  • Helen, Georgia is an American logging town turned fake Bavarian village on the Chattahoochee River in the Appalachian Mountains. Come with me and explore the town's history and the remarkable transformation from a dying sawmill town in the 1960s into one of Georgia's top tourist attractions.

I went to college in north Georgia where I was also stationed in the Army. Having spent several years in Germany as an Army brat the Bavarian veneer of Helen did not appeal to me, but this video was well made. Thanks Scott

There is a town in the North Cascades in Washington State that did the same thing many years ago...Leavenworth, Washington. It's especially beautiful in the winter...snow, lights, sledding in the park for kids. Oh, and lots of good Bavarian food!

Leavenworth is definitely on my visit list. I'd like to do a comparison, there's also Solvang, CA.

We went to Leavenworth yesterday. It was beautiful…snow on the ground, shopping, eating and kids sledding in the park!

I remember going to Solvang when I was a kid…I think it was a Swedish theme.

Helen is pretty fun! It’s a nice little getaway from Atlanta and it’s usually very affordable.

I'd never even heard of this place; this is so cool. What an amazing comeback for the town! Thanks for showing us this place; now I know where to go if I'm ever on a roadtrip nearby.

Unexpectedly drove through there, kept going, it looked like a serious tourist trap. Don't get me wrong it was pretty cool looking.

As an Houstonian/San Antonioian/Austinian living in Europe, if & when I do go back to the US, this will be on my short list of places I'd want to live in. I am sold, cities should exist for people, not cars.
