Frequently Asked Questions about Ogbono Soup
My Ogbono Soup does not draw. Why?
There are 3 main reasons why your Ogbono Soup does not draw.
    1. You bought the fake Ogbono. There is another seed that looks so much like Ogbono and is sold as Ogbono seeds in Nigerian markets. First sign that you are buying the wrong seeds is if they are too cheap to be true. To confirm that the seeds are really Ogbono seeds: break the seed and rub the broken sides together, if they make a sap that draws, then you've got the real Ogbono seeds.
    2. You used packaged ground Ogbono, ground being the keyword here. Once you grind Ogbono, it starts losing its potency to draw and with time, it won't draw anymore. The exact time at which it completely loses its potency to draw will depend on: how dry the Ogbono was before the grinding took place and how well it is packaged amongst other things. Also some of the ground ogbono are so dusty that the ratio of ogbono to dust is 1:1 hence if you measure 1 cup of ogbono, technically you have 1/2 cup of ogbono in there.
    3. You fried it before adding the meat/fish stock. The ground Ogbono should only be dissolved in the palm oil NOT fried. The more you fry it, the more it loses its drawing ability till you've got no potency left. This happens even if it is the authentic Ogbono seed.

I learned to cook Ogbono in 2015 from watching Flo Chinyere's video (I picked hers over a ton of videos on UA-cam because it comes closest to, if not the same as, how my late mom used to cook hers) and ALL my Ogbono soups since then have drawn very well. In fact, I struggle to add water to achieve the consistency that I want and I buy my Ogbono here in the US. If you follow what she says, you will get the same results as hers. Thanks Aunty Flo. I went to UNN myself. Maybe you'll show us how to cook fio fio (native Nsukka dish). :) :) :)

I like the way you manage your oil. Thumbs up. I just hate any soup with excess oil. You really good in what you do.

Aunty Flo...this is so yummy. One of my best soups. I can cook Ogbono very delicious without these goodies cos will be above my budget and the ogbono soup will still be very delicious. Ogbono soup is one of the soups one can cook with just lil ingredients and it will still taste very nice!

Good day ma. I made ogbono today and it was tasting like soap. What could have been the cause. Here is how I cooked it. - I boiled my chicken with Maggi, salt and onions, set the stock aside. Put little vegetable oil on fire, put my ogbono and I was applying my chicken stock gradually tight I got my desired consistency. Left it to cook for abt 15mins and added my chicken and left it to cook for few more minutes. Then dished it and started tasting soap.

I've never tried Ogiri in ogbonno soup. I'm going to add it when next I'm making ogbonno. It's so true that covering ogbonno helps it to draw better. I learnt that in one of your videos and I've been covering my pot of ogbonno each time I'm cooking it.
