portrait with wide angle, hell knock yourself out, not a problem, however for a professional shooting studio shots head and shoulders they're not going to do that to people, unless they want to be cruel.
      What is nifty about this wee camera is the fact it's something that fits in your pocket, it's readily there to shoot with and you can take some fantastic pictures. I suppose the downside would be that if forced to use higher ISO range it begins to show a lot more grain noise even at 800 ISO which can be a little bit of a downfall, it's not that negative though. I can tell you this; for those who are not working professionals they wouldn't need to worry, this is a wonderful wee camera and is so wonderful and compact, your DSLR, well it was designed more for working professionals.
      I know that from carrying around the gear that I do that you grow a certain desire to carry one of these around because you have a different view, an appreciation of its size and for the ability of a little handheld camera you can't go wrong. In my opinion it's a nice focal range between 28mm to 100mm and f/1.8 aperture to f/11 is workable. I hope to do working tutorials at some stage.

      Hi Gary,
      What is great about this camera is that it is small and compact, light, easy to carry around and takes good pictures. You wouldn't expect the optics of this camera to be anything like what you'd get from an expensive full-frame DSLR with good glass (lens optics) but for what it's worth, it's a fantastic camera. I think the only downside would be the battery, it's fairly decent, being sure to carry with you a charger and maybe even a spare battery could help.
      Overall though, I love it. It takes good video footage for 1080p and good pictures and the fact this digital camera enables you to manually fix your aperture, shutter speed/exposure as well as the ISO is a bonus. Worth it in my opinion and you may even find it will have dropped in price, can't fault that. Since you used a phone, this is better, plus it captures raw files if you ever decide to raw edit.

    The reason for the PAL vs NTSC differences in framerate is down to mains electricity frequency. Early in television history, everything was easier if the framerates of TVs and recording equipment matched the frequency of the mains. I'm not sure why modern cameras still make us select between the two rather than just giving us multiple framerates to choose from. Seems kind of silly, although I think with some cameras it actually adjusts timing hardware or something.

      Hi Preston, thanks for your interesting question;
      When you turn that dial with the -1, -2, -3, +1, +2, +3 this changes your exposure compensation. For someone starting out it can look daunting but what it simply means you can stop down your exposure if it over exposes, it's something bit more advanced but it's easy once you grasp it.
      In other words the shortest way I can explain this; you probably find camera's can struggle between exposing for white and black. So let's say I was photographing a white subject, if using spot metering (again this is a bit more advanced) and I expose for a white subject, the camera automatically exposes for the white but under exposes surrounding it.
      There is no doubt a lot more information out there on that but don't worry about that dial, it's something you can definitely look into, research UA-cam for *_'Exposure Compensation'_* which I hope that could at least help explain between photographing white and black subjects :)

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому +1

      Oh and on a quick note that dial allows you to compensate your exposure, so if it under exposes you can use that to increase exposure compensation or decrease exposure compensation, worth knowing.

      It's a wonderful wee camera and you can't go wrong with it, the fact it's fast and easy to just use on the go for things like that is what I love about it. Add to that you know yourself without me even telling you that if you went out there into the market with a DSLR looking at lenses the cost of a f/1.8 aperture with a zoom range of 28mm to 100mm it's a lot of money. Don't get me wrong you know the 50mm I'm sure is like £72-£100 and that is an exception.
      And thanks, I was pleased with the results and some of the shots I used towards my final 6.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  5 років тому

      I just realised this comment here, the answer is that a digital camera will never produce quite the same level of quality. Yes, it will produce pretty decent results and you'll get some good pictures out of it and it is more than plausible, but it's finding how to independently fire off flash manually yourself or using a continuous light source. It's not like having a DSLR where you can have a remote flash trigger and then fire off flash units separately.
      The reason being is because the digital cameras like that are not designed for professional use and the quality overall isn't the same, especially if you were to get A3 prints made up you would notice quality difference. Then again, it would be unfair for me to compare the wee camera to that of something like my 5D Mark iii.
      For what it's worth, this wee camera is decent for what it does :)

      Absolutely, just consider the simple fact the G7Xii is MULTIPLE times better than any DSLR camera the professionals used a few years back. These DSLR cameras they used back then even had lower specification/resolution than some mobile phones today. Still they won prices and they were used for technical photography, billboards, medical photography, glossy fashion magazines etc.
      Today, when compare we find that the G7Xii is miles ahead technically of what the professional used back then; so of course this is good camera for taking photos only.
      Personally I think this camera is a masterpiece, it's now 2019 I just bought myself a G7xii (second hand) to use as a companion for my DSLR.
      The G7Xii is fantastically powerful if you know how to handle it :)

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому +3

      Hello, Kinda Karla, for someone who is into photography, you will find that cropped sensor DSLR cameras are ideal, the reason being is because you can get a kit lens with a cropped sensor which is basic. The DSLR enables you to upgrade your lens at any given time. Perhaps I should do a video on the different types of lenses. You generally find that a fixed focal length lens may have better optics but forces you to move your feet to get closer or further from the subject you photograph, but the zoom lenses can able you to zoom in or out (stating the obvious).
      I would imagine that cropped sensor camera bodies alone may cost the same price as the G7X Mark ii, this solely depends though on how new the model is, for example; I own the Canon 70D and the Canon 80D has been out for a wee while now, so the prices are different, you can check that for yourself.
      I recommend checking out MPB Photographic, their site is pretty good for second hand lenses or camera bodies etc. I generally only go for second hand if the stuff is in good condition. You may ask why people would give away their lenses etc trading through that site then, is there something wrong with the lenses? Not necessarily, I traded in my Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS lens simply because I upgraded to the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L ii which enabled me that extra stop of light.
      The Canon G7X Mark ii is a fantastic wee camera that is useful for on the go that you can have fun with, but for someone like you solely interested in photography, a cropped sensor is good for someone starting out in photography because you may feel at a later point in upgrading the lens. Don't get me wrong, some people just buy the camera body alone then buy whatever lens it is separately. Again, depends how much you're willing to spend, bear that in mind, because full frame body camera's, that's going more into professional use and could cost you a lot more.
      Sure, a cropped sensor body may not get you a clearer or sharper picture than the full frame, you expect that, but for what it's worth you can still capture some great images and you always have that option as I say in upgrading the lens.
      DSLR cropped sensor bodies usually come recommended with a kit lens, but there are other lenses out there.
      Don't get me wrong, the G7X Mark ii captures some great images, I'm not sure it would match up to a DSLR cropped sensor with a good lens though. On a final note; cropped sensor means what it says, it's cropped, that means if you put a 85mm lens on a cropped sensor it acts like a lens zoomed in over 100mm, that's why people with a cropped sensor if they wish to get a specific lens like a 50mm, they may choose to buy the 35mm instead.
      I hope that's been helpful and if you have any further questions feel free to ask :)

    Very informative video. I have a DSLR but i don't like the bulk and weight of it. So I'm looking at Gx7 since it's portable and has manual controls. How does it do when it comes to landscape and sunset photography?

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  5 років тому

      I think the only downside of these small digital cameras is the battery life. It does have barrel distortion when you zoom in, but as you know, that can easily be fixed in Photoshop or whatnot. The quality it produces is decent, but as a Canon 5D Mark iii shooter, I'm obviously going to notice a noticeable difference in quality. For someone who is not so much a serious shooter and likes to take a lot of decent stuff for travel and on the go, it's pretty decent for that.
      I do know where you are coming from though, it's one of the critiques you will often get about using DSLR cameras, plus depending on the lens you put on, that can play into that.
      The G7X Mark ii would do a good job of capturing landscape shots setup on a tripod with a slow shutter speed, but I'm basing that off anyone who understands manual controls. Overall, it's a good wee camera for the digital range, it's not designed for professional use so it would be unfair for me to compare :)

    I use my camera only on family trips for still photography. I don't care about video or other high end features (eg. 4K video, electronic view finder, etc). I only want the highest image quality. So is this camera the best in it's price range?
    It would be very helpful if u give your opinion.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому

      I was playing about with the G7X Mark ii and discovered you can actually record video using manual settings so I'm definitely going to get around to doing a vide on that soon enough. The power of being able to control your camera manually is that if you take a picture of a particular subject you can choose to blur out the background. I love photography and is my passion, great wee camera. For the likes of yourself though that mainly uses it for family and holiday photographs on the go etc, it's great.
      As for price range?
      My Canon 70D cropped sensor body alone would have cost £500 brand new, I got it for just under £1,000 but that was with the kit lens that was the 18-135mm IS STM, you tend to pay extra for image stabilisation as well as for things like the wider aperture on lenses. The fact you're getting a zoom lens from this camera from say 28-100mm is impressive as that is versatile and you're getting a 1.8-2.8 aperture, what does that mean?
      When you zoom in you'll find the widest aperture you can open it to is about 2.5 or 2.8 I'm sure, whereas if you zoom out to 28mm on the camera you'll get its widest aperture, that's because the more you zoom in it stops down in aperture. Bit complicating to explain but I can certainly tell you that for a digital compact camera with that quality, zoom range and aperture it's fantastic value for its money, no surprise though it has to make up for having no 4K and at that price range you're somewhat competing against DSLR's.

      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому

      I couldn't quite tell you about the other camera unfortunately Gabi, however with my advice if you look into the other camera there are several things you may look into such as the ISO range; how well does the camera handle low light, in other words with a higher ISO range 800 and above is there a lot of grain noise or less? The second thing to look out for is the aperture range, what's the widest open aperture, is it f/1.4 or f/1.8 or f/2.8 it all depends, the wider that aperture the more light it will let in, this has its advantage because it enables you to use faster shutter speeds. Another thing is the zoom range.
      What I can tell you is that this camera is fantastic in that regard, I'm not sure it has the greatest battery life but I can live with that, it's a fantastic camera, takes great pictures and you can't go wrong with the zoom range and aperture range you get with it, to have the manual mode function to control ISO, shutter speed and aperture for a compact camera is fantastic :)

    Great video! I've noticed this camera adjusts to lighting very often to a point where it looks unprofessional in people's videos. For example if i were recording in the direction of the sun and slowly turned my body the other way, then the camera would make a obvious adjustment to the change in lighting. I cant stand how that looks when people have that in their videos. With that being said is there a way to prevent that sudden change from happening so frequently?? It just makes a very amateur look when i see that in UA-cam videos.

      I discovered you can actually adjust manually in manual settings with recording video that can save you a lot of bother if you wish to do this more professionally. You are correct though, many people love this option purely for the vlogging and I can understand the reason why to a certain degree. As you know when it comes to doing video professionally it requires a lot of different scenes whether closeup, wide angle and what not, but yes there is a way to adjust it manually so you can set your own settings.

      Interesting question, Rubitube, for something that is less professional you could use auto on the dial mode, if however you wish more control 'P' dial mode enables you to use semi-automatic, what this dial mode enables is the camera will automatically set the exposure (shutter speed) and aperture for you, but you can manually set your ISO. Depending on the lighting conditions you are in. TV dial mode allows you to set your ISO and shutter speed, but the camera automatically sets your aperture. AV mode which is aperture priority, it enables you to set your aperture and ISO, but the camera auto sets the shutter speed exposure.
      These dial modes are handy for beginners and sometimes professionals use things like aperture priority, reason being? Light changes dramatically outside, aperture priority keeps up and adjusts with light change. The more professional type image you would want a tripod and manual mode for that. With manual mode you can set the aperture to f/11 to ensure you get the extended depth of field and then setting a slow shutter speed to allow a lot more light in, with a low ISO set to 125 on the G7X Mark ii.
      Hope this helps :)

    nice review Scott. I am looking for a camera mainly for photography. but video I consider as well. it is strange but in May 2018 I have only two compact cameras for choose that have 1 inch image sensor, tilting screen. It is canon g7x mark ii and panasonic lx15. They both are available in Poland at the same prise level. I was near buying canon because of the 4 x zoom, tilt screen, external charger and probably easier using. I have been learnt that g7x mark ii performance good foto in low light. but everywhere there are complaining about noise during focusing. does it disturb you to use the camera? does it occur during photo shooting as well? or only during filming only? Have your heard anything about mentioned panasonic to be able to compare with Canon? I ll be appreciate for your response. thank you.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому

      Thank you, Rene, I can see people's point about the Canon G7X Mark ii that it's not the best performer in low light when taking pictures, you tend to find anywhere from 800 ISO above it starts to introduce noise. It doesn't affect me the same because I'm now skilled in photography in terms of the operation of a camera, therefore, if I were to use the camera in low light, I would seek to compensate by introducing independent light source.
      In all honestly, however, I'm a photographer, I own a 70D cropped sensor and 5D Mark iii, so for serious photography that is what I use, I really only use this small compact because it's simple, easy to carry around on the go and useful, but like I say, just from introducing independent light source you can use that to good effect. An example would be that if you were taking a portrait of someone outside at night, take the person over to where there is a light, it could be a shop window or a street light or whatever it may be and you can get some surprisingly good results.
      I must say though, 800 ISO is not too bad. ISO is mostly something you would concern yourself over when taking pictures. Again, in video if the camera is still on a tripod, you can introduce your own independent light source, just depends whether that person would invest in that or could even be a normal light source from a well lit room.

    • @reneka
      @reneka 6 років тому +1

      Thank you for quick answer, Scott. You must know I am totally amator photographer so in my hand this camera can be noisy until I get control over ISO? I guess. On the other hand people mostly give very positive opinions about this camera not mentioning about the noise. If I start with automatic mode I will not be able to have any influence on the ISO. Maybe it is not the issue in the street but in church, for example, where light conditions are not good it can be. Silence is rather desirable there. Anyway I need something compact with relatively good quality result, and have always with me. Previously I thought about something with larger zoom due to photography of the landscapes. But compacts have very small sensors then. Canon g7x mark 2 seemed to be the better choice. I will use it more often in the cities, during family and friends meetings etc. Anyway it does not have Panorama mode, as I know. How to manage this if I go to the mountains?
      Do you often use Flash in-built?
      Greetings from sunny and warm Cracow.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому

      One thing this camera does have settings for is the ability to turn off the red light indicator that shows up at the front of the camera when ready to take a picture, as well as the shutter noise and that might be one of the things you're talking about. I'm not so sure about the focusing engine, however.
      For me personally, I don't use flash, but that is only because for proper photography I use my DSLRs and use independent flash. Compact camera's would not be for the serious photographer, but what I can say is, for someone who would wish to take some somewhat professional looking photographs with that camera, there is a way to use independent lighting without ever using the flash by using continuous light source shining down on a subject you're photographing and setting your white balance mode to the flash icon.
      Flash on a camera is very unflattering, it makes your subjects appear flat and isn't best pleasing, you will notice that just like the sun, the light source comes down at an angle, it's why you see photographers using umbrella stands pointing down at an angle. For what it's worth, it's still useful for all that stuff and with the settings in the camera, you can turn the following off:
      • *AF-assist Beam* (set to off within menu 4, that's the red beam that shows up at the front when autofocusing.)
      • *Volume* (this allows you to turn down the volume on the various things, especially the shutter volume, I mean, if you're in a church and don't wish to disturb people when taking a picture, turn the shutter volume down and the operation volume, which is the sound you hear when going through menus. Even the sound for start-up).
      That should help you when using the camera in a quieter place.

    Hi, could you tell me something about does the camera flip the photos? I'm sure you know what I'm talking about... like some phones flip your photo when you capture it, especially selfies... so they appear differently than from what you saw while looking at the screen before capturing... does the g7x do that, and is there a setting where you can turn on or of the flipping? I don't know how it is called in photography, I hope you understand what I mean

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому

      Hi MissMeemy,
      When it comes to smartphones you tend to find that it is the applications themselves that cause that problem, for example; if you take a picture selfie shot using the normal camera app with an iPhone you'll notice it flips the image in reverse, but if you use Facebook for example and use the camera using the Facebook app itself it turns out different. So for me it's really all down to the application itself. As for the Canon G7X Mark ii, well the certain selfie shots I snapped for video thumbnails turned out fine.
      When you take a picture of yourself using this camera everything is the right way around, as if someone is staring at you, so yes hope that helps.
      It's an interesting question of whether or not you can use a setting to edit and manipulate it in that way to flip it, I've never really tried to edit on camera or looked into that but I use RAW and Photoshop. That's another quick note what is good about the camera, it shoots in RAW format, some people may not grasp what that means but I may cover that in another video. But this is an interesting topic and I may do a short video on that at some point. Oh as for flipping an image around? haha it's nothing much other than if someone wanted a little creative effect? Not sure why but it's just a mirrored image.
      Hope that helps! :)

      Thank You so much for the reply, andd I'm looking forward to another video. It would be amazing if you would do some feedback on this in a video.. I would really appreciate it. Looking into buying this camera, and I kind of have to do it as soon as possible, 'cause I need it for school. So trying to check on the specs, to make sure it's good and fitting for me.
      P.S. so, to clarify things for myself, may I ask, in conclusion, when you take a self picture on it, does it flip the photo in reverse like the normal camera app on Iphone does?

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому

      Not a problem at all MissMeemy, I know how popular this camera has been used for people doing vlogs and stuff so I will get around to explaining even more about the manual settings, especially when I cover about things like the aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I can more than understand, especially if using it for school. Like I say in terms of when you take a picture of yourself everything appears the right way round, unlike the app on the iPhone it reverses everything.

    I just got the camera and played around a little bit but the focus is very strange, can't get anything sharp. Don't have much time to do lots of research. I mostly take pictures of landscape and nature. I don't like the bokeh stuff even focus of flowers is not so good, blurred in the back but still the flower is not very sharp. Can you recommend a video about the focus stuff how to get sharp pictures? Especially landscape where you would want to have the whole picture sharp without focusing on something and then blurring the rest 🤔🤷‍♀️

      Hi, I would imagine for what you would be looking to use it for then certainly, if you have good lighting on the models face you can get good results with this camera, setting the aperture to f/1.8 for a shallow depth of field and manually increasing the shutter speed till desired exposure with a 125 ISO on this camera will get you great results, depends on the available light you use. Also depends what type of pictures you would look to take, for what you would probably use it for then I would imagine yes :)

    Great video pal, quick question, how to use manual focus ?? Can you use the front ring for manual focus ??

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому +1

      Cheers bud, with regards to manual focus the camera does have this cool function that when you switch manual focus on it should zoom close into the subject you're attempting to focus on and by holding the shutter button down half way whilst turning the ring at the front it allows you to manually focus. The manual focus option is found on the circular dial to the right of the screen listed MF underneath the macro flower symbol. May take a wee bit getting used to but handy enough once you know how. Always handy as well to ensure the screen is clean especially when manually focusing.

      Thank you, I appreciate it, I'm going to push hard to put out a lot more content. In terms of the best camera's? There's a lot of top end camera's out these days, I'm not sure what the top end Nikon is, but the new Canon 5D Mark IV is a top end camera. I own the 5D Mark iii and the body of the full frame camera's can be expensive. Likewise, the same goes for the lenses I own. Even the Sony camera's these days are remarkable in terms of how well it can handle low light with higher ISO range.
      For people entering into photography at an affordable range, if they don't mind taking pictures but using their feet with no zoom, having a cropped sensor camera like a Canon EOS 70D or the 80D with a 50mm lens that can cost between £70 to £100 is ideal. But yes, in terms of DSLR's they are expensive, including the lenses. You tend to pay for the aperture as well as extra if paying for IS (image stabilisation).
      I'm very fortunate because I own expensive gear, such as I have the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L ii USM lens and the quality and sharpness of that lens is stunning, especially onto the 5D mark iii body. You can still get some great photographs though from cropped sensor camera's with cheaper lenses.

    Hi, do you some settings recommendation for filming while walking? I tried my G7X Mark II and the image is blurry and the quality is not good. It seems like my Canon G15 made a much better job for filming but maybe my settings on the G7X are wrong. Thank you!

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому +1

      Hi Steven,
      I recently covered briefly in a video on settings for vlogging with the Canon G7X Mark ii which you can check out if you haven't seen it yet. The problem with outside vlogging is that lighting changes, especially depending on the direction of the sun or if you pass by a building that blocks the sun, even then if clouds pass over, you'll find lighting changes dramatically, which is why for walking the automatic settings may be more preferable than manual setting.
      As for the blurry image, yes, your camera might be set on manual mode and that in itself requires fixing the focus manually, not ideal when walking, it's good if you're in the one spot recording speaking to the camera, but for focusing you want autofocus. If you check my other video, I showed how you can switch between manual and autofocus, both in the settings video for vlogging and on the Q&A.
      See, ideally Steven, manual focusing is more if you're in one position, you will find for walking about you're best using autofocus as I say, hope that helps and if you have any further questions, don't hestitate to ask.
      I'm currently redecorating, but soon as I get all that done I'll be sure to post up more videos soon, so yes hope that helps.

    Andreas from Denmark :-)

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому +1

      Hi Andreas,
      for something which is small and compact, it takes good 1080 50p / 60p video, that's if you ever do use it for video. The 60p is only available I think on 1080 if the camera is set to American NTSC is it? I think that's American.
      In terms of picture quality, it's good for what it is worth, the fact it allows manual function to take pictures is good, although the only downside is that if forced to use higher ISO grain noise begins to show at 800 above, it's not too bad. I would imagine using the camera on auto as well would be pretty good, so it does have good all round functionality.
      The only downside of course I would say is the issue that it doesn't have an external audio input for microphone.
      Is the picture quality as sharp as a top end full frame DSLR like my 5D Mark iii whilst using quality lenses? Of course not but I can tell you this, I took some photographs with it for my graded unit and the picture quality was still pretty impressive for what it is worth.
      Add to this it has the flip screen for taking a selfie which is good for both you and your girlfriend. The fact it has a f/1.8 aperture means that when you open the aperture to f/1.8 if using manual mode you'll get a nice blurred background, but of course fixing exposure by increasing shutter speed can get you some nice results.
      For me it's worth it, I take it everywhere I go and it's always there incase there ever is anything I see and is good for shooting on the go.

    Scott, i have gotten this camera last month. It was a hard catch. Seems everyone no stocks so i got to reserve it with the shop. Would like to check with you,
    a) Which is the recommended megapixels do you set to for photography? I will want to view it on a PC or on a LED TV.
    b) Is 1080p 60fps the best video options to choose? , since it is the maximum setting i can choose from.

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  8 років тому

      Put it this way, I shoot with my Canon 70D and mostly my 5D Mark iii full frame camera, anything that shoots above 18mp is at least ideal for professional photography and the reason the higher megapixel range is better is because if you were going to print large scale, this tells in terms of the quality. So for example if a business wished to buy one of your images or use one of your images for printing billboard size you could imagine the size required to print at that scale. For your use it's sufficient because you'd be seeking to view it on computer and a TV so you'd be impressed by the overall quality.
      1080 at 60fps is the best for that camera, it doesn't record 4K unfortunately but in terms of recording at 1080 with 60fps the quality is pretty impressive and I say that from the perspective whilst using a 5K iMac monitor. I can see 1080 with 60fps being around for quite a long time yet.

    • @oceaneleven537
      @oceaneleven537 8 років тому +1

      Yes for mine case, is probably using 20 megapixels for photos and 1080p 60fps for videos, i do it for travelling and leisure but i do want crisp video and pictures qualities hence i will use the maximum settings provided in this g7x mark ii. Thanks for your advise!

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  8 років тому

      For best picture quality good available lighting is key and to try and use the lowest ISO as possible, reason being that the higher you raise the ISO the lesser the picture quality as it introduces grain noise, using manual mode can help you achieve that, depends for what you're shooting. Someone new to photography may find TV mode useful for shooting fast moving subjects or aperture priority mode (AV). Overall though it's a good camera.

    • @oceaneleven537
      @oceaneleven537 8 років тому

      there's a lot for me to learn. i usually use auto mode so a lot to learn on the way. for the video mode there is a 1080p 24fps in ntsc mode, is said to be cinematic movie mode, does it mean that using this mode will be like a movie? and which country are your from, i guess somewhere from europe?

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  8 років тому

      That is correct, you tend to find that films are shot in 24fps or at least that is what I believe, I couldn't tell you the ins and outs. From my experience 60fps appears more natural on UA-cam, the speed of the recording matches more accurately to the person in real life. And where I am from, I was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland's largest city.

    I returned Canon g7x ii, because it was very noisy in mute mode (I mean shutter sound for street). Plus with AF it has knocking sounds and you can feel vibration in hands. I tried two new cameras. It was very annoying fir me. How is your camera? Do you feel vibration and does it make like small knocking sound when focusing?

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому

      I can understand your frustration, although it must be said there is the option in the settings menu where you turn both the AF light and the shutter sounds both off, in fact that's what I had done when out shooting some street portraiture. As for the vibration thing? I suppose when you are autofocusing you can feel a small jitter of the motor inside, saying that something like that I didn't notice until you pointed it out, you are right though it's a small noise you can hear focusing.
      For me I got it as something on the side for wee quick snapshots when I don't have my DSLR's in hand if I have them in my bag or roller case just as a pocket thing to take out and take shots. The only small thing picture wise I've noticed is that if you zoom in and take shots you'll notice barrel distortion, so it has its quirks. I also love it for it's video functionality, when you have good light the quality video wise is nice and with the flip screen that's what's good about it.
      I remember years ago the last digital camera I had never had anything like that, that was back in the time when 7mp was something special, now you have these camera phones etc up to 20mp etc.

    • @rginjc
      @rginjc 7 років тому

      Thanks for reply. Of course I did turn all that I can off. But shutter's sound was still noticeable, just like mechanical sound. My old Sony hx90 was so quiet that Canon was too sharp for my ears. I loved camera, but I was not able to stand with all this noises. I am too sensitive to it.
      And in video mode Canon don't have AF knocking feel for some reason.

    Would you say it's good for landscape?

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  6 років тому +1

      Hello, 라사, it would be an unfair comparison if I were to sit here and compare it to that of my Canon 5D Mark iii in terms of quality, I have expensive lenses and the 5D Mark iii is an impressive camera. However, for a digital camera that is point and shoot, it's pretty impressive for what it is, the fact it is a point and shoot digital camera and has manual functionality that allows you to fix your aperture, shutter speed and ISO independently is a nice feature.
      You can take pretty decent pictures with the G7X Mark ii. Now, obviously I am going to notice a difference in quality because comparing it to the 5D Mark iii it's not going to be as sharp, but I did capture several landscape shots to give you as an example, so I will try and link them as samples.
      This photograph here I can tell you when I was out on a 1 to 1 tour with a professional wildlife photographer, Neil McIntyre in the Cairngorms in Scotland he helped me improve my landscape photography and this was one of the spots he took me to. So I personally do not take credit for the entirety of this image, just that I already know how to operate the camera. It was shot with the G7X Mark ii, so here it is:
      i67.tinypic.com/zk33nk.jpg
      Let me know if you can access it. Also note, the post processing I did on it wasn't the best looking back on it, I actually used that photograph as part of my portfolio and had it printed A3 size and it still looked pretty damn good. Another sample I used for the portfolio shot with the G7X Mark ii that went towards my graded unit was this:
      i68.tinypic.com/314bkw5.jpg
      It should allow you to enlarge the image and click on raw image link at the bottom of it to view it larger on the screen. Again, my own post processing but what you're looking for is the quality of the image. So yes, it's pretty decent, take that from someone who goes out shooting with a 5D Mark iii and Canon 24-70 f/2.8 ii lens and you'll know where I'm coming from.
      Here is a few samples from the street shots:
      i63.tinypic.com/1zn0cxw.jpg
      i63.tinypic.com/16kx7vr.jpg
      So overall, I wouldn't go expecting the quality of this camera to be anything like a full-frame professional body camera, of course not, but for what it's worth for capturing pictures, it's pretty good for snapshots and that's what it's all about. You can see that from the images I've provided here :)

    Does it have a timer mode for selfies or family portraits?

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  5 років тому

      Hello, yes, at the top of the camera the dial that allows you to switch what mode you want the camera on, I've checked through all of them and it enables the self-timer function.
      All you do is choose the mode you wish to set it on, so, for example; setting it to auto and then next to the flip screen on the back of the camera that you will be looking at, there is another dial with a middle button saying 'Q Set,' this button brings up a menu on either side and on that circular dial 'press' up or down, that's either the INFO button (down) or the little icon up top with squares and what looks similar to a book. Those allow you to cycle that menu until you reach the little icon indicating self-timer which is a clock icon. All you do then is press right to cycle through the self-timer options between 10 seconds, 2 seconds or even 'C' for custom, it asks you to press the ring function button and you can even enable a custom timer for longer than 10 seconds which is good.
      NOTE: going back to what I mentioned when cycling through the menu to get to the self-timer option, remember I stated 'press' the buttons, that is because around the dial those are buttons, it does also act as a function where you can turn the wheel, but that turn of the wheel changes settings of what you have highlighted, for example:
      If you have ISO selected and you turn the dial, it'll change the ISO setting to higher or lower. It's just another way of cycling the inner menu to each function.
      I hope that hasn't confused you. All in all, it should be simple enough for you to grasp once you play around a little :)

    • @ActualCounterfactual
      @ActualCounterfactual 5 років тому

      Hi Lourdes (as I just replied to another person) this camera is fantastic for stills photos. The G7Xii is actually MULTIPLE times better than any DSLR camera the professionals used a few years back.

    How do you like the G5x in comparison?

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography
      @scottcjmckelviephotography  7 років тому

      Having briefly looked at it I think what is good about the camera is the hot shoe mount at the top of the camera, that's a bit like a DSLR in that regard. The other thing is that it is equivalent to a 24mm to 100mm focal range which is pretty good. It has a f/1.8 widest aperture similar to the G7X Mark ii and when zooming in with the camera I'm sure widest is f/2.8 at the long end.
      This may confuse some people but when you tend to zoom in with the camera the widest aperture drops down, so you wouldn't be able to open wide to f/1.8 when you zoom in.
      So for me it's a good camera, the fact you can buy any Canon speedlights for it separately to use on top to bounce flash is that small advantage.
      For me however since I'm a DSLR owner and have a Canon 70D cropped sensor and a full frame 5D Mark iii I'm pleased with the G7X Mark ii because it's small, compact, easy to use and quick for just point and shoot.
      The unfortunate thing about the G5X similar to the G7X Mark ii is the absence of the audio input socket, therefore you wouldn't be able to connect an external microphone. I suppose it all goes down to preference.

      Thank you, Don, greatly appreciated.
      It really depends in what you aim for, I mean, the Canon EOS M100 is one of the mirrorless cameras and it's rated as a good camera from what I've heard of in the past. I've never truthfully looked much into mirrorless simply because of the fact that I'm a DSLR user and have all my lenses I could have asked for. A mirrorless camera if I'm right, it does have changeable lenses and that is the difference to a compact digital camera to that of the Canon G7X Mark ii.
      Mirrorless camera's like the M100 can be good for people starting out photography. So yes, it just depends on the cost and what you're willing to go for.
      The reason I got the G7X Mark ii is how light, small and compact it is for on the go things, it's not something I would use professionally above my 5D Mark iii but is something I enjoy and takes good video footage for 1080p.

      Hi, that's fantastic that you encourage your young daughter in the creative world at such a young age and of course I would be more than happy to check that out. As a creator myself I am looking to grow my channel with a lot more videos to promote myself and my photography and I'm always happy to give advice and help others.
      *NOTE:* anyone reading this you can also check out their video in that link which I'm sure you'll enjoy! :)

      Thank you and will be updating with more videos soon. Have been very busy of late due to college work but will be updating about my nature wildlife photography graded unit project soon and will look to add a few tutorial stuff in with that and is never a problem at all, always a pleasure! :)

    what kind of that accent is?

    • @scottcjmckelviephotography

      It is Glaswegian, just me speaking a bit more proper English for the purpose of this channel when I put out content. Glaswegian people are the people who reside from the city of Glasgow in Scotland.

      Always loved the Irish folk and yes, very much like ourselves with regards to how we speak joined up at times and perhaps that can confuse a lot of people.
      I'm planning on getting more videos out soon for this channel, really want to start putting videos out frequently, just hadn't because of college but now that's over with I can concentrate on getting content out.
