The kind of paper and the pen that I use are the most important part of my art and ppl always ask me why. Thank you for this video, I can send this to them to make them understand more.
Thank you! Soo very helpful! I am a Grandma beginner artist!. I am learning a lot from viewing many of your videos. Perhaps soon, I will be able to buckle down and just take your art course. I simply did not know what I could do or learn. But I am having a blast along the way! Thank you for educating the total beginner with free videos. P.S. I keep coming back to your videos because you are easy to understand, and you tackle one area at a time. I have been able to try so many different things so I can determine just what it is I will want to work with.
I've been trying to find good paper for coloured pencils after realizing sketch paper is the worst format to use them on. This is incredibly helpful, thank you.
This information is so hard to find! Thank you for this! And your artwork is amazing. Especially the liquor drink with ice, I actually said, "whoa..." 😮
You’re a fantastic instructor, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked for something foundational and your video knocks it out of the ballpark. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!
Wow, dude! This answers questions I've had for years. I wish I'd had you as a teacher back in art school. Good job explaining! Thanks for posting. Keep up the good work.
This is a wonderful information video. I especially appreciate the little actual demo of the medium on the surface each time. This answers many questions I had, and also several I didn't even know enough to ask! You're a skilled and generous-hearted educator, which adds many times to your gifts as an artist.
This is by far THE MOST HELPFUL information and tutorial on surfaces. Thank you sir for those videos and you don't have idea how much this helps me and inspires me to deal with PTSD and ADHD. I cannot thank you enough. Nick /Detroit originally Bosnia. ❤️ 💙 💜
This video was so helpful! I was just wishing for a “cheat sheet” for good papers to use with different mediums. I know you said there are not hard rules but this is a great jumping off point for me and I already have most of these! Thanks so much!
I figured this out the hard way, which I'm sure is pretty normal. I picked up some cheap dollar store sketch paper to start with, and that was fine when it came to just starting out with basic pencil line drawing, but as I started to get more into layering and blending, especially with coloured pencils, it broke down like a cheap card table at Thanksgiving.
Lol...That's so true my friend! Same here but that's the adventure of art. I don't know who actually said this because I've heard several people tell me different artists who said it but some famous artist said " A person who isn't artistic can have the very best of materials and create nothing, while a true artist can have only the worst of materials and create a masterpiece."
Great job here - it looks like you really put some thought into this. It was really helpful to see some of the popular papers talked about in use and seeing actual pieces of art you've done on each.
I joined yesterday and am glad that I did. I have used plenty of your free videos(Thank you) and will continue to do so, but now I won't feel guilt! The material you present is excellent and easy to understand. Bravo! Thank you, too, for making your classes so affordable!
I am 51 and finally getting my art together. I'm just starting out, and learning to sketch. My goal eventually will be to be an artist in oil. My question to anyone here that honestly knows; What is the best type of, or brand is best for sketching? Thanks and I'm loving the courses!!!!
I recently started drawing and using various media again and I've been paying attention to different paper qualities and their characteristics. Thank you for this informative video!
Your tutorials are the best, best, best soft spoken and well understood, excellent, and mesmerizing listening to you, your voice is awesome, ,I learned a lot today from you ,,, thank you for your tutorial, number one on my list for tutorials, for now on,,,!!! I will watch all your tutorials, love it thank you for your tutorial Zoe very talented
Thank you. I just started drawing and am pleased with my results but I can see how other paper will help me further enhance my drawings. I use graphite pencils but have expanded into color pencils and soon some water color pencils.
Excellent tutorial about quality artist papers on the market and what paper to choose for your media choice for your next project. I found this very helpful. Thank you!
I'm actually just learning to make my own paper for art. This was informative in giving me the language to use to market my hand made paper if I decide to sell it.
You are forgetting to mention the colored pencils and as well as the graphite and charcoal are working well on the other side of Canson Mi-teinted mire specifically! Good review of paper using fir beginner only, because a lot of others informations weren’t 😊mentioned over here! Personally. I love pastelmat, legion Stonehenge (green pad), hot pressed watercolour pad of any brands for multimedia, but particularly for colored pencils and watercolor pencils and marker as well for my finished art projects! Hope these info would be helpful to someone who is looking for suitable surfaces and economic ones for multimedia using! 😊
Thank you so much! This was awesome! Gave me more clarity that I needed in addition to my current knowledge. Thank you for demoing the different mediums on all those papers! Greatly appreciated.
Dyno-mite video, hadn’t really spent much time considering the drawing paper that I’ve been using. Glad to learn about Bristol paper as I have a couple of pads in my inventory. Thanks 🙏
This was a big help. I just started with colored pencils and was using cheap paper. I have learned a lot about paper here and will be experimenting. Thanks!
Excellent! Thank you. I have many of these papers but now will use them with different choices of mediums. I will experiment a little more without fear.😊
Best paper for Fountain pens by far, is the Canson drawing 180gr. Fineliners and Fountain pen artists, that haven't used it yet, would really be blown away! It's really unbelievable, how those mediums, look and perform, on that paper!! For Polychromos, I like the Heavyweight Daler Rowney (both the Smooth and the Fine Grain). Fabriano Artistico is also another favorite, for any kind of medium. especially Polychromos, then my favorite graphite pencils (Faber Castell 9000 and their TK 9500/ TK 4600, which use the best quality graphite out there!). Honorable mention, Stonehenge Legion Hotpress.
Thank you for this video series! Arches is our favorite for watercolor paper but would also like to dabble a little bit with Canson, Fabriano and Ampersand. Do you have a video review of Fabriano and Ampersand by any chance?
Best paper video I've watched. So many are people just telling people what they love and not really showing the close ups so people can figure out what is best for them.
Hi Christine, I have several lessons on this. Is there a video you can share on chemical fixative for graphite and charcoal drawings without yellowing the paper overtime? Would the fixative could also be used in chalk pastels? Thank you.
Thank you, I knew some of this but not as much as I thought. I’ve only just discovered Yupo paper. Thank you so much for a well presented video. I LOVE your tree. As I watched the video I realised how diverse and wonderful your sketches are, you have a lot of talent. It must be wonderful to draw so well!
Thank you so much Matt, very informative! I’ve never heard of Canson Hot presses paper, I’m definitely going to try this out! I just started watching ur videos, ur art is amazing! Any suggestions on what videos I should start with as a beginner? I did a lot of acrylic painting years ago, but always wanted to learn how to do pen and ink and pencils, both regular and watercolor. Thank you so much!! Liz😊👍🏼💗
I like to buy very small pads of paper in a wide range of types. A bit expensive at the start, but I can use all my media on the samples and work out my favourites before a heavy outlay on larger sheets
Literally I thought I had done my research on paper when I started out a yr ago but have had so much info to absorb I didnt really pay that much attention...know I'm learning that .....lol I needed this video a yr ago...lol but it's ok I can still use all my pads I bought so I could practice on different types of paper cause I was a beginner I didnt know what I loved as I loved all type of drawing and painting .......so I bought different pads except pastel pad I'd didnt even know they had that.....thanks fir video I'll probably be referring to this a bunch of times...

@@alexmacdonald3589 That's very true! Unfortunately, I'm not at the stage where the dollar store will allow me to produce Starry Night lol.
The dollar store stuff are good for thumbnails I learned if your style is creating that first before using the artist grades ones for the final work!
@@avivxtodah That sounds like an idea if you are on a tight budget.

Thank you. I just started drawing and am pleased with my results but I can see how other paper will help me further enhance my drawings. I use graphite pencils but have expanded into color pencils and soon some water color pencils.
This channel is the best 👍🏼

This has to be the best on non watercolour paper. Great painting as well, loved the elephant and horse! Thanks
Thank you Matt. I learnt a lot. My favorite of these makes is Strathmore 400 series Watercolour, 300gsm.

Your channel is awesome! Thank you for creating it.
I really like the way you pronounce “drawing”. Droawing or if you’re cutting to the chase, just Drohing.

I think what's lacking in a lot of paper review comparison videos I've seen is sound. I'd like to know what the paper sounds like to draw on.
This needs more views.
