Hey! You’ve just made me a HAPPY MAN!! I just received my new Aerophone Pro! And been trying to figure it out... I’ll be honest! I’ve been WAITING ON YOU! You make things so much EASIER! Thank you Sir!😅
Alistair is a fantastic teacher. the pace is comfortable and he's the kind of guy you want to sit back with a glass of wine and talk about Grover Washington's Winelight Album. A plus!
Trying to unlearn oboe/clarinet fingering and learn Sax fingering. Just got the ae-30 - so exciting! Thank you so much for your very professional presentations.
Thank you so much for this! I made a purchase of the Pro and thought I can just open it and noodle my heart out. Then I had a peek of the manual that came with this and it had me spooked, overwhelmed you could say. This is wonderful step by step process!
I played with mine for hours after I got it last Thursday March 12! I haven't played in 3 decades so my lower lip is sad and my embouchure is super sore! there's an update available so I think that I will wait to set up stuff until after I run the update. For other users, be aware that in order to update this, you will need a USB C flash drive. This is also super great for people who were really good at one point but haven't played in forever. You get good sounds right off the bat so you don't get discouraged, but it still cares about things like smooth fingering and breath control or it will tell you you're missing stuff.
The manual at some point says the Memory Drive (they are incapable of saying USB Flashdrive) should be formatted on the AE-30, of course the manual search fails to find anything about formatting. What type of file system is needed ? Fat16, Fat32, exFAT.....My guess is that it should not be NTFS. Help !
Hi Alistair, I hope you are doing well with this pandemia, I got my AE-30 Pro two days ago, I haven’t have the time yet to explore it in deep, but thanks for putting out this video, made my life easier. I’m going to join the isax group in FB, thanks again for this great video... congrats
Just ordered mine - my very first wind synth! Hoping that it will be here this weekend so that I can spend some time getting to grips with it. Thanks for this really helpful video Alistair.
Thank you so much- I just got one of these yesterday and your video saved me as I was starting up! Will definitely move on to watch the rest of your series…
Alistair thank you so much for your incredibly thought out and informative videos!!! I am so happy and grateful that I can go to your videos and begin to enjoy my Aerophone Pro more and more each day!!! Thank you so much Alistair!!!
Wonderful rundown of the AE-30 as usual. Alistair , you are an absolute pleasure. I expect my 30 sometime this week or next . Sadly the snow storm in New York has things delayed. But your video is helping me to prepare.
Been sitting on the Edge of the chair, waiting for you to present some more on th AE-30. Waiting for my own to land soon. Hope you are planning courses - it seems like it Can do so much - compared to the AE-10. A real Pro tool - i hopefully Can learn to “master” over the next ten years ;) i is certainly my investment for my retirement. Keep up your excellent work.
Alistair, I cannot express how much I appreciate what you do. You are the patron saint of the wind synth! Not even the “specialists” in the stores know anything about this instrument, that they’re selling, and the user manual is an inch thick! My Aero Pro comes TODAY! - so this tutorial is right on time. I’ll probably go through this one a dozen times or more, as well as the others you have (that I’ve already been through), and then wait for the next one. I’m pretty sure your videos and the wind synth will be the only thing happening in my studio for the next several days. PLEASE keep them coming. Once again, THANK YOU!! You are greatly appreciated. . . a quick question; Can I midi this through my D-50 module and use them together? Thanks. G
Just got mine in the mail like two hours ago. Been playing for two hours straight by the way… The samples are WAY BETTER than you can tell from this video. This is so much fun!
Thank you Alistair for posting this. You do such a great job explaining this stuff. I hope my new Aerophone AE-30 get delivered today. It was supposed to be here yesterday but I think FedEx might have lost it. I might be playing mine tonight if FedEx gets their act together.
@@isax.academy I just got an email from FedEx. They found my lost Aerophone AE-30 Pro and they told me is on it's way and it should be here tonight! I am so happy. I am doing the forbidden happy dance. Now to play your set up instructions again.
@@isax.academy I hope your order from Canon comes soon. Thank you for these wonderful videos. Hopefully I get to meet you at the 2022 Winter NAMM...keep our fingers crossed.
Hi Alistair, another great and informative video. Eagerly awaiting delivery of my Aerophone Pro (which I purchased mainly due to your previous videos about it).
This is without doubt the most helpful video on any subject I’ve ever come across on UA-cam. Thank you so much. I’ve just bought on Aerophone Pro as a result of watching your video. I’m thrilled with it so far. The only question I have at this stage is about updating the firmware. The on-screen instructions say the USB memory stick should be formatted in the aerophone pro. I can find absolutely no way of doing this. Any thoughts would be most welcome. Thanks again.
Hi. I think most USB stick will work straight away. If it doesn't try formatting to FAT 32 on a computer first. I believe the instructions are on the Roland website.
Just got my AE30 a couple days ago. The manual is not clear at all. The difference between the Favorite sound vs.User sound is not explained. Luckily, your tutorial video just came up in time. It is very helpful as always. Thanks.
Another brilliant tutorial well done Alistair I’m worried this might be a bit to technological for me I think I’ll need an electronics course 🤓Andy Hibbs
This was extremely helpful; thanks so much. Two questions: 1) Where can I find a list of the menu categories and their subparts? 2) Where can I find a list of your AE 30 videos? Thanks again.
First, I want to thank so much for your teaching on electronic wind instruments you are a gifted musician and teacher. I am very excited about the Roland Pro. My question can you change the fingering as in the AE 10, I am a flute player. If it doesn’t would it be hard to change to sax fingering. Thank you Charles
Hi. I'm sure you'd find the fingering quite similar but I believe the pro has room for up to 36 of your own fingerings as well, so you could set your own combinations if you like.
once again a great and very well done insight from you as a experienced pro. thx 🙏. and i am very happy to see that roland made a huge step forward with this windcontroller, for example the bite behaviour 😉 as a “WX senior” this could be very good choice for me. all the best!
hello got mine and i am a first time player i noted that the instrument is an interesting one however its difficult to transission from one octave to the other which i know will come with time am always stuck at going to the low octave or hi octave
Hi Alistair, Thanks for the great video! I just got my AE-30 and I followed your tips and I have a question. I set up the breath control for intonation but I noticed it does not work on every sound. Some sound responds to my dropping the jaw or to my vibrato some sound doesn’t, and I cannot see any obvious reason for that. Any advice
OK I found it, I share it here in case someone else is struggling with the same issue. Among "scene settings" you have one called "assign source" with values "System" or "Scene". If you set it to "System" it will use the same the default settings, if you set it to scene it means you are overwriting the default settings with the local setting for this scene. For instance the "assign source" for "Sentimental Lead" is set to "Scene", meaning it will not use the bite control you have set for the system as default unless you change it to "System" and then save it as a user sound. i hope this may be of help. Cheers
Thank you Alastair! Your fantastic videos were helpful in my decision to purchase the Aerophone Pro. I now want to use it to learn saxophone fingerings and reading music. Question: suppose I want to start with tenor or alto saxophone sound and sheet music - what is the correct key setting I should dial in? Do I just leave it in B flat for Tenor for example? Or, is it easier than that - do I simply dial in the the concert key of the music I am reading?
This can be confusing. If the music has been written say for tenor saxophone it may well say “Tenor saxophone in Bb”. In that case you’d be better to set the transposition to Bb. Same for Eb saxophone set the transpose to Eb. The fingering of course remains the same. So a ‘G’ is three fingers in the left hand on Alto or Tenor. The sound that comes out is different but it means that we only have to learn one fingering system for all the saxophones. The music takes care of the right sound coming out. I hope that makes sense.
Hi Alistair (and viewers)! I would really appreciate some tips on how to hold the Aerophone Pro, and on good embouchure. I'm asking as someone for whom the Aerophone Pro is their first wind instrument.
I am delighted to watch your video this morning and fortunately mý Aerophone 30 pro. which l have place order since last 2weeks came yesterday evening , l play saxophone in my Church pls can get me a home teacher for an hour coach 2times weekly Sir thanks.
Your videos are VERY helpful, thanks! What stand can you recommend for the aerophone pro? For my AE 10 I used the SAXRAX, but it does not fit anymore.....
Thank you very much Alistair for your very informative and enthusiastic videos on the Aerophone. Looking forward to the next one on the Aerophone Pro! A question I have: have you found some kind of rack or stand to be used with the Aerophone Pro? I wrote to SaxRax if I can use the stand for the AE-10 but they couldn't tell me because they hadn't got a Pro model the time i asked.
Hey Alistair your videos are sooooo helpful! I always wait on your opinion before jumping into any wind synth... Wondering if you've tried midi out (old school) to an external module and if it's possible to combined both the internal AE 30 pro sounds with said module or multiple modules? I own quite a few of them including Ingo's Xpression and XpressO.
Hello Alistair! Thanks a lot for all yours lessons... Sorry about my english, I' m writing from Spain... I got the Roland AE20 from 1year ago...I' getting better with the instrument, and I just to play now a lot in live concerts with It (including flamenco stile..) The only thing that I dont like much of this aerophone is the keyboard fingering of few notes, specialy the Eb key (I'm flutist..), cause if I leave press that key (like we do with the flute or sax..) during I goin up with a escale (B Mayor per example..) the notes of that scale will change, etc... I'm thinking seriously to change from the AE20 to the AE30 Do you think that with the AE30PRO this kind of problems with the fingering could be get better?? Thanks a lot for your time!! All the Best Agustín Carrillo
Hi Allistar, first of all I want to thank you for everything you have done with your videos.. without I could feel lost!! ..then I need to ask you: 1) is there a pc panel for Windows? ..I followed the instructions to save some sounds I bought from the Cloud and I don't know where I saved them on the AE30 .. I feel so stupid!
Thank you for this information Alistair! I just received mine and I ran into a bit of trouble trying to get it to work as an instrument in Ableton. I've been trying to get it to work as a source and not a midi controller because I like its sounds so much, so I was wondering if its possible to achieve that through the USB cable. If you have any insight into this I'd be delighted for your help!
Hi. I just tried this in Logic and it works as a sounds module. Maybe it's a routing thing? Don't forget the internal sounds are set up to receive breath control so might not work being triggered from a keyboard.
Hello Alistair, thank you for starting your series on this. I will get one of these soon. Will the Bluetooth allow us to be able to perform wirelessly? Do you foresee any latency?
To perform the internal sounds wirelessly you will need a wireless transmitter and receiver or a wireless MIDI set to control external MIDI wirelessly. However, the Bluetooth DOES allow wireless MIDI (haven't checked the latency), and it also allows you to play music from your phone etc. through your AE-30. You could use this to practice to tracks etc.
Yes Bluetooth will let us play wirelessly for Midi devices but NOT audio. You could easily get a little guitar bug for that. I've found the latency to be very good especially with a fast computer or iPad.
Alistair-thanks for these AE-30 vids. My question is: if you make several setting changes, and then have to perform a factory reset due to a firmware update, doese that wipe out the changes one has made?
Alistair, thanks again for the great info. One huge question. I use Logic Pro and cannot see the AE30 as a midi instrument. I can control other soft synths with it but I don't see it listed as a VI on the list. I have installed the driver and have it set to VENDOR. Is the only way to record the AE30 Pro to come out of the 1/4 inch jack? Surely I'm missing something. Thanks again for the help and let me know if I can donate to you some way.
I don’t think you’d see it as a virtual instrument at all. That’s something different. You should be able to select it as an audio input in your audio settings in Logic. Then record the audio from the Aerophone via usb. The next step would be to create an aggregate audio device if you want to have say an audio interface and the Aerophone via usb at the same time. If you’d like to donate you should see a Super Thanks icon you can click below the video. Many thanks.
Are the AE-10's bite control options the same as the AE 30's? That's the only thing that would matter for me, as I'd be using this almost entirely as a controller in the studio.
I keep reading about bad keys not returning/ sticking on Roland site and in buyer comments (ae-20 too) that Roland repair isn't timely returning units . I really want one but thinking getting used 10, Go , until this is fixed. I haven't read any news on updated 20, 30 to fix this...
There was some reports of inconsistencies when the AE-30 was first released. There is now a version 2 AE-30 that has the updated key mechanism. Everyone has been very happy since. The AE-20 has had very few issues.
Alistair-thanks for your answer to my question. I've been studying the Roland scene list pdf, and they include a "tone" list section also. Is it possible to play just the tones? The structures of the scenes with the tones is very reminiscent of the fm method of building performances in the yamaha TX modules.
As I understand it a Scene is made up of up to 4 Tones, so many of the Scenes are actually just a single tone. You can go into the app and choose a single tone for your Scene if you like.
Excellent video my ae30 should be with me early next week looking forward to it Just a question for you Allistor ,I also have Yamaha wx11,wx5 which I play in conjunction with the vl70m no problems,l also have a ewi5000 and a Roland xv5050 no problem when both of them are connned, the problem arises when I connect the ewi to the Vl70m the voices seem to get all mixed up ,you pick a trumpet voice and something different appears ,I have 2 vl70m,one has the Patchman chip in it ,and the other is as factory settings ,cannot remember which one I connected it to , Would you have any thoughts on this ,could it be the ewi or the vl70 m ? Thanks again
It sounds like something is sending out a program change message. Can you try to just plug the EWI directly into the Yamaha without anything else connected?
I am having issues with the key changing when i change instrument types. I have the Aerophone 20 set for Bb and it plays perfect when I use string settings but when I change to Flute or Accordion it goes out of tune ( almost a key change). Have you ever experienced this?
I have problem and question: it seems the 2nd key from bottom not quite accurate, lower half. It that a problem? If yes, what can I do to correct it? Or is it a setting issue? Thank a lot!
The ae 30 pro is not available anymore since a couple of months in Belgium, Germany or the Netherlands. What is the problem ? In the mean time I still have my Ae 10 which I bought when Alistair was giving a demo in Lummen, Belgium.
@@isax.academy Thanks Alistair, Indeed we met. It was your demo that convinced me to buy the AE 10 on the spot. I hope to get the AE 30 soon. Regards, Robert
Question...How do I utilize the the palm keys on the Areophone. Known on the Sax as High D, D#, and F? Any assistance is Greatly Appreciated. Thank you!
Honestly...practice. They are not put in the best location and are too close to the body of the aerophone for me. Have to adjust to using them if I do at all. I usually use the fork F and E and for the Aerophone, I've been just playing the D & D# on the front of the horn and playing it up an octave. Set your Octave on the AR-30 to the +3 setting if you feel you need to go higher. :)
Can the the thumb pad be reassigned to do something other then growl? I would rather have it do Rotary or Note Hold. I cannot find out how to reassign the thumb function to do something else.
Just got mine yesterday. I'm enjoying it so far. I plugged in my headphones to silent practice but many of the sounds are not heard clear, they sound like if you were in a big room or with too much echo. Does anyone know how to fix that?
@@isax.academy I got it fixed now, thanks for replying. Now, the issue is different. I have been playing well on mostly instruments but sometimes when playing fast, some keys get stuck as if the ae-30 does not recognize the keys and it just keeps playing the note and the key or keys I previously played. Does it make sense? Do not know if it is a factory problem or would be fixed with any setting on the ae-30. Thank you!!!
@@danielduque438 This does come up frequently. Every time I've looked into this with folks its been because they've been pressing keys inadvertently or sometimes due to a Bluetooth problem. Try turning Bluetooth Off on the Aerophone and see if that helps.
I bought one of these and am totally frustrated by the unworkable octave keys. You have to press so hard that your thumb hurts and even then the key may not work. Does anybody ever try to play these ae 20s before they leave the factory?😢
I’ve had this instrument over 6 months and have spent hours trying to set it up with out success whilst trying to follow your videos. The problem is pressing the menu and + keys do not respond as suggested in your videos. Shouldn’t Roland’s be setting them up in at least a playable state. With small adjustments left for the individuals player to make. Thanks for your efforts however on a very complex device. Is there a back up company who undertake this sort of work? Many thanks John Varney.
Hi Sir I always been difficult in AE05 to use lips control like your video on 07:53 ( Sax ), Weakening bite to lowers the pitch when several time after, and the pith doesn't back to normal until I leave mouthpeace and blow again. may I ask, is this AE05 problem or something else I don't understand? thank for your help.
Do you have it set to sax bite position? Are you sure you have the mouthpiece seated correctly? The AE-05 will not do pitchblende up like the Pro version but will do a very good lip down and vibrato.
Hi Allistar, just got my aero phone pro, I downloaded the driver for the Mac, plugged the aerophone into the Mac, it is not being recognized, do I need an external usb dr
Thank you for your reply. I've had this horn 4 days now and from day one the palm keys have not worked at all. I think I may have horn that's not working as it should. @@isax.academy
Did you try a factory reset? Are you set to the SAX fingering? Do the little finger keys work? Are you a saxophone player and know the correct fingerings to use?
@@isax.academy Yes, but after I saw the advantages of the Wind Controller, I have been using Yamaha WX5 for years as well. Im going to try and download firmware update and drivers.Thank you so much Alistair for your help. Your videos are awesome! I'm also going to join you iSax group! Thanks again. "Spring"
Greetings Alistair, I recently purchased the Aerophone 10 not knowing a 30 was on the way...Sam Ash said they would allow me to exchange it for the 30 if desired. Do you think I should dish out $600 more to get the 30 or is the 10 sufficient. I am a live looping musician mainly guitar, drum machines, and synthesizers, and this is my upgrade from a Clarke tin whistle I've been playing for 10+ years. Your advice would be appreciated, thanks!
I'm not sure this is something I can answer I'm afraid. It really depends on so many things. All I can say is the Pro is obviously aimed at a more advanced player. You will certainly notice a big step up and the future proofing with the sounds is very exciting and the control possibilities are vast, which might be something that fits with you. I guess it depends on if you need the extra money for other things.
@@isax.academy Thank you for your response...Yes, fortunately money is not the issue. On the 10, I liked to play a note and kind of smoothly "zing" up or down with my thumb on the 4 octave keys creating a cool sonic time warp sounding effect. Another review I saw suggested those octave keys are a little more dense so I was worried would not be able to carry that out on the 30...also it sounds like it has a slightly different sound overall...Lastly, can I play this instrument with right hand on top or should I do the traditional left hand on top?
Hello. I have a pb with the USB-C connection to a laptop: It says on the roland driver page "Your computer automatically downloads the Windows(R) 10 driver from the Internet when a product requiring the driver is connected to the computer". However, this is not the case. The computer detects that there is a USB device connected, but then nothing happens. I clicked on the "download file" button to get what I though would be the driver files, but it is only a set of readme files repeating similar information. What should I do? (I tried both Vendor and Generic mode, same behavior). Btw, is there a helpdesk?
Sorry I haven’t used Windows in about 20 years. I think you need to go to the Roland Aerophone support page and download the driver from there. Follow the instructions. I think you have to actually install the driver yourself. Perhaps someone else can help here who has PC knowledge?
@@isax.academy Thanks. If I can indeed access the driver files this should solve the pb (I found out that indeed the system recognize the device, but says there is no driver). On the roland page, what you can download is actually just a set of .htm files, but I see no driver here.
Do you really need a USB stick to do the firmware update? I thought the aerophone came with a cable that is to be used to connect it to the computer to download the updates directly, rather than needing to put them onto the USB, and then onto the instrument. Can anyone confirm this?
I just got an AE-30, and as usual the manual and instructions are incredibly poor. No explanations of anything other than basic. Fortunately Alistair Parnell has explained virtually all that one needs to know to get started. This means the big overall organization that makes clear what terms like Scene, User, Favorites, System etc. really are all about. I'm convinced that almost all manuals are written by people who have totally failed every test of knowing how to explain anything well. These winners are then hired to write the most frustrating, nearly useless user manuals possible. A pox on the all, and blessings on Prof Parnell who is the World's Greatest Wincontroller Explainer. A real Superhero! Thanks !
Hey Alistair...Help me out on this ONE THING and I promise you I won’t bother you again ol’ buddy ol’ pal, and I’ll always say only the very best thing about you and you musicianship. LOL - But I am totally lost! You know how the Akai 4000s & 5000 has a “Note hold” on the side button? Well, I desperately need that function on my Aerophone AE-30 and I cannot find any mention of a “Note Hold” or “Sustain” anywhere in the app, or the owners manual or in the Roland Scene Schematic pdf. I have heard you (and others) sustain notes and build chords using some kind of note hold or sustain. But I cannot figure out how to get my Aerophone AE 30 to do that. I saw the Drone, but that’s not it...is it? If possible, my objective you be to trigger a Sustain (or Note Holds) by my pressing the thumb pad, but I’ll take using the S1 button if I have to. Can you help a brother out?
Hey Jim, my fellow Wanne user. ;) Some of the patches (scenes) have either the S1 button or the thumb pressure button program to hold on certain scenes (patches). Unfortunately, it is not programmed to be system-wide like the EWI. I too miss that function. So, the "note hold" function has to be programmed for the scene you want to use it on. I'm hoping it can be made system-wide. I also want to be able to program a key to not only do a "note hold" but to be able to add notes to that hold as I move/ add notes to the chord and the have the chord stop as I tongue ..... and then start a new "note hold" and add notes to create a different chord like on the EWI. In essence, I can finger and constantly start, create chords, stop the chord and create a new chord all by simply using my tongue. I know I didn't give a how-to but did want to let you know that it is not a missing function but it can be programmed to be used on any given button on the Ae-30. I am actually looking at using the highF# key for this since that key does nothing more than what the side F# key. So, looking and waiting for the same revelation you are. BTW: love your sax playing.
@@pneumasax YES!!!! That is exactly what I need it to do! I don’t even know where to begin. I looked all over on the Assign in the app and on the AE30. And I can’t find any mention of it. I san’t even find the word “Sustain” or “Note Hold” anywhere. It really is an important feature to me and the leads and solos I build in my shows. Give me a call...maybe we can figure it out. Hi Allistar, just got my pro aerophone today, I’m having a bit of a problem, I downloaded the driver for the Mac, and it’s not recognizing the aerophone, and do I need a usb stick to install the update on the instrument?
Yep. The update is done by USB stick. If you’re talking about the sending audio to the Mac via usb then you need to go to the menu and go to USB driver. Make sure it’s set to vendor. Turn it off and on again and it should now connect if the driver installed correctly.
Apologies to Alistair for this post but is anyone else as disappointed with their new AE30 as I am? I have little interest in the Zen Core/synth tones as I am very much orchestral orientated. I wanted to upgrade from the AE10 to get more tones such as Viola, Harp, Celeste, plus more, and was really looking forward to it after all the pre-launch hype. However, I have now had my AE30 a week and find it incredibly complex; some new key positions get more in the way, e.g. Eb key for left forefinger when trying to play a D, plus the ‘old’ AE10 tones for, say, violin, cello, shakuhachi have, Imho, gone backwards not forwards. It is also very anti-intuitive, e.g. if I wish to go down a scene list I have to press the up arrow, and to go up the list press the down arrow?? I have downloaded the Pro app but have found it less than useful compared to the old AE10 app wherein I could alter many parameters to enhance a tone simply, and easily, which I am finding impossible to do with the AE30. I would appreciate any comments-advice before I consider sending it back for a refund.
Hi there. Please don't apologies. I agree the Pro does take a bit more getting used to. There are a vast amount of options onboard and on the app and perhaps its a bit over kill for some people. The palm key thing you mention has not been an issue for me at all and I've not heard anyone else say about that and I don't quite understand about the scene list. Perhaps you're seeing it as going down a printed list on a page? I see it as the up arrow goes up in the numbers starting from 1 and up. So not like reading down a page. This is the way the AE-10 worked but the arrows went right or left. So on the Pro the up arrow is the same as right on the AE-10. The app has a huge amount more to offer than the AE-10 app but in doing that it is more complex I agree. As for the tones I actually think that many of those Super Natural sounds are actually identical to the AE-10. Some have been improved but non have taken a step back. As with any instrument it takes time to really get the best from it. I will be doing more videos to help with exploring the possibilities and don't forget there will be many upgrades to come with firmware updates. There will be huge potential for adding and sharing sounds in the near future. Having said that this instrument is aimed at the more advanced player and won't suit everyone. The Ae-10 is still very popular with many players.
@@isax.academy Hi Alistair, I was not expecting a reply from yourself, I was just trying to ascertain a few comments from us lesser players, but thanks for your thoughts; much appreciated. I completely accept your comment about the Pro not being for everyone (clue is in the name!) but I upgraded as, whilst I had no use for the Zen core sythn tones at all, I longed for more orchestral tones such as piano (you and I discussed this a couple of years ago! You will know me as the 'silver top' with the hard aero case you once described as 'bullet proof'!), celeste, harp, viola and others. If we were not in this covid situation I would have been over to see you but that was not possible. The scene list - I'll stick with my thoughts that if one reads down a page one would press a down arrow, but, that may be being a bit pedantic! As for whether the Sup.Nat tones have progressed, or, regressed, and whilst I do not have your 'ear' it is surely a matter of opinion. However, taking the 'minor' issues aside my biggest 'problem' (for want of a better word) is the sheer complexity. Once again I understand it is aimed at pros like you, AnYi Papa, and the other DWI gurus around the world, but for every one of your ilk who will master this with not too much difficulty, (and have the technical ability not to hit the Eb key!) there must be hundreds like me who will simply give up and return it. Sadly, I have; and I have bought another AE10 - it is disappointing as I can now not have my extra tones I dreamt of and Roland have lost out on the sale of a more expensive instrument. Anyway, I appreciate your time in replying, thank you and, if this lockdown ever ends, I look forward to seeing you again one day! best wishes, mike
Great video very informative.I too have the small hands problem. I can cope on the finger notes but the octave key arrangement is a real problem as my thumb picks up the other octave keys when crossing up the octave. .I gather the octave keys are raised on the 30 but I haven’t been able to find any where I can check one out. I purchase the 10 last October and was told there was a new model coming out shortly. Due to the lock down I couldn’t return the 10 within the four week return policy although I had been told they would take it back if I purchased the 30. In the event because I was two weeks over the time period. They wouldn’t even take it back at an exchange price so I am stuck with it. So much for their first class after service claim. Many thanks for your videos. John Varney
@@johnvarney5743 Hi John, I am pretty sure your query was aimed at Alistair but it has come through on my thread so I'll give you my thoughts for what they may be worth to you. I had a 10 for over 3yrs, then got a 30, and have gone back to a 10. Yes, I agree that the octave keys on the 10 are, for me, too sensitive/close and you can easily touch the wrong one by mistake but you do get used to them. The octave keys on the 30 ARE raised which, as a clarinet player, is a major improvement although there have been questions about their placement!! (too far apart and too far around, but, I would imagine again, that you'll get used to them) If you go to Alistair's Pro AE30 A closer look video @6.34 (after the midi port view) he shows an excellent view of the octave keys. Regarding your 'exchange' who are you railing against - Roland or the retailer? Even if in lockdown why could you not have returned your 10 by mail? A very odd situation that, but, if in 'as new' condition with box, etc., I am sure you'll get a good price on ebay if you really want to upgrade to the 30!
If you have a look in the manual page 5 where it says number 14 it will tell you to press and hold the Scene up button whilst turning the category knob. To select your favourites. You can of course select them directly using the app if you like or there are multiple other ways. Hope that helps.
Hello Alistair, mine is due tomorrow. I've been playing the WX5 as my go to horn for 12 yrs. now, and it Still sounds awesome, however, it seems Yamaha took forever to get it right with the making of the WX5. Then as soon as they did, they discontinued it! So I've been on Pins & Needles for the last few years searching. Hope it doesn't take as long to get everything under my fingers as the WX5 did. I'm already searching for tutorials, so pls keep me posted. Thanks so much, Spring
A brilliant explanation, but it scares the heck out of me with all the setting options. I think I stick to my Selmer. Aero phone must simplify the setting procedure and have some default settings, if it doesn’t already.
BATTERIES - According the Roland AE-30 Owners Manual, Page 3 & Page 6 says (repeatedly) that we are not to use AA Alkaline batteries in the AE-30. Roland wants us to use 6 Ni-MH (AA) rechargeables. No kidding. Additionally, the power cord only powers up the Aerophone from the wall plug. The Aerophone is not a battery charger. It does have the capability to recharge the Ni-MH batteries (like a Akai 5000). So figure in 6 Ni-MH batteries and a charger when you purchase this instrument. The good news is getting the proper batteries and a charger is not expensive. Probably $20.00 to $30.00 (US) and you are good to go.
I'm sure it said the same about the AE-10 and for several months I used regular AAs in it. I know it made the speaker crackle a bit but I had no problems. I got my charger back then and found it just saves so much money. I have two sets of batteries. One in the AE and the other in the charger.
Thanks!
Thank you so much Victor. this is much appreciated.
Hey! You’ve just made me a HAPPY MAN!! I just received my new Aerophone Pro! And been trying to figure it out... I’ll be honest! I’ve been WAITING ON YOU! You make things so much EASIER! Thank you Sir!😅
You are welcome and happy playing.
Just received my AE 30 and was overwhelmed with all the new settings to deal with. This video is a great start, thanks so much!
Glad it helped!
Help !
Thank you very much! It is very clear! I am new buyer of AE30 too. This is very helpful!
Very well put together explanation of a lot of things that could otherwise hang someone up. Thanks.
Many thanks Timothy.
Hi Alistair, I hope you are doing well with this pandemia, I got my AE-30 Pro two days ago, I haven’t have the time yet to explore it in deep, but thanks for putting out this video, made my life easier. I’m going to join the isax group in FB, thanks again for this great video... congrats
Thanks, you too!
Just ordered mine - my very first wind synth! Hoping that it will be here this weekend so that I can spend some time getting to grips with it. Thanks for this really helpful video Alistair.
Have fun!
Excellent help and introduction. Thanks so much!
Really appreciate this video on getting started with Aerophone pro, I just bought one and trying to figure out what is what!
Thanks for watching. 😊
Thank you so much- I just got one of these yesterday and your video saved me as I was starting up! Will definitely move on to watch the rest of your series…
Many thanks. I hope you enjoy your aerophone
Truly invaluable and without your guidance I would never have found the detailed answers to the questions I had about the AE-30... many thanks!
You're very welcome!
Many thanks Gunni.
Mine gets to me on Friday so I’m studying up, many thank youse
Thanks. G
5-pin MIDI Out on the Pro to MIDI In on the D50 should do the trick. Sadly I'm still eagerly waiting for mine.
Yes, I'd agree with Auld. Just remember you would need the voices in the D50 set up to work with breath control or such like to respond well.
My AE is arriving tomorrow! So pumped and ready to get to work. Your NEW name is now ALLstar Parnell!
Just got mine in the mail like two hours ago. Been playing for two hours straight by the way… The samples are WAY BETTER than you can tell from this video. This is so much fun!
Mine gets delivered tomorrow so excited. Thanks for making these videos keep them coming!
Enjoy!
Thank you for these bite sized explanations, very clear and informative.
Thanks
Hey Alistair, I was just checking yesterday to see if you'd posted anything. Eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Pro.
Have fun!
Thank you Alistair for posting this. You do such a great job explaining this stuff. I hope my new Aerophone AE-30 get delivered today. It was supposed to be here yesterday but I think FedEx might have lost it. I might be playing mine tonight if FedEx gets their act together.
Many thanks Jim. I hope it turns up. I'm waiting on a delivery from Canon which at this point is a month behind schedule. Rubbish Brexit!
My Aerophone Pro will be arriving today. Never played a Saxophone before but will learn from videos posted by Mr Alistair Parnell and others :)
Have fun!
@@isax.academy Thank you so much for the helpful videos👍 😘🙏
Do you still play it? How did you get on without playing sax before?
Just got my AE30 a couple days ago. The manual is not clear at all. The difference between the Favorite sound vs.User sound is not explained. Luckily, your tutorial video just came up in time. It is very helpful as always. Thanks.
Thanks for watching
UA-cam chapters are useful, thanks
You're welcome
Another brilliant tutorial well done Alistair I’m worried this might be a bit to technological for me I think I’ll need an electronics course 🤓Andy Hibbs
These things are pretty technical but you can get a long way just switching on and selecting sounds.
This was extremely helpful; thanks so much. Two questions: 1) Where can I find a list of the menu categories and their subparts? 2) Where can I find a list of your AE 30 videos? Thanks again.
It's seems very complicated! If I actually take the step and get it I'll have to watch this video over many times🤔You're a great teacher by the way!🤓
I'm sure you'll manage Derek
Great video thanks, can we have more of you playing it please?
Good info ,,tks
First, I want to thank so much for your teaching on electronic wind instruments you are a gifted musician and teacher. I am very excited about the Roland Pro. My question can you change the fingering as in the AE 10, I am a flute player. If it doesn’t would it be hard to change to sax fingering. Thank you Charles
Hi. I'm sure you'd find the fingering quite similar but I believe the pro has room for up to 36 of your own fingerings as well, so you could set your own combinations if you like.
@@isax.academy thank you I didn't realize it had that option
once again a great and very well done insight from you as a experienced pro. thx 🙏. and i am very happy to see that roland made a huge step forward with this windcontroller, for example the bite behaviour 😉 as a “WX senior” this could be very good choice for me. all the best!
Thanks again!
Right on time... I just ordered mine :)
Hope you enjoy it!
loving it
Thanks.
hello got mine and i am a first time player i noted that the instrument is an interesting one however its difficult to transission from one octave to the other which i know will come with time am always stuck at going to the low octave or hi octave
Excellent as usual. Thanks very much.
Thanks Dan.
Cheers
Thanks for answering this Paolo. You are absolutely right and I intend to cover this in my next video.
How to make Automatic vibrato at Pan-flute..? By the way, the functions of S1 and S2 switches are? Always my thanks!
Hi there. I think you could some advice from the Facebook group on this?

I am delighted to watch your video this morning and fortunately mý Aerophone 30 pro. which l have place order since last 2weeks came yesterday evening , l play saxophone in my Church pls can get me a home teacher for an hour coach 2times weekly Sir thanks.
Your videos are VERY helpful, thanks! What stand can you recommend for the aerophone pro? For my AE 10 I used the SAXRAX, but it does not fit anymore.....
I’ve not found the perfect stand yet. I’m hoping SaxRax will do one.
Many thanks. I haven't seen the perfect stand for the Pro yet. I guess its a wait and see but I'm sure something will be in the pipeline.
I haven't tried this myself yet but I don't see any reason at all why it won't work.
Hello Alistair! Thanks a lot for all yours lessons...
Sorry about my english, I' m writing from Spain...
I got the Roland AE20 from 1year ago...I' getting better with the instrument, and I just to play now a lot in live concerts with It (including flamenco stile..)
The only thing that I dont like much of this aerophone is the keyboard fingering of few notes, specialy the Eb key (I'm flutist..), cause if I leave press that key (like we do with the flute or sax..) during I goin up with a escale (B Mayor per example..) the notes of that scale will change, etc...
I'm thinking seriously to change from the AE20 to the AE30
Do you think that with the AE30PRO this kind of problems with the fingering could be get better??
Thanks a lot for your time!!
All the Best
Agustín Carrillo
No no no! Don’t do that.
Just change your fingering mode to SAX. Then you’ll be fine.
Thanks a lot for your response...
All the Best!!
A pc panel?
@@isax.academy yes, I'd like to control the AE30 with the PC.. I got Windows, not Apple.
Thank you for sharing, Alistair! Could you let us know what brand neck strap you are using?
I use a BG sling which is for alto. I prefer the narrow strap on Aerophone.
@@isax.academy Thank you!
Can you please make a video on the app. It's very different from the mobile app from the ae10.
Hi. Its next on my list.
Alistair-thanks for these AE-30 vids. My question is: if you make several setting changes, and then have to perform a factory reset due to a firmware update, doese that wipe out the changes one has made?
As far as I understand it it’s just like rebooting a phone. The User scenes and settings remain unchanged as far as I can see.
Thanks a lot! How do I add vibrato into the scene-Pan flute?
Are you talking about lip controlled vibrato or an automatic vibrato?
@@isax.academy automatic.
Do you have any recommendations for lubricating the keys
Never done it myself.
Excellent video my ae30 should be with me early next week looking forward to it
Just a question for you Allistor ,I also have Yamaha wx11,wx5 which I play in conjunction with the vl70m no problems,l also have a ewi5000 and a Roland xv5050 no problem when both of them are connned, the problem arises when I connect the ewi to the Vl70m the voices seem to get all mixed up ,you pick a trumpet voice and something different appears ,I have 2 vl70m,one has the Patchman chip in it ,and the other is as factory settings ,cannot remember which one I connected it to ,
Would you have any thoughts on this ,could it be the ewi or the vl70 m ?
Thanks again
This is difficult to understand without seeing what’s going on. Could you list a video perhaps?
Will go back and try the setup again and make it a bit more clear for you to understand
It sounds like something is sending out a program change message. Can you try to just plug the EWI directly into the Yamaha without anything else connected?
If you never have played. Is it fairly easy to learn? I play piano, bass, and guitar currently.
I'd say yes.
I am having issues with the key changing when i change instrument types. I have the Aerophone 20 set for Bb and it plays perfect when I use string settings but when I change to Flute or Accordion it goes out of tune ( almost a key change). Have you ever experienced this?
First question
Do you have transpose mode set to system or scene?
I have problem and question: it seems the 2nd key from bottom not quite accurate, lower half. It that a problem? If yes, what can I do to correct it? Or is it a setting issue? Thank a lot!
Is it possible to turn off individual valves in this tool? How to do it?
Yes. In the menu go to key function. Press the key you want to disable, press menu and select off.
@@isax.academy Yes!!!
The ae 30 pro is not available anymore since a couple of months in Belgium, Germany or the Netherlands. What is the problem ? In the mean time I still have my Ae 10 which

Hi. I guess we've met?
There seems to be a bit of a shortage, hopefully more shipments will be coming soon.

Does it have to plug it to external plug into an external amp or speakers
It can run on batteries and has its own internal speakers.
Yep. It can be set to do pretty much anything. Have a look in the Assign settings or easier on the app.
@@isax.academy Thank you so much Alistair. I will look for the video. I really need this to work.
Can you bluetooth that small screen to you ipad ,,screen ,,
There is the iPad app that allows you to make all the edits you’ll need and select sounds directly from the screen.
Just got mine yesterday. I'm enjoying it so far. I plugged in my headphones to silent practice but many of the sounds are not heard clear, they sound like if you were in a big room or with too much echo. Does anyone know how to fix that?
Sounds like it could be your headphones.
Are you sure you pushed the cable all the way into the Aerophone?
Have you tried a different pair.
Did you put a clarinet mouthpiece teeth guard?
It's a saxophone mouthpiece patch.
Great vid. Will join Facebook to get more details.
Awesome, thank you!
I bought one of these and am totally frustrated by the unworkable octave keys. You have to press so hard that your thumb hurts and even then the key may not work. Does anybody ever try to play these ae 20s before they leave the factory?😢
Perhaps you have a faulty unit?
The octave keys should be easy to press down.
Are you sure it’s not to do with your hand posture?
I’ve had this instrument over 6 months and have spent hours trying to set it up with out success whilst trying to follow your videos.
The problem is pressing the menu and + keys do not respond as suggested in your videos.
Shouldn’t Roland’s be setting them up in at least a playable state. With small adjustments left for the individuals player to make.
Thanks for your efforts however on a very complex device.
Is there a back up company who undertake this sort of work?
Many thanks John Varney.
Hi there. Can you tell me exactly what setting you are struggling with?
I think you got this sorted now?
Sorry, I should have been more specific... I was asking about the palm keys on the Areophone Pro AE-30. Thanks!
Hi. I’m not quite sure I understand the question. They play the same as the sax keys.

Another review I saw suggested those octave keys are a little more dense so I was worried would not be able to carry that out on the 30...also it sounds like it has a slightly different sound overall...Lastly, can I play this instrument with right hand on top or should I do the traditional left hand on top?
i play happily
Hi there. I can absolutely confirm that on the AE-20 and AE-30 this has to be done via a USB memory stick.
Hey Jim. I just did a video on this on my Facebook group iSax. It's certainly possible.
Using the menu is sorta madness. It's much easier to get it to switch sounds via a iPhone/iPad/Android.
I agree. My next video will be about using the app and all the possibilities.
I can cope on the finger notes but the octave key arrangement is a real problem as my thumb picks up the other octave keys
when crossing up the octave.
.I gather the octave keys are raised on the 30 but I haven’t been able to find any where I can check one out.
I purchase the 10 last October and was told there was a new model coming out shortly.
Due to the lock down I couldn’t return the 10 within the four week return policy although I had been told
they would take it back if I purchased the 30.
In the event because I was two weeks over the time period.
They wouldn’t even take it back at an exchange price so I am stuck with it.
So much for their first class after service claim.
Many thanks for your videos.

How Do I Recall Favorites On AE-30 !!!!!!!!! ??????????????
How Do I Recall Favorites On AE-30 !!!!!!!!! ??????????????
If you have a look in the manual page 5 where it says number 14 it will tell you to press and hold the Scene up button whilst turning the category knob. To select your favourites. You can of course select them directly using the app if you like or there are multiple other ways.
Hope that helps.
This is quite helpful. I got mine three days ago and playing for 2 hours everyday!
Hope it's going well.

@@isax.academy Do you recommend a certain rechargeable battery brand?

Hey. Thank you very much indeed.
A little appreciation goes a long way.
